i start acura mdx 2011 and the accerleration point is raised above 1, the car making louder noise than usual and I cant accelerate, i have to put off the car ad start it again and it starts working normal but this happpens every other day and not pleasant. i scanned the car and they said I should change the throttle body and rocker arm but the price I'm seeing is ridiculous.

please who knows any dealer in ladipo to get the best prices for quality? they are still other parts to buy like steering rack and pump, lower arm and shocks.

If the vehicle has been scanned and they have told you what you need to do, I'll advise you do that soon. Throttle body is a very important component of a car and if it's faulty, it will lead to other related issues like knocking sound, high fuel consumption, wrong air/fuel mixture etc.

If you are in Lagos and you can spare time to visit Willoughby Street in Oyingbo, they have more reliable parts for Honda cars than ladipo. You can search for luvinhubby here on nairaland and contact him for anything you need, he's 100% reliable.

Baba don't just throw parts into vehicles that way na, you'll just be wasting money doing that.

If your vehicle isn't showing any code, then you might want to go for physical inspection to ascertain that all components are in perfect shape. It will save you cost.

Please explain that oil cap trick. I want to learn. I've come across a lot of cars that have puffs of air from that oil cap if opened when engine is running. What does it mean?

Na my local mechanic teach me oo. He said once you open your oil cap and the oil doesn't splash, then the engine compression needs to be checked. The reason it doesn't splash is because air is actually filling up the engine which isn't suppose to be. I've also heard two other mechanic say this but I don't know how true. But he said it's just a quick check for engine compression.

Even the noise will tell you something is wrong because you will hear how air goes through easily compared to when the compression is good and there's no air, what you'll hear instead will be like engine oil boiling and trying to splash/gush out.

Please get your car scanned to ascertain the reason why that check engine light is on, because there are so many reasons why a check engine light comes on, and I'm sure you'll also get the culprit for your high fuel consumption when you get the car scanned.

The break light that's also illuminated can also be caused by many things and this can be detected by a scanner. Firstly check to ensure your handbrake is not pulled out of position.

Hmmm... Does your engine burn oil and how is the timing too? Try checking the pressure of your engine. You can keep the engine running, then open your oil cap to see if the sound that comes out is mixed with air (that's a quick pressure test I was taught)

I use same EOD and my acceleration is top notch. I rival cars on the road and I've been known on 3rd mainland bridge for my constant speed between 4:30 - 5pm daily.

Kindly check your engine thoroughly... There must be an issue somewhere.

The 8th gen from 2010 to 2012 is actually better than any 7th gen.

Hmmm... This isn't the case for me. Just like @agoodman mentioned, I also prefer the 7th generation due to the faster acceleration it has (for me). The fact that both generations share the K24 engine series is just makes me see no reason to get the 8th generation (for now). I'm just stuck with my EOD even after several opportunities to upgrade the car, but I just won't give it up.

The 2017 Accord is the only generation I think I might move directly to when the time is right.

Hello guys,
Pls my 08 Honda Civic (I-robot) is running rich (consuming fuel) at 12.1 - 12.3L/100km and smoking a bit. The smoke is not visible but one can smell it and there's some black soot in the exhaust.

The issue started over 2 months ago. My usual consumption used to range from 9.8 - 10.2L/100km till the the problem started.

There's no check engine light and no codes. Scanned myself and an electrician also did.
Both upstream and downstream O2 sensors, catalytic converter and MAF sensor in place.

I've changed complete set of plugs twice. Used the common NGK the first time, and used one Belgium set the second time. On both occasions, I got improvements of only about 0.1L/100km.

My exhaust has been checked and they said no leaks.

I also told mech to change my pressure regulator (returner). There was no change.

The only significant change I made to the car before this issue started was changing the oil from the common Mobil 20/50 the former owner used to Castrol GTX 5/20 as recommended by Honda. Oil level has not dropped and there are no leaks.

The problem is frustrating because the car has been a really good car since I bought it till this issue started. And I no ready to dey save for engine replacement now.

