Politics › Nigerian Customs Threats Aggravate Rice Industry Woes by Dbrainiac1(op): 3:21pm On Jul 31, 2015
THE threat by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to close down The Intercontinental Lagos has been described as a sledgehammer approach to the ongoing dispute between the Service and large rice investors in the country.
The Public Relations Officer of the NCS. Wale Adeniyi had threatened a shut down of the hotel following the non-payment of retrospective duties by the hotel’s parent company, Milan Group.
Reacting to the threat, stakeholders say they are perplexed over NCS’ highhanded action which is blatantly against the rule since the investors have lodged cases in courts, and hence the justifiable claim that the action of NCS is outright subjudice, illegal and unauthorised
“The sealing-off of a global hospitality chain like The Intercontinental Lagos for no apparent legal non-compliance is likely to cause massive adverse effect on Nigeria’s image, apart from the acute embarrassment and inconvenience to its guests.
“In a highly debatable move, NCS is demanding retrospective duties from the rice investors for imports pertaining to 2014, while the investors have claimed that the quota allocations did not comply with stipulated regulations, issued late only by December and were also biased against bonafide investors,” according to the investors.
It would be recalled that following the confusion that trailed 2014 quotas, quotas for 2015 were also issued, cancelled and later re-issued.

Politics › Clash Kills 11 Militants, Three Militia by Dbrainiac1(op): 9:43am On Jul 29, 2015
Abuja - Three militia fighters and 11 Boko Haram militants have been killed in a clash in a village, a local resident and a member of the militia fighting alongside the army said Tuesday.
News of the clash came as military spokesman told AFP a new regional force tasked with fighting the jihadists should go into action very soon, though he did not specify when for tactical reasons.
"On Monday afternoon around 2:00 pm (1300 GMT), Boko Haram gunmen on motorcycles attacked our village," said Markus Yohana, a local militia member fighting the Islamists in Dille in Borno State.
"They killed three vigilantes and seized a car," he said, adding that soldiers ambushed the raiders as they tried to flee, killing 11.
Another local, Bitrus Damina, confirmed the account.
"Soldiers went after them and killed 11 of them in the bush," Damina said.
Boko Haram has stepped up its attacks since President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in in May, unleashing a wave of violence that has claimed 830 lives in just two months, even as a regional offensive launched in February has scored a string of victories.
The 8,700-strong Multi-National Joint Task Force, which will replace the regional offensive, is expected to be more efficient than the current alliance when it takes over the battle against a six-year insurgency that has killed some 15,000 people.
"Any moment from now, the operations or the Task Force will be manifest. In other words, we may not tell you (when it will commence), you will just see it," Nigeria's military spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade told AFP.
"The mission has been sectorised, various sector commanders have been briefed, the briefing is ongoing at different levels... the aspect of the Nigerian force that will be part of the Multinational Joint Task Force has been designated," Olukolade added.
The force will have its headquarters in Chadian capital N'Djamena, and a military source from Chad said offices have been set up in an army camp there for the new force's chief of staff.
President Buhari is set to visit Cameroon on Wednesday for the first time since he was sworn in, as well as Benin starting Saturday.
He has already visited Chad and Niger, which have also been suffered from Boko Haram's attacks.

The Nigerian Army said the sporadic shooting heard around Damaturu metroplolis on Tuesday was caused by one of its soldiers.
The explanation came in a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Sani Usman.
“The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and clarify that the sporadic firing heard in Damaturu this evening was a gross act of indiscipline on the part of a soldier who has already been arrested,” Usman said.
He, therefore, appealed to public, especially those residing in Damaturu, to remain calm and go about their normal business.

Politics › At Last, Kaduna’s ‘sambisa Forest’ Is Liberated by Dbrainiac1(op): 1:17am On Jul 26, 2015
Residents erupted in joyful noise, last Tuesday, as Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State emerged from his vehicle in Birnin Gwari -the beleaguered headquarters of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, LGA, of the state, about 120km west of Kaduna metropolis.
In the estimation of the people who had thronged there, El Rufai was a liberator. The reason was not far-fetched: They had been held under the pincer-grip of murderous gangsters for years. The gunmen had scoffed at the feeble attempts by the police and the military to chase them out.
But, that day, seated on the rain soaked ground before the governor and his entourage were nine half-stripped men, some with wide scars on their heads and parts of their exposed bodies – a signature of their violent trade. They were, according to official accounts, among the administrators of the reign of terror that had been unleashed on Birnin Gwari and a much larger area that borders four other states. Behind the suspected gangsters were the alleged evidence of their greed and criminality– about 50 cows.
The recovered cows, swathing flies with their tails, and unaware of the excitement around them, were just a fraction of the over 2,000 cows recovered from the suspected serial rustlers and their fleeing accomplices as would be later revealed in this story.
El Rufai had arrived the place with some state officials to ascertain the success of a joint security initiative arranged by him, in collaboration with the governments of Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger and Katsina states.

Politics › Eight Die In Nigeria From Toxic Fumes Inhalation by Dbrainiac1(op): 8:03pm On Jul 25, 2015
Eight people died from inhaling toxic fumes on Saturday and some 100 others were hospitalised after an accidental blast hit a water treatment plant near Jos in central Nigeria, local officials said.
A barrel of chlorine exploded in the Dogon Karfe plant in the south of Jos, releasing toxic chlorine vapour, regional spokesman Samuel Emmanuel Nanle said in a statement.
Governor Simon Lalong expressed his sympathy with the families of the eight victims, and wished the 101 survivors who were being treated in hospital a speedy recovery, the statement added.
The circumstances of the blast remain unclear though measures have been taken to “guard against future reoccurrence” of the incident, Nanle said.
The accident has not affected the water supply in the area, the statement said, adding that water from the mains remained “safe for human consumption”.
