No fewer than 9,094 first degree students of Obafemi Awolowo University will be graduated tomorrow.

Addressing a press conference as part of programmes to mark the institution’s 40th convocation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of OAU, Professor Bamitale Omole hinted that “the Senate of the university has approved the graduation of 9,094 first degree graduates drawn from 13 faculties in the institution.”

According to him, “the breakdown include “127 students, who made first class honours, 2,360 and 4,256 students with second class upper and lower divisions respectively, while 1,232 made third class, just as 123 would graduate with ordinary pass.”

Professor Omole reacting to the performance, represented by the chairman of ceremonial committee, Prof. Titi Kuku, announced automatic scholarship for first class graduating students in the institution, adding that some of them may be given jobs at their respective faculties as graduate assistants.

Revolutionary greetings to all and sundry in the South West Zone, Osun state, Ife community and the generality of Great Ife Students on a successful host of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR for a special meeting with the Council of Obas in South West.

The leadership of the Students’ Union is appreciative of the listening character of the President as well as the efforts of individuals who facilitated the meeting with the President. It is imperative at this point to relay the product of the discussion with the President. The Speaker of the SRC addressed the President and submitted the protest letter which he personally received and gave assurances that the major issue in the letter – increment in fees is going to be addressed holistically in no long time as there are other schools that are affected. He committed himself to address welfare issues that affect OAU specifically.

Although some self-centered and politically-sponsored individuals attempted to unleash their demonic resolutions to deter and dissuade the union leaders from making pressing demands that will enhance the welfare of Great Ife students on campus, to make necessary demands for the reversal of fees and the reinstatement of some of our suspended students from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. On his way out, the president stepped out to the cheers of the students, receiving a lot of applause from the entirety of Great Ife students and commuters having heard that he had committed himself on the increment.

Meanwhile, just as the Union President conveyed to His Excellency, we again implore the president to stick to his promise, as a man of honour and integrity, as Great Ife students are in great anticipation and expectance. The cheers you received today at the time you were leaving were premised on the fact that we believed you will address the increment immediately. Mr President, the reversal of increased fees should also be extended to all Federal Universities and pump funds into education in the interest of the country.

However, we condemn the attitude of some individuals who portrayed themselves as elements of frustration and cheap political tools. Through this medium, we warn them to stay away from OAU campus as they are not unknown to the leadership of the union. We maintain our ground as Intellectual Fighters for Emancipation and not as uncoordinated confusionists and anarchists.

The leadership of the Union is very much undistracted in the maximization of this opportunity to solve the myriad of problems confronting Great IFE students. We also remain committed to the execution of our proposed projects and the completion of ongoing ones – Angola and Mozambique hall water projects, Great IFE app, Union website, and buses for campus shuttle, union hostel, among others.

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University today protested during the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan's visit.

Some students who were gathered at Oduduwa Hall as early as 9:00am where the President was meeting the traditional rulers chanted 'Ole ole'(thiefs) at them. The students carrying various placards displaying several inscriptions protesting increment in school fees and victimization of students chanted anti-Jonathan songs uncontrollably.

Every attempt by the Students' Union president, Comrade Ibikunle Isaac to calm and address the students proved abortive as he was booed and sachets were thrown at him in an attempt to stop him.

Protesting students got more aggressive as the meeting ended and security operatives tried to clear the way for Mr President's convoy to leave, the roads were blocked and students refused to be moved by fierce looking security officers that were fully armed to the teeth.

Ibikunle, president of the Students' Union who eventually blamed the protesting students for their non-coordination revealed he was able to submit a Protest Letter detailing the hardship and problems on campus to the President before his exit.

Some people have suggested that unfortunate turn of events has a political undertone because Osun State is an APC stronghold.

Politics / Boko Haram Emerged From The Fallout Of Religion Manipulation –Falana by Davo93(m): 8:48am On Nov 13, 2014
http://www.oaupeeps.com/2014/11/boko-haram-emerged-from-fallout-of.html

One of the leading human right activists in Nigeria and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Femi Falana has blamed the emergence of the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram on the manipulations of Religion by the Nigerian leaders.

