Manchester United have signed England centre-back Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £80m - a world record fee for a defender. The 26-year-old has agreed a six-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year. The fee for Maguire eclipses the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018. "When Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity," said Maguire. He becomes United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's third summer signing, after right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka arrived from Crystal Palace for £50m and winger Daniel James joined from Swansea for £15m. Maguire added: "From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. "It's clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started." Solskjaer said: "Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today. "He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure. "He will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch." www-bbc-com/sport/football/49224905?iorg_service_id_internal=624173547714020">https://https-www-bbc-com/sport/football/49224905?iorg_service_id_internal=624173547714020%3BAfrubPi9GYpad-aX

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the results of last Saturday, March 9, gubernatorial election held in Kano state as inconclusive. Daily Trust reports that the INEC’s returning officer in the state, Bello Shehu, disclosed this on Monday night, March 11, at the commission's head office in the state. Legit.ng gathered that he said that Abba Kabir Yusuf of the PDP polled 1,014,474 votes just as the incumbent state governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje got 987,819 votes. He added that the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) came third and polled 104,009 votes. Announcing the results, Shehu said while the PDP candidate polled 1,014,474 votes, Ganduje of the APC scored 987,819 votes leaving a difference of 26,655 votes. He also said the total number of votes cancelled across 22 local government areas including Gama ward of Nasarawa local government is 141,694 votes. The returning officer said based on the provisions of the law, he has to declare the election inconclusive because the number of cancelled votes is much higher than the difference between the two major candidates. Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Murtala Sule Garo, the commissioner for local government of Kano and Lamin Sani the chairman of Nasarawa local government of the state were arrested by the police for allegedly trying to steal the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)'s result sheets. DSP Haruna Abdullahi, the police spokesman in the state revealed that Garo and Sani were nabbed at the area's collation centre for the governorship and state Assembly polls as they reportedly tried to make away with the results sheets, adding that they also made moves to destroy the document He had said: “While his Excellency the Deputy Governor of Kano State Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna was rescued from the scene, who was on an inspection.” https://www.legit.ng/1226884-breaking-inec-declares-kano-governorship-election-inconclusive.html |

A former member of the House of Representatives candidate in Delta state has conddnemned the recent directive given by President Buhari on snatching of ballot boxes - Kennedy Eyube said such directives could lead to war or anarchy in Nigeria - According to Eyube, it is undemocratic for a president of a country to order the military to kill the people he swore to defend A chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kennedy Eyube, has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari's directive to security agencies over the snatching of ballot boxes. Eyube, a former member of the House of Representatives candidate for Okpe Sapele Uvwie Federal Constituency under the All Progress Congress (APC) said, the order to shoot at ballot box snatchers is an invitation to anarchy. The Nation reports that Eyube while addressing journalists in Warri warned that the president's order may also lead to war in Nigeria. He said Nigeria has laws stipulated in the Constitution to deal with electoral offenders as he pondered why a president of a country should order the military to kill the people he swore to defend. Describing the directive as a disgrace to the nation's democracy, Eyube called on President Buhari to withdraw the order while urging security personnel to ignore such directive in the interest of democracy. “Nigerians are tired of Buhari Government because there is too much killings. He knows they will not vote for him. That is reason for all these. If not how can a president want to kill his own people?” Eyube queried. “During the PDP administration a bag of rice was N8,000 and a litre of fuel was N87 naira. But today, under the APC government a bag of rice is about N25,000 and a litre of fuel is N145 naira. So Nigerians are tired of the APC government. They want to change the change by 23 March 2019 by voting out the APC,” Eyube said. Commending the Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on infrastructural development in the state, Eyube said the governor has turned the state into a ‘Construction Site,’. “If you are going to Asaba from Ughelli you will see the massive works going on. So I don’t see any other candidate other than Okowa. “For this reason and other reasons Okpe Local Government is 100% in support PDP and the people are going to give Governor Okowa and PDP 5/5 in the forthcoming general elections," he said. Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the federal government has declared Friday, February 22 as public to enable Nigerians prepare for the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, February 23. A community leader, Chief Martin Opara, who confirmed the incident, said the killing had caused panic in the state. He urged security agencies to apprehend the killers of the APC chieftain without any delay, noting that the community had never witnessed such political killing “This killing is strange to our community. Just like in 2015, history repeats itself today as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Saturday, February 16, 2019 general elections few hours to its commencement. In 2015, INEC under the leadership of Attahiru Jega postponed the Presidential and National Assembly from February 14, 2015 to March 28th, 2015. Jega blamed the unrest in north-east Nigeria caused by Boko Haram attacks as well as INEC's concern for the security of its ad hoc staff as some of the reasons for the postponement. In 2019, INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who blamed logistic issues for the shift in the election dates announced that the elections would now hold on February 23 and March 9. President Muhammadu Buhari, who left his hometown, Daura, for Abuja this morning, said he was disappointed in INEC for postponing the 2019 election, but urged the commission to ensure that materials already distributed for the poll are safe. However, in 2015, Buhari was more vocal with his criticism of the INEC after the election was postponed. Buhari who ran on the platform of the APC in 2015 accused INEC of being compromised by the then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Below, read Buhari's statement after INEC postponed the 2015 election: "It took INEC one month to work out…I see no reason why we should postpone it. “There are 14 local governments where there is (security) problem; 10 in Borno, two in Your, two in Adamawa. And there and 774 local governments in Nigeria. Should we postpone the election because of 14 local governments? “Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria were fighting wars and they conducted elections, what is Boko Haram? “I wish to appeal for utmost restraint and calm by all Nigerians, especially the teeming supporters of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). “It is important to note that although INEC acted within its constitutional powers, it is clear that it has been boxed into a situation where it has had to bow to pressure. Thus, the independence of INEC has been gravely compromised.” Meanwhile, the PDP Presidetial candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the postponement of the 2019 general elections. Atiku alleged that the postponement of the general election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is “obviously a case of the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob.” Atiku blamed the postponement of the elections on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, saying the government had "more than enough time and money to prepare". https://www.legit.ng/1222317-flashback-how-buhari-reacted-inec-postponed-2015-election.html |

Ahead of the 2019 presidential election, a faction of Miyetti Allah group in the northeast region has reportedly dissociated itself from the endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari by the national body. This was disclosed in Yola on Sunday, February 3 by Mafindi Umaru Danburam, leader of the group who recently resigned his position as the northeast chairman of the group following the national body’s endorsement of Buhari. Consequently, the group endorsed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), candidature of Atiku Abubakar, Sahara Reporters reports. He said: "Miyetti Allah had, at no time, sat to decide which presidential candidate to support. "I resigned my office as northeast leader of Miyetti Allah since news broke about the purported endorsement of President Buhari by our national body. So we're here to tell the world that if someone is priding himself as a Fulani man, Atiku is more, because he occupies the revered stool of the second in command at Adamawa emirate as the Waziri. "If someone prides himself as a Fulani herder, Atiku is more, because he owns more than 1,000 heads of cattle, compared to 150.” Mohammed Ango, a chieftain of the group, who also spoke at the event said the Fulani people have lost their dignity in the admistarion of President Muhammadu Buhari. "Fulani people have lost more dignity under the Buhari administration than any other in history. "Today, our people are branded as killers, branded as kidnappers or robbers, just because some people are misrepresenting us. Before now, the relationship between herders and farmers was not this bad; we can all attest to this. Our people, for instance, could pass the night in the house of say, a Bachama man in Numan, but now all that has been eroded." Also speaking at the event was Ahmed Umar Fintiri, Adamawa governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received the group on behalf of Atiku. He thanked the group for clearing the air ad stressed that only the PDP government, led by Atiku, can reunite Nigeria. Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Alhaji Aliyu Idris-Ibrahim, council chairman, Zaria local government of Kaduna state on Sunday, February 3, said re-electing President Muhammadu Buhari would guarantee brighter future for Nigeria. Idris-Ibrahim made the observation during the presentation of certificates to contractors awarded infrastructure projects in Tudun Wada ward of Zaria. https://www.legit.ng/1219578-breaking-miyetti-allah-faction-disowns-president-buhari-endorses-atiku.html |

