It does so greatly. When Nigeria got her independence, there was so much hope in the leadership of the country but after few years things started deteriorating and instead of the people to insist on building a vibrant, technologically and agriculturally advanced society we then sought for divine intervention ONLY about the societal problems. This was when most of the mega churches today started springing up to give 'hope' to the people since it seemed as if the government has failed.

The political and religious leaders know that people are focused on the divine intervention in areas of infrastructural and economic growth, so while the religious leaders focus on submitting what people have been they've been able to, they are being asked to submit it at the religious centres in order for it to be multiplimiraculously the political leaders focus on feeding the people with crumbs which keeps them at bay and urge them to continue seeking divine attention to the societal issues because they make people believe it's not a physical one. There are cases where religious leaders will say that some sickness is not meant for the hospital. Why will the political leaders bother themselves about building health systems, since the religious leaders are there to perform the duties of the medical personnel.

I believe in supernatural healing but we can still pray in a well equipped hospital.

Countries like Brazil, Singapore who we started the journey of nationhood insisted in building a nation. Look at where they are today while we left are leaders to plunder the nation as they like and we sought for divine intervention in Power Generation, Water Supply, Agricultural produce, roads and rail network, educational and health institutions etc
Nice, the countries you mentioned had proactive and pragmatic leaders that made them what they are today. Did any religion stop them! No. We've got to confront our challenges as a nation and stop this blame game.

that is the problem, you expect government to do everything. Yes the govt is non existent, but the role of private people in nation building isn't being utilized. The churches are worth more than all multinationals in nigeria. Imagine tax free unaccounted revenue accruing to be a few people who claim to have the account number of the most high where they remit these monies.

The op is simply saying, if all these monies being concentrated in the hands of a non-producttive sector like religion was put as private contribution to nation building, most of the problems which we have today that makes a lot to run to these churches will be eraadicated.

There you go again, please the church is not worth more than the multinationals we have in Nigeria. I believe you know where the bulk of our revenue comes from. It's definitely not from religious organization.

Yes, the role of private people in our country hasn't been fully utilized. How can you then blame these religious bodies for it. Dangote is the richest black man in the world and has created thousands of jobs across Nigeria and Africa. Did any religion stop him from setting-up his businesses which has added greatly to our GDP? No!
In your capacity as a citizen of this country, if you decide to empower the youths within your purview will any pastor or imam stop you from doing that? No!

In the course of my work I have been privileged to see the financial statement of some of the religious bodies the op mentioned and I know the figures aren't fantastic enough to bank-roll the key developmental indices we crave for.

The point is, you cannot separate how great a nation will be from her leaders. The likes of India, Singapore and US had leaders with great dream and goal that helped shape the landscape of their present clime. The leaders will have to take the lead then me and you will follow suit in making our nation great.

how can people invest in sme growth when we feel sowing of seeds, tithing and all other rubbish people do aare a panacea for poverty. As long as people still view a divine solution to every of life's ills then we can never develop infrastructually.

The bane of capitalist growth is the private sector, how can that area grow when a majority of people are throwing money voluntarily into non productive religious centres. Very much akin to waiting for manna from heaven in terms of infrastrutural and industrial growth.
The issue there is; how does the religious organizations stop a governor or president from putting up critical infrastructure for our development?

See bro, the citizens of every nation are expected to elect leaders that will develop and empower them. But what do we have today? We have leaders that come into power just to steal our common wealth and invariably impoverish the citizenry.

Our major issue today, isn't religion rather lack of quality leaders.

This is the problem with nigeria, reading from the comments on this thread it becomes very clear, out of 200million, 199million are religious fools who take offence when their belief system is threatened by the truth, while the op is part of the 1million with senses.

Thanks for that view which I have held for many years to come, quote me anywhere nigeria just as western nation eventually did, will saturate themselves with religious centers and soon turn these worship centers to hotels and brothels. The country is suffering because people kkeep looking upwards for divine solutions to physical problems. Yet we wonder why nigeria is nowhere. Op don't be bothered by those efulefu speaking from their rectums to counter youe valid points. They are the poor and the problem of this nation. Imagine if all tithes throw into these churches were used a soft loans for sme growth. Nigeria would have been rid of all these petty problems thaat push the majority to churches.

The pastors and imams know this, thus for them it doesn't matter, the more the poverty a black man encounters the more growth in religious centers where he contributes 10percent of his meagre earnings in futile hope for redemption. How else do we define fantastically foolish and inferior beings
The point is does the presence of a religious house stop anyone, yourself inclusive from setting-up a factory?
Secondly, on the tithe you mentioned...Churches do not apply force to people for them to pay it. Yes, I agree with you we have a structural problem as regards development and other indices of human need, but these problems were not caused by religious organizations.

Hence, attacking churches based on your negative perception about them isn't gonna solve our problem as a nation. And for your information, US has as many church as we have in Nigeria.

