Hi,

If you applied for relocation, I expect that by now, you must have seen the result (either your application was granted or denied).

The next line of action is contained in the relocation letter you are required to print online. You'll have to report at the state secretariat of that new state for your posting. Do you get it?

Politics / Olusola Oke (AD) May Be The Biggest Beneficiary Of A Jimoh Ibrahim Win In Court by Davo93(m): 6:25pm On Nov 01, 2016
The pillars of smokes that flared from burning tyres on major streets of Akure last week bring back to memories of the post-election violence that ravaged the state in 1983. 33 years later, the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko has rushed to President Muhammadu Buhari to tell him the danger he believes the latest decision taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will pose to the stability of the state if allowed to stand.

The struggle for the man who succeeds Mimiko as the state governor is getting intense by the day. The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja will now decide the substantive flag bearer of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the November 26 governorship election. Whatever the outcome of the appeal, it is capable of deciding who wins the election.

What you might have missed about the ‘wrestle’ between two PDP flag bearers for the #OndoDecides
The national leadership tussle of the PDP also played out in the nomination of the party’s candidate for the Ondo state election. Two primary elections of the party were held in August. Eyitayo Jegede emerged the winner of the Ahmed Markafi-led PDP while Jimoh Ibrahim was announced the winner of the primary coordinated by the Ali Modu Sheriff faction.

INEC had resolved to recognize Jegede as the bonafide PDP flag bearer since it monitored the primary election that produced him. However, the electoral body changed its position last week. INEC said its new stance was triggered by a ruling handed down by Justice Abang Okon of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordering the electoral body to replace Jegede’s name with Ibrahim’s.

As it stands, “The situation will continue that way until the matter is decided by the Supreme Court if the parties choose to proceed to the apex court,” said Ondo state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje.

Eyitayo Jegede, the PDP, and sympathizers have reportedly filed four different suits before the Court of Appeal challenging the ruling of the Okon-led Federal High Court, all in a bid to restore Jegede’s name as the authentic PDP candidate on INEC’s list.

Considering the peculiarity of the suits, the three-man panel of the appellate court led by Justice Jumai Sankey has fixed November 1 to 3 for the hearing of the various appeals and supporting motions on the matter.

The eventual judgement at the Court of Appeal will either validate Jimoh Ibrahim’s candidacy or restore that of Eyitayo Jegede. In any of those ways, the political tussle may still be far from over; the parties involved will be left with the option of approaching the Supreme Court to seek redress if any them is not satisfied.

In spite of the opportunity to progress to the Supreme Court, there are insinuations that what may play out at the country’s apex court, after all, may not be different from what will be decided by the Court of Appeal now. This has made all parties involved to see this stage of the case as very important, strategic and crucial to their chances.

Olusola Oke may be the biggest beneficiary of a Jimoh Ibrahim win in court
If Jimoh Ibrahim scales all the ‘court hurdles’ ahead and remains the INEC-recognized PDP gubernatorial candidate, a massive shift of political allegiance is very possible. The billionaire businessman and governorship hopeful has very little support and popularity in the state wing of the PDP, which is largely controlled by the outgoing governor.

Speaking to Ventures Africa, a member of the PDP in Ondo state and the Secretary of Orange Youth Network, Fagbemigun Israel insisted that Eyitayo Jegede is the choice of the party. When asked if party members in the state will be willing to support Jimoh Ibrahim if the Court of Appeal eventually rules in his favour, Israel said “No we won’t, because he lacks the integrity and goodwill. However, we know it won’t go his way unless we want to rewrite the entire electoral law of the country.”

A win for Jimoh Ibrahim will be a very big blow to Mimiko and Jegede’s camp. This could make many PDP supporters in the state and objective followers of political events decide differently on whom to vote for later in the month.

Despite being one of Nigeria’s most successful and popular businessmen, Jimoh Ibrahim has not done enough to carve out a substantial political niche for himself to the extent that he will be regarded as a force to reckon with. Without the support of Governor Mimiko and members of the state PDP, he only has little chance of coasting to victory.

Olusola Oke of the Action for Democracy (AD) looks the most favourable of other aspirants to be considered by PDP supporters in the state if the Jegede project fails. Oke is a grassroots politician who seems to understand the state’s political landscape better.

He has been in the PDP, the APC and now the AD. Oke decamped from the APC to the AD after he emerged the second runner up in the controversial APC governorship primary election which produced Rotimi Akeredolu as the APC candidate. He would be seen as a preferred choice to Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a PDP-controlled Ondo state.