Speaking at The 7th Annual Emeritus Professor D. A Ijalaye, SAN Distinguished Personality Lecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University which also doubled as the 50th Service Anniversary to celebrate the Nigerian first Emeritus Professor of Law who has achieved greatly both in his Law profession and academics, Femi Falana pointed accusing fingers at the Political leaders in the country who has introduced religion greatly into the secular constitution of the nation.

In the course of his lecture delivery, he pointed out that the Islamic sect was coined out to serve religious purposes until the then Governor of Borno state, Ali Modu-Sheriff sought the support of the Group during the 2003 general election which in turn promised them a place in his Government which he eventually fulfilled.

He pin-pointed a deal gone-sour between the former governor and the sect which eventually led to the invasion of the colony of the sect by the Nigerian Army during the Late President Yar’Adua regime which resulted in the murder of the leader of the sect as the genesis of the sect's fatality. Just immediately after then, the sect declared war on the nation and unleashed terror on her citizens.

Falana who lamented the current security state of the nation blamed President Jonathan for going ahead with plans to declare his intention to seek re-election some hours after scores of students were killed in a blast in Yobe. He however urged Great Ife students to take their future by their own hands as the general election draws nearer. "A threat to the people of the North East is a threat to all of us", he submitted.

The annual Personality Lecture organised by the Equity Chamber, Obafemi Awolowo University had the big wigs in the Law profession and outside present including Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the governor of The State of Osun who was represented by his Special Adviser on Legal Matters; Hon. Justice Amina Adamu Augie, JCA, CON, the President of the National Industrial Court; the Dean Faculty of Law and many others.

Do you remember Yomade Balogun? or the #SaveYomade campaign? If not, you can read this "Save Me From Death" -OAU Student Cries. Yomade cried out sometimes in July/August and pleaded for assistance from Great Ife students and Nigerians over her ailing health.

We are very happy to inform you that Yomade is now doing very fine. In a message she sent across to her friends and helpers from India (as the Google locator indicated), she appreciated everyone that heeded to her cry and came to her rescue during her dying period. She also announced her birthday to be tomorrow. The message reads;

"I am beyond grateful. My heart is filled with joy. God has poured the oil of gladness upon my soul. Words cannot express my gratitude. He made a way where there seems to be no way. He reminded me everyday that I am not alone in my struggles. In the midst of the trials he raised men and women whom I remain eternally grateful to. A big thank you to you all who heard my cry for help and answered, may God in his faithfulness never leave you. I pray that God's blessing will not depart from your dwellings. As I celebrate my birthday tomorrow I am reminded that all of you made it possible in Good health. And today's success wouldn't have been possible without u all. Thank you all. I love you all so very much. God bless you."

This is another lesson for ardent and dogmatic politicians' supporters who can do anything (infact some can die) for their preferred choice. The script been played goes beyond how it started sour... THE RAPED AND THE RAPISTS
“When people see a problem, they often reach for the easiest solution: pass a law. That doesn’t always work out, because force rarely changes things for the better, and that’s what those “laws” really are, just exercises of force.”

Over the years on this campus, many rape cases have been reported and dealt with in ways both commendably prudent and abysmally unforeseeable. The recent one is no exception. And we all duly know the attitude of the entire student populace towards this perversion irrespective of the guilty party.

It is true that it is a tradition to deal with criminals – however, not suspects – but convicts, found guilty by a court of law, or a trial jury. In fact, the resolution of the maddening mob at dusk on Monday, 27th October, as an aftermath of a previous day being Sunday, 26th, was a clear misplacement of the scientific maximum shishsi (SMS); it was practically a deviation towards inhumanity and self-driven torture.

We would not peel the bark of the seed now. We would rather postulate the incidence from the views of all the parties one at a time. And first, we begin with the accused.

THE STORY FROM THE POINT OF THE ACCUSED
According to the accused, in a recorded audio of an interrogative session moderated in Fajuyi Hall Secretariat, he said he deserved anything that would be done to him having realized his egregious act.

“What actually happened was that the girl came to my house yesterday… you know it’s a normal thing… a normal boy should get to say babe… and she says no! I was now like... why not (if she were here she could testify to it that we were like playing). At a point, she got up and said I want to go and I replied baby you are not going anywhere, we will do this ‘thing’… then she hit me on the head with a bottle of malt then I raped her. ”

The man, who expressed himself under duress, revealed that he is not based in Ife but only comes to Ife to ‘play’ while he resides with an uncle in Kaduna. He also claimed to have known the student since her Pre-degree days (tapping his fingers to even express certainty in time frame).

