One thing people need to understand is that there are different kinds of Strikers/Centre Forwards. It all depends on the quality of the player and the instructions of the coach.

The False 9 phenomenon is more of a ROLE than it is about wingers being deployed as strikers or attacking midfielders being asked to play the striking position.

The role of the false 9 is to drag defenders out by dropping deep and spreading passes mostly to the wings. This gives room for the wingers and attacking midfielders to thrive and also helps to create space for the Centre Forward when play is pushed upwards.

Judging by this definition, we can as well say that Harry Kane has been playing the role of a false 9 recently ( at least for the past two seasons).

It is more of a role than anything else.

More reason why VVD gets accolades on this regard.
