homesteady: I told you he bosses El classico, and was the MOTM in the last game. Are you trying to tell us that the 2nd best attacking trio in the world didn't put pressure on barcelona defense? You seem to have a very big problem with comprehension..... Why are you handpicking games? Havent we seen defenders from lowly clubs neutralize deadly attackers? we are talking about attacking/ possession footie as barcelona's primary defence mechanism so as to cover up for the deficiencies of Pique & Other useless players in his defensive unit, You dey here dey yarn opata. The Guardian: "We play in the other team's half as much as possible because I get worried when the ball is in my half," he says. "We're a horrible team without the ball so I want us to get it back as soon as possible and I'd rather give away fouls and the ball in their half than ours." The stats bear that out: Dani Alves makes the fourth highest number of touches in the opposition half in La Liga.
Barcelona attack to defend; when they lost to Arsenal, Guardiola was angry with Alves not for attacking too much but for attacking badly. That Barcelona lost because they were caught up the pitch is one reading; Guardiola's reading is that had they scored they would not have been caught on the break.
"Barcelona are the only team that defend with the ball; the only team that rests in possession," Lillo says. "They keep the ball so well, they move so collectively, that when you do get it back, you're tired, out of position and they're right on top of you." Lillo knows: his Almería side were defeated 8-0 by Barcelona.
Michael Laudrup, the Mallorca coach, said: "They move the ball so fast that by the time you get there, it's gone. You end up desperate, and shattered." As Rexach notes, Barcelona even waste time with possession. Most teams would go down to the corner; Barcelona would rather keep the ball between themselves. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2011/mar/06/barcelona-pep-guardiola If the above excerpt cannot help you out, your case is well & truly beyond redemption.... homesteady: He beat Neuer to this award! When will your club keeper win it? or will you also say it was barcelona system that made him to make such a save? How many times have we seen mediocre players come up with moments of brilliance? Havent we seen Carlos Kameni make multiple outstanding saves against Real Madrid & Barcelona? Did those saves upgrade his status You shouldnt have attempted this ridiculous ter stergen debate because trust me, it's really making you look very clueless and ignorant... homesteady: You didn't answer the questions I asked you -

This fooolish question should be redirected to Dayo... homesteady: Igorance! So a big club like barcelona will just wake up one morning and decide to buy any keeper they see to replace Valdez?
Ter stegen was making waves in Bundesliga, I think he conceeded the least goals after Neuer and the 2nd highest clean sheet after saving the club from relegation the previous season! I know EPL clubs don't have a good scouting policy, but it doesn't stop you from checking out good players from other leagues. Ter Stergen is in the same category with goalies like Kasper Schmeichel, Ben Foster etc..... homesteady: Didn't you also watch the last worldcup? Bravo was one of the standout keepers! Don't even enter Bravo's matter, his stats speaks for him, I'm already expecting you to say the system helps him. Another assertion bereft of logic & Common sense.... Mediocre Players like Martins Indi, Sergio Romero (A perpetual benchwarmer at Monaco that season), etc also performed very well at the worldcup. Yeah, it's system that helped them. |