When asked if he actually beat the lady, the accused replied, questioning the possibility of raping and yet beating that same individual. He also confirmed that he didn’t use protection but never released in her.

Meanwhile he said he had threatened the lady before she reacted using a bottle against him; he had slapped her and actually hit her.

OUR IMPARTIAL OPINION
On the one hand, some sincere confessions have been made by the suspect. He confessed, but he was yet subject to so much savageness. He could better still have been handed over to the Police. It is a state crime that should take critical measures. It is only hardened suspects of high tendencies of being the actual criminal that are brutalized and clobbered to such lengths.

Once confession, then the law holds. On the other hand, while the audio was clearly decomposed; one prominent investigative tool was the controvertible proposition by a so called activist who put it to the suspect in a challenging manner as one who rapes, and such act being confirmed by his parents, and he could not deny.

By this time, it was no more an interrogation of a suspect but the castigating of a caught-in-the-act criminal treated with palliating measures. He was concurrently slapped and whipped while being questioned – forcing words from him. Apparently, one of the interrogators pleaded fairness and patience before any upshot. The voice, inferring from a similar case last year, exclaimed that the case be dealt with amicably. In fact, it was said that the man seemed stupid and time should be taken to study his stupidity.

But following the spontaneous response of students and the palpable rendition of their vindication of the victim’s (the girl’s) cry, there unfolds an impeccable picturesque orchestration of two rapists. While the suspect is taken as one by the generality of students, the crowd that echoed their voices which instigated a more fierce condition for the former are a second identified rapist.

We do not seek to plead his case. For no human with a boundless interwoven stream of blood-strings running through their veins should. However, logic must be consulted and employed when we battle issues such as this. To this end, has anyone thought it up why the school authority denied involvement in this incidence or why the Students' Union would traverse relations in the matter and disavow participation with the case? Well, we see that side attraction as a story for another time.

Insofar as we here pitch a stand of plain propositions and thought-while considerations, let it be known that we can never justify the beast’s actions, say a consequence of insanity, intoxication or psychological imbalance because this would further dent his already-tarnished image. We can never support this indecorous deed. We vehemently discredit it. And we opine the most suitable verdict be passed – even at this pendulous moment.

This is so because we can infer that this rapist is an individual with the four most important faculties of the human mind; syllogism, will, consciousness and control. We perceive he is deemed a moral person; not an amoral. To that end, he is responsible for all his reasoning, choices, decisions and actions under any circumstance as long as he is free and not exposed to any form of coercion or threat. Raping is a human act, not an act of human; consequently, no perpetrator of this denigrating perpetration should ever go unsullied.

He should serve punishment for being an insensate and preposterous being. And we surmise the possibility of his dilatory dilemma into a world of self-loath. He has indeed deprived himself, consciously and unconsciously, the virtue of benignity. Ergo, he is unworthy to be christened a human. He has lost his claim to the highest level of gregarious grandeur. He, considering all clemency and subtlety, at least, deserves an upside-down crucifixion.

And irrespective of his stance or the stability of his cognitive reasoning, he is a rapist though not caught in the act, confessed and treated otherwise; one that under accommodating circumstances could have been adjudged more fairly if the reverse had been the case; one who could have controlled his sexual inclinations, one who could have suppressed the beast that lies within him.

Nonetheless, he has tergiversated from the realm of a culprit; he has now become a victim; a subject to the most un-constituted abasement. Stripped of his liberty. Deprived of his pro-soiled self-esteem. Tried by a mob and not the law. Tried before an unapologetic crowd. Convicted in the face of imminent lynching and presented guilty. He has become the second person to be raped in two days. But now it is not of his sexual disposition but of his claim to rights of fair and unprejudiced hearing. Not of his personality but his humanity. And the aroused mob, a collective of blood-seeking rapists determined to see him pay for his crime and his consummate taint.

