PoliticsRecruitment Scandal Hits Immigration by Ddaji(op): 10:37pm On Dec 24, 2012

*Job slots offered to Jonathan’s mum, wife, others

*Reps ask Uzoma to stay action

A controversial recruitment exercise which allegedly favoured a section of the country is going on at the Nigerian Immigration Service with jobs slots being secretly allocated to top government officials, sources told Daily Trust.

This is happening just three months to the exit of Controller General of the service Mrs. Rose Chinyere Uzoma, who is accused of favouring her kinsmen from the Southeast in the distribution of the vacancies.

A source in the House of Representatives said already the committee on Federal Character has opened investigations and asked the Immigration service to suspend the exercise.

The source said Uzoma appeared before the House committee last week to defend accusations of failure to publicly advertise vacancies and giving undue favouritism to the Southeast.

Uzoma, according to the source, told the lawmakers that the service did not advertise the jobs so as not to unknowingly employ terrorists, but the lawmakers reminded her that even the Military and Police are advertising their vacancies in spite of the prevailing insurgency.

She also said she had already obtained approval from the Head of Service of the Federation to employ 4,560 people.

The committee therefore asked her to provide details of the present distribution of the Immigration work force based on state of origin.

A committee member said they found out that out of over 25,000 Immigration staff, Uzoma’s husband’s state of origin Imo has the highest number with 1,190; Kano has 350; Lagos has 400; while Sokoto has the least with 200.

The committee therefore ordered her to stay action on the recruitment until she provides details on how she intends to share out the slots, but with priority to be given to the states that at present have low representation in the service.

Daily Trust learnt that before the lawmakers tried to pull the brakes, Uzoma had already offered hundreds of job slots to top government functionaries, including the Presidency which is offered 250 slots, Jonathan’s mother 40 slots, First Lady 100 slots, Interior Minister Abba Moro 100 slots, two commissioners of the Immigration board 30 slots each, and the Federal Character Commission 250 slots.

A source said the Federal Character Commission was given those job slots for giving the Immigration service waiver on the advertisement of the vacancies.

Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati did not respond to text a message sent to him asking for his comments on the alleged offers of Immigration job slots to the Presidency and Jonathan’s mother and wife.

For its part, the Federal Character Commission, through its spokesman Usman Jimada, denied being compromised by the Immigration Service. Jimada added that the commission will continue to pursue its mandate of fair and equitable recruitment in a manner that is transparent and beneficial to all Nigerians.

When asked for comments, spokesman for the Immigration service Mr. Olumbar Joachim said he was not aware of the Presidency getting offers to fill certain vacancies but added that there was nothing wrong with the Presidency or other officials making recommendations to the service.

“I am not aware of that and I don’t think it is correct,” he said, adding: “But for the Presidency giving recommendations, it is a different thing. Assuming that you, you know this person is of good character and all that, it’s a different thing. You are recommending somebody; it is not as if it is mandatory that that person would have to be recruited. What it means is that you are saying this person is not a criminal, you are saying that this person is a Nigerian.”

Joachim also denied that the CG is recruiting massively from her state of origin Abia and her husband’s state Imo. He said the exercise was open to scrutiny from the Federal Character Commission since it is mandatory that every state filled its quota.

“You cannot say madam is from Abia her husband is from Imo, Immigration is recruiting 1500 now Imo is producing 500; it is not possible anybody will ever do that,” he added.

He said all state controllers of Immigration were involved in the recruitment exercise.

Joachim said also the service introduced stringent vetting measures including having a guarantor to ensure it does not admit criminals, referring to a recent incident where an Immigration officer was arrested on suspicion of being a Boko Haram member.

“One thing is certain, the service will not engage in any exercise that will endanger the lives of innocent Nigerians. Two, considering the situation we are in now we will go the extra mile to ensure that criminals and terrorists are not brought into the service,” he added.

‘This cannot stand’

When Daily Trust contacted chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Character, Rep. Ahmed Idris (ACN, Plateau), he said they have opened investigations into the “illegal” recruitments in the Immigration service.

“We have met twice with the Comptroller General, the last was on Saturday and she told us that they are recruiting 4,500 new officers out of which 1,200 is for senior cadres or degree holders while  about 300 is for Diploma and secondary school leavers,” he said.