homesteady: And don't you know that it's players like Messi who make his defending job harder by not tracking back? Is attacking the only aspect of a game? No - that means other players play important functions. If a team has the ball & attacks almost 70% in matches, would there be pressure on the defence of such a team?? We say pique is a beneficiary of Barca's tactics...how many times do I have to repeat this obvious point?? This is like the 100th time I have driven home this point in the last 3 hours thereabout!! homesteady: Ermmm.... how many times do I have to say this - He had a good season and even won best save of the tournament! Was it not his UCL form that made people and the press to say he was Neuer's heir? Stop mentioning that Austin Ejide - wannabe in the same sentence with Neuer just to support Pique's inclusion in that list. What's my business with any yeye save?? I can go on YouTube & upload better saves by the likes of Boaz Myhill, pantillimon & co. Ter stergen epitomizes wha a top club shouldn't have between the sticks. homesteady: O really? Why then does your team not play with a high line defense? Who doesn't know that is the most difficult style of defending where you are highly exposed to counter-attacks? Why was the whole world blaming Pep for using a highline against barcelona last UCL season? Chelsea have never implemented the high line + high pressing + possession football that has been synonymous with Barca over the years. If you want to compare Barca's highline tactics to that of chelsea, that's your wahala... homesteady: He became a defensive liability in Man city. He has & will always be a defensive liability - stop bringing up these kinda issues Abeg!! homesteady: Read my post well, I was comparing Hazard situation to Ter Stegen! Which makes it worse... Ter stegen has never been a top goalie or player, neither has he ever been in any impressive form, so the comparison with hazard is null & void!! homesteady: Lmaoooooooooooo! Bravo won copa America with Chile, it shows you don't know what you are talking about By your logic, other useless players in Chile that were fortunate to be part of the team have also become "good" over night. This things wey you dey talk don dey tire me. . homesteady: You would surely make a bad coach! You buy 2 new good keepers, is sharing responsibilities between them the best thing to do? Which yeye two good goalkeepers?? If you are still on the goalie issue just to score ridiculously cheap brownie points for otu pique, you are on your own.. homesteady: there is always ab excuse! SMH It isn't an excuse - it's the absolute truth.. The press was still wanking to the awesome football we saw from Spain, coupled with the fact that they just won the worldcup for the 1st time. The inclusion of casillass (when there were better goalies like VDS & cech), is a testament to this effect!! |

homesteady: Yea... the system! Some of your type even say the system is what makes Messi look good! Bananas & Guava.. Messi makes a difference for barca - his influence on the team is the reason why jerks like pique don't have to defend all the time in the 1st place. Bringing messi into the mix clearly shows that you are outta points!! homesteady: Barcelona played a more direct football last season, and yet Piqué was one of the best defenders in Europe! You want us to take a list that contains Ter-stegen a serious one?? Park well oga. homesteady: Who has been the best defender in EPL for a while now? - Terry. I guess you remember how he fared when he played in a high line defense under AVB, and Piqué the 'mediocre' defender Excells in such a system! In addition to the possession game, barca also play the high line while ensuring that the forwards press high up the pitch. If you want to Compare this Barca side with a Team that soaks up pressure, that's your problem. homesteady: Does a Defensive midfielder need thousands of lessons to play as a defender? You are better than this, trust me.. Yaya Toure who is known to be a defensive liability slotted in at CB effortlessly in a UCL final & was largely untroubled by the likes of tevez, Ronaldo & Rooney, yet you want us to believe it's a normal procedure. homesteady: How old was Piqué when he was in Man U? I know things are bad now for you guys, but it has not always been like that! man u had a great squad then, you don't expect such a young Piqué to break into the team! Besides, it was only pique that couldn't break in, Pogba also! Who said he should break into the 1st team? Pique was at the club when the likes of Anderson & Nani (his age mates) where already on the fringes of 1st team selection. It's also worthy of mention that pique was a man utd player for 4 years (2004-2004). homesteady: Haa! Hazard won PFA player of the year, but he is playing rubbish now, does that mean he has always been playing rubbish? Hazard was taking games by the scruff of the neck for Chelsea - stop comparing his loss of form to someone who has possession soccer to thank for limited defensive duties, hence his supposed "quality"!! homesteady: 2 new keepers were bought at the same time, their duties were shared - Bravo for la liga and Ter Stegen for UCL! Both goalies are equally useless... Which top club alternates goalies that way if it's not that one or both of them are problematic?? Stop trying to defend his inclusion in that list so as to justify pique's presence there - it's ridiculous to say the least!! homesteady: After that save he made from Robben in the final, you still don't expect him to win it? He won it because the Spanish side became "media darlings". Isn't this obvious?? |

