7 Best Selling Books of All Time – Carrying the Message

I love books.

I like their feel, their smell, their history…everything about them. They seem new and nostalgic all at once. They carry on ideas long after each of us is gone, and it is this method that my Lord used to carry His message of salvation to the world; through the book.

Let’s take a look at the seven best selling books of all time and see if there are some lessons to be learned.


#1 The Holy Bible (Over 6 Billion)
As we look at the best selling books of all time, it should come as no surprise that The Holy Bible is the #1 best selling book. It is the first book to roll off of Gutenberg’s press  and it is estimated that well over 6 billion copies have been printed since.


#2 Quotations from Chairman Mao (Over 900 Million)
The second best selling book of all time appears to be Quotations from Chairman Mao. With over 900 million copies printed, it has been required reading in Chinese schools for decades.


#3 The American Spelling Book (Over 100 Million)
The American Spelling Book, appears third on the list, and was a standard in American schools for decades in the 19th century. As a side note, many of the exercises in reading are either on morals, or are taken directly from scripture, with headings such as, “Our Savior’s Golden Rule.” If you don’t believe me, take a look for yourself in the first edition on Google Books (Take a look starting on page 72). Can you imagine the standard books in our schools using examples and quotations from the scripture? What were they thinking? Did they have no respect for the separation of church and state? (For those of you who can’t tell, I’m being sarcastic).


#4 The Guinness Book of World Records (Combined over 90 Million)
Familiar to all of us, the Guinness Book of World Records is something practically every child in America has gone through trying to find a record to try and break, thereby earning ourselves a place in the next edition of the book.

#5 The World Almanac (Combine 73.5 Million)The World Almanac is filled will all sorts of information that you always wanted to know, but never knew where to find. Can’t quite remember the lyrics to all four stanzas of The Star Spangled Banner? You’ll find them here. It is the fourth stanza from which our great motto comes, “In God is Our Trust,” which was slightly changed as it was imprinted on our coins.

#6 The McGuffey Readers (Combined 60 Million)
Again, the standard for schools well into the 20th century. Here too we find the standard school book, looked at by millions of children, and teaching things like “How to tell people bad news,” and more scandalously, several passages teaching from the Bible, using stories based on lessons from the Bible, or even quoting long passages directly from the Bible as reading exercises. Check out pages 167 and following for instance.



#7 A Message to GarciaNow, as I was doing research and pulling this information out I came across the seventh best selling book. I had never heard of it. For a librarian who loves books, it was startling that in the top 100 books of all time there would be one that I hadn’t heard of, let alone in the top ten. I did a little digging, and here is what I found. First, this short essay was printed in a newspaper without a title. Basically it was an extra editorial written on a slow news day to fill up space. It was an immediate sensation, published in pamphlet form, printed over 40 million times and translated into 37 languages.It is just under 1500 words long, and since it is in the public domain, I have pasted the entire text at the bottom of this post.

A Message to Garcia tells the true story of a military man by the name of Rowan. At the outset of the Spanish-American war, President McKinley needed to get a message to Calixo Garcia, the leader of the rebel group in Cuba. There was no way to get the message there at the time. Even his location wasn’t known, just that he was in hiding in the jungle with his band of rebels. President McKinley called Rowan in, handed him the message and told him who it needed to go to. Rowan landed in Cuba four days later, and two weeks later came out the other side of the island, having delivered the message.

The point the author is making is how Rowan knew that the President needed a job done, and he did it. He didn’t ask questions or protest, he just attended to the task at hand and overcame any difficulty to get the job done.

This story inspired millions of people. Imagine how much more productive we would all be if we did not let things such as doubt, laziness, or problems that arise keep us for fulfilling the task at hand.

Here is the takeaway from this. Rowan delivered a message during what is now a little known war, from a little known President, to another man that you have probably never heard of. While it was important in it’s day, the message bears little importance to most of us now. However, we have a message to deliver as well. It comes from the Lord God, and has been given to us by Christ Jesus in the great commission. He has told us to go and share the gospel with every creature. It is a message that is our specific responsibility to deliver, and if it is not delivered billions will be lost forever.

We simply need to spread the good news of the gospel; the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 defines the gospel in no uncertain terms. If you have become a Christian, you know how to tell someone else to become a Christian. If that requires you to learn a few passages, so be it. If that requires you to step out of your comfort zone, so be it. If it requires you to learn a method of Bible study such as Searching for Truth, or the Open Bible Study, so be it.

Let us stop looking for reasons to fail in our task, and start concentrating on how we are to get the gospel to a lost and dying world in our generation.

