Education / The Boy Who Didn't Want To Graduate (short Story) by CrazyScientist: 10:42am On Nov 19, 2016
Our school was an only boys community boarding school down in the east. Our students were widely known, not for their academic prowess, but for their mischief and misdemenours.

Students would be seen loitering during class hours plucking udala or cashews. The senior boys would occasionally steal yams, fowls or goats from the teachers quarters and prepare a meal of yam porridge and roasted meat. At this time I was in form 1. We the junior boys were tasked with sneaking in spices and other essentials for a taste of this 'privileged feast'.

The most popular amongst our seniors was David Alen or 'baddo' as he was popularly called, he was the oldest in the school and was a nuisance to teachers. He broke every law, possible or impossible.

He would relax in the hostel during class hours, as he had turned his dormitory into a bachelors pad. He had every illegal thing not allowed in school, like pots, a stove and even a radio. He once printed obituary posters of our principal (who was still alive) and pasted them around the school. Yet, he was never expelled as he was feared by all.

Graduation day came and every one was happy teachers and students alike, students, cause we would finally get a taste of good food, especially the reverred meal, Jollof Rice,Teachers, cause Baddo was graduating. Except for one person, Baddo. He didn't want to graduate!

He promised he was not going to leave the school, he couldn't fathom leaving a place he was 'president' of. His friends and teachers begged, his mom also came begging in tears, but all pleas fell on deaf ears, he swore he was going to live his entire life in the school , even get married there!

And stay he did!

Baddo had spent two years in the school, I was in form 3 when we heard the news that, Baddo had finally decided to leave! He was bored of the school as expected, his friends were no longer around to follow him on his escapades as his new friends weren't as daring.

Jubilation rented the air.

School was closed at 12pm that day, quite early for a Thursday. The junior boys were sent to help him pack his belongings, the Band Boys got their drums and played wonderful music while baddo wearing a gucci boxer and cover shoes danced holding a bucket where passerby's made donations to 'his cause'. The whole school formed a procession behind him singing and dancing.

A junior student had been sent ahead earlier to inform his mother of his arrival. On getting to his house, his mom ran out and hugged him, dancing to our music. The whole school was later treated to a meal of Jollof Rice. A Special thanksgiving service was held in the school on Sunday. It was indeed a miracle.

Gaming / Rise Of A Legend: A Football Manager Story by CrazyScientist: 6:39pm On Oct 30, 2016
Any FM fan would know FM17 is about to hit the market, I decided to run this FM16 Rise To The Top Career story to usher us into the new "Era". Hope you enjoy!
It is about the rise of A manager with no Coaching Qualification and little football history.
**********

Football had always been my dream, my life, my passion, I had always wanted to be a professional football player, at age 13 I had registered with the Pepsi football academy, I was juggling football and school, I was given special leave from school when we had a competition, though I still kept up with my studies. I was what you'd call a Sunday league player...
At 17, it happened, I obtained a scholarship to play for FC Porto, but no, it was not to be, my dad didn't want a footballer as a son, I followed my father's dream and studied business management in a prestigious Nigerian university. I graduated and went for my masters abroad in Spain. I returned and resumed work as M.D. in the family business. That was a long time ago, now I'm 27 with a flourishing career but no passion for the job.

A Cool November Night...

I was at a popular bar with my friends on the Lagos Island, we met and discussed politics and football on the weekends, I was analyzing a Chelsea match on who should have played and done what to the amazement of the crowd. "O boy! You go fit be manager o! " a voice shouted from the crowd, I laughed. I loved football and was good in analyzing matches, but manager? Im not sure about that I thought to myself.m we continued our discussion and a white man walked up to me.

"Hello? Are you a footballer or do you have any history in football management?"

"No..." I replied wondering who this was.

"Pardon my manners, I'm Miguel Angel Arto, the chairman of C.F Fuenlabrada, I'm here to close up a business deal for an hotel"

"Cool, nice to meet you" I said shaking his hand.

Reaching into his suit pocket, he gave me his card.

"Call me if you ever think about management, but make it quick"

Was this a dream, I watched the man walk away, as my friends told me "old boy, see opportunity.
I had a job that paid well, and besides I had given up on a career in football, I didn't even have coaching qualifications.

******The previous week had been one hell of a week, the more I thought about what happened at the bar, the more my passion for football fueled, I called Mr. Miguel, he was already in Spain, but offered an all expense paid trip to meet him.

"Hello dad, I quit..."

