EducationProject Let Go Season 2: OAU Students Donate To The Less Privileged by Davo93(op): 8:56pm On Feb 28, 2016
Obafemi Awolowo University students came together on Saturday at the Pit Theartre of the institution to donate material things including cloths to the less privileged especially to the children that are in the orphanage homes.

The event which is the second edition of 'Project Let Go Africa' took a stylish and improved direction as participants were taken through a seminar where Youths and Impact were discussed. Speakers at the event include Matthew Ojo (Dream Coach, Author, Musician), Igba Joshua (CEO, Neonatar Media), Abimbola Akinsanya (OAP, Convener of Bimbo and Friends), Adegbulugbe Folajimi (CEO, Jo Pizza Company and Chef), Olabode Emmanuel Olawumi (Creative Director, OYA Magazine) and Dumebi Ezar Ehigiator (Child Educator, School Media Speciatlist, Library Consultant and Author).

Olabode Emmanuel of OYA Magazine in his revelation during the event stated that the the Nigerian Education industry did not help him in setting up his dream. “What they teach us in school does not tally with what happens outside. My lecturers don’t come to class; they give me materials that i read on google. The only opportunity the school afforded me is a platform to meet people.” Emmanuel revealed.

Abimbola Akinsanya in her own submission said there is this blame shift here and there. “For us to fix the education system, we need to try our personal baby step” she said. Abimbola however highlighted two basic keys to development which are; Educate yourself with google and volunteer to do internship in the line of business you want to do.

Dumebi Ezar Ehigiator, a Child Educator, School Media Specialist, Library talked about purpose and how to go about fulfilling it despite all odds. Dumebi was present for the event with her husband.

At about midway into the event, Samwise lighted the mood of participants with the sonorous dispensation of songs and guitar performance. Veektor, a Poet also performed poetry to thrill the participants with the plea to the world to let go in spite of all non-encouraging turn of events. Showbaba was also around to spray the laughing gas to participants as he cracked jokes that got everyone laughing.

“In 2007, God told me in a dream to draw a structure without which i could not sleep. I eventually drew it. Moving from Chemical Engineering and getting to ODLT, i heard a voice telling me that this is the centre of industrialization and commercialization, that was how NEONATAR was birthed” Igba Joshua in the course of the programme revealed how he started Neonatar Media.

Adegbulugbe Folajimi, the CEO, Jo’s Indulge (a brand of Jo Pizza Company) started Jos because when he got to OAU, he had similar dishes been taken at all times, hence the challenge for him to do something different. Responding to a question about the start up capital, Folajimi said he saved up to buy the starting needs based on priority.

Another speaker at the event is the convener of Dream Seminar, Matthew Ojo . He is a Dream Coach, Author, Musician. In his own words, many identity proxies affect who we are and they are not what we are. He listed name, background, race, qualifications as those identity proxies.

True identity he defined as a reflection of the mind of the Creator on the created, expressed as innate potentials and abilities that make the created unique and distinguished for the accomplishment of its purpose. He emphasized the need of the participants to discover their identity. “We are all born fine but we must be refined in order to become defined. It is only when a man is defined that he discovers his true identity” Matthew said.

Donors were given free shirts courtesy of JaniCuts Fashion house, House of TNT, PRENDOZA and HOUSE OF ANNIE OTI. Free WiFi at venue was also available from FON. Also, Snacks and drinks at the venue were provided freely by chowrite cakes and Jo's indulge.

In his closing remarks, Ajani Oluseyi (JaniCuts), the leader of the organizers of ‘Project Let Go Africa’ Season 2 said the initiative started last year but without a seminar that has been added this year. According to him, the organizers frown at wastage even when some less privileged persons lack these basic materials been wasted.

PoliticsI Do Not Regret My Actions Regarding The Education Sector - Obasanjo by Davo93(op):
Former Nigerian president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at the 7th round-the-table discussion which took place at the Obafemi Awolowo Universitys Staff Club has said that he has no regrets regarding the actions he took concerning the education sector when he was in power.

In his words, I have no regrets in whatever I have done in the education sector. If I have the chance, I will do it again. When I came in as a military head, I established UBE (Universal Basic Education), when I came in as a civilian president, I established UBE. This was in response to a question raised by a professor who stated that during Obasanjos tenure in 1984, catering for students was abolished.

Obasanjo in a bid to answer the question said it would not have been possible to provide quality education to students and at the same time feed them without paying a penny. He said there was no way the feeding could have continued.

“I have no regrets regarding the decisions I took in terms of education including removing free food in our institutions. We had 53 institutions when I came in 1999 but as at the time I left we had 150 institutions.

“I prefer to have all persons in schools than to have some few persons simply enjoying free food.”

A student of political science who also had the privilege of asking the former president a question, sought to know the available opportunities that await the younger generation in politics and the issue of god-fatherism that has plagued the Nigerian political world . The former president reminded him that he had approximately 60 people who were below the age of 40 that worked with him during his tenure.

He furthered in response by stating that, he does not have a godfather. According to Obasanjo, if what you are waiting for is for someone to prepare the ground for you, you may wait till eternity. You have to get your hands dirty, get your feet wet.

The elder statesman did not however end without commenting on the political party where he led the nation as the President; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He pointed out the fact that the money needed for sponsoring elections these days is outrageous, which does not favour an ordinary man. He mentioned that the monetary support given to the PDP in 1998/9 was $7 million, in 2003, $9 million while he said he heard from a reliable source that a sum of $4 billion was spent during the last election. He concluded that things could not go on that way.

Education“When You Are Eating, You Don’t Talk” – Lai Mohammed by Davo93(op):
The Honourable Minister for Information and Culture – Alhaji Lai Mohammed was at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Friday 29th of January, 2016 in honour of the University’s Faculty of Arts invitation, who invited him to their annual Faculty’s Distinguished Guest Lecture as the guest lecturer.