Investment / Fear Grips Nigerians In MMM, Others As Ponzi Website, Ultimate Cycler, Crashes by dabiko(m): 5:20pm On Dec 02, 2016
One of the ponzi schemes in Nigeria, Ultimate Cycler has crashed, sending panic waves across many of its Nigerian members who have invested their money in it as well as those who have equally invested in others such as MMM.

The ponzi website, Ultimate Cycler went down early Thursday morning, specifically around 10:30am(Nigerian time), shutting out every member who owns an account with it. When accessed, the site initially displayed an error line of code, before displaying ”Error 500” in bold letters, then it proceeded to display another message: “Be right back. We are currently updating the site to give you a more pleasurable experience and will be back online shortly.

Our update estimation is to be complete over the next 6 – 12 hours. Thank you, Peter Wolfing.” Ultimate Cycler is a new ponzi scheme that followed MMM. This new money doubling scheme claims a promise of better returns on invested money than MMM. The hook for Ultimate Cycler is members get a return of N50,000 after paying N12,500 to a fellow member he or she registered under.

As at the time of filing this report, the ponzi website has still not come to life. Dangers for members who have invested in it or others like MMM is that when such websites go down, chances are that it never comes up again and hence, “investors'” money goes with it. So, will Ultimate Cycler ever come back to life? This is question on the minds of every member.

Politics / Court Will Decide Edo PDP Candidate – INEC Chairman by dabiko(m): 8:26am On Aug 22, 2016
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, at the weekend said the issue of who flies the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Edo governorship election does not rest with the commission. He said that is for the judiciary to decide.

The INEC boss, while speaking during a working visit to the headquarters of Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation newspapers in Lagos, said given the numerous numbers of cases currently in court over the leadership of the PDP and the party’s governorship ticket in Edo, it is only the court that can have the final say on who the governorship candidate of the party would be.

While explaining why the commission listed Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the PDP candidate when it released the list of candidates for the September 10 election, Yakubu said the decision was based on a subsisting court order. According to the INEC boss, the commission merely obeyed a court order by listing Iyamu as the candidate.

“They say they have numerous cases in court. I told you earlier that within a period of three days we got five judgments and orders. In fact, one order came with a threat that if we did not do what the court says we should do, we will be committed for contempt. At the moment, on the basis of the judgment of the Port Harcourt High Court, we accepted the nomination from the Makarfi led caretaker committee.

“We have to submit the name of a candidate by the 11th of this month. But, when we did so, we put in bracket, court order. Again, Ize-Iyamu has dragged INEC to court and was granted an interim injunction by the judge saying that we should maintain status quo. So, apart from the leadership tussle in the state, there is this one about candidacy in Edo State.
“At the end of the day, it has nothing to do with the political party but who flies the ticket of the party. Our job is to obey court orders. If tomorrow the court says someone else is the candidate, we will obey. And if there is no resolution before the election, we will go into the election with the PDP and if the party wins, let the court resolve who shall be sworn in,” he said.

The INEC helmsman also lamented the difficulty in conducting credible election in the country and blamed it on the penchant of Nigerian politicians to engage in what he described as “do or die” politics. He then advocated the creation of an electoral offences tribunal to handle cases of electoral malpractices.

“INEC has no police and cannot arrest offenders, we cannot make arrest, we can work with the police and not arrest.

We have to investigate the office so allow successful prosecution. INEC has no power to conduct investigation, it is purely and election management body.
“So what is the way out? Two committees set up by the federal government in 2008 and 2011, made a very important recommendation that the electoral offences tribunal should be established. But nothing has been done about that recommendation till date. In 2011, the government accepted the recommendation and issued a white paper and directed the Attorney General at the time to establish election offences and tribunal commission, but nothing has been done. Are we waiting for another upheaval to set up another committee and to put the recommendation in the cooler?”
Yakubu said the commission at best, is discussing with the National Assembly with a view to seeing to the establishment of the much needed tribunal. “We have been discussing this with the National Assembly because only the assembly can amend the electoral act to establish the commission,” he said.
He confessed that elections in the country have become tougher.

According to him, “Something has happened to our democracy that we have probably not realized, with two strong political parties; competition has become fiercer now. The two political parties in most cases have also fielded strong candidates, making the elections highly competitive. The first election, we conducted was Kogi governorship election. It was a contest between two strong candidates; an incumbent governor versus a former governor.

“Bayelsa governorship election was also a contest between a sitting governor and a former governor. The Rivers election, even though is a constituency election, was ultimately a contest between a former governor and the incumbent governor. Though they are not candidates in the election, they virtually call the shots. So, it has become very competitive and the vote can now count more than before,” he explained.

I think I agree with KPMG on this one. The GDP in Nigeria would have gone up even though we have devaluation. The Naira receipts in d coffers of government has gone up as d price of petrol within Nigeria has gone up from N86.00 to N145.00 so this will in way cushion the impact of d devaluation.

Goods and services has also gone up so is tax recipets from d FIRS. So KPMG can't be too far from d truth.

