United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived Nigeria on Sunday to commemorate the bombing of UN’s headquarters by Islamist sect, Boko Haram and also to focus new attention on over 200 schoolgirls kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State by the ruthless extremists. Ki-moon will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, amid plans to launch a long-delayed regional offensive against the Islamic insurgents who have since pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. A UN statement says the leaders will discuss ways to counter violent extremism as well as human rights and climate change. Ban also will meet the Bring Back Our Girls group which demands government action to free 219 abducted schoolgirls held now for nearly 500 days. According to Associated Press, he will lay a wreath to mark the anniversary of the August 26, 2011 suicide car bombing that killed 21 people at the UN Nigeria headquarters in Abuja. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/08/23/ban-ki-moon-in-nigeria-to-mark-bombing-chibok-girls/ |

The Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, Shehu Sani, on Tuesday, distributed Army Recruitment Forms and PIN Codes to 190 youths in the seven Local Government Areas of his zone. While handing over the forms and personally filling out the PIN Codes from a computer to beneficiaries at the Conference Centre of the National Teachers Institute, NTI, in Kaduna, Mr. Sani said the exercise is a gesture to help unemployed youths from poor families with the forms PIN Code in order to become useful to the society and to directly contribute in bringing lasting peace and security in the country. He said: “20 forms will be distributed to youths from each of the seven LGAs namely: Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Chikun, Igabi, Giwa and Birnin Gwari, while 50 others will be distributed to other parts of the state.” He expressed his concern that in the past, youths especially from his zone could not make tangible contribution against current security challenges in the country, because they have missed recruitment opportunities in Nigerian Custom Service, Police, Nigerian Army, Immigration, NSCDC, Nigerian Prisons Service. “I have made it a priority that young men and women from my zone will never miss any opportunity of recruitment into any institution and organizations anymore. “So long as I am on this seat, no insect or idol can prevent you from achieving your goals of becoming useful to the society. “As a senator, I am in Abuja for you, I will always do whatever I can for you to have a future that Nigeria will be proud of. This is not a political gathering, but I have also provided transport and feeding for the candidates,” he told beneficiaries. He advised politicians especially in the north to emulate their counterparts in the south by assisting youths instead of giving then handouts. One of the beneficiaries, Sani Shehu, from Birnin Gwari LGA, who spoke on behalf of other beneficiaries, thanked the Senator for the good gesture and promised to be useful to the society. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nwest/188624-kaduna-senator-buys-army-recruitment-forms-for-190-youth.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

President Muhammadu Buhari vowed to ensure all the necessary logistics, and not only, for the forces to successfully fight Boko Haram insurgency. It should be recalled that Buhari has recently appointed new service chiefs and gave them a three-month period to deal with terrorism in the country. According to Vanguard, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd), the national security adviser, who spoke on behalf of the presidency while addressing air force officers in Yola, said: “I am telling you this, and you can take it as if it is coming from Mr President himself that you are going to be given everything you require, not only for the operations but for your personal welfare. This is an assurance I want to give you.” Air Commodore Dele Alonge, the director of air force public relations, commented on the aim of the NSA visit: “Against the background of the recent presidential directive to the service chiefs to defeat the Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) group in three-months, the NSA gave the purpose of the operational visit as one to enable his team assess the situation on ground and relate with the troops with a view to adequately identify and address observed challenges facing the troops.” Monguno praised the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for the improvements in the war against insurgency, having noted the aerial support provided to the ground troops. He also commended the patriotic staff and urged its members to remain resolved in the anti-Boko Haram battle. Following Buhari’s order to end terrorism in three months, the NAF deployed new aircraft and started heavy bombardment of Sambisa Forest, the notorious hideout of the militants. Alonge specified in his August 13 statement that technical upgrade and provision of additional platforms in the areas most affected by insurgency were in line with President Buhari’s directive. https://www.naij.com/521836-youll-given-everything-need-crush-boko-haram-buhari-military.html
