@ So you think!

The employer had preferred a white, but since no one else applied, she had to make do with the people that applied.
TravelRe: The Bitter-truth As An International Student In The Us by cvibe: 5:30pm On Nov 01, 2009
@ justwise,

That was a factual experience from a Nija student i know.

As a student, she saw an advert on the students notice board for a student job located just beside her house. She took it down after reading it.

On the day of the interview there were only two applicants (she and one other person who saw the ad before she did) The employer interviewed both of them and said she would wait for more applicants to show up.

As no one else showed up, she decided to offer the job to this person i know, who happened to be the best of the two applicants.

Also, the easiest and fastest way to cut out competition and get a job as a student when you see a vacancy advert on a notice board is to take that advert down if you can. That way, you reduce the no of people who will apply for the same job with you, thereby increasing your chances.

More reason why one should learn a skill before departure.  At least, you can charge fellow students for haircut etc , this gives you extra money.

Nigeria is a country where the citizens rely on the leaders to the the right thing and that's just what they are not getting.

@ Okonkwosh

You will survive but it may be difficult, and difficulty often frustrates students studying abroad especially when they can't get jobs or work enough hours to cope due to restriction to 20hrs work.

@ Poster,

If you're in lagos, going to their head office is a waste of time. Go directly to their IT dept located at GTB Tiamuyu Savage VI. Those are the guys who integrate your GTB payment platform with interswitch. Those are the guys who matter, all other ones don't have a clue.

No wonder the King of Swaziland likes to choose a bride every year in order to sample the yearly harvests.

@ Poster,

Nigerian students know how to survive in every situation they find themselves.
From my own experience when i was a student in the UK, rather than go looking for 20 hr or 5pound per hour job, i was buying and selling stuff on the internet in my free time. Never under estimate the power of the internet to survive as a student, you just need to be trustworthy.

I am still wondering why NNPC and major oil companies cannot be mandated to build refineries.

All around the Gulf of Mexico in the US, these major oil companies have refineries scattered everywhere. You will never see a single flare, but rather bright halogen lamps.

It is about time NNPC stops signing nonsense JV's and start living up to its name.

NNPC needs injection of fresh ideas and new vision to drive its future growth.
