Health / FEGOCO PH Alumni Holds Health Walk In Lagos by DebbyJose: 10:04pm On Oct 30, 2021
The old student of the prestigious Federal Government College Port Harcourt, FEGOCO PH, on Saturday, 30 October 2021, converged at the Catholic Church, Admiralty Way in Lekki, for a purposeful walk in a campaign for physical and healthy wellbeing.

The 9-kilometre walk kicked off around 8.30 am from Admiralty Way to Lekki Link Bridge. The Alumni who participated did three laps back and forth adorning purple jerseys, and ensuring that all COVID protocols are observed.

Medical personnel and facility were on ground for emergencies, with an ambulance and escort vehicles. The walk was well organized as the team followed traffic-free routes.

President of the Federal Government College PH Old Student Association, Mr Gogo Kurubo who spearheaded the Health Walk, emphasized the importance of staying healthy. He added that walking has long been considered an ideal form of physical exercise.

It is easy, accessible, requires no special skills or equipment, poses little risk of injury, and can be done virtually anywhere, he told newsmen.

Mr Gogo Kurubo is a COVID-survivor who has remained at the forefront of the campaign for staying safe and complying with COVID-19 safety protocol.

Having survived COVID, I have come to appreciate the importance of exercise and how it fosters comprehensive body wellness.

He added that a collective cause like the health walk is effective in contributing to overall weight loss, lowering BMI (body mass index) and body fat percentage, and decreasing blood pressure.

“Our approach to advancing the blossoming drive for health and fitness, through the Health Walk, also reflects our capacity to create value for our community. We have made it our responsibility to encourage the general public in the adoption of lifestyles that promote good health and well-being, he said.

Speaking about the role of the Alumni, Mr Gogo stated that the Alumni has been a huge inspiration for him and for other members.

Having left school about 40 years back or 10 years back to meet up, the excitement was visible as old friends and schoolmates see one another for the very first time in many years, and the nostalgia is awesome.

Beyond the Health Walk, the Alumni association aims to play very significant roles in other areas such as education, infrastructural development of the Alma mater and maintenance of high education standards in school through the organisation of scholarships for students.

Through this Health Walk, it is also believed that the alumni is achieving the vision to making sports that instrument for unity and development among members and the community by extension.

Culture / Many Rivers To Cross For Yoruba People- Ona Yoruba Jin by DebbyJose: 2:48pm On Oct 27, 2021

#THINKING CORNER, ONA YORUBA JIN

It is unfortunate that we are yet to and we have never actualized the dreams of Yoruba Nation and we have already started to use 'Gbetugbetu, Epe, Afose, Olugbohun and more dangerous diabolical charms which could turn the entire Yorubaland into the land of destitute on ourselves

As it is now, more and more people who believe that the only remedy to responding to social media attacks is to bring curses to bear on anyone who dares to talk bad about Ganiyu Adams

The stage is getting hotter as more people are equally gearing up to invoke their own gods in self defense. Undoubtedly, the stage is getting set for internal wrangling between the warring factions.

Those who should act fast to broker peace, are dangerously maintaining sit down and look posture, while Yorubaland is getting ready to wage war against themselves.

I am beginning to think that Yorubaland has been cursed and the curses are really taking toll on our unity, love and respect.

This carefully selected appellation couldn't have meant anything to the struggle for the actualization of Yoruba Nation, if all those acclaimed agitators, spectators and their corporate allies, are not trying to outwit themselves for nothing but for popularity sake.

From Sunday Igboho, Koiki, Akanda Awikonko, Lady K. Olaoluwa, Dara, Tenny Omoologo and other notable influential writers within Yoruba perimeter fence, it is no longer at ease.

Surprisingly, what started as a little crack on the wall, is now expanded beyond what ordinary application of cement without bricks could patch. The crack is getting wider and wider to the extent that if not renovated, the wall itself may eventually collapse on the inhabitants of the building.

Erelu Oodua Mabel Onaneye has been a frontier, pioneer and motivator of note when it comes to the issue of Yoruba Nation. She has been an incurable optimist in the social, cultural, traditional and historical stability of Yorubaland. I can conveniently allude to her ingenuity when it comes to the spirituality of our cultural identities.

The Erelu Oodua of AYE KINGDOM, as she is fondly called, is a bridge builder without inbitations and hindrances. She is a bridge builder between the Royal institution and the social spectrum of the people who are not in any way connected with royalty and as such, may not have had the opportunity to appreciate and value our traditional institution.

Most recently, she was instrumental to the condemnation of few Yoruba people with questionable characters, installing themselves as Yoruba Obas in diaspora. The fight against the continued desecration of our cultural, traditional and historical values is not a fight of personal hatred or vendetta, but a fight for the sanctity of our traditional institution.

Family / How Popular Ota Families End Age Long Land Dispute by DebbyJose: 10:06am On Sep 24, 2021
If there was something that took away sleep from the eyes of Ogun governor, Dapo Abiodun, it was how to settle land ownership rift among families from various conflicting alleged owners. This is the story of the age long rift between Ajangboju Koniwo Agbogbo Akindipe and Fatusi Ogedengbe families in Atan Otta, Ogun State. The crisis, which predated his administration, had brought the community to its knees, having defied measures by previous administrations to resolve it.

It was said to be a matter of land ownership that developed out of what was regarded as famlily- driven conflict.

Ajangboju, Koniwo Agbogbo Akindipe, who are the appellant has claimed the ownership of a vast expanse of land measuring 6,477,124 acres located lying being and situated at Imojuba Town, Along Atan Ota, Owode, Idi- iroko road, Ogun State, more particularly described on Survey plan number AKN/OG/074/97 dated December 8th 1997 drawn by Surveyor S,O Akinde. The appellant in their casefile alleged that the Fatusi Ogedengbe had illegally infiltrated and trespassed on the land and attempts to claim ownership.

