Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, to stop the Federal Government, through the Department of State Services, DSS, from further prosecuting him. Emefiele, arraigned on July 25, by DSS over alleged illegal possession of firearm, was, however, admitted to bail and ordered to be remanded in prison custody, but was re-arrested by the DSS. In a fresh application before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, Emefiele through his lawyers, led by Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, is seeking an order of the court discharging him of all charges brought against him by the DSS, arguing that it was in “brazen disobedience” of the subsisting orders of the court granting him bail on July 25, 2023. He further prayed for an order, prohibiting the Federal Government from continuing to enjoy any form of indulgence from the courts except and unless it complies with the bail ruling.“Relying on Section 6(6)(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), relevant sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and under the inherent powers of the court, Emefiele wants the court to stay further proceedings in the current charge until he exhausts all the remedies available to him in law to compel the government and the DSS to obey the order of the court admitting him to bail or remanding him in prison custody, until he perfects his bail terms. In the application, he is seeking to invoke the jurisdiction of the court to enforce its orders, so as not to be seen “as a toothless bulldog or paper tiger.” According to Emefiele, his fresh application seeks to preserve and protect the “efficacy, majesty and integrity of the court as well as the rule of law in our democracy.” Meanwhile, the DSS has joined issues with him, while the court will hear the fresh application today.

Inter Miami have terminated the contract of goalkeeper Nick Marsman weeks after he questioned Lionel Messi's transfer to the club. Back in June, Marsman had raised concerns over Inter Miami's infrastructure and whether it was good enough to welcome a player of Lionel Messi's stature. He told ESPN: "I personally think that this club is not ready for Messi’s arrival. We have a temporary stadium, people can just walk on the pitch, there are no gates. We also leave for the stadium without security. I think they aren't ready. But I hope he comes." Weeks after him questioning the club's decision to sign the Argentine superstar, Marsman has seen his contract terminated by Inter Miami. Since officially joining the club last month Messi has hit the ground running in the US, scoring seven goals in four appearances for the club thus far. His brace against FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup round of 16 took him to the joint-fourth position in the club's all-time highest goalscorers' list. The 32-year Dutch goalkeeper joined the MLS side in 2021 and made 29 appearances for the club.

The Special Assistant on Public Communications to Atiku Abubakar, Mr Phrank Shaibu, said his principal has dragged President Bola Tinubu before the United States of America District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. According to Shaibu, Atiku’s suit against Tinubu is marked No. 23-5099 (N. D. III.). He said the filing of the fresh suit was why Atiku withdrew an existing case before a Circuit Court in Illinois. Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 25 presidential election, is challenging the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission that Tinubu won the poll. In a statement on Sunday night, Shaibu said, “Atiku Abubakar only withdrew the case before a Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois County, United States of America because he is pursuing the same matter in a higher court and he wanted to avoid abuse of court processes. So, this is just the beginning.” He argued that Tinubu’s academic records from primary school till university remained questionable, hence the President’s failure to identify a single former classmate of his. “In the past weeks, Nigerians have been watching the ongoing ministerial screening at the Senate where nominees have been made to reveal their primary, secondary and university history. Some of the ministerial nominees were even classmates with the senators screening them. “However, the man who nominated them has no educational history. He has no primary school, secondary school or university classmates. This is because he has no classmates. He actually fell from the sky. “In recent years, past Presidents have invited their former classmates to Aso Rock Villa. Even President Muhammadu Buhari hosted his classmates from Katsina Middle School. But who did Bola Tinubu invite to the Presidential Villa? Governors from 1999 set.”

Lionel Messi's stunning brace helped Inter Miami seal a dramatic victory against FC Dallas to reach the quarter-finals of the Leagues Cup on Sunday. FC Dallas led 4-2 with 10 minutes left but two late goals took the game to a penalty shootout. Miami won the shootout 5-3 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. "Being 4-2 down in the 80th minute and then coming back, we are very happy with the result," Miami manager Gerardo Martino said. "But the fact that we have gone through shouldn't let us lose sight of the things that we have to improve." Miami were winless in 11 before Messi's arrival but have now won four in a row. The former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain forward opened the scoring after six minutes, sweeping a curling shot inside the near post from outside the penalty area, but Dallas were 3-1 ahead with just over an hour played. Midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi reduced the deficit for Miami but a Robert Taylor own goal restored Dallas' two-goal cushion. Miami were given hope in the 80th minute when Marco Farfan headed a Messi cross into his own net, before the 36-year-old World Cup winner curled home a stunning free-kick to level the tie five minutes later, taking his tally to seven goals in four appearances. Messi set Miami on their way in the penalty shootout with former Barcelona team-mate Sergio Busquets also keeping his cool from 12 yards as Paxton Pomykal's miss for Dallas proved costly. Inter Miami are the first club to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Leagues Cup, which debuted in 2019 and involves teams from the United States and Mexico competing in a knockout format.

Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are reportedly now offering wages over €1m per week to Victor Osimhen, but he remains intent on signing a new Napoli contract. The Nigeria international became the first ever African to be crowned Capocannoniere in Serie A with 26 goals in 32 Serie A games last season, on their way to the Scudetto. His current contract runs to June 2025 and his agent has had several meetings with President Aurelio De Laurentiis to discuss an extension. The sticking point would seem to be the release clause, which Napoli want to set at a minimum of €150m, whereas Osimhen’s representatives are pushing for €110m. Meanwhile, there are reports that Al-Hilal have still not given up on Osimhen and are offering him wages over €1m per week. Aged 24, Osimhen has no intention of moving to the Saudi Pro League at this stage of his career. Napoli paid €75m plus bonuses to sign him from Lille in September 2020.

The Kenyan government has ordered cryptocurrency project Worldcoin to stop signing up new users, citing data privacy concerns. Worldcoin, founded by US tech entrepreneur Sam Altman, offers free crypto tokens to people who agree to have their eyeballs scanned. Thousands of Kenyans have been queuing up at registration centres this week to get the currency worth about $49 (£39). Kenya warned citizens to be cautious giving their data to private companies. A statement from the Communications Authority of Kenya said it had concerns about: •how the biometric data was stored •offering money in exchange for data •having so much data in the hands of a private company. The ministry of the interior has launched an investigation into Worldcoin and called on security services and data protection agencies to establish its authenticity and legality. In one of the pop-up registration centres in the capital, Nairobi, where hundreds had been lining up for the registration, many had been locked out of the process on Wednesday after the large crowd was termed a "security risk". "I've been coming here almost three days to line up and register. I want to register because I'm jobless and I'm broke, that's why I'm here," Webster Musa told the press. "I came here yesterday. I waited until my phone died. So I came again today but I've missed the registration again. I really like Worldcoin because of the money. I'm not worried about the data being taken. As long as the money comes," added Dickson Muli. Worldcoin says it cannot say how many people have had their eyeballs scanned in Kenya. It claims to be creating a new global "identity and financial network". "We are creating the world's largest identity and financial network as a public utility, giving ownership to everyone. And establishing universal access to the global economy regardless of country or background," a statement on the Worldcoin website reads. Mr Altman, who founded Open AI which built chat bot ChatGPT, says he hopes the initiative will help confirm if someone is a human or a robot. He also says this could lead to everyone being paid a universal basic income but it is not clear how. The company insists that no data is stored. However privacy experts worry that sensitive data gathered from scanning a person's iris might get into the wrong hands. Kenya's Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) called for increased vigilance from the public when using Worldcoin saying the process requires "demonstration of proper safeguards under the Data Protection Act 2019". The Kenyan Capital Markets Authority (CMA) stated it was concerned about the ongoing registration and notified Kenyans that Worldcoin was not regulated in Kenya. Under Kenyan law, individuals have a right to not have any personal information unnecessarily required or unnecessarily revealed. Digital rights lawyer Mercy Mutemi also said there were other, less intrusive ways to gain the information that Worldcoin is after. "If the goal is to prove people are human, they can just show up. You don't need to go for the most invasive manner to prove people are human," she said. Worldcoin said that it chose Kenya as the first African country to launch the platform because of the already booming tech space, and the more than four million Kenyans who are already trading in crypto. It has also launched in various countries including Indonesia, France Japan, Germany, Spain and the UK. Data watchdogs in some countries have already said they are examining Worldcoin.

