A hospital director in the Chinese metropolis of Wuhan, the epicentre of a new coronavirus outbreak, died from the disease on Monday, state media reported on Tuesday. Liu Zhiming, Director of Wuchang Hospital, died from infection of the new coronavirus, which has so far spread to more than 72,000 people across China, the state-owned newswire China News Service said on microblogging site Weibo. His death comes as more medical personnel on the front lines of China’s battle against Covid-19 are falling ill with the disease. China reported last week that more than 1,700 medical workers have been infected, and at least six have died. A total of 72,436 infections and 1,868 deaths have so far been reported across the country, the National Health Commission said on Tuesday. In the previous 24 hours, medical authorities counted 1,886 new cases and 98 deaths. Both the number of new infections and deaths dropped slightly from the past few days. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday the number of new coronavirus infections in China appeared to be declining, though it was too early to tell if the reported decline would continue. China’s renowned epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan said he expected the outbreak to peak by middle-to-late February, later than initially estimated, according to Southern Metropolis Daily. Zhong said he expected the situation to be “stable” by the end of April. Cities continued to tighten their restrictions meant to curb the spread of the virus. Beijing on Monday cordoned off its hutongs, traditional alleyways in the centre of the city, with community members restricting non-residents’ access. The Beijing International Automobile Exhibition, which was supposed to take place from April 21 to 30, has been postponed due to the outbreak, the organisers said in a statement. (dpa/NAN) |

More Houses of Assembly in the Southwest on Wednesday got the drafts of the Bill on Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Operation Amotekun. The drafts were transmitted by the executive arms in Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti states for legistive works and passage. The Osun State government, on Tuesday, sent the e-version of the bill to Speaker Sunday Owoeye, who promised that the memo would be given expedition consideration. The Ondo State Executive Council approved the bill of the State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps at its meeting yesterday. It was learnt that the Council, in an exhaustive session, considered every detail of the Bill that was presented by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kola Olawoye (SAN.) The bill has six parts and 44 sections. “It is also gratifying to disclose that every apprehension or fears expressed have been adequately looked into,” Olawoye said. According the bill, royal fathers will have roles to play in the operations of the security outfit pursuant to its passage into law by the State Assembly. Adeniran assured the people that the state’s Amotekun Corp would be headed by a state commandant, adding that the bill also allows for collaborative efforts among the six Southwest states, should the need arise. He expressed optimism that the bill will get speedy attention from the lawmakers so that the governor can also give the required assent in no long time. Adeniran said: “We presented the bill for the creation of the Ogun State Security Network Agency or what many call the Amotekun Corp Bill of 2020. “Today, the Executive Council of Ogun State met and adopted a draft, as amended, of a bill for a law to establish the Ogun State Security Network Agency. This agency will comprise the Amotekun Corp and this bill will be transmitted to the House of Assembly before the end of this week.” In Ibadan, the Oyo State House of Assembly promised to give accelerated passage to the bill on the State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun. House Committee on Information Chairman Kazeem Olayanju told The Nation yesterday that the bill will today go through the first and second readings, in line with earlier pledge to give it accelerated passage. The bill had earlier been transmitted to the Assembly by the Executive. The Ministry of Justice put finishing touches to the bill after a regional framework was adopted by the Attorneys-General of the six Southwest states last Friday. The states are: Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos and Ekiti. The AGs met in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to adopt the proposal of the three-man committee set up earlier for the task. Speaker of the Ekiti House of Assembly Funminiyi Afuye said the bill seeking for the creation of Ekiti State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps will be passed today. The executive arm ratified the bill yesterday and transmitted the draft to the House of Assembly. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Yinka Oyebode said the bill for the creation of Amotekun Corps was given approval after extensive deliberation by the EXCO. Oyebode said in a statement: “This evening, the Executive Council of Ekiti State met and carefully considered the bill for the creation of Ekiti State Security Network Agency after extensive deliberation. “The Council adopted the security outfit sequel to the earlier approval by the Attorneys-General and Commissioners of Justice of the six Southwest states. “So, the bill will be transmitted early tomorrow (Thursday) to the House of Assembly to give legal backing to the Ekiti State Security Network Agency otherwise called Amotekun Corps.” Speaking in a telephone chat with our reporter, Afuye who said though it has not official received the bill but the house will receive, deliberate and pass the bill on Thursday (today) for onward transmission for governor’s assent. He noted that the Ekiti State Security Network bill when enacted, would stem the tide of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and other manifestation of criminalities that have continued to constitute hindrances to people’s normal social and economic life. The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, last July, came up with the idea of a regional security network, codenamed: Amotekun. It was inaugurated on January 9 in Ibadan. But the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN) declared it illegal, saying the constitution makes no room for a regional security organisation. The development forced the states to seek legal backing through legislation by their Houses of Assembly. The six governors plan to simultaneously sign of the bills into law tomorrow. |

Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire, on Wednesday in Kano confirmed that two suspected cases of Coronavirus has so far tested negative after diagnosis in the Ehanire, disclosed this, while declaring the two day, Kano State Primary Health Summit open at Government House, affirmed that the country was fortified with three well-equipped centres to diagnose the deadly disease and other viral infections.while an emergency ambulance will soon be launched in Abuja. He explained that the Federal Government has already provided adequate mechanisms at all entry points in the country to screen all incoming passengers to ascertain their health status in order to prevent possible carriers from gaining entrance in the country.. Also, at the occassion, the minister said the Federal Government has awarded Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje Nigeria’s champion of primary healthcare delivery. Ganduje is the second person receiving award of such nomanclature 27 years after. Dr. Enahire said the award was bestowed on Ganduje for his continued effort in the development of primary healthcare system in the state, in line with global best practice. He expressed delight over Ganduje’s sterling performance in the health sector, pointing out that the rate at which Kano is moving in the development of the primary health care system is encouraging and superb. Dr. Enahire revealed that, “we at the Ministry, we are united in arriving at the decision that led to the Award of this merit to His Excellency Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. “All the indices used before they arrived at this level, were scientifically proven, that they all appreciated the immense contributions of the Governor in the area mentioned, primary health care delivery system. He further stated that because of his unassuming belief and acceptance of the efforts being put by the Governor in the health sector generally, “this is my third time of coming to Kano in less than a Month. This signifies that, Kano is doing well in the sector because I cannot just be coming without being satisfied that the Governor is doing very well.” Dr. Enahire noted that, Kano state under Ganduje, “understands the importance of the health sector and not at the detriment of other sectors of the state, because we have been following trends and see for ourselves. Dr Ganduje is that Governor who believes in healthy society. And who works towards improving same.” Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shu’aib disclosed that, “the last time such award was given, was for the last 27 years. Here we are awarding Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje with it, Champion of Primary Health Care. “We looked at the quality leadership that gave birth to effective and efficient primary health care delivery system, with good budgetary provision to the sub-sector and good management, before we arrived at the winner of the award.” He added that the incredible leadership demonstrated by Ganduje, in his untiring effort in developing primary health care in the state, which culminated into making other state to copy from Kano, was another reason why the Governor exhibited multi-faceted feats being achieved in the healthcare sector. He particularly commended Ganduje for his resolve to stamp out polio in the state, adding that, “since when the Governor was a Deputy Governor, Kano state and the nation in general, would not forget your efforts towards polio eradication. “While His Excellency the Governor came up with the idea of Health Care Influencers, as another strategy to strengthen primary health care delivery system, it is on record that, other states see wisdom in the style. It is known to all that, the Governor is doing extremely amazing things in this sector.” According to him, the women participation as Influencers is another way of helping the primary health care sector become more entrenched and with more grassroot support, where sense of ownership would be achieved. He also disclosed that the Federal Government has released over N9.8b to support and end polio virus in the country. In his remarks, Ganduje said, “this Summit heralds a milestone in the health sector, particularly primary health care delivery in the state. We all believe that the welfare of our people from the grassroot is another cornerstone.” He added that Ganduje is pumping enough resources towards achieving effective and efficient primary health care delivery system in the state. Ganduje, however, conducted Dr. Enahire and his entourage to the State Cancer Centre, which is under construction, which the Vice President Prof, Yemi Osinbajo laid its foundation few weeks back. Also over 500 women were taken to Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital for free Cancer screening, as part of activities to mark the year 2020 World Cancer Day. |

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole on Tuesday explained why Senate President Ahmed Lawan was not inaugurated as Chairman of the National Reconciliation Committee. He said the Senate President stepped down to attend to pressing state matters. Speaking at the inauguration of the reconstituted committee, headed by the party’s pioneer National Interim Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, the APC chair said the inauguration was delayed because Lawan declined the appointment. According to him, the reconciliation committee was conceived by the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) to reconcile aggrieved members so that the party can enjoy internal cohesion between now and the next election. He said: “After due consultation, the President approved the committee. However, the process has suffered a little delay because the person originally slated to head the committee was unable to play that role and so, we had to revisit the entire composition.” He said the acceptance of the members to serve in the committee renewed the confidence of the leadership that members of the party are desirous of ensuring that there is peace and tranquility in the party. Oshiomhole said: “It is traditional for progressive parties to have internal contestations, argument and disagreement. There is nothing wrong with those. “If you have a party where there are no disagreement, there must be something wrong. “ |

