PoliticsRe: The Gang-up Against Emeagwali Is Ethnically Motivated by DapoBear(m): 8:38am On Nov 11, 2010
Chuks84:
Tinubu and his likes are crooks who are harming the nation from within. I would be the first to denounce all our eastern leaders. But for christ sakes this man is a nigerian in diaspora, his accuses was another nigerian in diaspora. We might kill ourselves with tribal sentiments within the country but i expects us to have eachother's backs outside our shores. Nigeria already has a battered reputation with the international community, emegweali was a beacon of light in the overwhelming darkness, one of the few people who have nigerians hope that we could aspire to be something better than 419 crooks. What the prof toyin and SR hope to achieve by ipublishing such an article?
Chuks. I was sitting in an introductory computer engineering class once, when the professor basically referred to Nigerians all as yahoozes. I cannot cover up for any Nigerians who are making us look bad, talk less of a Nigerian in America! At least the ones in Nigeria are out of sight; any of the evils done in Nigeria are not going to be directly embarrassing me here in America. But a crook like Emeagwali? Imagine if our Nigerian Student Association had invited him to give a talk at this university. Think of the shame associated with us inviting a 419er to speak! Look, if you are sitting in Nigeria, a Nigerian crook in Kazakhstan doesn't directly really affect you.

But PE is not only considered a Nigerian 419er, he is considered a Nigerian-American 419er. So he is directly hurting the reputation of us here in America too. If I settle here and end up living here long-term, do I really want my own kids to have to hear their own professors say to them that Nigerians are fraudsters? We have to stamp this sh!!t out ASAP. It is embarrassing and dangerous.

Chuks, you aren't be fair. Which of us defend or cover up for Yoruba criminals? Tinubu, much as I like what he did in Lagos is imo clearly a crook. Name a Yorubaman who we have covered for and not denounced.
PoliticsRe: Everything About Tinubu Is Fake-oyinlola by DapoBear(m): 8:11am On Nov 11, 2010
So Yoruba from Ogun or wherever else could legitimately run for office in Lagos? Even governor?

I always got the impression that this doesn't really happen in Nigeria, you have to be a native of the state to run for office and be competitive. . .
PoliticsRe: Everything About Tinubu Is Fake-oyinlola by DapoBear(m): 7:57am On Nov 11, 2010
dappssee:
I'm not sure Tinubu has really ever denied not being from Lagos. Fashola and Afikuyomi are not originally from Lagos as well
Really? Wikipedia isn't the final word, but:
Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) is a descendant of the patriarch of the Fashola family, Alfa Bello Fashola of Princess Street in Isale Gangan, Lagos.
Where is he from? I didn't realize you could hold political office in Lagos w/o being original Lagosian. That is a sign of progress, at least.
PoliticsRe: Fec Approves Six New Varsities ! by DapoBear(m): 7:00am On Nov 11, 2010
Can someone concisely explain the differences between the Nigerian university education system and the American ones? The federal varsities I assume are federally funded? How much do they cost, in terms of tuition fees? What is the quality of the federal univerisites versus the state and private ones?

Finally, why not deal with education simply by encouraging private universities, as is done here in the West? That is the fastest way to rapidly increase the amount of students educated, while not straining the resources of the gov't too much.
PoliticsRe: Did Oduduwa Fall From The Sky As In Falling From The Sky? by DapoBear(m): 6:55am On Nov 11, 2010
I'm glad you've acknowledged the superiority of the Yoruba. You have spoken truly; we are descended from heaven. And not surprisingly, God seems to favor us quite a bit.
PoliticsRe: Diya And Adisa, 2 Yoruba Generals Called A Major Master And Bowed For Him by DapoBear(m): 6:46am On Nov 11, 2010
Err, the military at the time was primarily Hausa owned? If so, then of what importance is the title? Title doesn't signify rank necessarily in (what are effectively) ethnic armies. Or even in Africa period. Isn't Ghadaffi technically a colonel or something?

Emeagwali IS a Professor
Once you profess, you are a professor!

Get a life. get your life. Achieve something, stop throwing stones at your own feet.

pro·fes·sor
   /prəˈfɛsər/ Show Spelled[pruh-fes-er] Show IPA
–noun
1.
a teacher of the highest academic rank in a college or university, who has been awarded the title Professor in a particular branch of learning; a full professor: a professor of spanish literature.
2.
any teacher who has the rank of professor, associate professor, or assistant professor.
3.
a teacher.
4.
an instructor in some art or skilled sport: a professor of singing; a professor of boxing.
5.
a person who professes his or her sentiments, beliefs, etc.
If you are using a dictionary definition, then everyone is a professor. Since almost everyone on earth qualifies under definition #5.