The senator was said to be in Osinbajo's entourage when the incident happened. One of the youths, who craved anonymity, said: “He (senator) was beaten because he neglected us in the senatorial district; he carried out no constituency projects for the over three years we have elected him. “He does not have any constituency office in this town; he was not accessible, we couldn’t reach him for over three years; so what does he want here? Election is coming now, so he wants to cajole us again, that will not be possible.” Another lawmaker, a member of the House of Representatives representing Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency, Bamidele Baderinwa, was allegedly beaten by irate youths in his constituency on Wednesday, January 31. - The federal govt has been criticised by labour leaders for the planned increase of the fee to secure the new e-passport - The United Labour Congress stated that it was insensitive to increase the price of travel documents at a time Nigerians were contending with economic challenges - On its part, the TUC also said that it was insensitive on the part of the NIS to hike passport fees at this point in time - The union pointed out that the fee hike would affect many Nigerians who use their travelling passports for transactions Labour leaders have criticised the federal government for the planned increase of the fee to be paid by Nigerians to secure travel document. The labour leaders told NAN on Wednesday, January 30, in Lagos that many workers would not be able to travel abroad unless the fee is reviewed downwards. Legit.ng gathers that the deputy general secretary of the United Labour Congress, Chris Onyeka, stated that it was insensitive to increase the price of travel documents at a time Nigerians were contending with economic challenges. He said: "Government finds it difficult to pay N30,000 to workers, but it is easy to increase the cost of getting a passport from N22,000 to N70,000. “The fact that the NIS has extended the number of years from five to 10 years is not a good reason to triple the cost of the passport.’’ Onyeka pleaded with the NIS to reduce the price to N40,000 or N50,000 to enable the populace to afford the document. “It will be difficult for Nigerians to travel on the new price and this development will hamper their fundamental human rights," he said. President of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Product Employees, Olagoke Olatunji, also condemned the new fee, appealing for a downward review. Olatunji noted that it would take a worker on the current N18, 000 minimum wage up to four months’ salary to be able to acquire a passport with the new price. Similarly, the TUC in a statement said that it was insensitive on the part of the NIS to hike passport fees at this point in time. The statement read in part: "The congress condemns in its entirety what the NIS has proposed and we may adopt any measure we consider right to ensure that the new international passport does not exceed N50, 000.” The TUC president, Bobboi Kaigama, and the secretary of the body, Musa Lawal-Ozigi, in the statement, said that if allowed to scale through, civil servants would save their salaries for three months with the new minimum wage to be able to pay for a passport. They said: "What about feeding, rent, school fees and other utilities? This will not work. We appeal to the NIS to look into the matter.” The TUC said that the fee hike would also affect many Nigerians, who had been using their travelling passports for transactions. Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigeria Immigration Service said it will unveil the new passport, a 64-page booklet with 10-year validity, on Monday, March 4. The passport will go for the sum of N70,000 and has over 20 features, while the other one with a five-year validity will be going for N35,000. https://www.legit.ng/1218904-labour-lambastes-fg-high-cost-passport.html |

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned strike action following an agreement reached with the federal government. TheCable reports that Ayuba Wabba who is the president of the NLC spoke after the tripartite committee meeting held on Monday, November 6. It was reported that after the long hours of meeting, an agreement was reached followed by signing of documents. Wabba said: “Having reached this position and agreements signed, the proposed strike action is hereby suspended.” Vanguard reports that Ama People who is the chairperson of the committee said the government has suggested N24, 000 minimum wage but the NLC insisted on N30,000. She said: “We have concluded and we have a little challenge with what we call Chapter 5 of our report, that is where we have the numbers and the figures we used for the negotiations and the figures that we concluded with and the committee has two figures: the N24, 000 suggested by the federal government and the N30, 000 given by the organized labour. “There is no stalemate. We have finished and we have signed it but we are insisting that the strike must be called off. There are still two figures, N24, 000 and N34, 000. You know that labour came up with a figure of N66, 500 but when we put all that together with the figure we got from the states…so, we put all that in a basket plus the initial figure that the federal government recommended which was N20, 700. We put them together in a basket and came up with four scenarios, we worked with one of the scenarios and that was how we agreed on that N24, 000 and N30, 000 respectively”, The minister for labour, Chris Ngige on his part said the committee was working to securing an appointment with President Muhammadu Buhari. He said: “We are making progress. The governors’ figure should be the figure of the federal government. We are just trying to carry them along. That is why we made the discussions ‘tripartite plus’. It is just because we want to carry them along, otherwise the federal government speaks for governments. Yes, the figures are standing but we know that there are other processes. It has to go through the Federal Executive Council, the National Executive Council and the National Council of State, then an Executive Bill will be transmitted to the National Assembly”. Legit.ng had reported that the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a rights group, on Monday, November 5, urged the organised labour to shelve its proposed nationwide strike as it would be detrimental to the masses. https://www.legit.ng/1202209-breaking-nlc-suspends-planned-nationwide-strike.html |

