I've battled this temptation for so long. Seeing those big android screens on other accords is really tempting. But what good is a big screen that plays like a loud android tablet? A sound system that doesn't produce good sound, is that one even a sound system.
Let them keep their android system let me keep my stock sound system (and my money).

I'm trying to get fuel consumption down on my Nigerian used 05 accord. Fans came connected directly and my first course of action was to rectify that. Turns out whoever made that modification didn't bend the leg of the fan relay. After returning it to factory, the ecu doesn't send the required 12 volts to turn on the fans when the temperature rises. I traced the wiring harness from the fusebox to the ECU and there's no break in the wire that handles that function.

Took it to a rewire, he tried turning on the fans with his scan tool. Scan shows on but no response from the fans. His recommendation is an ECU replacement.

I'm considering installing a fan switch on the radiator to control the fan relay as changing ECU will be expensive and might possibly come with immobiliser and key problems. Your knowledge and experience will be appreciated. Thanks

Fans are good, fuses are good, relays are good. Scanned it and didn't get any cooling system related codes.

I removed the direct connection and allowed it warm up to 98°c and no signal from ecu to turn on the fans

Glad you were very observant of your temperature gauge.

I don't know how tech savvy you are with vehicle components, but I'll advise you engage a professional with it if this is your first time, since you'll be installing a thermostat. One wrong move could cost dearly.

Maybe the elders in the house could guide you through.

See, to be frank with you. Installing your thermostat is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than running your cooling fans via the brainbox/with switches.

Why? Let's see the advantages & disadvantages of each below

1. Using a thermostat would ensure your vehicle's temperature rises to its optimal range QUICKLY (this would make you not waste fuel from a cold start until when your vehicle's engine gets into a closed loop). Without a thermostat you can waste as little as 3 liters to as much as 5 litres just for your vehicle to get into this closed loop situation, and if you don't drive far (10 miles and above) you will never force your engine into a closed loop state. This means you will always be wasting fuel everytime you drive.

2. Using a thermostat would ensure that your engine oil gets to its optimal flow rate on time. When your vehicle is cold your engine oil is naturally thicker than when it's hot. And when you drive with a cold engine (with a thicker engine oil) you will gradually be degrading your engine cylinder walls and this will soon lead to a smokey engine. I am sure you wouldn't want your engine to START SMOKING even with diligent and timely oil changes right?

2. Using the thermostat would make your vehicles RPM stabilise at its normal range (650 rpm-750 rpm) early and make your engine run quietly as intended from factory. If you drive without a thermostat it's usual for your rpms to be as high as 900 -1,000 rpm everytime you drive and this makes your engine loud plus wastes fuel unnecessarily.

Now about running your fans either directly or via switches/brainbox:

The ONLY advantage or disadvantage with this option is that your cooling fan motors will last longer with it coming on and off automatically instead of running all the time once you turn your ignition key. Plus your battery will last longer too as the stress of the fans motor won't always be on it.

Now as you can see from my examples above it is even far better to run your fans directly SO FAR AS YOU HAVE YOUR THERMOSTAT INSTALLED IN THE ENGINE than to run it via the automatic route without any thermostat because before your fans come on it will take a far longer time and you will be burning excessive fuel 80% of the time while you drive.

I hope you understand what I just posted.

Hello, I just got my first car. A honda accord 2005 with 4cyl engine.

I noticed my temperature guage going into the red and pulled over, turns out both fans weren't running at all.

Checked all the fuses and noticed the AC fuse in the under dash fusebox was burnt. Fixed it and both fans came back to life.

After doing all my checks, turns out a kazeem had connected both the AC condenser fan and engine cooler fan to the AC blower relay.

I'm looking to return it back to factory spec, but not sure how to proceed with it. The relays for both fans are okay, and the fan fuses are also okay.

The car doesn't have Catalyst,so the exhaust facing engine is wide open and free air and breeze dey blow put,sending wrong signal to the brainbox,telling injectors to spray more fuel,that the engine is cold,meanwhile the engine is mad hot,open loop..i was once in this dilemma till I installed catalysts. Before without catslyst 10 litres will take me almost 18km,after catalyst,10 litres took me almost 40km at moderate speed,good spark plugs and no exhaust leak. Now imagine what full tank will do.

This is exactly the fuel consumption on my honda accord 2005 and I thought it was gulping fuel

Omor, that road na my defense that year. I'm always stay in school long after school gen goes off by 10. Once I see any shady looking person, I don cross road. I fit cross road 5 times between school gate and emir junction.