The girl is a human. She is a daughter. She is a sister. She is a friend. She is a lady. And like any of the afore-mentioned she must be protected. But, she is not feeble-minded. Do we then subscribe blame to the girl and berate her waywardness – if that even in the most lucid terms represents her despicable role in the scenario or should we dub her a victim of misplaced circumstances?

For we strive to signpost that to an understandable level, she should explicate her imbued faculty of discretion in every ramification. And even if ignorant of such expectation, we seek yet to uphold that she is responsible for the company she keeps and the decisions she makes because this is a university milieu and every student irrespective of age is presumed an adult.

As a result, we as a collective, bar all reasons and evidence, move to castrate such individuals who believe the girl outright innocent and calumniate blindly the superfluously overboard engagement of the man. Let us not forget it takes two to tango and logically this could be an instance of un-premised principle of cause and effect. Nevertheless, we do not aver her predicament apt for her actions. No, we do not. At this juncture, it is cognizant to note that our investigations continue and we shall unearth all that appear hidden on this issue.

We heretofore induce these revenge-seekers are constituents of primordial backgrounds hampering the majestic rationale of OAU Populace in its entirety. We deduce hereby that they are amenable tools of impaired vision led by an overlord driven by cogno-emotional affections for her fellow female folk. We deduce they are flag-bearers of unfounded sanctimony that cannot come out boldly to defend their righteousness.

Yet, we should construct another edifice of intellectual appraisal of this mob’s swift response. They did not hesitate to heed the lamentation of one of their own. They arose, as a unified advocating few, irrespective of relations or contemporary status quo of the political family – the Students Union, to fight the culprit and vindicate the first victim. They flaunted the pride of protocols to retrieve an almost petered-out dignity of their veiled colleague.

However, justice infers equality before the law and humans; a just and an unprejudiced treatment of cases and a guided review of situations before a final verdict is given. Alas, this is not justice. This is an injustice of the highest pedestal. This is only a guise in the mould of hackneyed stipulation subjected to sketchy perceptions of self-appointed activists and judges. The questions still unanswered are: are they animated activists or solitary sentimentalists, are they famed feminists or infamous ‘fame-inists’?

We shall not point fingers yet and we shall neither stick them deep in the enclaves of our pockets. We shall not raise quizzical eye-brows now but we shall blink our visages towards the unwarped truth soon. For if this persists, sooner than anticipated, a graver act of dehumanization looms. Then, we would raise our voice – not in panic – but to judge. And believe us, when we wield that sword of judgment in your direction as we endeavour to assert the strength of our pen, it might not bleed you but it most inferentially might shave your beard.

Politics / OAU Students Appeal To Aregbesola, Osun CP Over Colleagues Suspension by Davo93(m): 1:26pm On Oct 25, 2014
http://www.oaupeeps.com/2014/10/oau-students-appeal-to-aregbesola-osun.html

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University have appealed to the school management, Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola and the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Maishanu, over the reinstatement of their suspended colleagues.

The authorities of OAU had suspended eight students of the school over allegation of misconduct, claiming that the students would be reinstated after the completion of a police investigation.

Students Union leaders in the school were also placed on rustication on probation allegedly for their roles during the protests against fee hike.

The suspended students are Pele Obasa, Ibirogba Samuel, Ademuwagun Johnson, Sanyaolu Oluwajuwon, Oluwole Olubanji, Benjamin Olusiji, Adabale Olamide, Abiodun Abimbola.

However, during a press conference, President of the SU, Ibikunle Isaac wondered why the school management suspended the students without any investigative report.

He explained that the police seems not to be helping matters, lamenting that they were harassed when they visited the Osun State Police Command to lodge complaints.

He said, "Currently, all Executives of the Students Union are under probationary rustication for their involvement in the struggle against hike in fee and 8 other students are on indefinite suspension for their principled defense of the collective interest of students and demand for justice.

"We re-affirm our believe that this courageous students are not criminals.
We strongly appeal to the university authority, Osun State Governor and CP to ensure the freedom of these students. This is because our management in the letter given to the suspended students said they will only be reinstated after an investigation conducted by the police has been concluded. We are still in darkness on whether or not a case is actually with the police but we know that the governor also has power over a case like this. We urge him to intervene and ensure our students freedom.
"We have also tried other diplomatic means as we have written to the Governing Council, ASUU and our various intermediaries to ensure immediate reinstatement and withdrawal of charges against students union leaders and activists. This approach we believe will be productive."

