A United Kingdom-bound Nigerian, Wisdom Chukumerem has been shot dead. The 30-year-old Nigerian who hailed from Awo Ommamma in the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State, was shot three times in his chest by armed robbers at the World Bank junction roundabout in Owerri, the state capital. The father of two was said to be withdrawing money from a Point Of Sale operator when his killers struck. His immediate elder brother, Shedrack who spoke exclusively to The PUNCH in Owerri, on Monday, after the police operatives released the mortuary tally to him and gave him the clean bill of health to bury him, said that his family was trumatised by the killing of his young brother. The distraught 32-year -old said that the armed robbers who robbed the POS operator killed his brother after accusing him of calling policemen to storm the scene. He said that all the appeals his brother made to the armed robbers that he was not calling policemen fell on deaf ears as they shot him dead on the spot. The businessman said that his brother was pronounced dead at the Umuguma Specialists General Hospital where policemen took him. He said, “My name is Shedrack Anulika Chukwumerem. My younger brother’s name is Wisdom Somtochukwu Chukwumerem. He returned from abroad about three years ago. He had a house at world bank Area N And I was living with him in his house when I was driving a commercial service bus known as Bus Imo. “But I relocated back to the village to start up a business. We are from Umuduru Isieke in Awo-omamma in the Oru East local government area of Imo State. At about 8pm on 10th August 2023, I received a distress call from his wife that my brother was shot by armed robbers “So I drove straight to Owerri that same night and I was directed by the Policemen there to come to the Imo State specialist hospital and when I got there I saw my brother’s lifeless body and policemen were present there. “He was married with two kids, all girls. He would have been 30 years on November 27. He ought to be traveling back to the UK by the first week of September before he was shot dead. So, the policemen told me that there was an armed robbery attack at the Umuguma roundabout at a POS stand and my brother was there to withdraw money eventually he was shot because they noticed he was on call and the robbers thought that he was trying to call the police against them. “And he was shot in the left side of his chest. So I deposited his body at the morgue that same night. The policemen took the tally and told me to report the next day. He was my immediate younger brother. I’m 32 years old. He would have been 30 on 27 November. “Now I have been compelled by the police at Umuguma Division to open a case file and I told them that I don’t want any case and I’m not interested in any case. They told me to open it even if I don’t want any case which I did. “I went with them to the scene of the incident. It happened between 8 and 8:30 pm precisely. I have gone to the scene of the incident with the policemen and gone to the mortuary. They took pictures which I paid for. They told me to go to court and swear an affidavit which I did. “The policemen at Umuguma Division transferred the matter to the homicide section of the State CID in Owerri which I did with money all in a quest to release my brother’s corpse for burial. “And I was pushed to contact a lawyer. With the help of the lawyer, I have written an application to the CP for withdrawal of the case. The policemen are with the application which I submitted last week.” Displaying the mortuary tally to our correspondent on Monday, Shedrack said that the policemen at the homicide section of the state police command had released it to him. He said, “After meeting with the IPO in the company of my lawyer this afternoon, the mortuary tally of my brother has been released to me. Look at it. I can now bury him. But I will first take his corpse to a closer mortuary in my town to enable me to plan for his funeral rites easier. “He was our breadwinner. My widowed mother is depressed. Our father died 20 years ago. His first daughter is three years old while the second daughter is just a year and three months. It is a very bad development for us. We are very saddened.” When contacted, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, said that the withdrawal of the case and the family’s request for the police to allow them to bury their son do not in any way affect the investigation process. He said that the police would continue with their investigation and once the suspects are arrested, they would be arraigned for murder. “The withdrawal of the matter by the family doesn’t affect the police investigation. We will continue with the investigation. Once the fleeing suspects are caught, they would be arraigned for murder,” Okoye explained.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, National Union of Pensioners and others in separate interviews with The PUNCH on Tuesday, lamented the hunger among their members and expressed misgivings about the way the palliatives package was being handled by the authorities. Last Thursday, the Federal Government had announced the distribution of N180 billion and 180 trucks of rice to the states to ease the subsidy pains but many governors have kept the materials in warehouses while the workers and residents languish in hunger. The Federal Government announced N5bn palliative for each state of the federation and 180 trucks of rice as part of measures to assuage the pains of the subsidy removal which had led to multiple hikes in fuel pump prices and driven up the prices of goods and services, worsening the poverty level in the country. Announcing the release of the palliative at the end of the 135th National Economic Council meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum disclosed that the N5bn was to enable the state governments to procure 100,000 bags of rice, 40,000 bags of maize and fertilizers to cushion the effect of food shortage across the country. The Assistant General-Secretary, Nigeria Labour Congress, Chris Onyeka, said the