The Minister of Health, Prof. Osagie Ehanire, says Lagos State, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is well prepared and ready to contain the novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infectious disease, if eventually it breaks out in Nigeria. Ehanire gave this assurance on Sunday, while briefing newsmen after inspecting facilities at the Emergency Response Readiness designated for the Coronavirus victims at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba in Lagos. “I can say that Lagos State is well prepared; there is high level of readiness here, and also the awareness is there,” he said. Enahire, therefore, commended the state government for its level of preparedness against the outbreak of any infectious disease in the state. While expressing satisfaction at the infrastructure put in place, he said that the state, considering its vulnerability to infectious disease, had learnt lessons from the Ebola episode of 2014, and reflected the experience in its level of preparedness. “It is quite clear that Lagos has a clear-cut edge in managing infectious diseases and preparedness. “I am extremely happy that Lagos is equipped in the area of knowledge built from the foundation it obtained from the 2014 Ebola outbreak which the state managed properly,” Ehanire said. The minister, who also inspected the state Bio-bank located inside the Mainland Hospital, lauded the state government for deploying additional 30 health personnel to assist with surveillance at the ports entry. “I am impressed that the state has taken science to a very modern and admirable level. This is obviously a place where lot of lessons will be learnt,” he said. The minister said that the Federal Government would continue to collaborate with the state on knowledge sharing and support team. Earlier, Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, said that the state had been working assiduously to prevent an import of CoronaVirus into the state. Abayomi said that the state government was ramping up its preparedness for containment should there be an outbreak. “Since the experience we had with Ebola few years ago, we have been building capacity, infrastructure, revising our policies and laws, training staff that are specially equipped to deal with outbreak of infectious diseases like Ebola, Monkey pox, Lassa Fever and Coronavirus if it comes here. “So, we are ready in Lagos; we have the facility, trained staff, and robust surveillance system in place to contain and effectively manage an outbreak,” Abayomi said. The commissioner said that the state was supporting the Federal Government with staffs at the airport to ensure effective surveillance and screening of travelers. Responding to rumours of a suspected case of coronavirus in Alimosho Local Government Area, Abayomi dismissed the news as fake, noting that Lagos has no suspected or confirmed case of coronavirus. “We heard the same rumour and we deployed our biosecurity team there yesterday. “They have gathered a lot of medical and community intelligence, and so far, it appears to us that there is no such thing and that this was fake news. “I want to use this opportunity to appeal to Lagosians and Nigerians that when you spread false rumours, it is actually very damaging. “Though, it is testing our capacity to respond, but is also very expensive and can cause panic in the community apart from the stigmatisation it causes,” the commissioner said. Abayomi noted that novel Coronavirus was not a racial illness, adding that the disease can affect anybody, while warning that perpetrators of fake news would be punished when caught. (NAN) |

The Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China to Nigeria, Mr. Zhou Pingjian, has said his country had not found a solution to the Coronavirus epidemic. He said there was no basis for panic because the fatality rate had remained much less than a “normal” epidemic. The ambassador said another 1,500-bed hospital will open today in Wuhan, where the epidemic’s first case was recorded. But latest statistics revealed that about 839 fatalities had been recorded and over 632 patients cured. Pingjian, who addressed reporters on Tuesday in Abuja, said China was “looking into a two-week window to curtail the virus”. He added: “No solution has been found to Coronavirus yet. For the 632 patients that have been cured, we did that by boosting their immunity. For the confirmed cases of those who are under 50 years, there was no death. Most of those affected are the aged people. “The scientists tentatively tend to identify the cause from bats and maybe some humans, but not 100 per cent sure. There is a lot of conspiracy theory about Coronavirus, but we don’t have proof. “We have already built 1,000-bed capacity but by Wednesday (today), another 1,500-bed hospital will come on stream to deal with the epidemic. “We have taken every possible means to curb it. This epidemic is preventable, curable and controllable. There is no basis for panic. The fatality rate is below three per cent.” On the effects of the epidemic on China’s economy, Pingjian said: “In the short term, it is going to affect the economy. But according to experience, the fundamentals of China’s economy cannot be changed by this epidemic. I think the economy will pick up after Coronavirus has been curtailed.” |