Every now and again someone asks how it could be that Moses, the champion of the Lord for the chosen people, could have married an Ethiopian who was therefore of the descendants of Ham, youngest son of Noah. There was strong objection in Israel to such marriages although the assumption that Moses had married before he left Egypt only raises the second question how he later came to marry Zipporah the Midianite when he apparently had left one wife back in Egypt. The word "Ethiopian" is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word "Cush" who in Genesis 10.8 is recorded as one of the sons of Ham. The Cushites became the people known to history as the Sumerians. Eventually many of their tribes migrated, some down the eastern side of the Persian Gulf and into India, where they established the Indus civilization which endured from about 2000 BC to 1500 BC. Others moved down the western side and across Arabia and over the Red Sea into Africa where they became the people known to the Egyptians as Cush, living mainly in what is now the Sudan. Jewish legend has it that Moses when at the court of Pharaoh led an invading army into Cush and returned in triumph but there is probably no truth in that.
"Ethiopia" in the A.V. is taken from old Anglo-Saxon versions that were based largely on the Greek Septuagint. It used this word to translate the Hebrew "Cush", but to the Greeks the whole of the southern world from Africa to India was denoted by the word Ethiopia (English travellers as late as the 17th Century still used the name in that sense). The Egyptians despised the Cushites and called them "vile Cush" and lost no opportunity of waging war on them. It would have been social suicide for Moses to marry into that nation while still at the Egyptian court and most unlikely. Another factor is that by deduction from Scripture records, at that time in history a man was rarely below the age of fifty at marriage, and since Moses fled to Midian at age forty, his marriage whilst there and return forty years later with two sons is perfectly logical. There is no evidence aside from this questionable statement in Num. 12.1 that he had been married before.
Zipporah, his Midianite wife (Exodus 2.15-22) was a descendant of Abraham through his wife Keturah. She was therefore of Semitic race and there would be no valid objection on that score against the union. Midianites were scattered all over the lands south of Canaan and the tribal name of the Sinai Midianites was Cushan (referred to only once in the O.T. in Habakkuk 3.7 "I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble". The almost certain explanation of Num. 12.1 is that by an early copyist's mistake Cushan was turned into Cush by the omission of the final N. The archaic Hebrew N in the days before Ezra was a very insignificant little "squiggle" and could easily have been missed. On this basis the text tells us that Moses had married a Cushan Midianite, which is what Exodus 2 says anyway. The objection raised by Aaron and Miriam to the nationality of his wife was probably evoked by jealousy. They feared that one of Moses' own sons by Zipporah would be appointed by him to succeed him as Israel's leader when the time came. They, and probably most of their fellows, would much prefer a full blooded son of Israel. They need not have worried; when the time did come, the Lord brought forth His own choice for leader, the stalwart Joshua. This is one of the lessons we all find hard to learn, that the Lord is perfectly able to raise up His own instrument to carry on any section of His work when the torch begins to fall from failing hands. We need not plan and devise and agonize for the continuance of that which He has left in our charge for a space of time.
One has to realise that many of the women of the Old Testament history were not of Israel, although of Semitic race Isaac married Rebecca who was of Nahor, brother to Abraham. Jacob married Rachel and Leah of the same stock. Salmon prince of Judah at the entry to the Land married Rahab of Jericho whose name shows she was Semitic, either of Abraham through Esau, Ishmael or Keturah, or of Nahor. Tamar who carried on the Messianic line from Judah was not of Jacob but her name too reveals that she was Semitic. Ruth who married Boaz was a Moabite, from Lot the son of Haran another brother of Abraham. There was no inconsistency therefore in the case of Moses.
There are theories that assert that the name "Cush" means black and that he was a black man, the ancestor of the African races. While it is true that purely Hebrew names often have a meaning which can be traced by the construction of the word as for example Jesus in Greek is the Hebrew Joshua, or more properly Jehoshua, which means God is Saviour, the same practice cannot be applied to non-Hebrew names. There is no Hebrew word closely resembling Cush that means black. Cush was given his name long before there were any Hebrews or any Hebrew language. He was certainly the ancestor of the Sumerians and that language is the oldest one that is now known, but the Sumerian word for black is "gig" - not very similar. No one knows what the nature of the language spoken by Noah and his sons was and only that later languages were derived from it. It is probably true that many of the black peoples of Africa are descended from Cush but their black colour developed after they had settled in Africa and not before. The various, colours of men in different climes are the result of long habitation under specialised conditions of climate and food, and probably other factors not yet completely understood. There is no reason for thinking that Noah had grandsons in a variety of colours,. In fact there is evidence to the contrary. According to Genesis 10, Cush had a brother named Phut. The Phutites in later generations also crossed into Africa and colonised the north, right across the continent to the Atlantic in days when the present Sahara desert was a fertile well-watered country abounding in forests and animal life. Today there are cave-paintings still existing in that barren and uninhabited waste executed by, and depicting, those Phutites of four thousand years ago but they are not shown as black. They are painted with red and yellow skins; their descendants today are deep brown.
There is no means of determining the colour of the first men, nor yet that of Noah and his sons. The white races tend to think that they must have been white; but the Chinese insist, quite as logically, that they were yellow. We just do not know. What we do know is that God "hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on the face of the earth. (Acts 17.16) and that all men everywhere, of whatever colour, are able to propagate their own kind with each other, Perhaps the Lord, who is the supreme Artist in creation, sees some advantage in having men ultimately develop five outward colours, whilst still being men inside, just as He has ordained variety in the rest of His Creation.
Coming back to the main point, there is not much doubt that the only woman Moses married, the mother of his children was the daughter of the Midianite Chieftain. Jethro gave him hospitality during his term of exile and proved to be as much a reverential worshipper of the true God as was Moses himself.