Oke comes from a loosely contested southern district of the state, unlike Rotimi Akeredolu who is from a keenly contested northern district of the state. In the last decade, PDP’s grip of the southern areas of the state has been steadfast and this could prove a point for Oke this time again, at the expense of Akeredolu’s consideration.

In the 2012 gubernatorial election in the state, Oke came second, after Olusegun Mimiko who won the poll. Apparently, Olusola Oke has more political experience and better antecedents compared to Akeredolu and Jimoh Ibrahim. A governorship election without Mimiko’s Eyitayo Jegede will be more of a blessing to Olusola Oke than any of the other candidates.

On the other hand, a victory for Eyitayo Jegede at the court will be a great relief to the Ondo state PDP. In fact, it could serve as leverage for Jegede’s campaign and election in the November 26 poll.

Politics / #DasukiGate: Is Obanikoro Speaking The Truth Or Seeking A Deal? by Davo93(m): 10:33am On Oct 21, 2016
Barely three days in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has reportedly revealed how he spent the N4.68bn he allegedly collected from the then Dasuki-led Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014. He named the serving governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose and the Osun state Peoples Democratic Party flag bearer for the 2014 gubernatorial election, Iyiola Omisore, as beneficiaries of the slush fund.

Obanikoro flew into Nigeria from the United States on Monday and reported to the EFCC alongside his counsel. He has been on the radar of the anti-graft agency since the embattled ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, listed him among those who received a part of the $2.1 bn from the #DasukiGate.

According to reports, Obanikoro told the EFCC that, “Out of N4.685billon transferred to Sylva McNamara Limited, N3.880billion was transferred to both Ayodele Fayose and Senator Omisore through cash and bank transfers.”

Apart from the money allegedly given to Fayose and Omisore, Obanikoro reportedly confessed to having disbursed another N785m to campaign against Boko Haram in Lagos. “He [Obanikoro] told the panel [at the EFCC] that the N785m was spent on procurement of souvenirs for the campaign against Boko Haram in Lagos out of which N200m was spent on surveillance activities and N200m out of other remaining funds for operations was managed by the supposed owner of the company, Taiwo Kareem,” a source in the commission told The Punch newspaper.

Looking at the circumstances that surround the ‘confessions’ made by Obanikoro and statements by those allegedly involved in the money disbursement, questions are being asked if the former minister is saying the truth or he seeks a deal that would eventually absolve him of allegations.

It is surprising to see Obanikoro voluntarily return to Nigeria now after about a year since the EFCC listed him as one of those who received money from Dasuki. His confessions also make his show up very suspicious. Could it be that the EFCC and Obanikoro have reached an agreement? An agreement that will see Obanikoro come to Nigeria and give credence to past ‘revelations’ that have implicated those involved in the #DasukiGate in exchange for lesser trial or not eventually charged to court.

In January 2016, the former secretary of the PDP in Ekiti state, Tope Aluko came out with a similar revelation in a controversial manner. Aluko, who had testified in the election tribunal to support Fayose’s election over a year ago, controversially went on Channels Television to say the election wasn’t free and fair.

If Aluko’s confession was correct and anything to go by, his previous testimony at the tribunal means he lied under oath which makes him liable to be prosecuted for perjury. But till now, his confession which substantiated the allegation levelled against Fayose by the EFCC has seemingly absolved him from the whole crisis, despite being a major player in it. Could Obanikoro be seeking a similar deal?

However, the confession of the onetime Lagos state governorship hopeful cannot be totally dismissed based on the controversies that surround it. After all, it may be true. If that is the case, this means the EFCC has gotten a vital and crucial confession that would help its investigation of the #DasukiGate.

In the meantime, Governor Ayodele Fayose enjoys immunity from any arrest or prosecution. Obanikoro is currently detained and Omisore does not enjoy immunity too and could be arrested. Whatever the EFCC does with Obanikoro and his testimony could tell us if he is looking to tell the truth or just seeking out a deal.

Politics / Dasuki’s Ordered Release Is Another Litmus Test For Buhari’s Regard For The Law by Davo93(m): 9:08am On Oct 07, 2016
On Tuesday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court ruled in favour of Sambo Dasuki, Nigeria’s former National Security Adviser (NSA). The court described Dasuki’s continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) as “unlawful, arbitrary and a violation of his right to liberty” and therefore ordered his release. The court also ordered the federal government to pay Dasuki N15m damages. The questions now is, will the Buhari-led government obey the court ruling?

In March 2016, Dasuki had approached the ECOWAS court requesting that the regional court declare the action of the Nigerian government, of keeping him in detention after several Nigerian courts had granted him bail, as unlawful. The former security chief also asked the court to order his release and the release of his properties that were confiscated during the time he was arrested.