delay by the Federal Government in providing its own palliatives for Nigerians was worrisome. According to him, NLC officials in states were not part of the committee involved in the sharing of the palliatives. Onyeka said, “We are not involved. How can we be involved? How can we be involved with the governors to share the federal palliatives? We are not part of it. I told you that what they have done is to dash money, N5bn each, to the boys, who are the state governors.” On whether the labour union was working with states that had their own palliatives, the NLC official said, “For the ones engineered by state governments, our people have been involved since, like in the launching of buses by some states. “But if it is the Federal Government-driven one, we are not interested. It is not part of our agreement.” Asked whether the NLC would want to see the Federal Government speed up the provision of palliatives for Nigerians as demanded by many workers, he replied, “Yes, of course. We have been exercising patience, but the delay is becoming worrisome. Labour faults committee “There is a presidential committee on that and it is supposed to implement this. The President also promised that he is going to restructure the committee. But as we speak, he has not restructured it and that has not happened. They better hasten up because we still have our plans if they fail to act.” Onyeka, however, said the NLC was opposed to the N5bn palliative package given to states, alleging that it was ‘’a form of settlement to state governors.’’ He said, “That money was a dash for the boys. We believe the government has used that money to settle the state governors. It is not for the ordinary Nigerian or worker. “So the possibility that such money will get to Nigerians is very slim and that is the truth. We made it clear that we don’t want any palliative for Nigerian workers and the Nigerian people to be handled by state governors.’’ “We made this very clear to the Federal Government on several occasions. So any money they are giving to them (governors), we are not in support of it,” the NLC official stated. He added, “But the one for Nigerian people and workers, we are still negotiating and we are trying to work that out with the Federal Government. Although, that is if they are willing to live up to their promises to Nigerians.” Corroborating Onyeka, the NLC Chairman in Benue State, Terungwa Igbe said labour leaders were not involved in the palliative committee in the state. Igbe said that contrary to what happened at the national level where labour leaders were involved in the palliative committee, such, he said had yet to be replicated in the state. He said, “I’m not aware of palliative committee set up in the state here but at the national level, labour leaders were Involved and we are hoping that we will be involved in the state too. The spokesperson for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulrazaque Barkindo, could not be reached for comment on the allegations that the governors did not involved the labour leaders in the sharing of the palliatives and the allegations they warehoused the palliatives with little consideration for the suffering masses. But an official said it was too early to level such allegations against the governors. He said “It is too early to ask for any accountability or sharing of the paliative, even if you are the one given this palliative it can take up to five months before you can reach out to every part of a state. “This money was given just last week, so the Nigerian Labour Congress shouldn’t be in a hurry to ask the governors for anything. I am aware that in Adamawa State, government included the NLC in the sharing committee. NLC is not being truthful.” But the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Nigeria Union of Teachers noted that only the implementation of a wage award would be sustainable for the Nigerian workers and not distribution of grains. Workers, others lament The spokesperson for the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Bunmi Ogunkolade, advised the states to quicken the processes while urging pensioners to mount pressure on their governors. “Each state governor should quicken these processes of palliative disbursement. Pensioners should keep hope alive and endure little more. They should put more pressure on their state government. We should not keep quiet until we die,’’ he counselled. Workers in the Lagos State Public Service have also decried the delay in the distribution of the palliatives by the state government. A worker at the Audit Service Commission, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent on Tuesday that they have not received any grant or palliative from the state. “I am a civil servant and we have not gotten any special grant or palliative from the state,” she said. She added that workers in the state still go to work every day, saying, “We still report at the office every day.” She called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu “to be more proactive and put words to action both in the (public) service and to Lagosians at large.” Like their counterparts in Lagos, the NLC and Trade Union Congress in Kwara State said their members had yet to receive the promised palliative from the state government. The Chairman of the Kwara State branch of the NLC, Saheed Olayinka said that no worker in the state has received foodstuff or any other package, apart from the N10,000 added to their salary. “The labour unions were not included in the committee set up by the government to distribute the palliatives, we have not received anything from the government,” he said. The TUC chairman in the state, Tunde Joseph, echoed the same sentiment, saying, “Our members have not received any foodstuff from the government apart from the N10,000 put on the workers’ salary.” The Delta State chapter of the NLC said it is discussing the issue of palliative distribution with the state government. The state NLC Chairman, Goodluck Ofobruku said nothing had been given to the workers in the state. In Gombe State, the government’s plans to add an extra N10,000 to the workers’ salary had yet to take off. The NLC Secretary in the state, Ibrahim Fika, said the wage award would run for six months. The Director-General, Press Affairs, Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, disclosed that the governor is targeting about 420,000 beneficiaries. Anambra State government said it would give N12,000 monthly to its workers. Announcing the sharing formula for the palliatives on Tuesday, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State said he raised the number of households targeted for palliatives across the state from 300,000 to 400,000 households. Each household will be made up of six family members to be multiplied by 400,000 which, by implication, moves Zulum’s new target to 2.4m individuals. https://punchng.com/anger-as-states-warehouse-rice-delay-palliatives-sharing/