In his delivered lecture titled “Nexus between corruption and Underdevelopment of the Nigerian state”, the minister examined burning national issues, most especially those relating to corruption and administration. At the closing stages of his delivery, he presented an analogy during which he stated that it is not right for a person to be talking while he or she is eating.

“Once a time, a very vocal and (God) fearing professor was nominated as a Minister. Because he was so vocal, so (God) fearing and he was actually seen as a defender of the masses, his constituency – the academics – were very happy that at least, they have somebody who is going to represent them and represent the masses in the government. But after about 2-3 years in government, nobody heard him champion the course of the masses, nobody heard him denounce corruption. After three years, there was a cabinet reshuffling and he went back to the university. When he got there, his colleagues were very infuriated and narrated to him their disappointment. They told him they felt with him in government, war against corruption would be championed by him. The professor looked at them and replied by saying “You don’t understand. It is about etiquette and table manners, when you are eating, you don’t talk”.

The message behind this analogy is very tricky to decipher. While some school of thought believes that Alhaji Lai Mohammed is trying to suggest he might keep mute even in the face of scandals and irregularities that may arise in the course of the current administration, some others believe he just put up the analogy as a form of reference to past administrators and administrations who have in one way or the other committed such offences.

The highlights of the event include; Presentation of distinguished alumnus award to the Minister himself, who is an alumnus of the Department of French, Faculty of Arts, University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) and performances by the ever-entertaining Dramatic Arts Department troupe. Other awardees at the event include; Hon Kehinde Bamigbetan and Hon Oluseye Oladejo who were both alumni and former Student Union leaders. Prominent guests who graced the event include the Dean, Faculty of Arts – Professor Gbemisola Adeoti, former Dean of the Faculty – Professor Y. K. Yusuf and Kowa Party’s presidential candidate in the last elections – Mrs Remi Shonaiya. There were also in attendance representatives of the Ooni of Ife and other distinguished guests.

Now to you our distinguished readers, what do you really think Alhaji Lai Mohammed is trying to bring out of his analogy?

EducationStudent Cultists Surrender In OAU As Adeboye Ministers by Davo93(op): 1:23am On Jan 15, 2016
No fewer than 15 students of Obafemi Awolowo University who are involved in cultism have surrendered and renounced their membership in the course of the ministration of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E. A. Adeboye.

The 2016 edition of the annual University Thanksgiving Service and maiden Holy Ghost Night for the youths held yesterday at the new Crusade Ground of the institution and had Pastor Adeboye minster during the evening session. The minister who spoke on the topic: ‘The right hand of the Lord’ mentioned seven powerful characteristics of the right hand of God. He said the Power of God is qualitative, quantitative, defiles time, creative, defiles space, defiles the laws of nature and that it surpasses other powers.

Following the altar call where those willing to give their lives to Christ were called to the front space and prayed for, the cleric further made a call to students who have joined and are members any cultist group to come out and surrender to God and embrace the most powerful power which is that of God.

“If you have been deceived into joining a cult, now you know that there is power beyond ordinary powers and you want to say bye bye to the devil and come completely clean, I will love to pray for you tonight that any evil covenant you have entered be destroyed.” Adeboye said.

The cultists including male and female students numbering over fifteen (15) rushed to the space provided for them following the call and were prayed for by the minister. This edition of the programme is the fifth and the last for the Professor Bamitale Omole-led administration of the institution. A new Vice Chancellor is expected to emerge sometimes during the middle of the year.

EducationBuhari's Acknowledgement Of Varsity Decadence Vindicates Our Agitation -OAU SU by Davo93(op):
President Buhari's assertions on the unpalatable living and learning infrastructures in our Universities vindicate our agitations as a moral one, the Obafemi Awolowo University Students' Union (SU) has said.

The OAU Students' Union leadership in her new year message signed by the President, Omotayo Akande and the Secretary General, Oketooto Oluwaseun to the university community has described the state of the students' struggle for improved welfare condition to have now attained a remarkable feat owning to the confession statement of the Nigerian President on the state of the tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari had said during his maiden Presidential Media Chat on Thursday that he recognizes the extent to which infrastructures of the tertiary institutions in the country have gone bad. "The standard of tertiary institutions is really poor, I don't want students sitting on windows to take lectures." Buhari said

Buhari in his reaction to ways he plans to ameliorate the condition said he has earmarked N500b in the 2016 budget solely for infrastructural development in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The Students' Union has however declared her readiness to redirect agitation for better welfare conditions for students to a more national front and outside the four walls of the institutions. The Union leadership also called on the Minister of Education and the Finance Minister to ensure the Release of the earmarked N500b in the 2016 budget.

It will be recalled that the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University shut down the university on 5th December last year in the guise of a mid-semester break following students' demonstration for improved welfare conditions. The students have since taken to the social media displaying pictures of the worrisome state of living they are been subjected to. The media campaign has caught attention of many Nigerians including the President.

Honestly, PMB unapologetically spitted on the Judiciary yesterday and that chat reveals to what extent Democracy will still suffer in the name of corruption fight.

Once a dictator is always one. Where is pocketed Sagay now? The CJN has to do something else, the non-regard for the rule of law has just been commissioned by Buhari himself.

I think he needs to do some sacking cause he wasnt abreast with the happenings in his government. We are used to his inarticulate nature of speaking but little knowledge of his government workings is a no no.

I also think he was too rash and undiplomatic with his replies to the Igbo marginalization issue and the question on kanu was emotionally and poorly ansswered. He still cuts a dictatorial image and needs to work on that. MHO
