Ex- President George W Bush has criticised Donald Trump , saying “this guy doesn ’ t know what it means to be President ” . Mr . Bush went on record along with his father, George HW Bush, to discuss their thoughts on Mr Trump as part of a new book about the pair . “I don ’ t like him . I don ’t know much about him , but I know he ’ s a blowhard . And I ’m not too excited about him being a leader” the senior Bush told historian Mark Updegrove , for his new book The Last Republicans. This is not the first time that the younger Bush has criticised the US president . He reportedly described Donald Trump ’s inauguration speech in March as “some weird s**t .” He also made comments last month expressing his disappointment at the current political climate , in remarks which many deemed to be an attack on Mr Trump . Speaking to the George W Bush Institute , he said : “Bigotry seems emboldened. Our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication. “[ The founders of the Munich conference] would be alarmed by an increasing turn away from universal values and toward old ties of blood and race and sectarianism . ” Neither the 41 st or 43 rd presidents voted for Mr Trump in the election . George HW Bush said he voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while his son told Mr Updegrove he did not vote for anyone . “I voted ‘ None of the Above ’ for president , and Republican down ballot in 2016 , ” he said of choosing not to support Mr Trump . He went on to say it was “ a strange election year ”, while his 93 year - old father said he was skeptical of the President ’ s political motivations , saying he believed he was partly driven by “a certain ego. ” www.punchng.com/trump-doesnt-know-what-it-means-to-be-president-george-bush/ |

Professor Wole Soyinka is going back to Donald
Trump’s America, less than a year after he tore his
Green Card following the election of Donald Trump as
the president. He will be delivering from 14-16 November the Richard D. Cohen Lectures at Harvard University Centre for African Studies. “I’ll go in as an alien, an alien from outer space. I love that designation,” Soyinka said in an interview with Financial Times of London published on Friday. The lectures will be in three parts, under the theme: BEYOND AESTHETICS: Use, Abuse and Dissonance in African Art Traditions The first part, The Acquisitive Eye: “Oga, I swear it’s Original Fake”will be delivered on 14 November. On 15 November, Soyinka will speak on : Heirs to the Procreative Deities – the Yoruba at Large. He ends the talks on Thursday 16 November with the third lecture: From Aso Ebi to N****YWOOD. The venue for the three lectures is Thompson Room, Barker Center, 12 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA. Richard Cohen lectures Before the emergence of Trump, Soyinka had spent much time in the US, where he taught at a number of universities and lived in California with his wife, Folake. “My life has been involved with the diaspora on a very personal and visceral level,” he said of his interaction with prominent African-Americans. Donald Trump’s election marked an end to his US sojourn. In what has become known among Nigerians as “Wolexit”, he cut up his Green Card. “To have some redneck ride into power on the steed of racism was for me too much,” he told the Financial Times. In a statement in 2016, he detailed why he chose to drop the Green Card: ”I was in New York during the run-up to elections. I watched this face, its body language, listened to his uncouth, racist language, his imbecillic harangues, the insults to other peoples, other races, especially the Hispanics, Africans and Afro-Americans, even citing once – I was told – Nigeria as an instance of the burdensome occupation of global space. I watched and listened, disbelievingly, since this was America, supposedly now freed to a large extent – as we like to believe and have a right to expect – from its lamentable history of racism.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/11/soyinka-goes-trumps-america/

Iwo (Osun) – The Bowen University, Iwo, Osun, on Saturday awarded first class degrees to 81 graduating students at its 12th convocation. The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mattews Ojo, stated this while delivering his convocation speech at the university’s premises in Iwo. Ojo said 96 graduating students were awarded with second class upper degrees, 382 with second class lower degrees, while 136 were awarded with third class degrees. He added that 15 were awarded with MBBS Degrees and 29 awarded with Master Degrees. Ojo urged the graduating students to be focused and to be good ambassadors of the university wherever they found themselves. ‘‘Equally important, do not dwell anymore on the grades attained in the courses in the university but focus your attention on the knowledge gained, skills acquired and character that has been moulded. ‘‘No doubt, Bowen University has prepared you for leadership. Indeed, our nations, at this time, needs people like you that will make a positive difference,’’ Ojo said. Earlier, the Chancellor of the university, Dr Olumide Kehinde, urged the new graduates to create new opportunities for themselves through self- employment. Also, the Pro-Chancello of the university, Mr Oluwole Abegunde, urged the new graduates to be focused and be agents of positive change in the society. In his remarks, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, represented by his deputy, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori, urged private universities to engage in research and development, saying these were critical intellectual needs for society’s growth. In his exhortation, the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Baptist Convention, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, urged the new graduates to empower themselves to make them relevant in the country. Meanwhile, the Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Mrs Joan Ayo, said that the Federal Character Principle, if properly implemented, would ensure effective service delivery in the country. Ayo said this while delivering the 12th Convocation Lecture of the university with the theme: “Governance, Service Delivery and Development in Nigeria since Independence.’’ “It is my firm conviction that if properly implemented, the principle will ensure authentic development in Nigeria. “It will douse the numerous agitations that, unfortunately, we are accustomed to. It will remove the cliché of marginalisation, reduce the tension in the country and promote peace,” she said. Ayo, however, debunked insinuations that the Federal Character Principle sacrifices meritocracy for mediocrity in order to accommodate everybody in the country. ‘‘In practice, Federal Character Principle ensures picking out the best from each Local Government or Senatorial District or Zone, as applicable.’’ she said.