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez has slammed RFEF president Luis Rubiales for kissing World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso. 'Apologies are not enough' says the Spanish prime minister insisting that Luis Rubiales kissing World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso was an 'unacceptable gesture' The president of the Spanish football federation grabbed and kissed Hermoso on the lips on the podium during the trophy presentation ceremony of the 2023 World Cup final, after Jorge Vilda's troops beat England 1-0. After the incident, the official faced flak from all quarters, which forced him to apologise, despite remaining defiant in his initial reaction as he labelled his critics "losers" and "a**holes". Rubiales' position is coming under increasing pressure, with Spanish prime minister Sanchez coming out to insist that "apologies are not enough" considering the magnitude of the incident. Yolanda Diaz, the second deputy prime minister of Spain, has also criticised Rubiales and has demanded his resignation as "a woman has been harassed and assaulted”. Meanwhile, Irene Montero, the minister for equality, perceives the incident as a “form of sexual violence”. Hermoso admitted she “did not like that” but later spoke out in defence of Rubiales, dismissing his actions as a "totally spontaneous mutual gesture because of the immense joy that winning a World Cup brings". She further stressed that the official's "behaviour with all of us has been outstanding and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude". Despite the apology, Rubiales stands on shaken ground and it remains to be seen if he remains in his role as RFEF president amid growing pressure from Spanish politicians.

Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar ordered a helicopter to be sent to try and rescue those trapped aboard the chairlift. An "extremely risky" rescue effort is under way to save six children and two teachers who are trapped in a chairlift dangling 274m (900ft) over a canyon in Pakistan. Emergency workers using a helicopter are attempting to free the eight people, who have been stuck high in the air after a cable snapped on Tuesday. Spanning a river and connecting villages in Battagram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the chairlift is used by local villagers to shorten the distance to nearby schools, government offices and other businesses. The children had been using the chairlift to get to school but have been stranded since 7am local time (3am UK). Taimoor Khan, a spokesman for the disaster management authority, said a helicopter was dispatched to the site on orders by the prime minister to try and pluck the eight out of the chairlift. Caretaker PM Anwaar ul Haq Kakar said he has told authorities to check the safety of all private chairlifts. Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that a cable had broken in the lift service and attempts at fixing the fault had been unsuccessful. One security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said special services troops, trained in sling operations, are involved in this "extremely dangerous and risky operation". A rescue official said one child fainted "due to heat and fear". Two army helicopters have been dispatched to the scene but the rescue mission is complicated due to gusty winds in the area and the fact the helicopters' rotor blades risk further destabilising the lift, he said. Army commandos could be seen on local TV trying to lower themselves on ropes from the choppers toward the gondola. The incident comes several years after ten people were killed when a cable car lift installed by local villagers in the popular mountain resort of Murree broke and fell into a ravine hundreds of feet deep in 2017. https://news.sky.com/story/pakistan-six-children-and-two-adults-trapped-in-chairlift-dangling-350m-above/

Saudi Arabia reportedly want a team in the Champions League as they plan a sensational 'wild card' request to UEFA. According to a report in Corriere dello Sport, Saudi authorities want the Pro League winners to have a shot at the Champions League from the 2024-25 season. They plan to propose a wild card entry that would allow the Saudi domestic league champions to participate in Europe's top club competition. The think tank at Jeddah would request UEFA to discard the current structure of the competition and replace it with a single championship-like format with 36 teams with eight matches for each team before the knockout stages. This would not only enable UEFA to increase the number of matches but also allow the Saudi team to participate in Europe. If this proposal gets accepted by UEFA, it could potentially see the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Neymar play in Europe once again. Moreover, this would undoubtedly further enhance the profile and prestige of the Saudi Pro League on a global scale. This is a significant challenge for the Saudi authorities to convince UEFA as it might require a complete structural overhaul of the competition. It remains to be seen if this proposal sees light at the end of the tunnel. https://www.goal.com/en/news/saudi-arabia-champions-league-wild-card-uefa
