The morning my cousin got his NYSC call-up letter, the house didn’t erupt in celebration; it fell into a tense, suffocating silence. He had been posted to the core North. My aunt immediately went into active prayer mode, binding every "spirit of accident" and highway kidnapper she could think of. That is the reality of the National Youth Service Corps today. What used to be a proud rite of passage has turned into a high-stakes gamble with the lives of our youth. When General Yakubu Gowon established NYSC in 1973, Nigeria was bleeding from the wounds of a brutal civil war. The logic was solid: take a graduate from Ibadan, drop them in Enugu or Gombe, and let them realize that the "other" tribe doesn't bite. It was a beautiful, necessary experiment in national integration. But Nigeria in 1973 is a completely different planet from Nigeria in 2026. Today, the original goals of NYSC are already being met organically in our day-to-day lives, largely thanks to the internet and social media. You don’t need to endure a grueling, body-breaking 14-hour road trip to Gombe just to learn about the beautiful culture of the people that live there. We see it on our TikTok feeds daily. We discuss it on X. We interact daily. We trade. We argue, laugh, and share experiences across ethnic lines without moving an inch from our bedrooms. Beyond digital connections, Nigerians are simply more mobile than ever before. Internal travel happens naturally for business, school, and vacation. Inter-tribal marriage, which used to be a major family crisis decades ago, is now standard practice. Love has defied borders long before NYSC camp officials blew their first whistle. We are already integrating ourselves. So why are we still forcing mass migrations under the guise of unity, especially when the roads have become a literal hazard? With the current state of insecurity and the terrifying spate of kidnappings targeting corps members on major highways, forcing a graduate from Osun to travel across the country to Zamfara is, quite frankly, unconscionable. No parent should spend four or five years training their child through university , celebrating graduation, only to start crowdfunding ransom money months later because their child was ambushed on an interstate road. It is a price too heavy for a symbolic gesture of patriotism. It is time to localize NYSC posting. These vibrant, educated youths can better serve communities where they actually understand the local dynamics, language, and immediate needs. Imagine the impact if a graduate from Enugu uses their skills to develop a localized agricultural tech solution for their home state, or if a medical graduate from Kano serves in a rural hospital where they can instantly communicate with patients in Hausa without needing a translator. With the need for local militia against Fulani terrorists, imagine if the NYSC youths of a community actually received military training to defend their communities against Fulani marauders? That is true development. The system needs a common-sense overhaul: make the state of origin (or state of residence) the absolute default. If a young graduate is adventurous and explicitly wants to explore a different part of the country, give them the option to opt-in for an out of state posting. But don't make cross-country travel a mandatory, life-threatening prerequisite for serving one’s country. We cannot keep using 20th-century solutions to solve 21st-century problems. Let our youths serve, but let them live to see the future they are building. Localizing NYSC isn't a sign of division; it's a mature admission that times have changed, and the safety and utility of our graduates must finally come first. |
I’m pleasantly surprised at the number of American clubs on the list |
ADC will come a distant third |
I have mixed feelings about this drama. On the one hand, I feel that Fubara is a victim of a corrupt system of cronyism and godfatherism. On the other hand, I realize that Fubara himself did not deserve to be governor in the first place. The same system that is fighting him brought him to power. Much as the current political system disgusts me, I feel that Fubara is disloyal and ungrateful. He did not even campaign nor earn any serious votes. Wike literally handed the governorship to him on a platter of God. It did not even take him three months to start fighting Wike. It disgusts me to say this in this particular case, but as a general principle, agreements must be respected. Fubara agreed to certain conditions before Wike handed the position to him. A decent man will at least wait till the second term before he begins to renegotiate terms of the agreement |
The prophetic voice |
ogododo:I just glanced through this article. But I saw the part of Ribadu. In case Kperogi doesn’t know, NSA Ribadu was caught on tape saying in Hausa language that the bandits and terrorists are his brothers. He is clearly a terrorist sympathizer, who will work to protect his Fulani terrorist brothers. He cannot be trusted to deal with domestic terrorism in Nigeria |
If you think China is going to let Aba manufacture shoes and plastics and straws, you are delusional. China has as much interest in seeing Nigeria remain a consuming country. They can’t imagine losing a 200 million export market. |