Please help.

For a car of such age, I believe if it still has the same factory engine that came with it, then the engine is simply showing signs of aging. I'm not an expert in these things but I'll advise you carry out a live data scan on the vehicle using those top level scanners to see if any anomalies will be noticed. If after doing all this and nothing is detected, Oga no stress yourself, the engine is only showing signs of aging and that's nothing to worry about if you ask me. You only noticed this issue because you pay better attention to details.

Ok. Let me explain something to you...
First, I can bet my balls that no Honda key can open my car except my key. Some never-do-wells have actually tried opening my car on two occasions but failed.
Honda cars keys are actually high security keys, much more secure than Toyota keys. I won't explain why that is, but I can explain why you had such experience.
Most of those cars are more than 15yrs old. Over the years, there is wear and tear on both the key blande and the lock pins. As the pins wear out, they no longer fit tightly in their location and tends to fail. The failure can come in two ways. Either it allows more keys to open it, or it fails to unlock even with the correct (old) key. When it starts getting difficult to unlock with the correct keys, most Nigerian locksmith, instead of doing a proper fix, they go and file down the worn out pins or even remove them entirely. This further worsens the situation. The pins are the security guards. Removing even one is an abomination.
What I do to maintain my key security (which I advice anyone reading this to do): Whenever I buy a new Honda, I order a new keyblade (or the whole key) from AliExpress. I send them a clear picture of my old key and pay for key cutting service. In my experience, they analyze the picture, decipher the key code, and then cut a perfect key. This is much easier if you already have the key code.
There's a good chance that this new perfect key might have a problem opening your car door or turning the ignition because your keyhole is already worn. Try it on less frequently used keyholes on your car, like the glove compartment, the rear seat fold release or the trunk pass through. If it works, then comes the second step.
I order for Hon66 lock pins from AliExpress. Then I tear down the door and bring out the key cylinder. I tear this down further to bring out all the worn out lock pins. Then I repin them to exactly match my new key. I also do this to the ignition hole as it is the most used keyhole and most worn out.
This brings back the security of your key as Honda intended it.
All these might sound complicated to the average Nigerian car owner, but remember this is a security issue, it is NOT supposed to be easy.
If you can not do this and can not get your locksmith to do it, then don't blame Honda when 5 different keys open your car.

My car actually locked me and my family out after church on Sunday, the key hole refused to unlock the car, it got stuck in the lock position. The remote got bad and I've been using the keyhole to lock it for the past 3weeks now. Omo I suffer that day ehn.😭😭😭

In my own opinion, old Honda keys are averagely secured due to the average level of anti theft technology embedded in it compared to its counterparts.

I have had first hand experience with the usage one Honda key to open several same Honda vehicles but cannot start the car makes the security be average in my ratings. Because even though the whole car cannot be stolen, other components of the car can be dismantled and removed due to this flaw in their key security.

I had the above issue for more than a year before my key fob finally stopped working two weeks ago.

First, I want to say a big thank you to the creator of this forum. I’ve been looking for something like this for years—nice one!

I own my first Honda car, an LX Accord 2013, which I bought as a Nigerian-used vehicle in December 2022. I got it at a very good deal at the time, but deep down, I knew things don’t come that cheap. I was prepared for whatever issues came up! 😄

A week after purchase, the problems started. First, there was oil leakage from the engine, followed by the engine struggling to generate enough power to climb hills. Then, the check engine light and other warning lights popped up—my dashboard was like a Christmas tree! 😅 Upon inspection, the engine was opened up, and it was packed with oil sludge! There were so many issues: the oil pump was faulty, there were piston problems, and more. I decided to replace the engine entirely, and honestly, that was the best decision I made!

After that, I decided to upgrade the look of the car. I transformed it into a 2015 Honda Accord Touring model and replaced the seats with leather. I also installed four brand-new tires, replaced the vapor canister (to resolve the persistent check engine light), changed the spark plugs, brake pads, and steering rack.