********

He had interviewed me via Skype and was impressed with my philosophies, I was headed to Spain to sign the contract and finalize the agreement, I researched about C.F. Fuenlabrada on the plane, it was a small club in Madrid in the town of fuenlabrada. They were playing in the Spanish 3rd division group 4.
This would be one he'll of a challenge I thought. I arrived Spain and was taken with a taxi who had Been waiting for me at the airport straight to the club, it was a small stadium one of about 2500seats, it reminded me of the kind of stadiums division 2 NPFL teams had back home in nigeria.

I met with Mr. Miguel and we got straight down to business.

"This is a struggling club, so this is a trial 1year contract, you'd be on £650 per week. With a wage budget of £24,000 and transfer budget of £0 as our former manager squandered £600,000"

What ?! December was almost here leaving me with a 7months contract in reality. I had 7months to help a team in 17th place avoid relegation.. alright. I put pen to paper and it was done.

I headed straight to the training ground and Miguel introduced me to the players, I could see the players were just training for training sake. I gathered them together and said.

"I know we have been in a bit of a blip recently, but if we come together and work hard I believe we would overcome."

Cheers and shouts rented the air, the players were excited and got back to training with vigour, I could see a few good ones like Matas, Borja Diaz and Jorge Ortiz and a Borja who I later found out is on loan from Real Madrid. I asked for an overall assessment of the team from the assistant manager including video tapes. Our first match was going to be on 6th December, so there was no time to waste time.

"Let's head to the press conference Mr. Daniel."

*******
Pics later. Thanks for reading, follow!

Education / Why We Cant Remember Our Birth -nerdvarsity(+pics) by CrazyScientist: 9:14pm On Jun 29, 2016
We all can remember most things in our life, like our graduation, first job, first kiss, or that time I tried to do a backflip on concrete (Long Story…), But it doesn’t take a scientist to know that most of us cant remember much that happened in our lives from birth to around age 3. So, why cant we remember being born (our birth experience)… follow me on another epic journey.

Where were you last Sunday? You’d probably remember where you were and what you were doing, even if you don’t get all the details right. Scientists call these memories “EPISODAL MEMORIES” ,so why don’t people have episodal memories from their birth, the inability of humans to recall events of the birth is called “Infantile Amnesia”, scientists have come up with a lot of hypothesis to explain this.

Some say the events of child birth are traumatic and sexually graphic so the brain doesn’t store them, others say the brain of a baby is not yet developed to store memories until the baby has basic grasp of language, but this has been refuted as infantile amnesia is also present in mice and they have no basic grasp of language. So this crossover of infantile amnesia among species has disproved the hypothesis of language, this has led scientists to believe that, it’s not that we don’t have early memories, but it reaches a certain stage where we can’t access them.

Scientists and Researchers asked children aged 3 to describe recent events, like a visit to a park, they were able to describe it accurately, the scientists, followed up and at ages 5,6,7, the children could only recall 60% of that event. At ages 8 and 9, the children could only recall 40%. This shows Infantile Amnesia as it progresses.

Another theory scientists have is “NEURO GENESIS” in the “HIPPOCAMPUS ”, the hippocampus is a crucial part of the brain for storing memories, in Alzheimer’s disease, the hippocampus is one of the first place’s to be affected which leads to memory loss. So scientists believe that as rapid NEURO GENESIS (creation of new cells) takes place in the hippocampus in children, with the brain creating new cells you’d use to store memories for the rest of your life as a child, old memories are wiped away.

Science/Technology / What If The Earth Had Two Moons -nerdvarsity (+PICS) by CrazyScientist: 8:45pm On Jun 28, 2016
Our moon is quite a major factor for how our life is on earth, the ocean tides, visibility of the night, our seasons and more. Planets in our solar system like mars and Jupiter have more than a moon, what if the earth had two moons, let’s see how would life be different on earth…

Physicist and Astronomer, Neil F. Comins delved into this thoughty idea and his theories on what would happen to the earth are quite interesting.

First, lets talk about how our moon was formed, scientists say our moon was formed when a ‘Mars-Sized’ object rammed into our earth and debris from the impact was hurled into space and started orbiting the earth until it eventually became the moon we know today. This isn’t something we’d want to see happen a second time though.

Neil F. Comins takes a disastrous path in his book about how the second moon (which he called LUNA) would be formed. While Luna settles down, the gravitational pull of the new moon would create tides 8times greater than the one we have now, which would make living close to sea shores harder, sea travel would be harder too. There would be numerous volcanic eruptions and tsunamis which would ultimately lead to the extinction of aquatic life.

