That verse is clear and sound, the only way you would not perish is just to believe in him, attempting to win your salvation by reading the bible to look out for what is a sin and what is not is a futile effort and will only make the devil laugh at yo a'rse cos you can't win!

It's politics,since the people will not be the ones to first nominate the party's flagbearer(I dont consider the convention delegates as representatives of the people),the president had to first navigate the hurdle of the recalcitrant governors,to get his party's nomination,thereafter the people may choose from between him and the flagbearers of the other parties.