Dasuki was arrested and has remained in detention since November 2015. He was accused of diverting and sharing $2.2 bn government fund meant for the procurement of arms. Sambo Dasuki was appointed the NSA by former President Goodluck Jonathan on June 22, 2012. He served in the same capacity until he was relieved by Muhammadu Buhari barely two months he assumed office as president.

While delivering his verdict, Justice Chijioke Nwoke of the regional court said, “Having perused the case before us, we have come to the conclusion that the re-arrest and detention of the applicant after he had been granted bail by three courts since December last year [make a mockery] of the rule of law. The executive arm should not interfere with the judiciary.

“Even if the applicant has committed crimes of whatever nature, the principle of innocence must be respected, and the fact that he has been charged to court does not disentitle him to the freedom of liberty. Courts must rise to their responsibilities and prevent executive lawlessness.”

Despite several previous judicial rulings that have ordered Dasuki’s release, President Buhari has vowed not to free Dasuki. During the presidential media chat that held at the presidential Villa on December 30, Buhari insisted that the ex-NSA would jump bail if released. “If you see the atrocities these people committed against this country, we can’t allow them to jump bail,” he said.

Reacting to the health grounds on which two different courts granted Dasuki bail, Buhari queried that “what of the over two million people displaced, most of them orphans whose fathers have been killed, what type of government do you want to run? We cannot allow that.” Many Nigerians have described the president’s statements during the media chat as a mockery of the country’s judiciary and a disregard for the rule of law.

On October 1, while delivering his Independence Day speech, President Buhari mentioned that “corruption is a cancer which must be fought with all the weapons at our disposal” but he promised that “in fighting corruption, however, the government would adhere strictly [to] the rule of law.”

Dasuki’s case is the first corruption-related case involving the government that has gotten a verdict since Buhari gave his speech four days ago. This is definitely a litmus test for Buhari and his government. If the federal government decides to disobey the ECOWAS court’s ruling, it points to the insincerity of the president’s statements and expression towards fighting corruption and at the same time making a case for Nigerians to doubt what the president says in the future.

NYSC / Not All Students On The Approved Senate List Will Be Mobilized For NYSC Batch B by Davo93(m): 6:07am On Oct 07, 2016
Strong indications have emerged that not all students, whose names appeared on the lists of recently approved results by the University Senate will be mobilized for the NYSC Batch ‘B’ proposed to begin next month.

Late Wednesday, OAU Peeps News Agency gathered that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has sent memos to the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) of various institutions mandating them to shed the list of their graduating students presented for the coming batch.

For instance, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the number of graduating students that are due to go with Batch ‘B’ was 2,314. However, NYSC has mandated the institution to reduce the number to 894, indicating over 60 percent reduction. Our correspondents were also able to gather that it is the same situation in schools that are presenting prospective corps members (PCMs).

The latest development was borne out of the complaint of lack of sufficient fund by the NYSC. Obviously, the cash crunch cum recession period tells the obvious and it has now weighed its unpleasant effects on prospective corps members.

As at the time of filing this report, we have not been able to confirm yet neither the level of reduction in the number of PCMs to be presented by Obafemi Awolowo University nor the method that will be adopted to prune down the already pasted list of prospective corps members.

However, non-official sources at the DSA told us that OAU is also affected by the development. About 4,000 PCMs are expected to be mobilized for the Batch ‘B’ by OAU, but going by the rate of reduction given to other institutions, OAU may end up mobilizing just 1,600 graduating students.

In the mean time, online registration for prospective corps members on NYSC website would begin on October 17.

Politics / Can APC Leverage On The Edo Governorship Win To Claim Ondo State? by Davo93(m): 4:02pm On Oct 01, 2016
On Thursday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Edo governorship election. Although controversies continue to trail the conduct of the polls, if Obaseki’s win stands, it will extend APC’s reign in the state by another four years. In the meantime, there are talks on whether the ruling party can leverage on its current momentum to win the Ondo state governorship election scheduled for November 26.

In the results announced by the INEC’s Returning Officer in Edo state, Kayode Soremekun, APC polled 319, 483 votes, as against 253, 173 votes garnered by its closest rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Obaseki’s party won in 13 out of the 18 Local Government Areas in the state.

“The state has a total of 1,900,223 registered voters, and 622,039 were accredited for the election while a total of 613,244 votes were [cast]. A total of 582,299 votes were valid and 30,945 votes were rejected across the eighteen (18) Local Government Areas in the state,” INEC said in a statement.

The Edo governorship poll has since generated mixed reactions from political stakeholders. Before the collation of the election results ended, PDP’s candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu rejected the election results citing electoral malpractice. There were reports that some party officials gave voters money at their polling units so that they could vote for a particular candidate.