homesteady: [s]You should have told me you preferred brutes[/s]! Gerard pique has always been a very mediocre defender. If not for Tiki taka, he would probably be putting on #34 jersey at a club like Tennerife or Sporting Gijon as we speak... homesteady: So because Matic and his teammates are playing badly now, then I can say he was very average and it was his teammates that made him look good? The whole team played badly, thats why they finished the season trophyless. Apples & Oranges... When Chelsea were in form, matic was still pulling his weight in the team. There were games in which he was easily the best player on the pitch - he wasn't hiding behind any high pressing /possession based tactics to show his quality. Pique on the other hand has always thrived in a setup that made Yaya Toure fit in perfectly at CB in a UCL final. However, when the chips were down, the Spaniard showed why he couldn't make the grade at Man utd .. homesteady: I hope you also know he won best save of the tournament? that shows he was very good during last UCL and is only suffering from loss of form now. Ter-stergen?? Good?? The same stergen who had to be rotated with Bravo in a scenario reminiscent of the Howard - Carroll comedy show we had at United in 2003 thereabout?? Best save my left Yansh.. homesteady: Who was? In that period, the aging VDS & Cech were still the best goalies in The world. In 2010, Julio Cesar was arguably the best Goalie in the world (there's no need bringing up the glaring ojoro By FIFA in that particular year). Even at that time, Neuer was becoming a force to reckon with but ofcourse, Spanish players had to dominate every list (wether they merited it or not) |

homesteady: In any criteria you want to use, Piqué is still among the elite defenders! Pique isnt better than Johnny Evans.. homesteady: Though he lost form for a season or two, but it wasn't only him but the whole team! Another testament to the fact that he has been more or less a beneficiary of the "perfect" system... Even when the whole team wasn't playing well, the efforts of the likes of xavi & iniesta were visible for all to see. however, Pique & his comity of equally mediocre players in the defensive unit suffered greatly! homesteady: Last season he was like the best defender in Europe - That's why he made UEFA team of the season! your useless goalie, Marc ter Stegen ( who would even struggle to make the bench at teams like crystal palace and hull), also made the same list. homesteady: Besides he made FIFA world best 11 about 3 times, when the list was still sensible, not now that David luiz is making the list! iker casilass also made those same lists (2010, 2011 & 2012). Was he actually the best goalie in the world in that period? If you have decided to ignore an obvious pattern in those team selections, too bad!! homesteady: He ticks all the boxes of a good defender, except that he doesn't have speed, how many defenders have speed sef? Well, it can happen when one is low in confidence. He has been criticized too often of not hitting the ball first time, so he didn't want to stop it. In the EPL alone, the most creativeplayers are Silva, Mata and Ozil in a distant 3rd. Dadehmola: • Carzola (last season) • James Rodriguez • Isco • Coutihno Ps : they aren't on the same level with silva but they still influence games (to a very considerable extent) for their respective clubs. Mata is becoming an inzaghi-esque #10 - scoring chance goals & providing assists without necessarily pulling his weight as an attacker. chrisley024: Is he actually our no.10 cos you see him more in the box finding spaces than the player playing behind the CF eg. Rooney. Dude creates the most chances in this team and has the most intelligent movement off the ball to find spaces in the box. That's why the two bolded words(creative & influence ) cannot be used interchangeably (at least in this context).. David silva is actually a combination of both - he dictates play for his team majorly because he does wonderful things with the ball even in tight spaces.Though an intelligent player, Mata on the other hand cannot protect the ball, draw fouls from the opponents & delay a key pass till the right moment when marked closely (the basic things I look out for in a #10). |

Caveatemptor: Mata has improved this season. The back heeled flick for Smalling and Uniteds second goal last night was audacious and the sign of a player coming to terms with his role in the team as well as his responsibility. Mata's talent & technique has never been in doubt - some of the breathtaking goals he scored even at Chelsea, allude to this fact. However, as regards this "responsibility" you're talking about, I'm yet to see a dominant performance from mata. Caveatemptor: The fact that Van Gaal has got him taking penalties for the team ahead of Rooney shows that Van Gaal believes and trusts in him. Now if Van Gaal could just grow an extra pair and drop Rooney to the bench and play Mata in his natural role............... You might be correct but let's be sincere with ourselves ...considering the duties & attributes of a natural #10, has mata actually shown that he's ready to take up that role & thrive there?? #timewilltell# |
