Serie A clubs have joined a statement warning they will only release players for the Africa Cup of Nations from January 3 rather than the December 27 date set by FIFA. The World League Forum is an umbrella organisation covering the major league clubs from around the globe. They released a statement today warning that the FIFA regulation date of December 27, 13 days before the competition begins rather than the seven days that has been organised for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is “unreasonable and disproportionate.” The clubs are therefore refusing to let their players leave for international duty until January 3. Serie A is on a Christmas break until January 6, but the delay is another step in the battle between clubs and the African Federations. Inevitably, the statement from the World League Forum also points out that there are growing concerns about the tournament on the whole, as it takes place during a spoke of COVID cases in a country Cameroon where only five per cent of the population is vaccinated. “The AFCON taking place in the middle of the current pandemic with players’ health at stake and concerns on the spread of the pandemic, dialog is essential. “Clarity would be needed on the protocols to be in place for the tournament as we are still unaware of what measures will be implemented.”

Cristiano Ronaldo finished 2021 as Juventus’ top scorer of the year, despite leaving the club in the summer. The 36-year-old Portuguese star left Turin for Manchester United in the summer transfer window, but still closed out the year as the club’s top scorer, highlighting their issues finding the back of the net this campaign under coach Massimiliano Allegri. As highlighted by ESPN, Argentinian star Lionel Messi ended 2021 in a similar position; he finished the year as Barcelona’s top scorer, despite leaving on a free transfer in June. Both sides have clearly suffered without their stars, who have won 12 Ballon d’Or awards between them. Ronaldo scored 20 goals for the Bianconeri across all competitions this year, remaining as clinical as ever, despite turning 36 this year. He has remained equally as decisive in England, scoring 13 goals in 18 games for Manchester United. Messi, on the other hand, has struggled to adapt to life in France, only scoring once in Ligue 1 this campaign, although he has scored five goals in five Champions League matches.

Spezia managed to upset Napoli 1-0 tonight without taking a single shot on target. Thiago Motta’s side secured the three points at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after they were gifted a goal by defender Juan Jesus, who put the ball into the back of his own net in the 37th minute. As reported by Opta Paolo, Spezia are the first team to have won a league match without taking a single shot on target for the first time since the 2004/05 season, when Opta began collecting this data. The Ligurian side had to survive an onslaught in order to take home the three points, with Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli taking 26 shots in total, seven of which were on target . The victory could prove key for Spezia, who now sit five points ahead of relegation candidates Genoa heading into the Christmas break. Recent reports suggested that coach Thiago Motta was set to lose his job after the festive period, but today’s win over the Partenopei could secure his position, at least for now.

Lazio’s ultras have released a statement telling defender Francesco Acerbi to leave the club. The 33-year-old Italian centre back has been under fire in the Italian capital after doing a ‘shhh’ gesture following his goal in the Biancocelesti’s 3-1 win over Genoa last weekend. The player was responding to the recent criticisms that he has not properly adapted to coach Maurizio Sarri’s four-man defence and tactical system. Acerbi initially defended his celebration in a post-match interview; regarding the criticisms, he noted that ‘I couldn’t care less, it’s part of our job.’ A few hours lately, the former Sassuolo defender apologised for his celebration on social media, but this has done little to calm a section on the Biancocelesti fans. The Lazio ultras are known for being controversial and divisive, and it remains to be seen now how both Acerbi and the club will respond to this statement. Below is the Lazio Ultras statement in full: ‘Acerbi man without honour, leave Rome immediately. No forgiveness for those who betray! This is not just a slogan, but much more. It means that the fans are worth more than the players, that our flag is sacred! ‘Unfortunately, today’s players are too used to it and have never seen a proper protest. We protested against Chinaglia, Nesta and Mihajlovic (to name but three), monuments to our history. We went into the changing rooms at Tor di Quinto and Formello because some players, even players with a lot more honour than one from Chievo and Sassuolo, had disrespected us. ‘And we’re supposed to let pass the celebration and disrespect of a player who has shown that he despises an entire fanbase? Acerbi silenced the curva in the last match after months of support to the bitter end, Today he had the opportunity, as a man, to apologise under the guest sector occupied by 3000 Lazio fans. ‘Instead, at the end of the game, like a rabbit, while the other players came to cheer with us, he walked away. He backed out when a sincere apology would have sufficed. The fact that Acerbi is an important player in Lazio’s squad doesn’t matter to us. What matters to us is sweat, grit and respect. That’s why, as of today, Francesco Acerbi is no longer welcome here in Rome. ‘As long as he is here, he will be booed, In every game! “And who knows how many you’ve seen and how many you’ll see, sad players who never won”. ACERBI GO AWAY! ULTRAS LAZIO’