He said: “What we need in Nigeria is the person that can protect you, protect lives and property of individuals and we should keep on changing leaders, we should keep on changing them until we get the best. Buhari is bad, all of you should decide and tell him to go. Let us try Atiku if he doesn’t perform, we will send him out too. “Buhari is the worst we can get, Obasanjo has told us that, Obasanjo doesn’t like Atiku but he said he is better than Buhari so let us make progress. We must all resolve to work together to become Nigerians whenever we found ourselves in the world, we should be protected by our country. “My message is that Buhari must go. He just must go, if Atiku comes and performs to our expectations, he can continue but if he doesn’t perform to our expectation, he will go too. We should all put our hands together, strengthening ourselves to develop this country.” He said he might tender a public apology on BBC and CNN for asking Nigerians to vote for Buhari, regretting that the president has failed in meeting people’s expectations. “If there is any person that helped promote him (Buhari) from January 2002 till date, I can hardly be number two if I am not number one. Killing is everywhere and you don’t take a damn. People are being killed, communities are being wiped out, and disasters are happening, he doesn’t give a damn for two and a half years, what kind of leader is that? So, the man is bad, it is not because he is Hausa or Fulani man because the man is bad, Muhammadu Buhari is bad. “So, he should go and rest why am saying so is that there are lots of Hausa and Fulani people that are being killed or maybe sleeping with hunger, so these hunger, poverty, killings there is no known bound. Let him go and rest.” Earlier, the director-general of the association, Barrister Ihechi, Ike said the painful part of the history was that same greedy, wicked and selfish persons have hijacked the Nigerian state making wealth for themselves by dividing the ever trusting masses on tribal, ethnic, and religious lines. Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that an All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain in Niger, Mohammed Santuraki, called for vigilance to ensure that the party emerged victorious in the 2019 general elections. Santuraki, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Suleja on Saturday, October 13, said APC needed to put its house in order to achieve this. He said that the various disputes that came up in the course of the party’s primaries must be quickly resolved for unity. https://www.naija.ng/1198101-let-atiku-doesnt-perform-send-reformed-apc-chairman.html |
Unconfirmed reports reaching NAIJ.com indicates that Ogun state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for Accord Party. The news was announced on Twitter by a handle (@ogun_state) citing the state owned Ogun state television as its source. NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Governor Amosun recently threatened to defect from the APC if the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party fails to uphold the candidacy of his preferred governorship candidate, Abdul-Kabir Adekunle Akinlade. The governor reportedly issued the threat during a meeting with some party leaders and his loyalists across the 20 local government areas of the state, held at his private residence located inside Ibara GRA, Abeokuta. The governor who briefed his loyalists on the outcome of his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the national leadership of APC, did not mention the name of any party he considers defecting to. But sources say the governor has now decided to pitch his tent with the Accord Party. Already, social media is buzzing with the news of the governor's defection. NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Ogun state chapter of the APC recently urged President Muhammadu Buhari to caution the party’s national chairman Adam Oshiomhole over what it described as an alleged plan to impose a particular candidate ahead of the state’s governorship primary. The secretary to the state government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, during a live broadcast accused the national headquarters of APC of acting out a script all in its determination forcefully to impose a candidate in the Ogun chapter. https://www.naija.ng/1197885-governor-amosun-reportedly-dumps-apc-accord-party.html |

- The Nigerian Bar Association says the Osun rerun poll fell far short of a free and fair election. - The association details instances of how the police allegedly in collusion with thugs selectively prevented voters from accessing polling units - The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) calls for government institutions who allegedly participated in reported fraud during the Osun rerun election to be investigated The Nigerian Bar Association has accused the Nigeria police force of compromising the Osun state governorship rerun election which held on September 27. The legal association in a report by its ad hoc committee on the rerun, said the actions and inaction of the police during the poll showed that it had been compromised. The report said the rerun fell far short of a free and fair election compared to what transpired in the election of September 22. The NBA in the report published on Sunday, September 30, on its website accused the police of failing to question the activities of some political thugs who invaded the Orolu area where part of the supplementary poll took place. The association in the report also cited other instances of how the police allegedly in collusion with thugs, selectively prevented voters from accessing some polling units. Detailing what happened in Orolu, the NBA said: “The team deployed to observe the rerun election at Orolu, Ward 8, polling units 1 and 4 and ward 9, polling unit 3, set out for the assignment at about 6:30am. The team’s enthusiasm was dampened by their harassment and subsequent arrest by mobile policemen en-route Orolu. "They were taken before Ali Janga, Commissioner of Police, at a Police Post. CP Ali Janga is in charge of Kogi State Police Command. Incidentally, the Secretary of the NBA ad-hoc EWG, Liman Salihu Esq. the immediate past chairman of the NBA Lokoja Branch, Kogi State, recognized the CP and showed his Identification Card to him but surprisingly the CP ordered that the team be taken to the INEC Office. At the INEC office, it took one of our