Summary

Ms Mayfield's sentencing on Friday brought her trial to conclusion, but the separate case in which Allen Onyema and an Air Peace official are charged with fraud and money laundering remains.

There are two different cases in the same court.

Ms Mayfield had a plea bargain

She was charged in 2019, and she initially pleaded “not guilty” to all eight charges at the District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta.

But she changed her plea to plead guilty to one of the charges in June, after entering into a plea agreement that saw the US government drop the seven remaining charges against her.

The law under which she was charged provided for maximum five years jail term for the offence she pleaded guilty to.

Following her guilty plea, her lawyer filed for a variance of sentence on 13 October, begging to be sentenced to a probated sentence or what is called supervised release, instead of imprisonment.

PREMIUM TIMES reported earlier on Friday that the US government, in its response, agreed to a lower limit of sentence range, which includes house detention for six months.

At the sentencing on Friday, the judge, Eleanor Ross, after discussing the pre-sentence report with lawyers to the parties, and listening to Ms Mayfield briefly, imposed “a total of THREE (3) YEARS of probation” on her.

The judge also ordered “$4,000 fine (the interest is waived); $100 special assessment; and additional requirements.”

He also gave her limited appellate rights, and noted that she was ready on bail.


Mayfield’s case closed, Mr Onyema’s charges remain

Ms Mayfield’s sentencing on Friday brought her trial to conclusion, the judge said.

But the separate case in which Mr Onyema and an Air Peace official are charged remains.

Mr Onyema and Air Peace Limited’s Head of Administration and Finance, Ejiroghene Eghagha, still have 36 charges of fraud and money laundering pending against them since 2019 at the same court.

Prosecutors said Mr Onyema engaged, Ms Mayfield, a bartender and nightclub dancer, as a manager for his Atlanta, Gerogia-based Springfield Aviation Company LLC in 2016.

The Air Peace founder set up the firm to, purportedly, “specialise in the wholesaling, trading, and sale of commercial aircraft and parts”.

But the US government said, Mr Onyema engaged Ms Mayfield to enter into aviation-related contracts on behalf of Springfield Aviation, despite her lack of education, training, or licensing in the review and valuation of aircraft and aircraft components.

In her plea bargain that she filed in June, Ms Mayfield confessed to signing and submitting fake documents enabling a $20 million credit disbursement from Nigeria to US bank accounts, purportedly for Air Peace to buy five Boeing 737 passenger planes from Springfield Aviation.

The fake documents allegedly submitted by the conspirators included fabricated purchase agreements, bills of sale, and valuation.

Both Air Peace, a major Nigerian commercial airline, and the purported aircraft seller, Springfield Aviation, are owned by My Onyema.

Prosecutors alleged that the aircraft referenced in the letters of credit and other fake documents submitted with respect to the deal were already owned by Air Peace. None of them ever belonged to Springfield Aviation, the prosecution said

They also alleged that Mr Onyema founded and used Springfield Aviation “to facilitate large transfers of funds from his Nigerian bank accounts to the United States.”

Mr allegedly moved about $15 million from Springfield Aviation’s account with a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Atlanta, Georgia, to his personal savings account with the same bank in 27 transactions in 2017.

The flagged 27 transactions took place between 22 March and 29 November 2017.

Mr Onyema and Air Peace Limited’s Head of Administration and Finance, Ejiroghene Eghagha, are facing 36 charges at the District Court in Atlanta, in connection with the alleged $20 million fraudulent scheme.

Among the charges preferred against them are bank fraud, credit application fraud and money laundering.

Each of the flagged 27 online transfers carried out by Mr Onyema within nine months in 2017 involved values ranging from $100,000 to $1 million.

The transactions totalled $15.14 million.

Each of the 27 transactions stands alone as a charge of money laundering.

Under the money laundering charges, prosecutors alleged that both Messrs Onyema and Eghagha, aided and abetted by others, “attempted to engage in a monetary transaction” involving a financial institution, with effect on “interstate and foreign commerce”.

They alleged that each of the transactions involved more than $10,000 “criminally derived from unlawful activities” including bank fraud and credit application fraud.

In November 2020, the government of the state of Georgia dissolved Springfield Aviation over its failure to file its annual registration and/or failure to maintain a registered agent or registered office in this state.

Mr Onyema denied all the allegations of fraud levelled against him when the charges against him were unveiled by the US government in 2019.

Although he said the charges did not reflect his personality as a business owner, he and his co-defendant have yet to appear in court.

All my previous visas which the instructions says colour photocopy of previous visas, this guy pulled everything out and returned to us that only Schengen and UK visas is what the Consulate requires

My visas to SA, NZL, Australia, UAE, Japan, Turkey etc were pulled out by this guy

Once Application is forwarded to the consulate, they can reach out to you for additional information.

That's how it works for most countries, even UK, Australia, Canada etc

i didnt include my company account it was only my personal account i tag as salary account
and i submited my company bank reference letter

In my case, the company I own is sponsoring.

There's a letter I attached stating this categorically.

That's this family trip is being sponsored solely by the company. Hence, Company bank statement was attached with a letter from the bank affirming that I am the sole signatory.

On this basis, I felt Why should I add personal statement?

I may be wrong on this or write.