“Based on the reports we got, we have asked for their nominal roll and her last recruitment which will be given in a template that will reflect state by state distribution and even local governments. Section 4 of the 1999 constitution is very clear about Federal character in every government organisation and we won’t allow anybody who violates it to go scot-free.”

On whether the committee will reverse the recruitment, Idris said: “Certainly we will not only reverse it but we will go further and apply for their prosecution for perpetuating illegality.source:www.dailytrust.com

PoliticsJang Derives Pleasure From Crises-nlc by Ddaji(op): 3:23pm On Dec 10, 2012
Written by Francis Okeke Monday, 10 December 2012 05:00

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang as a crisis-happy governor who was determined to continue to instigate hostility.

NLC President Comrade Abdulwahed Omar in a press statement yesterday stated that “it is becoming obvious that the governor of Plateau State derives pleasure from crisis, and if not restrained, the embers of the conflagration he is stoking may somehow consume him.”

Local government workers which include primary school teachers and health workers have been on strike since June 1 as a result of the refusal of Jang’s administration to implement the new National Minimum Wage.

NLC has promised to shut down the state today.

Omar said the issues in contention bordered on the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage Act, “which is a law having been passed by the National assembly and signed by President Goodluck Jonathan as constitutionally required.”

He explained that when the state government claimed it lacked the required funds for the full implementation of the new wage, the workers demonstrated rare understanding by agreeing to a temporary implementation of 55% of the new wage, pending when the state’s finances improves.

“As usual of the Jang administration that is well known for unilaterally breaking mutual agreements, the state government did not only refuse to implement what they convinced the workers to accept, they went ahead to refuse to pay arrears of salary to the striking workers.

“For us, we have restrained ourselves from using the full weight of our capacity to declare total industrial action in the state because it is obvious to everyone that the state is already engulfed in several avoidable crisis enough to cause the governor deeper concern for peace. However, Jonah Jang seems determined to deepen the crisis as he has been mobilizing unemployed youths against striking workers in the state,” he said.SOURCE:www.dailytrust.com

PoliticsSanusi: I Wont Stop Talking by Ddaji(op): 5:01pm On Dec 06, 2012
Written by Yunus Abdulhamid Thursday, 06 December 2012 05:04

Central Bank governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi yesterday replied those who criticized him over his comments on the huge cost of governance, saying he will not stop speaking on the defects in the economy. Sanusi was reported to have said last week that with at least 70 per cent of government revenue being spent on the government itself, the economy will be better off if 50 per cent of workers were fired.

Since then he has been under sustained criticism from legislators and labour unions who even called for his sack.

But Sanusi, who was speaking at the Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja, said yesterday that he will keep on making a case for changes that would see the cost of governance go down in spite of his critics.

He said his job was not to make anyone happy but to provide good fiscal and monetary policies.

“The day we stop to talk because of fear of what will be reported, it means this country is dead. My job is not to make people happy. If you are not happy, go to your wife,” he said.

He blamed the constitution for creating too many political offices which guzzle lots of public funds in salaries and emoluments.

“These are issues we have to address; they are political issues; as a country, we have a constitution that makes it impossible for us to develop,” he said.

“Salaries and wages are paid not just to civil servants. This is a country where we have 774 local government councils; in each council you have a chairman, a vice chairman and may be 10 councilors.

“Take a state like Kano. Kano used to be one state; it is now Kano and Jigawa; when it was one state, you had one governor, may be nine or 10 commissioners. Now what do you have? That one state has become two states, two governors, two deputy governors, 40 commissioners, and may be 80 legislators, only God knows how many special advisers and assistants.

“This is not about NLC or TUC or the president of the National Assembly; it is about us as a country deciding whether this constitution we have chosen makes sense.”

Sanusi spoke in reaction to a question from the audience during the debate on ‘Deregulation, Regulation, Cost of Financial Services, and Financial Inclusion’ at the last day of the economic summit, organized by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.

He said it has become a tradition for the Nigerian media to sensationalise any public comments he made.

Sanusi’s remarks were filled with ‘ifs’, ‘whats’ and ‘whys’ which drew applauses from the audience.

On the constitution, he said, “The constitution says there must be a minister from every state. Let me ask, as educated and intelligent human beings, what is the connection between the number of states and ministers? If you have 50 states today, we have 50 ministries, you have 100 states, and you have 100 ministries? What kind of rubbish?”