To be honest, I didn’t do all the repairs and upgrades at once. It took me about four months to complete everything, costing around ₦1.5m to ₦1.7m in total. But mehn! I fell in love with the car! Money well spent!

Since April 2023, I haven’t had a single check engine light come on. I service the car religiously when the oil life percentage reaches 15%. Maintenance-wise, I always use full synthetic foreign engine oil. For coolant, I stick to the original Honda Long Life Coolant Type 2. I’m very cautious about what goes into the engine—engine don cost oo! 😅

Regarding fuel consumption, I always refill the tank when it gets to half. I’ve never let it go below that point—it’s easier and costs less that way. On average, I get around 170 to 190 miles from a full tank to half. It costs me about ₦35k to ₦40k to fill it up from half.

Currently, I’m planning to get a Honda CR-V EX-L 2018. 😁

Before I forget, a big shout-out to my mechanic, Alhaji Muri! He’s the most honest and respectful mechanic I’ve ever worked with. He’s especially good with electrical issues and has plenty of diagnostic tools to tackle any problem. Another shout-out to My Parts Nigeria, where I get my engine oil, filters, coolant, and other parts—they sell genuine products imported from the USA.

I love the way you detailed and give attention to servicing your vehicle. I will keep saying it that, a perfectly maintained Honda is the best car you can ever use because it will be too reliable.

You also knew when to cut your loss and went for a replacement engine instead of spending money fixing and giving yourself headaches from countless reoccurring issues.

I experienced this problem early this year. I woke up in the next day only to discover my honda accord wasn't responding to Fob keyless entry. At first I thought they stole my car battery or the battery was dead. Until I open it with the key and noticed the battery is intact then i start the car. It starts at once but the buttons on the fob not responding.

So I thought maybe the battery on the fob is dead. Just because I used it the previous night. It was what I used to lock the car. So I open the fob and removed the battery then test it with my tongue.

It has some little low charge. Then I put back the battery. The car makes a sound immediately I put back the battery. But when I pressed the buttons it didn't respond. I removed the battery several times but it doesn't that sound again or respond to press.

So I just leave it till I will buy another battery. Yesterday I bought a new battery and When you insert battery it blink red light just once. But the car doesn't respond. I have removed and insert multiple things it doesn't respond.

What could be the problem. I need help

Why are Honda users suddenly experiencing this same issue lately.

I and two other of my friends currently have this same issue which started two weeks ago. I was already planning on getting another key entirely sef.

I guess I'll just do a reprogramming as our ogas have suggested.

I hope you take the advise of those who have given you the go ahead to purchase the car.

That car is a plane on wheels. Performance + Luxury + Tech + design + sport = ACURA TL.

My only advice: if you have a terrible maintenance culture or you plan to cut corners when it comes to repairs, please don't bother buying it because you will regret it. That car is a premium car and not a Camry that you can mess around with. The parts and experience mechanics are readily available and not even as expensive as the Toyota counterparts, so you have nothing to worry about.

Very unnecessary. Just ensure your 02 sensor is in good condition. And if you're bothered about the check engine light on your dashboard due to the unavailable catalyst, you can get and install spacers or China catalyst which costs less.

I have an issue with my Honda Civic 2008 model. My car uses drum brakes (lining) at the back and it's always leaking oil every now and then. My mechanic and even brake master has changed the rubber severally but after few days or weeks it starts leaking again. I was now advised to convert it to brake disc to have peace of mind. Pls like how much would all the mechanical parts needed for the conversion cost before they start calling inflated price for me. Please....

Only someone who has done same conversion can give you accurate information on this.

Get the mechanic to give you a list of things that will be needed, then you can go to Oyingbo if you're in Lagos to confirm prices yourself. I think this is the best bet for you.

Also remember that with the current situation of Nigeria, the longer you wait to fix/buy something, the higher the prices increases.

I was not prepped up to the realities of owning car. I thought it will just be a "set and leave" kind of situation where I only need to routine checks daily and fix some issues here and there.

But I dey learn.