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, insisted the current economic hardship is a necessary price Nigerians must pay to achieve a “balanced” and fair economy. The President, in a national broadcast, told Nigerians that he understood the “hardship” they face but wished “there were other ways” to achieve an inclusive economy. “Our economy is going through a tough patch and you are being hurt by it. The cost of fuel has gone up. Food and other prices have followed it. Households and businesses struggle. Things seem anxious and uncertain. I understand the hardship you face. I wish there were other ways. “But there is not. If there were, I would have taken that route as I came here to help not hurt the people and nation that I love,” Tinubu said in a prepared speech delivered at 7pm. He recalled the imbalance caused by fuel subsidy payment and the “preferential” exchange rate system that ended up making “the elite of the elite” richer and the majority of Nigerians poorer. “This group had amassed so much wealth and power that they became a serious threat to the fairness of our economy and the integrity of our democratic governance. To be blunt, Nigeria could never become the society it was intended to be as long as such small, powerful yet unelected groups hold enormous influence over our political economy and the institutions that govern it. “The whims of the few should never hold dominant sway over the hopes and aspirations of the many. If we are to be a democracy, the people and not the power of money must be sovereign. “The preceding administration saw this looming danger as well. Indeed, it made no provision in the 2023 Appropriations for subsidy after June this year. Removal of this once helpful device that had transformed into a millstone around the country’s neck had become inevitable,” he noted. Tinubu also pointed out the previous multiple exchange rate regime as one of the flawed systems that impoverished the country and handed the economy over to a selected few. The system, he said, “doled” out the resources that should have been used to create jobs to a “tiny elite” in the country on favourable terms. The speech was rife with ‘elite’, ‘preferential’, ‘favorable’ and several other words that connote the historically unfair path the economy has taken in decades. The speech also resonated with his previous “I feel your pains” and “let the poor breathe” memes, which have been described by millions of tweeps who have questioned the sincerity of the President. In the past two weeks since the prices of fuel went up by over 15 per cent, millions of netizens have sarcastically demanded the comeback of ex-President Muhamadu Buhari. Though satirical, the calls explain the depth of suffering and the height of agony Nigerians have witnessed since Tinubu assumed power. The broadcast came exactly two months after he assumed office – a period in the country that has seen a significant rise in the cost of living and a spike in the already high misery index – an economic indicator juxtaposing unemployment and inflation rate. Last month, the inflation reached a new multi-decade high of 22.8 per cent. As high as it was. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) warned that the fuel price increase and the attendant adjustment in other prices would be fully captured in the July consumer price index (CPI). A former Director-General of NBS and leading statistician, Yemi Kale, had told Nigerians that the inflation rate would hit 30 per cent following the fuel subsidy removal. The inflation outlook has been worsened by the sharp post-foreign exchange liberalisation depreciation of naira. Since June 14 when the Central Bank of Nigeria pulled the plug on the FX market, naira has lost nearly half of its value to the dollar. https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria/tinubu-justifies-reforms-unveils-n500b-package-to-ease-pains/

According to reports in France and England, Napoli have rejected an offer worth €140m from Al-Hilal for star striker Victor Osimhen and the player snubbed a €60m per season salary. L’Equipe and Sky Sports UK both claim that the extraordinary proposal was put forward by the club in Saudi Arabia this month. While others have already gone to the Saudi Pro League at the peak of their careers, including Karim Benzema, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Marcelo Brozovic, Osimhen has no intention of making that move yet. It doesn’t hurt that Napoli are discussing a new contract extension for the Nigerian striker, but also worth noting that €140m would’ve been rejected regardless, even if it had come in from a top European side. Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has set the price-tag at over €150m. The salary reportedly offered from Al-Hilal to Osimhen would’ve been worth an extraordinary €60m per season. He is discussing a deal that would be worth €7m per season plus bonuses at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned war is coming back to Russia after a drone attack on the capital Moscow. Mr Zelensky said attacks on Russian territory were an "inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process" of the war between the two countries. Russia's defence ministry said three Ukrainian drones were downed on Sunday, with two crashing into offices. Vnukovo Airport, southwest of the city centre, was also briefly shut. The drone attack in the early hours of Sunday is the latest that Moscow has blamed on Kyiv. And in a video address on Sunday from the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, Mr Zelensky said that Ukraine was getting stronger. "Today is the 522nd day of the so-called 'Special Military Operation', which the Russian leadership thought would last a couple of weeks," he said. "Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia - to its symbolic centres and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process." This characterisation is certainly a level up from Kyiv's normal approach of not admitting responsibility for attacks inside Russia. It may be far from a confession, but President Zelensky clearly feels confident enough to pile on the pressure, and not just on the Kremlin. Drone attacks like these are also an opportunity for him to address the Russian population, the majority of whom appear to believe Moscow's invasion is just and righteous. If they connect explosions close to home with what's going on in Ukraine, as per Mr Zelensky's suggestion, it makes it that bit harder for Vladimir Putin to justify his invasion, which he is only looking to expand. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that Moscow would have to use a nuclear weapon if Kyiv's ongoing counter-offensive was a success. Mr Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council - a body chaired by Mr Putin - said on social media there would be "no other option" if Ukraine took what he described as "our land". Officials said there were no injuries following Saturday's drone attack, and the city's mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the facades of two office buildings were slightly damaged. Photos from the scene show that several windows have been damaged at the corner of the buildings, with debris scattered on the ground below. One eyewitness, who only gave her first name as Liya, told Reuters news agency she could see fire and smoke. "We heard an explosion and it was like a wave, everyone jumped," she said. "Then there was a lot of smoke and you couldn't see anything. From above, you could see fire." Flights were briefly suspended from Vnukovo Airport, southwest of the city centre, and incoming planes were redirected to other airports. In a statement, the defence ministry said the "attempted terrorist attack" had been "thwarted". ----------------------------------------------------- https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66352765