The CBN governor said he believes government’s role is to take care of the people. “Now if the government is spending 70 percent of its revenue on itself, and 30 percent on the people, is sacking the Central Bank governor the solution? Now they are amending the constitution. Why do we need 500 legislators? And why is it that no Africa country has adopted this model of government?” he queried.

He said Nigeria’s greatest challenge, greater than corruption, lies in the promotion of mediocrity and sectionalism instead of merit.

“What kind of nonsense that a person due for promotion is denied on the basis of no vacancy to be filled from his state of origin? That could be done at the level of recruitment. We have been able to enthrone mediocrity.

“I have always said that the greatest challenge that we have in this country is that we do not give importance to merit. Forget corruption, go to China, they steal money. In Malaysia, there is corruption. They employ people who are qualified and know their job.”

He linked the violence across the country to poor management of the country by leaders. He said the textile industries in Kaduna and Kano used to employ over 600, 000 people but that now that they are out of jobs their children are out of school.

“We talk too much of where is this man from, what church he goes to. Rubbish! Rubbish! Why don’t we ask the right questions? How many megawatts of electricity are we generating? How many kilometers of roads have we built? What percentage of kids passes English and maths in schools in O’ level. We are not compelling the politicians to appoint people who can deliver. And I think, for me, there is a tragedy,” he said.www.dailytrust.com

Politics''the Buhari I Know'' By: Sam Nda Isaiah by Ddaji(op): 1:59pm On Nov 05, 2012
The Buhari I Know Mon, 05/11/2012 - 12:33am | SAM NDA-ISAIAH Columns The Monday Column

Last week, a certain Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulaziz, who claims to be second in command of Boko Haram, held a radio conference with journalists in Maiduguri in which he declared his sect’s readiness for a conditional ceasefire. He went ahead to name those they preferred or trusted to facilitate a proposed dialogue with the federal government. On his list of preferred facilitators were General Muhammadu Buhari, Shettima Ali Monguno, Gaji Galtimari and Bukar Abba Ibrahim. Only Buhari is not of the Borno/Yobe axis. But only the name of Buhari has generated passionate interest from both admirers and detractors.

Predictably, Buhari’s foes have jumped on this piece of news and are celebrating their pet fantasy: that Buhari must have been a sponsor of Boko Haram. Why should they pick him if they do not share common beliefs, someone declared in a newspaper yesterday. A certain Bitrus Kaze, who claims to be a lawmaker representing Jos South/Jos East federal constituency in Plateau State, and who, I am certain, has never met Buhari, asserted quite “authoritatively” via a press statement that the nomination of Buhari as a facilitator by Boko Haram can be “likened to the proverbial birds of the same feather (sic) that flock together”. Continuing, he said, “anyone who has been following the internecine violence perpetrated especially in northern Nigeria by those merchants of death should understand their choice of General Buhari. Eventually, the men behind the masks are being unveiled. In my view, Buhari, like Boko Haram, is a religious extremist who cannot be trusted to negotiate for sustainable peace in Nigeria. In the build-up to the 2003 presidential election, Buhari was reported to have asked Muslims across the country to vote only for the presidential candidate that would defend and uphold Islam.”

Hon. Kaze also spoke of the Sheikh Lemu report in a way that showed clearly that he didn’t read the report and didn’t listen to all the statements and explanations of Sheikh Ahmed Lemu.

The social media and the internet have also been worked into a frenzy on this issue of Buhari’s nomination by Boko Haram. Most who berate the former head of state on the internet are clearly ignorant of the man they comment so authoritatively about. But the one I find more exasperating is the mischief of those around government who, though not making public statements, are rejoicing over this development. It’s like Boko Haram has given them exactly what they have always craved free of charge. One of them jokingly said, “Why should we be surprised? We have always known that Buhari is the chairman of Boko Haram.” Of course, they did not want to be quoted.

The people around President Jonathan have, for long, been insinuating the nonsense about a link between some northern leaders and statesmen who have served this country in the past meritoriously and Boko Haram. Because they were the sponsors of the Niger Delta insurgency, they believe that everyone must be like them. Only a few like Pa Edwin Clark have been courageous enough to actually name General Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the sponsors of Boko Haram. I once told some of them to take Clark to court on the matter, but they all told me they would not dignify the man.