Once the new moon settled, we would have brighter nights due to two full moons, there would be shorter dark nights, nocturnal animals would have to evolve and get smarter as their prey would develop new camouflage abilities to hide from them. Humans would have to develop new ways to live ashore as buildings close to the shore would be destroyed by the high tides. Eventually, the two moons would collide and we would have one moon again, and the resulting debris would rain down on earth causing another mass extinction and new life on earth would start again.

Though his book is just an hypothesis, Scientist say earth usually has more than one moon when small asteroids (about a metre in diameter) orbit the earth for some weeks and eventually go their way again without any effects on the earth. But who’s to say the earth cannot have two full moons, after all planets in our solar system like Jupiter, Saturn and Mars have more than one. Thanks for reading, and dont forget to drop your comments.

Education / Did You Know This Is The Actual Colour Of A Mirror! -nerdvarsity (+PICS) by CrazyScientist: 8:40pm On Jun 27, 2016
Did you know that the human eye can differentiate 10 Million colours?! But What Colour Is A Mirror you might say silver cause they are usually illustrated that way, and are made from silvery looking things like aluminium, BUT in reality, a mirror is… whatever colour you point at it…BUT WE’RE NOT THERE YET…

Things are whatever colour they are cause they absorb all other colours from white light and reflect that colour that you see them to be. But a mirror reflects all colours so you can also say a mirror is WHITE. But a mirror does not reflect light the way other objects do, it absorbs light at an angle and reflects it at a single outgoing direction, reflecting the image of the object in front of it, BUT WAIT A MINUTE… that is a PERFECT MIRROR, and we live in a world where there are no perfect mirrors (cause they all absorb a little bit of light).

If you look at a typical mirror, you’d find that it best’s reflects light within the 510 manometre range, which we see as GREEN LIGHT, so a mirror is a tiny bit GREEN!

This can be noticed when looking at a “MIRROR TUNNEL”, which is when you face two mirrors together and the scenes replay in each mirrors, you can see that as you look farther into the tunnel, it gets dimmer and you can see a little bit of GREEN, so you can say a typical mirror is….GREEN.

Education / What If A Speedster(The Flash) Ran Past You -NerdVarsity(+PICS) by CrazyScientist: 8:27pm On Jun 27, 2016
Speedsters, they exist in comic fictions and movies, the most popular of them being The Flash (DC Universe) and Quick Silver (Marvel). Comics and movies portray them as super speeding heroes, but what if they were real and were to run past you? Sorry to say but you’d get hurt, not the kind of hurt you can recover from… so lets go on another adventure, and see what would happen if one of them were to run past you…

We’d be looking at Quick Silver as our case study, the slower of the two heroes. Marvel Comics puts his speed at Mach 10 (2.1miles/second), which means he can run around the world in 3 and a Half Hours, if he were to hit you at that speed, it would have the same feeling as being hit by a large ship! Ouch! But we’re not looking at what would happen if he hit, but what would happen if a person running so fast, pushing so much air out of the way was to RUN PAST YOU…

Quicksilver would be so fast that he would only be in our field of view for 8 microseconds to 1millisecond, so we would only see a blue blur ‘flash’ by (get it…, “Flash By”,lol, okay bad joke…MOVING ON…), it takes our brain 13 milliseconds to register an image so by the time you’d have seen Quick Silver, he would already be 44 Metres away from you, so if you actually see him, all you’d see is a blue blur.

Also, moving at ten times the speed of sound, a shockwave will form in front of him, the air around him would be compressed 5.7times and would heat up to 400 degree celcius! 4times the boiling point of water! At that tempearature your blood would become a super critical fluid (having properties of both liquid and gas) and it would start to ooze out of every hole in your body (eyes, ears, skin pores…OUCH!), but this would only happen if you’re 4inches or less from a full speed quick silver.

The air around quicksilver would be travelling at about 10,156km/hr ,tornadoes travelling about 100km/hr can fling cars over 100m in the air and destroy buildings, not to talk of the air around quicksilver thats moving more than 20times that speed. Also, at that speed things like stones, pebbles, sand and coins would be thrown around with the speed of a bullet, so you don’t need to be close to him to witness the mass destruction that would occur.

So if Quick Silver was to run right past you, he’d cause incredible damage both to you and the surrounding environment, but the smarty pants at DC covered up for this impending damage by saying the speed force protects the surrounding from the immense speed of the flash. Thanks for reading, drop your comments and questions down below.