Well the this book come into my life it has been called a messenger angel a best friend but it would describe it as a work of the enemy this is how I first come into contact with Christ embassy through a school teacher in London who is not on TV she seemed nice she love the fact I knew the bible very well in fact she was shocked she have me marked down as biblically illiterate and was shock to find I was well versed in the teaching of the bible a little more the average bear in the woods so she start to give me these little books call the rhapsody of realties I put them in the bin and under the computer desk I was arrogant in my thinking I thought what could it teach me and the woman start give it the woman I was in a relationship with she was reading it on her own and I was more interested in getting a woman who deeply loved me giving me breathing room I will tell you this not I was blind to the love this woman had and I was sent to teach the bible but I was more into the flesh than the word of God if I was living for God I would have not lost her to this cult called Christ embassy

she gone now they took the most angelic woman I have ever meet and turned her into fruit and nuttier bar as I have said before this book changed our life for ever my life ended after going to Christ embassy and I was born again into a new purpose to live and expose the church with all my might and power see as time went on I thought I was the only one who was damaged with church but over time I come across other people in the city where I live now who live was also destroyed with them I become more angry with the church on hearing there story as well it was not the same as my story but it was shocking similar story one of my friend wife left after going to the church the members started to tell his wife he was not right where in fact he was nice man this was because they thought she owned prosperity the man was doing an engineering degree he brought his wife over to the UK and she was lonely  so she meet some people from Christ embassy so as they worked on her she moved in with the church people and they told her to leave him he was not abusing her or anything like this he did not agree with church teaching just like me he was so angry he even wanted to blow the church up with a bomb but he was talking  out of this  he is over the pain caused here but he was told this was not Christian and he had a good think about it he relented on this course of action?
I was that angry myself I was going to “kill Pastor Chris” and I have the skills to do it? but it would be against Gods law after the intense pain

went done I thought about a better way to fight him and not loss my soul and my life so I start to renew my mind with the bible and am still doing it; so I now fighting for all the people that are in pain and suffering because of Christ embassy see if you want to win a war you must have recon on the enemy that uses mass media with glim and glamor of wealth to entice the simple there is a case I am working on the now with a person who has husband in the church in the UK and they are doing the same thing to a person he wants to leave his wife who does not agree with the church they have slept in separate beds for 2 years since he started going to the church in fact this is no simple man he is in politics so this church in infiltrating to the highest to the lows in our society


I am sad my friend I contacted when I found her husband wants to leave her for the church and she is the most honest person you could ever meet she is almost childlike in personality she was telling me that the husband sees some corruption in the church he rebuked a member for driving without insurance and tax and the reason was she was told you should pay tithes first before all your personal bills he told the woman that if don’t get insurance he would go to the police now more people say ok I am sorry I’ll get it sorted and this woman is white not African and the answer is this from the pastor we shall bind the spirits he said should you not give to “Tiberius Caesar Augustus” which is Caesar and give to God which is Gods meaning obey the law of the land they prayed

against him for trying to do the right things instead of repenting of their evil actions, he was very angry this is the same church that tried to get me arrested for recording it this same pastor was the one that destroyed my friends marriage who is in Nigeria now what should have happened was all the people should have had got together and said lets pay the bill but no the man who does the right thing is the devil and full of evil spirits ?