Only very few people would claim to be closer to General Buhari than I. And even among those close to him, very few can claim to know him like I do. Buhari is one of the most outstanding human beings I know, with all his faults. He is certainly not a perfect man. It is not for nothing that I have supported and voted for him in all the three attempts he has made to be president of this country. Buhari may not be a perfect person or your ideal politician, but I am yet to meet a sane person who would disagree with me that Nigeria would have been a totally different place if he had been sworn in as president in 2003 or 2007 or 2011. At the very least, nobody would have attempted to steal N2.6 trillion under his presidency and if any thief were bold enough to try it, there would be very harsh consequences – exactly the kind of leadership that any country that cherishes progress would need. He would have given a damn about declaring his assets and there would have been a very clear response to the Niger Delta militancy and oil thefts that took a life of their own during the Obasanjo, Yar’Adua and Jonathan presidencies. And Boko Haram would not have overpowered the government as we see today. Remember when he was head of state and Maitatsine insurgents struck in Kano? That was the last time the world heard anything about Maitatsine. In fact, for those who remember very well, Maitatsine started during the Shehu Shagari era and it was when Buhari took over and the sect struck in Kano killing many people that he put a decisive end to the insurgency. Buhari had said at the time that Maitatsine would never happen again and it never did. Boko Haram is a mutation of Maitatsine.

Anyone that is close enough to former presidents and heads of state would know that one thing that binds them together – and which they all agree on, no matter their differences – is the obsessive belief in the oneness and stability of Nigeria. And I am close enough to almost all living former heads of state (with the exception of Obasanjo, of course) to authoritatively speak on this.

Buhari, of course, is one man that is generally misunderstood. I remember, a few years ago, when a pastor friend of mine said that Buhari didn’t laugh at all and would always be unfriendly. I found a way to lure my friend into Buhari’s home one evening. Immediately we came before the former head of state, I announced to Buhari in the presence of everyone, “Sir, this my pastor friend said you don’t laugh at all.” Buhari burst into a hearty laughter and immediately started a very funny conversation with my pastor friend. By the time we left, my friend was both in stitches and delighted. This has been a subject of his discussions since.

Buhari’s favourite in LEADERSHIP is the Ghana-Must-Go pocket cartoon at the back page. He would call several times laughing and laughing and laughing. By the way, this Ghana-Must-Go fetish is also shared by General IBB, General Abdulsalami, General Danjuma, the late President Yar’Adua, former Vice President Atiku and sundry political leaders of disparate tendencies across the country.

Buhari always enjoys a good joke even if it is one poked at him. And he is one of the wittiest persons I know. Recently, some pretty-looking ladies went to visit him at home to seek his support and blessing for their NGO. They asked for a photograph with him which was later published in several newspapers. On sighting the photograph, I called him to say that he should have proceeded to pick one of them as a second wife. He was so amused that he told some people that “Sam ba ya da kirki”, meaning “Sam is a very unkind person.” He said I was unkind to have suggested such an unkind thing to him. Everyone laughed.

During a Council of State meeting just before the 2003 elections in which he was the presidential candidate of the opposition ANPP contesting against the PDP of which a sitting President Obasanjo was the candidate, there was a banter between him and Obasanjo which many people still remember. Buhari had a cold then and was coughing just before the meeting. It was also during the outbreak of some strange kind of flu in Asia. When Obasanjo noticed Buhari was coughing, he said, “Muhammadu, hope you have not contracted that strange disease”, or something to that effect. Buhari immediately responded and said, “I have not been globetrotting sir.” Everyone burst into loud laughter. That was the period Obasanjo was gallivanting all over the planet and hardly stayed at home to perform his presidential duties. What Buhari was telling Obasanjo then was that it was he (Obasanjo) who would more likely contract a foreign disease as a result of his famed globetrotting.

Hon. Kaze and many others who do not know Buhari call him a religious extremist – and Hon. Kaze particularly still quotes something he claims Buhari said a long time ago: advising Muslims to vote only for fellow Muslims. Well, I think people like him would need to read Bishop Matthew Kukah’s position on this, which he wrote in an article at the time. Bishop Kukah, who knows Buhari well and even spoke with him on the matter, spoke the truth at that time as he always does. Those who also know Buhari would tell you that there are only two Nigerians who can get him to do what he doesn’t want to do – General Gowon and General Danjuma, both Christians. I am sure Hon. Kaze and his like do not know Buhari enough to know this. Neither would they know that his personal driver of more than 10 years is a Christian. His cook is a Christian and so are many others on his domestic staff.