I seem to disagree with you. The real sector of Nigeria’s economy is still struggling to survive the harsh economic condition owing to the availability/exchange rate of USD to naira.

Remember, it's the real sector of the economy that drives the growth in GDP of China, US, and Japan etc

Business / Nigeria Still Number One Economy In Africa – KPMG by dabiko(m): 8:24am On Aug 19, 2016
The recent updated gross domestic product (GDP) estimates for African countries released by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook (WEO), which put South Africa as the largest economy on the continent has been faulted by KPMG as spurious, saying that the calculations behind the assertion are methodologically incorrect.

The international professional services firm providing audit, tax and advisory services, says the reported US dollar estimates are based on GDP data from the end of 2015 while the exchange rate readings are from August 2016, which makes the calculations spurious.
It was widely reported that South Africa had overtaken Nigeria as Africa’s biggest economy in dollar terms owing to the strengthening of the rand rally and the devaluation of the naira in June 2016.

Calculating the GDP numbers using last year’s IMF figures and this year’s currency exchange numbers shows that South Africa’s economy is worth around $301 billion and Nigeria’s $296 billion, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook (WEO).

However, KPMG is casting doubt on these calculations, saying that it is methodologically incorrect.
“The reported US dollar estimates are based on GDP data from the end of 2015, while the exchange rate readings are from August 2016. The time difference between the two data points makes these calculations spurious at best and not really a reliable indicator of recent developments.”

It noted that in order to reflect the impact of the naira devaluation and the rand’s recovery on comparable GDP estimates, a calculation would need to be made based on GDP data for the second quarter of 2016.
However, Bismark Rewane, foremost economist and Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company Ltd, faulted KPMG’s position, saying that the update was in order.
“I do not agree with KMPG. The value of currency in dollar terms today was what they used. They can’t use the exchange rate of 2015. Remember that our currency has actually depreciated in value. That argument cannot hold water,” he said.

Christie Viljoen, KPMG senior economist, said the 2016Q2 GDP reports from South Africa and Nigeria will reflect stagnant economies.
“From an exchange rate perspective, the naira ended the period notably weaker while the rand was quite stronger.”

He explained in a report that each country’s statistics agency or central bank is tasked with calculating local GDP numbers. The IMF then collects this data and use it in its own database and forecasts, adding that to determine the biggest economy in Africa, each country’s GDP should be calculated in local currency terms.

“This is then divided by the relevant exchange rate to attain a US dollar estimate of each country’s GDP, which is then comparable across countries for a given year.”
South Africa, Nigeria and Egypt will over the coming month release their 2016Q2 GDP reports and then we will have more clarity on this.”

South Africa lost the title as Africa’s largest economy in 2014 after Nigeria rebased its GDP. The country then moved down to third place at the end of 2015 largely due to its weakened currency as Egypt ranked in second position. These rankings however do not mean much for the average person.
“For the man in the street it does not really influence their general wellbeing, income prospects, safety or wealth,” said Viljoen.

“For the country as a whole, it is a positive influence in terms of foreign investment and international standing.”
The ranking is made on the basis of the size of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the countries in question, namely South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria. The GDP is a measure of total economic activity in a country in a specific period (for example a year). GDP is measured in the domestic currency of the country, which is the rand in the case of South Africa, the naira in Nigeria and the Egyptian pound in Egypt’s case.

For purposes of international comparison, the GDP values are converted at the prevailing exchange rate to a common international currency such as the US dollar. Owing to the increase in the exchange rate value of the rand, the US dollar value of the South African GDP increased. Given the change in the value of the country’s currency, its GDP exceeded the value of Nigeria’s GDP. The same applies to Egypt: owing to the increase in the exchange rate of the rand, South Africa’s GDP is now larger than the GDP of Egypt when converted to US dollars. It’s important to remember that South Africa’s actual GDP in rand value stayed the same.

The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook (WEO) released in April 2016 updated gross domestic product (GDP) estimates for more than 200 of the world’s economies. For Africa, the update reflected another shift in the leader board for the continent’s largest economy. After losing its top spot to Nigeria in 2014 following the West African country’s rebasing its GDP, South Africa moved down to third place at the end of 2015 largely due to its weakened currency. Egypt had moved into the second position, based on US dollar calculations of each country’s GDP.

According to Bloomberg, “based on gross domestic product at the end of 2015 published by the International Monetary Fund, the size of South Africa’s economy is $301 billion at the rand’s current exchange rate, while Nigeria’s GDP is $296 billion.”
The change comes as the rand gained over 16 percent against the dollar since the start of the year, while Nigeria’s naira lost over a third of its value following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s removal of the country’s currency peg in June, says the media company.
Since the Nigerian naira was devalued on June 20 this year, there have been sporadic reports suggesting that Nigeria had surrender its crown as Africa’s largest economy due to the impact of a weak naira on the US dollar value of economic activity.