Clearly, we are not using such a loose definition.

What's all this wooly talk of hard sciences and soft sciences? undecided.
In the first place by writing brilliant research papers in maths or physics then you are already an expert.
Agreed.

However it is very unlikely that, if not impossible,  an amateur, so to say, would be able to write brilliant research papers in maths and physics in the first place, especially in  these highly specialised times.
Agreed.

He certainly won't be able to do anything original by just dabbling over a 20 year period. And no it has nothing to do with being smarter than his peers. In fact it is the grinding hard work, commitment and dedication that makes the best physicists stand out not just mere smartness.
Indeed.

Those caveats notwithstanding there is nothing stopping a man for applying for and being granted teaching and research positions in academia if he is indeed able to author such brilliant research papers.
False. You'd need an advanced degree. If you disagree, cite a counterexample.

PoliticsRe: Why Did It Take People A Long Time To Figure Out That Emeagwali Was A Fraud by DapoBear(m): 4:39am On Nov 11, 2010
It is indeed quite rare for a relatively young scientist to spend so much time in self-promotion and less time actually working in his field, doing research. One generally does not rest on the laurels of things you accomplished in your youth; he is supposed to still be a productive scientist.

Still, my natural inclination is to accept what people say as the truth. And who cannot love a Nigerian success story? Look how quickly Bill Clinton, Al Gore, etc latched onto it. It is just a feel-good story from all sides, makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Alas. . .
PoliticsRe: 2011: Never Field Women As Candidates, Group Warns by DapoBear(m): 4:35am On Nov 11, 2010
I don't like seeing Yoruba names associated with backwards and primitive ideas like this. Yoruba Muslims, you guys need to step it up. Cannot have one foot in the 18th century and another foot in the current one. There are many countries which do not practice backwards Islam. Follow their example, not that of people trapped in the past.

violent:
I need some kind of education here

what exactly are these remittance figures? is it money given to us free or one that we borrowed?
I'm not sure how they distinguish between the two? I think all they do is look at the amount of cash flowing from outside Nigeria into it (through Western Union or the equivalents.)

BTW, just so you guys can understand how significant this figure is, assuming that the Wikipedia figure of 173 billion is accurate for the GDP of Nigeria, we are talking of approximately 5.5% of the GDP.

This is a nice chunk of change being infused into the economy from outside.

It is even to the modesty of Emeagwali that he did not come home and obtain a PhD, earned or honorary. Many Nigerian universities especially those in Yorubaland who love paper certificate like mad would have been pleased to bestow him  a PhD or honorary doctorate for free. Little wonder everybody in Yorubaland is a prof including unborn children, cats and dogs.
shocked

Are you OK? University of Michigan Masters, time spent in the PhD proram, only to get a PhD from Nigeria, legitimate or fake? Don't you realize how BAD that looks on the resume? You don't want to drop even from University of Michigan to Michigan State on your resume, not to talk of Nigerian PhD!

That you act that he refrained from doing it was an act of temperance shows that you don't understand what is going on. The guy is trying to present himself as a legitimate scientist, not a fraud. Which legitimate scientists drop out of good schools in America to finish their degrees in Nigeria?

Genius10:
You know why? Because in Emeagwali's effort to market himself, he did not give all the glory to Igbos. He claimed he was "Yoruba" by birth, "Igbo" by ancestry, "American" by whatever. This severely angered the Igbo bigots and they started a campaign to expose him. It just so happened that he was actually a fraud, and the movement caught on.

Now go to bed, little boy.

Where did you get that 10 mil figure from? What is the true population of the northern states, anyway? I would not be surprised if Nigeria has 20 million less people than is claimed. Or are they inflating the north and under-counting the south, while keeping the total accurate?

Eventhough I don't support what majority of yorubas are doing to PE,
My guess is that it is normal, what I find abnormal is the silly and naïve reaction of ibos to it.

I have often warned that the naivety of ibos will keep them in the political wilderness of Nigeria for the next 50 years .
shocked shocked shocked

How did you manage to sneak this in? Do you not know what the word "majority" means?

Anyway, maybe PE should sue Yorubaman for racial discrimination, like he sued the University of Michigan

Man. Googling this guys name though, it is starting to become clear he has made a ton of money on his lecture circuit. He is a very sharp 419er.

I should do him one better, move back to Nigeria and claim to be Oduduwa reborn. And no doubt my Biafrans will defend me against accusations of fraud  grin  grin

Marijuana? California grows a sh!ton of marijuana, yet has the best public universities in the nation. Heck, medical marijuana is legal here. . .

In any case, who can fault them for growing it? Certainly a more profitable crop than pounded yam. Get that money!