On December 31, 1983, just after the overthrow of Shehu Shagari, and the coup was still going on, Buhari left Kaduna to return to his base in Jos where he was the GOC. On his way, he sent a message to other “conspirators” that Major-General Domkat Bali, who was the most senior among the coupists, should be declared head of state. It was later in the day that Bali and others in Lagos dispatched an Air Force plane to Jos to bring him (Buhari) to Lagos in order to make him head of state. Muslim extremist Buhari choosing Bali, a Christian, to be head of state? Does this make sense? Buhari told me this story himself. The story was even the more corroborated by Dr Mahmud Tukur, the cerebral minister of commerce in his cabinet then and perhaps the closest to him. Dr Tukur actually went further to tell me that, on two occasions as head of state, Buhari almost walked away and simply wanted to hand over to Bali because he just didn’t like the way some of his colleagues were behaving. This is also another exclusive for people like Hon. Kaze.

You may not like Buhari and may actually hate his guts, but there are some facts about him that cannot be controverted. He actively detests corruption, he hates slothfulness and takes Nigeria and public service too seriously to be associated with any type of crime whatsoever. He has told me that Islam does not approve of taking innocent lives. Boko Haram people may be trying to latch onto his credibility, but the Buhari I know is unlikely to accept to be part of anything to do with Boko Haram. Don’t forget, this is the man who obliterated Maitatsine when he was in power.

If Buhari has any faults at all, it is that he is totally without guile and too naïve to stop election riggers from always taking advantage of him. I have had issues with him over the path to victory in the past elections. He has not been able to cobble together the kind of national alliance that is a desideratum for winning the presidency in a democracy and a strategy for stopping election riggers. When Obasanjo in 2003 and 2007 and Jonathan in 2011 declared that the elections would be free and fair, he believed them hook, line and sinker. You can accuse Buhari of too trusting but certainly not violence or religious bigotry or mischief. He is too much of a statesman and too much into the principles of law and order to be associated with the kind of crimes that Hon. Kaze and Jonathan’s cronies are trying to associate with him.

I am a Christian, a Bible-believing one and a very proud one for that matter. If Buhari were a tenth of what people like Kaze, who don’t know him but authoritatively say he is, would I still be one of his closest associates?

PoliticsCAN President Denies Being A Murderer by Ddaji(op): 11:13am On Sep 26, 2012
Written by Eyo Charles, Calabar Wednesday, 26 September 2012 07:

The President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Ayo Oritsajafor has debunked insinuations that he was once a violent man and a murderer.

Briefing newsmen in Calabar when he declared open a six day meeting of the Niger Delta Christian Leaders forum, the CAN president also denied that he is a fundamentalist and partisan leader, saying these insinuations are misleading.

“Against what people that have taken control of a section of the media portray in order to confuse the people, I wish to say that I have never shot a gun before in my life; I have never killed anybody before and I have never encouraged anyone to kill a human being”, he said.

He said some people take delight in giving out half truths in order to create more problems in the country adding that though he was not afraid of trouble yet he would not join issues with them.

Speaking on Boko Haram, Oritsejafor said the sect is fueled by extreme religious ideology and not poverty saying “because they have not come out to tell us that they are killing people because they are poor”.

He maintained that Niger Delta Region is the pedestal Nigeria is standing to lay claim to greatness, “Niger Delta is a region of great people and it is the region that has given Nigeria its greatness yet we are poor, the Niger Delta is powerful yet we are weak.”
PoliticsJonathan Condemns Blasphemous Film by Ddaji(op): 10:02am On Sep 26, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the blasphemous movie produced in the United States of America (USA) that denigrated Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and Islam.

Addressing the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations yesterday in New York, Jonathan condemned deliberate denigration of religious beliefs.

He warned that “freedom of expression should never be construed as a license for actions that may lead to violence and disorder.”

The president said freedom of expression and religious tolerance should be complimentary to each other for the peaceful coexistence of people of varying faiths and religious beliefs.

He told the assembly that “Events of recent weeks have demonstrated how interconnected our world is and the extent to which one incident can spark off general mayhem and conflagration. Freedom of expression should not be a license to incitement. The freedom that we all hold dear and true should be exercised wisely and cautiously. Freedom of expression and religious tolerance must not be mutually exclusive but should be complimentary to each other.