But the TLS contact staff categorically put incomplete documents (no personal statement)

I saw it and I was like, why would you do this, despite explaining the reason, not because it's not available.

He then said, if the embassy wants it, they will ask.

My own advice is that you should send it to the embassy via any means and tag your application no the one they sent to you after submittion

I thought about this, but I was like, what if the case officer feels it was deliberately omitted and then rule against my application.

The reference number is with me, which is what was sent to the embassy.

I can send soft copy via email and also do hard copy drop off myself at Walter Carrington on Monday.

Just worried about the reaction of the officer.

Guys I need advice please.
A very serious one

Recall I said I only added the Statement of account of my company as sponsor, and did add personal statement for myself or wife.

TLS then wrote incomplete documents on the application because of this, but they already sent to the embassy yesterday Friday.

I called the customer care of TLS and they confirmed they sent that way and put incomplete documents on it which the consulate would see.

I further asked since it was an error, I can get the documents send via email to the consulate or have it hand delivered on Monday morning. They said I should not worry, that if the case officer needs those documents, they would send a mail to me to bring.

My concern is that, what if the officer decides not to even ask me and take decision that it's not available?

My question to you guys is this:

What would you advise?
Should I send? Or hope that the consulate would ask?

I've been seriously worried since Thursday.

Anyone with similar experience should post in this regard.

This journey started in October 5th 2019 when the GIANT in the pay tv industry, DStv used EFcc to shut down 9 indigenous pay tv cable companies in Nigeria just because they want to enjoy Monopoly of the industry with regards to sports channels especially live football matches which is the most selling power for pay tv companies.

To refresh our memories, the companies shut down are (1) Metrodigital in PH. (2) CTL in PH and all thier branches nation wide. (3) CMTV in PH (4) Hashtronics in Kano (5) ABG-Metro in Kano and Kaduna (6) WorldLink Comm. In Warri (7) MCL in ABA ( Highland Comm in Ibadan .

It should be of note that many lost thier jobs and means of livelihood and most are still in the saturated labour market till date because a company want to have monopoly so as to maximize profit by high subscription.

Only one company took this as a challenge while the others felt it will be too much of a hassle to fight the GIANT and get victory for Nigerians. We went to court well armed with the amended NBC (National Broadcasting Commission) code that specifically prohibits Exclusivity of Premium Channels including football channels, by stating that any broadcaster who is licenced in Nigeria to air these football matches *SHALL* sublicense to any other at an agreed rate, but the GIANT refused, This code was taken to the Fed. High Court for interpretation where the GIANT swore to an oath they are not the owner of the channels even though the code did not say "owners but licencee" base on this the court in it's wisdom though agreed with the provisions of the code but can't order who did not have to give what they don't have, our Signal came on air waiting for the owners to show forth and the owners finally wrote us agreeing they are the owner and that we have no right and permission to broadcast these channels this is after getting the first judgment that rely on the affidavit that they are not the owner, on this strength we appealed the High Court Judgement in 2021 hence our Signal went off air again.

And in July 2022, the appeal court gave it's Judgment setting aside the High Court Judgement and Specifically ordered NBC to implement the section other code which means giving directive to whoever have that right to sublicence, we celebrated this with great hope and we commenced putting in a place technically to start but our hopes were dashed again with delays to the carrying out of the court order. We started another fight from July when we got the Judgment till we got that which the court says yesterday and we are ready to go without any hindrance and even if they want to appeal to Supreme Court which we are not aware of yet as we will never give up, this one is obeyed and gives us the right to do our business without hindrance so that Nigerians can watch live football matches with no holes in thier pockets.

THIS IS THE STORY OF THE JOURNEY SO FAR.

My company that I own is sponsoring and I added statement from the company, with bank reference confirming me as sole signatory, as well as sponsorship letter for all 3 of us.

unfortunately, did not add my personal bank account and that of my wife.

Felt really bad

Company statement is in excess of 23m but I just hope these guys will not use this error against all 3 of us

What really interests me about this erratic incident on board the British Airways Boeing 777 long haul plane on October 7, 2022 is that the "Business Insider" article published on October 23, 2022 incorrectly credited The SUN tabloid of the UK (which published the incident on October 18, 2022) with being the first to report or originally publish the story. This is a clear case of journalistic falsehood!


"The Cable" (a Nigerian investigative journalism publication) was the FIRST among the 3 publications (whose web links are listed on this thread by you) to accurately report the British Airways incident on October 9, 2022 (2 days after the London flight incident).

The Cable also listed the popular
Nigerian musician Zlatan Ibile as being one of those on board the plane, and Zlatan Ibile and some others confirmed the flight incident.


The idiotic deportee entered the UK illegally from Turkey (but his nationality was NOT stated) according to The Cable, and he was placed on board the plane which was headed for Lagos from London. No doubt, he will still be deported.

This is the main REASON why we keep telling people to follow the legal travel options and rules before "japaing" from Nigeria or any other country to prevent being deported, and then having to get erratic and hysterical like this deportee after spending millions in local currencies to travel abroad. Period.



Lessons Learned:
Future deportees worldwide MUST be given purgatives or made to relieve themselves 48-72 hours before their flights depart by the immigration folks. Only liquid drinks must be taken by deportees
NOT solid meals.