own, Festus Okoye Esq. who is currently the INEC Commissioner representing South-East Geopolitical Zone, to secure their release; he also facilitated the team’s movement to Orolu. "The road to Orolu is barely motorable and appears to have been recently graded for the purpose of the election. The location of the polling unit at Ifon Orolu Kajola was in a farm house inside a thick bush and there was only one unoccupied residence with a distance of about 80meters from the said polling unit. The materials for the election arrived on time at the respective units and voting proper commenced at the stipulated time of 8:00am. "There was heavy security presence with about thirty (30) armed Police officials at Orolu. At about 10:00am, while figuring out how to get to Idiya Polling Unit in Orolu, four (4) Toyota Hiace buses packed with about fifty (50) fierce looking men, drove in and the men alighted and walked towards the polling unit without any PVC in their hands. In spite of the heavy security presence of the Nigerian Police, these men were not stopped nor asked if they were going to vote neither were they asked for their PVCs. This however aroused our suspicion. "A member of the NBA Ad-hoc EWG who attempted a recording of the happenings (a few seconds was recorded though) was almost attacked by about six (6) of these men. Surprisingly the Police officials stood aloof and did nothing to stop the invasion by this group of men. The reason given by the security men (Police officials) for their inaction was that they could not act without formal complaints from us. "Another observation at Orolu was that most of the voters had identification bands on their left arms and ring bands on their thumbs. Those with the said identification bands were allowed access into Orolu while those without the bands were not allowed access and so could not vote. Although these voters without the bands displayed their PVCs to the Police men on ground as evidence that they had been registered to vote at that particular polling unit, the Police personnel adamantly turned them back and as such they could not exercise their right to vote. Voters that were allowed to vote without the bands were those who had arrived earlier before the commencement of voting. Similarly, one of Nigeria’s most respected election monitoring groups in the country, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), has said the Thursday, September 27, re-run election in Osun state was neither free, fair nor credible. The group in a statement shortly after the poll also called for government institutions who participated in alleged fraud during the election to be investigated, Premium Times reports. The CDD insisted that the poll fell short of the global best practices in democratic elections which Nigerians desire. https://www.naija.ng/1195707-nba-accuses-nigeria-police-force-compromising-osun-rerun-election.html |
TELEGRAM - Reactions continue to trail the just concluded Osun governorship election. - Former APC chieftain, Comrade Timi Frank, has described the exercise as a sham - He urged the people of Osun to rise up and reclaim their mandate Former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has described the declaration of the APC as the winner of the Osun state governorship election as a sham which cannot stand. In a statement sent to NAIJ.com on Friday, September 28, Comrade Frank stated that the results from the rerun exercise stands rejected and urged the people of Osun to rise up and reclaim their mandate. He stated that true to his earlier alarm that the APC is out to brazenly rig the elections notwithstanding the presence of the media, local and international observers, the ruling party's candidate was still declared winner of the exercise. Frank lamented that there was massive violation of existing electoral guidelines through intimidation, harassment and attacks against peaceful voters, as witnessed and confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on its verified twitter handle @inecnigeria. He called on the chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and all national commissioners of the electoral body, to immediately resign their appointment adding that, “Nigerians and the international community have lost confidence in their ability and willingness to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2019." Frank said: “We saw it in Ekiti state. We have seen it in Osun state. Democracy in Nigeria has been hijacked by demagogues. The open electoral robbery in Osun is a clarion call to all Nigerians to rise up and defend democracy in the country beginning with the demand for the urgent restoration of the mandate of the Osun people freely given to the PDP on September 22. “We must rise up to ensure that the ebbing embers of democratic governance in Nigeria, occasioned by APC’s continuous electoral banditry is not completely snuffed out.” While calling on the Osun people to fight to reclaim their mandate, Comrade Frank added: “It remains to be seen if the great people of Osun will sit by and watch as the governorship mandate they freely gave to Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on September 22 is stolen and allowed to go for good! “This is the time for Osun people to rise up and demand for their right. This is the time for the great descendants of Oduduwa to rise up and demand for the restoration of their mandate. This is the time for all PDP governors and national leaders to band together and fight for the sustenance of democracy in the country. “Let them realize that the Osun APC’s banditry is a foretaste of the indecent and criminal path the ruling party is prepared to toe to hang onto power in 2019." Meanwhile, one of Nigeria’s most respected election monitoring groups in the country, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), has said the Thursday, September 27, re-run election in Osun state was neither free, fair nor credible. The group in a statement shortly after the poll also called for government institutions who participated in alleged fraud during the election to be investigated.
