The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Akwa Ibom State has pledged support for President Muhammadu Buhari, while also commending the state governor, Udom Emmanuel. The state chairman, Paul Ekpo, made this known while reading a communique issued at the end of a meeting attended by party leaders in Uyo, the state capita, weekend. The party congratulated Mr. Buhari on his election and said the PDP in Akwa Ibom State will support the administration. “In spite of our political differences, we pledge our support for the success of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration,” Mr. Ekpo, who read the communiqué, said. The party commended the state governor, Mr. Emmanuel, for what it described as, “the bold steps he has taken to position the state on the path of continuous growth, prosperity and development”. It also congratulated the former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, on his emergence as the Senate Minority Leader and urged him to use his new office to provide quality leadership in the Senate. “Akwa Ibom remains a PDP stronghold yesterday, today and tomorrow as evidenced in the pattern of voting in the past 16 years of democratic rule in the country,” the communiqué said. “The election of Udom Emmanuel represents the collective will of our people and, therefore, remains sacrosanct and inviolable.” It insisted that the PDP will stand by Mr. Emmanuel to ensure that he achieves his vision as encapsulated in his 5-Point Agenda for the state. Mr. Emmanuel said the government has within its three-month stay laid the foundation for industrial revolution in the state and also invested in power generation, human capacity development and youth empowerment, among others. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/south-south-regional/189052-akwa-ibom-pdp-pledges-support-for-buhari.html |

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside a Chadian army camp on Wednesday, according to security sources who blamed the attack on the Boko Haram sect, a terror group that Chad and other countries in West Africa are pursuing militarily. “The two kamikazes tried to get into the camp but were pushed back by the guard so they detonated themselves at the entrance,” an officer at the Kaiga Ngouboua base in the Lake Chad region told Reuters. The officer added that a suspected accomplice had been arrested. Nobody except the bombers was killed. Chad’s capital N’Djamena will host the command centre of a 8,700-strong multinational force to fight Boko Haram, military chiefs from Nigeria, Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin agreed on Saturday. 10 people are due to go on trial in N’Djamena later on Wednesday accused of involvement in a series of deadly attacks in the city in June and July. http://thenationonlineng.net/suspected-boko-haram-militants-attack-chads-army-camp/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday accused past governments of encouraging corruption in the oil sector. Buhari said he was disappointed at the way Nigeria’s oil industry had been handled since he left office as a former petroleum minister and as a military Head of State in 1985. Buhari was quoted in a statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari as making this observation during a meeting he had with a delegation of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The president specifically heaped the blame on governments for the current situation in which Nigeria is forced to spend billions of naira annually on subsidies for petroleum products. He said he was sure that there would not have been any need for the huge subsidies currently being paid to importers if the development of the country’s domestic refining capacity and petroleum products distribution network had kept pace with national demand. “They (past administrations) allowed the infrastructure to collapse so that their cronies can steal by bringing in refined products from overseas,” Shehu quoted the President as saying. He therefore urged the chairman and members of the RMAFC, who availed him of their view on petroleum subsidy payments, to come up with more humane proposals to rescue ordinary Nigerians from what he described as the “wicked manipulation” of the country’s oil industry by corrupt operators. The President said that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the Nigerian Ports Authority and other MDAs, which previously relied on the laws establishing them to retain all or part of the revenues collected by them, did so illegally and must now comply with the Nigerian Constitution by paying all revenues into the Federation Account. Buhari was also said to have flayed the RMAFC for approving what he called “excessive remunerations” for some political office holders. http://dailypost.ng/2015/08/26/obasanjo-jonathan-others-promoted-corruption-in-the-oil-sector-buhari/?wt=2

The Department of State Services has charged the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.) to court for alleged illegal possession of firearms. The service, in a statement by a DSS official, Tony Opuiyo, on Monday in Abuja, said Dasuki was charged to court for owning firearms without licence. The DSS had on July 16, 2015 carried out search operations on the ex-NSA’s residences in Asokoro, Abuja and Sokoto, where its operatives claimed to have recovered seven high calibre rifles including magazines and military gears at the houses located at 13, John Khadya Street, and 46, Nelson Mandela Street, both at Asokoro, Abuja, and 3 Sabon Birni Road, Gwiwa Area, Sokoto, Sokoto State. The agency also recovered 12 new vehicles, including five bullet-proof cars from Dasuki’s house, the ownership of which could not be explained by the embattled former NSA, and which investigators believed must have been purchased with proceeds of corruption. The DSS had claimed that it searched Dasuki’s homes “based on credible intelligence linking the immediate past NSA with alleged plans to commit treasonable felony against the Nigerian state.” But in the Monday statement, the service said it charged him to court based on evidence so far obtained. The evidence relates to possession of firearms without licence, punishable under section 27(i)(a)(i) of the Firearms Act Cap F28 LFN 2004. The statement partly read, “You may recall that on July 16, 2015, the Department of State Services carried out search operations on properties belonging to the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (retd.), in Abuja and Sokoto. “This action was necessitated by credible intelligence which linked him to acts capable of undermining national security. The search operations led to the recovery of large cache of arms and ammunition among other things and for which further investigation was conducted. “Consequently, on Monday 24, August, 2015, he was charged to court based on evidence so far obtained, but which relates to possession of firearms without licence punishable under section 27(i)(a)(i) of the Firearms Act Cap F28 LFN 2004.” The service said Dasuki’s arraignment was in line with democratic practice and “our avowed commitment to the rule of law, in which nobody is deemed to be above the law, no matter how highly placed in the society.” It added that the public would be duly informed as the matter progresses. Meanwhile, the Service said it had recommitted itself to the fundamental role of providing adequate security for all Nigerians to enable them to pursue their legitimate aspirations and businesses. http://www.punchng.com/news/dss-sues-sambo-for-illegal-possession-of-firearms/ |