Can APC leverage on its current momentum to claim Ondo state?
Barring a last-minute postponement, Ondo state governorship election will hold on November 26. Late on Thursday, INEC released the list of the governorship candidates contesting in the election. There are 29 candidates including APC’s Rotimi Akeredolu and Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP.

The political landscape in Ondo state is different from that of Edo state. Unlike the latter that has its incumbent governor from the APC, Ondo state has never had its governor from the APC or the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN [that merged with the Congress for Progressive Change to form the new APC]. The current state governor, Olusegun Mimiko is from the PDP and he has been at the helm of the state’s affairs for the last 8 years.

Obviously, the APC will need to go the extra mile if it will dislodge the PDP. At the moment, troubles that arose during the APC primary election are yet to be resolved. None of the major aspirants of the controversial governorship primary election has endorsed or pledged his support for Akeredolu. This has also polarized the interests of the party’s chieftains in the coming election. This adds up to the task of mobilizing a better support for Akeredolu, who had a disappointing outing in the last governorship election in the state.

The PDP in Ondo currently has better chances, and as things stand now, the divided APC household will need more than a momentum from Edo’s win to take over from a more united PDP come November 26 if the governorship election lives up to expectation.

Politics / If PDP Wishes To Remain Relevant, It Should Focus On Building Viable Opposition by Davo93(m): 11:29am On Sep 16, 2016
Nigeria’s major political opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Buhari to resign. The spokesperson and a member of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Dayo Adeyeye reportedly said that Buhari should quit office immediately. But before the President calls it quit, he has “…to return the country to how he met it,”

PDP’s claim that President Buhari has led Nigeria into recession, now heading towards depression states the obvious. Adeyeye argued that “in 2015 when the President came to power, a bag of rice was selling at N7,000, but now, it is above N20,000; a ‘mudu’ of beans was N150 then and now, it is N500; one US dollar was then trading for N197 but now it is over N400. Also, a litre of fuel was N87 but now is N145; cost of transportation and other services have skyrocketed.”

Recession is the new song in Nigeria, and truly, both the young and the old feel its effects. But Nigerians need the PDP to do more than call for the president to resign. Nigerians need the PDP to do the work to develop real opposition that can put this current government on its toes.

Taking Nigeria back to where it was in May 2015 is not acceptable
Adeyeye was correct about his evaluations of the current economic situation in the country, but saying Nigeria should return to where it was on the last day of the previous government is silly politics and wasted opportunity. President Buhari promised Nigerians heaven on earth, and he rode these promises to electoral victory. If PDP is smart, they will push him to account for his failure to meet his promises. It’s good political strategy. It’s good for our democracy, and it’s good for the nigerian people.

…and resignation is a journey of a thousand miles that won’t start
Perhaps in a saner country, reasons that are less weighty than this could have warranted the leader’s resignation, but definitely not in a country like Nigeria. President Buhari has in his cabinet, a Dalung, who has since proved to be someone with zero to offer in his current capacity as the Sports’ minister. After completely fumbling the Olympics he continues to parade himself in public with no consequence. If Buhari has refused calls for him to relieve a minister who has been performing below par, then Adeyeye and his party need to stop the fantasy of a presidential resignation.

…but they should focus on building a structured, viable opposition
More than a year after the All Progressives Congress (APC) gained federal power, the vacuum of a viable opposition is yet be filled. Of course, there are budding political parties hoping to play this role, but they lack the support and membership base that could make them much of a watchdog of the present government. This leaves the PDP as the strongest possible contender. But unfortunately, the present ‘structure’ in PDP is not any way near the specs of a viable opposition. Today, the PDP has no clear leadership. It has two ‘leaders’ claiming the chairmanship of the party. The crisis has reached state level, where state wings of the party also now have two factions.

Most recently, members of the PDP in Ondo state staged two different primary governorship elections. One was supervised by the Ahmed Markafi-led National Working Committee and the other by Ali Modu Sheriff. How can a political party afflicted by such huge internal divisions produce better leadership for the country?

Nigerians yearn for a reformed and formidable political opposition, an opposition that can put the present government on its toes, a party that can create a dynamic political environment that fosters debate that serves its citizens.

… because Nigeria’s democracy will win
Ultimately, in 2019, Nigerians will have another chance to choose their leaders. If PDP wishes to remain relevant, it has to start convincing Nigerians now. Buhari’s underperformance is not enough of a reason for Nigeria’s suffering citizens to settle for a crisis-ridden PDP. Criticizing the present government is not necessarily a waste of valuable energy as debate is vital to a functioning democracy but in PDP’s case, it would make a lot more sense to do so from a position of political strength and clarity.