Delat521: |
Delat521:This is a ridiculous take. So, why is Iran not attacking the American ships currently imposing the blockade if the can? Don’t you know that this blockade is an existential threat to Iran? It’s the ultimate act of war without firing a single bullet (unless they dare defy the blockade). Iran is bleeding economically and they can’t do shit about it. The worst they can do is to threaten the strait of Hormuz and make other countries scared of using it. America is the ultimate world power. What the rest do is jus talk |
But yet, they can’t ship goods in and out of their country. And also, Iran is stopping good from doing to euroeoe through the straits, what is Germany doing about it |
WriterNig:America has not even deployed one tenth of their military capabilities against Iran. This isn’t a necessary war, but a war of choice. If it were a necessary war, you’d realize that you never mess with America. Importantly, one thing holding Trump back is tha a vast majority of the American public do not support this war. Even the military Generals and strategists do not believe this war is necessary. That’s a big factor in morale levels. |
But it’s in your national interest for US to join Ukraine war Abi? Hypocrites |
Jokay07:They hate and despise the USA. They only need US security spending. Once the money is no longer flowing, they’d start showing their true colors. |
God gazes upon you with love. Unconditional, covenantal love. |
Duh |
This gives an idea of the real the population of the North. Their population as recorded today is fraudulently inflated for electoral and allocation purposes. Nowhere in the world is a desert region more populated than a coastal region. |
El-Rufai did far worse to his political opponents and enemies. He is being treated with kids’ gloves |
This is a disingenuous article. He did not mention Atiku. Atiku is one of the main architects of the PDP’s demise. He hangars up against the party in 2014/15. He did not respect the zoning arrangement in 2023 and the rest is history. |
[quote author=BlackViper post=138668532]This is what happens when you prioritise someone else's problems over your own. Over the past 3 years, Iran has basically turned its arms and weaponry industry into Russia's main supply for drones and rockets in the Ukraine War. These are resources which they would have needed for their own self defence. Also, instead of concentrating on American and Israeli military targets, they have been firing indiscriminately at civilian populations mainly in Israel, but also across several other Middle East countries. By comparison, the Americans and Israelis have quietly concentrated on destroying Iran’s rocket launching facilities and capabilities. The sad and unfortunate incident of the girls school that was struck which led to the deaths of 148 school girls, happened because the school was located near an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IIRGC) rocket launching facility. It is possible that in less than two week's time, we may be entering into the next phase of the war which will be that of boots on the ground which will be led by the IDF, although Trump has said he will not rule out the possibility of American troops getting involved. [/ Iran’s goal has always been death and destruction, that’s why the don’t care to tailor their attacks to military target. They have also been attacking their neutral (at least in this war) neighbors. Can you imagine this regime having a nuclear weapon? They’d not only use it, but readily give it to other terrorist groups. |
A rufai is not a journalist in the traditional sense. He is more of a news pundit or commentator than a journalist. |
Is it the same El-Rufai that routinely demolished the home of his opponents and critics? He is lucky that house is still standing. |
Gotocourt:Then many people will be “candidates” to cash out. |
abc115:Do you think Tinubu was really begging him? Tinubu played him like a drum. Have you heard of stooping to conquer? El-Rufai is pained. |
This is so hard to watch. |
I am Obi-dient, but I hope Peter Obi will not let himself be used by the Fulani North. He should be careful. |
I hope the Christians see this and step up their participation in politics. CAN used to be their nightmare, and it needs to be restored |
Why must it be national ? Why don’t the states do it themselves ? |
I cants stand this guy. Such an obnoxious, disgusting piece of shit 🤮🤮 |
Privatepart00:Iran knows it doesn’t stand a chance. Even China would not dare America. America seize Venezuela against China’s interests, what did the do? They released an angry statement. China has everything to lose if Iran’s regime goes down, but they can’t do anything to America. On the other hand, try and mess with America’s interest anywhere in the world and you’d see why America is a super power. America will stop at nothing to promote or advance its strategic interests. You think America’s huge military expenditure is just for defense? It’s also for advancing her interests by force anywhere in the world if necessary. |
You can’t fix stupid. |