“Much as we eschew violence and deplore the needless losses of lives and destruction of property, we also condemn the deliberate denigration of religious beliefs and sensitivities which in turn lead to counter reactions,” President Jonathan said.

Jonathan reiterated his call for the establishment of a Conflict Mediation Commission under the Office of the UN Secretary-General to further strengthen the peace building initiatives of the United Nations.Source:www.dailytrust.com

PoliticsBakassi:jonathan Says Nigeria Committed To ICJ Ruling by Ddaji(op): 11:52am On Sep 25, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan said Nigeria will remain committed to all rulings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in resolving international disputes.

Addressing the first-ever High-Level Plenary Session of the United Nations on the Rule of Law yesterday in New York, President Jonathan said Nigeria will continue to obey ICJ rulings while calling on nations not to pick and select rulings to observe.

His commitment to the UN Assembly came in the wake of growing calls for the Federal Government to reopen the case on Bakassi following fresh fact that may have been unearthed.

Nigeria has barely 17 days to re-open its case under Article 61 of the ICJ statute of 1946 in respect of the Bakassi Peninsula which the international court ceded to Cameroon on October 10, 2002.

Presidential spokesman Reuben Abatiin a statement quoted Jonathan as saying “Nigeria recognises the important role of the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals in the peaceful resolution of international disputes.

“The work of the ICJ and other international criminal tribunals has contributed to the promotion of world peace and security as well as ending impunity around the globe by holding accountable, those responsible for grave violations of international and humanitarian law.

“Member States should therefore continue to provide support for these international adjudicatory mechanisms to enable them discharge their respective mandates.”

The Minister of Information Labaran Maku had said at a programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja last week that Nigeria’s position on the Bakassi Peninsula was still in conformity with the outcome of the International Court of Justice.

But many individuals and groups have called on the federal government to reopen the case believing that the country still is in possession of fresh fact to reclaim the oil rich territory, now under Cameroonian sovereignty.

The Nigerian Bar Association, at the end of its 52nd Annual General Conference which held in August in Abuja, issued a communiqué in which it recommended that the Federal Government should revisit the judgement by applying to that court to review the judgement under one of the provisions in the statute that set up that court.

The said provision states that an aggrieved party can re-apply to the court for the review of its judgement on the grounds that fresh facts have emerged which necessitated the review.

But such application for review needs to be done within 10 years of the delivery of the judgement. At the time the NBA gave its recommendation on August 31, Nigeria still had only six weeks before the expiration of the 10 years of the judgment.

“That the NBA is aware that there are grounds upon which the Government of Nigeria may legitimately apply for a revision of the ICJ judgment of 10th October 2002, and having adjudged those grounds (or fresh facts that were not considered by the ICJ earlier on) as being worthy of reconsideration: Consequently, the NBA calls on the Government of Nigeria to, without further delay, apply under Article 61 of the ICJ statute of 1946, to the ICJ for a revision of what is an unjust judgement over Bakassi,” the NBA communiqué read.

President of the NBA Wale Oke could not be reached for comments yesterday regarding the latest commitment by President Jonathan.

Chairman of Cross River State traditional rulers’ council and paramount ruler of Bakassi of LGA, HRH Etim Okon Edet also expressed sadness that the federal government has refused to appeal ICJ ruling on Bakassi as the opportunity runs out in about two week.

Speaking to Daily Trust in reaction to the statement of the Minister of Information Labaran Maku, the traditional ruler said that if the federal government is not willing and interested in appealing the judgement, it is important for them to free the people of Bakassi and grant them the right to control the natural resources available there in order for them to actualize their self-determination.

“We know how to confront CameRoun. We can stand on our own. My people want to take their destiny in their own hands”, he told our reporter on phone.

Jonathan in his statement said countries must honour international obligations, “including the obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force, the obligation to settle disputes through peaceful means, the obligation to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms and abide by international humanitarian law.”

He said the rule of law at international level must be based on the core principles of the United Nations which were further reaffirmed in the 2005 World Summit Document.

Jonathan told the gathering his Administration will, continue to encourage the Nigerian judiciary to play a pivotal role in the advancement and elaboration of the rights of Nigerians through effective oversight over the actions of the executive and legislature.

The session which was opened by United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, was also addressed by the President of the Security Council, the President of the International Court of Justice, the Head of the United Nations Commission for Human Rights the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and other participating Heads of State and Government.