Meanwhile, one of the suspended students, Juwon has charged OAU management and commissioner of police among other to court to challenge his suspension.

Okay o, borda Davo, I hear you.
I know that as a journalist, you're supposed to report the news and not influence it. However - since you're a Great Ife student - may I suggest you guys try to talk to your SUG? They don't have to follow a script that's been used with minimal success for so many years. I believe they should give more room for input from the so-called "eficos". Otherwise, "aluta Ife o ni yato si ti LASU"* no matter what they sing to the contrary.

*sorry to my friends from LASU. I'm not hating on your fine school. That's just how our students sing it.
I perfectly understand you sir. It is just unfortunate that things turned out the way it went the other time. The Ibikunle (Students' Union President) I have been studying and observing since he assumed office is someone who arguably does not like the confrontation style of agitation. Some other factors led to the protest that eventually led to the shut down of the school which I was not able to discuss with you the other time.

The good thing now is that we are back in school but some students have been rusticated, these ones need to be 'forgiven' and allowed to continue with the rest of us on campus.

E tun ti bere.
If you remember, I engaged you Davo93 on your ill-advised approach to the recent aluta, but noooo, you knew better . You guys are just too smart for your own good. Has everything I warned you about in our brief discussion happened or not
Good day sir! It looks like you are having a wrong picture of whom you are engaging. I did not coordinate the Aluta(not a leading member of any of the Students' Union organ), however, as a conscious Great Ife student, I have my reservations about all that transpired before, during and after the aluta period which I may not be interested in divulging here at the moment. I am a Campus Journalist, by the virtue of this, I have the privilege to put up news items of things that happen including the current suit filed by Juwon against the management.

And you know what pains me the most: the really poor students for whom you should have been fighting are now struggling on their own. While you, Davo probably paid your fees a long time ago, do you know that I still had to help a student with his fees just this last week?? I daresay I've personally helped far more students than you ended up doing with you silly aluta, never mind the fact you got a few months of their (your) lives wasted in the process.
Sir, I am glad you are one of the not many among your colleagues that are ready to hear the plight of indigent students and ready to assist them. Mucha Gracias!

One of suspended students of the Africa's most beautiful campus, Sanyaolu Oluwajuwon a.k.a Comrade Juwon has dragged the management of Obafemi Awolowo University to the Law Court over what he felt as unjustifiable and illegal indefinite suspension of his studentship.

Comrade Juwon had earlier on the 16th September, 2014 filed a suit at the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, the capital of The State of Osun challenging his suspension. The Court which sat today for the first time on the suit could not do much as the case was adjourned till November 13, 2014. This was based on the objection raised by the Defense Counsels that their client jut got the writ of summon yesterday.

Apart from the Students' Union leaders of the citadel who are currently on probation, eight students including Comrade Juwon were suspended immediately after the students' struggle against the obnoxious hike in school fees on the basis ranging from the allegation of "Abduction" of a certain Angels who was the returning Electoral Officer for the Union Elective offices last year to failure to appear before the Investigative Panel that investigated the matters concerning the school fees increment protest.

Other students suspended by the management include Olusoji Benjamin (Mandela), Ibirogba Samuel (Sammy), Abimbola Abiodun (Anchor), Olubanji Oluwole (Engels), Adabale Olamide (Olamide), Ademuwagun Johnson(Johnson), Pete Obasa (Chocomilo). Also, Olawale Ogunruku, who has been suspended since 2011 as a result of his action during the acceptance fee increment by the Faborode-led administration remains suspended.

Just immediately after the case adjournment, men of the Nigerian Police Force arrested the Students' Union president, Ibikunle Isaac Motunrayo and the Secretary General of the Union, Shittu Olatayo and other students and detained them at the Police Headquarters in Oshogbo for no obvious reasons. They were later released hours later following the intervention of some other persons. Speaking after his release, Ibikunle stated that "we remain undaunted in the struggle to reinstate the Suspended 9".

A call also put to the Police headquarters in Oshogbo to ascertain why they were detained proved abortive as at the time of writing this report.