To be honest, cars are actually made to be "set and leave" when you you purchase it brand new. The situation of our country in terms of roads, substandard vehicles parts, substandard oils, inexperienced engineers, poor maintenance culture (for some people) etc, are the reasons why vehicles always have issues.

My secret is to get every bad parts changed immediately and carry out routine maintenance on my car. It's expensive but in the long run, I achieve the "set and leave" goal at almost 98% of the time.

I Have a very unique issue on my Civic 06. The dipstick broke into the engine and I have been using it for a few weeks.

I know It is not right: but I do not know how to the the fallen bit out. Took it to the mechanic he said if he can take the (I can't remember what he called it) but something like the oil pan out he could remove it and close it back. But upon trying. He realised that the pan and the engine could not be detached as they were fastened pretty hard. Said to remove it may need to drop the engine.

Just to put into context, what was left of the deep stick is the cover, almost the entire length of the dipstick fell into the engine.

Also I think my top gasket is blown out. It is my first ever car. Story: one evening I went out with my wife to see a movie and on our way back, I decided to use the AC since we are on the highway and it was a bit hot outside. She dey rub my head as we dey go and I no really dey pay attention to the dashboard. When I got off the highway and met slower traffic I decided to turn off the AC to let some natural air in. That was when I looked at my dash.

My engine's temperature was almost on the red. I immediately pulled over. Immediately I packed and turnoff the car, the kind of steam that came out of the engine bay ehn? I have never seen it before. I hurriedly open the bonnet to air the engine bay, from first look, my radiator was dry. The car sat there for about 40 minutes. Then I refilled the radiator with coolant after ward. Then I set off.

But I noticed the sound of the vehicle was not the same. I did not get 3 minutes away, then I realized the temperature was rising again. Then I knew it was more than coolant. All the coolant had gone off.

It was late and I was close to the house I was buying water at intervals to put into the radiator so that I can get home. I got home! Mechanic came to check it the next morning; the fuse giving electricity to the fan was gone. The fan had stopped working all along.

We replaced the fuse and it was good again. However the sound of the engine has not been the same. Leading me to thing the top gasket is gone.

Please can someone help confirm this.

For the dip stick issue, I wouldn't want to conclude with what your mechanic said for now. If I'm correct, the dipstick has a compartment of its own inside the engine bay and my best bet is that the top of the engine will be taken out to be able to assess and remove the dipstick. I don't understand the correlation between oil pan/sump and bringing down your engine just to remove the broken dipstick. You should confirm from another trusted mechanic before agreeing to this. I'll also advise you stop driving it around for now until the dipstick is removed, so as to avoid a negligible engine damage.

Concerning the sound of your engine after you experienced overheating, you need to scan your vehicle and post the code so the house can direct accordingly. It won't be nice if engine is being tampered based on assumptions.

I discovered that my catalytic converters are missing. My mechanic recommended constructing an alternative setup instead of buying new catalytic converters, as they might be stolen again in the future. Should I proceed with this suggestion?

What car model is this Please?

Get a tokunbo replacement if you can afford it. You can also settle for the China new ones too which are cheaper and you'll have nothing to worry about. The two suggestions saves you stress and headaches. All those rubbish these guys put into the exhaust system and call it catalyst does more harm than good to your vehicle.


N:B.
If your car is between 2002-2008, catalyst in these vehicles for those years are strictly for emission control and has nothing to do with fuel efficiency or anything else.

To install it is very easy. You need to unmount your stereo from the dashboard (you can check YouTube for videos on how to do this. I also used YouTube videos for guidance when I did mine). Then disconnect your CD player connector from its port and replace it with the Bluetooth connector, then mount it back. That's all.

Pros:
1. You can stream unlimited music directly from your phone and connect to your stereo via Bluetooth

2. Receive calls via your stereo

3. Unlike those low quality FM transmitter, you enjoy a very good sound quality without interruption from other passing vehicles.

Cons:
1. Your CD player will no longer work because it has been substituted for the Bluetooth connector.