This created a major crisis, erupting into fatal confrontations between the two communities.

For many years, the families engaged each other in battle.

However, after several peace efforts deployed by popular property outfit, Reality Global Properties Limited, the age-long family hostilities between the two clans has been settled. On September 15, 2021, spokesperson of Reality global properties, Princess Foyinsola converged the leaders of the two families and their lawyers: Sola Ojutalayo (SAN) for the prosecutor and Olusola Dare for the defendant and prevailed upon both families to settle the case out of court. The two parties were made to sign an agreement on land ownership and boundary delineation.

In his remarks, Foyinsola Agbedina, assured the delegates from the families’ justice and a fair playing ground, as she appealed to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edward Ajogun, to ensure that land disputes do not degenerate into unnecessary bloodshed, in the interest of justice and to help the society to uphold the sanctity of the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Bureau of Lands and Survey in Ogun, Aina Salami, has commended both families for the peaceful resolution that was resolved to. He however reiterate that any other party or group of people that may want to reignite a fresh dispute, by claiming ownership or trespassing illegally on the land shall face the full wrath of the law, no matter how highly placed.

Culture / 60th Goodwill Letter To My Boss, Mentor Erelu Oodua Tinuade Mabel Onaneye by DebbyJose: 12:42pm On Sep 11, 2021
ERELU TINUADE MABEL ONANEYE:A Distinguished Custodian Of African Cultures Turns 60
By Saint-Olawale Jimoh

From the continent of Africa came a giant that wax great with each passing season, a veritable torchbearer of African traditional practices, a global custodian of Yoruba cultures, Erelu Tinuade Mabel Onaneye who turns 60 today. Turning 60 is not an unusual occurrence but for a woman variously described as an uncommon philanthropist, an icon of rare kind, a role model, a pathfinder, a woman with the heart of gold and a pillar of African traditional cultures, it's a big deal.

Here's a woman whose epithets and stories of her good works could fill a house. Her mantra, centred around making life better for the people, has continued to resonate loudly across her State of origin and indeed beyond. Yes ago, one Ms Comfort Adefulire, one of the beneficiaries of the free health care services carried out by a team of medical experts from Texas, United States flooded social media with posts eulogizing Erelu Tinuade, who brought the team to Ms Adefulire's community in Irele, Ondo State. This and many others best captured the essence of Erelu-Oodua Tinuade Mabel Onaneye.

The said free medical service was first of it's kind and was fully sponsored by this US-based businesswoman and philanthropist, who decided to take up the challenge of bringing free medical experts to Nigeria with more concentration on Ikale and Ilaje people of Ondo State who have been marginalized for so long and denied the genuine dividends of democracy most especially in the area of health care delivery. She started this in 2012 and it went on successfully till November 2016. Every visit was a huge success with many beneficiaries shedding tears of joys seeing how the wonderful team cured their age-long diseases and sicknesses. It was just too good to be true as everyone witnessed these August events, unlike the fictitious ones Nigerian government only announced in newspapers but were never carried out.

Asides the free medical services, there are several philanthropic gestures credited to this woman of virtue and substance. During Covid-19 lickdown, her relief packages for the aged and needies reached every home in her beloved Ode-Aye town and immediate communities. The Federation of Aye Students will remain eternally grateful to her for cash gifts to all indigenous students of higher institutions belonging to the association. We have equally heard of how she had consistently stood to render finacial assistance to other students at all levels who for one reason or the other couldn't pay their tuition bills. Sources close to Erelu have repeatedly maintained she usually frown at the idea of making her activities in this regard public. Her private life guiding principle lies in words of renowned English Author and Philosopher, Albert Pine which says, 'what we do for ourselves dies with us, but what we do for others and the world remains and it's immortal.'

Her tenacity of purpose coupled with unquenchable thirst to leave the Nigerian society, most particularly her beloved Ondo people better than she met them is the reasosn her people would never stop seeking for her intervention anytime government failed them. It's a known fact that many whose paths have crossed that of Erelu may have cringed, recoiled or cried inside at one time or another when it suddenly would have hit them that this great philanthropist will not be around forever. Yes, nobody lives forever but footprints are forever. Her indellible legacies would never be forgotten. I wish more leaders and politicians will learn from this rare being, the beauty of selfless services and the imperatives of transcendental leadership.

Dear Ma, you sacrificed so much, you have blessed so many lives, you have lived for others and haven't depised anyone. The world is watching you. Many have been inspired by you to live and to dare. To stand and to stand firm. To give and to give even more. To uphold lofty ideals and observe the priceless principles. On behalf of my family, my team at Observers' Reflection International and Metropolitan Mirror, I wish you a happy 60th birthday celebration. May God spare your life to do even more for humanity.

Music/Radio / How I Started Acting 32 Years Ago In IBADAN by DebbyJose: 4:54pm On Sep 04, 2021
•OYO TAMPAN Governor, Yeye Oge ROSE ODIKA

On Saturday, 10th July 2021, the ancient city of Ibadan bubbled, as one of the star actresses making waves in the Ibadan movie industry, Yeye Oge Rose Odika (JP) celebrated a 3-in-1 event.
Yeye Oge Rose Odika who is the Oyo TAMPAN Governor celebrated her 32 years on stage, in grand style. She unveiled and raised funds for her pet project, The BOND project, a project which according to her, was borne out of the need to promote our core values so that we can live in a better society, as many people have lost their values in the society today.
She also awarded many dignitaries she holds in high esteem in her life. These are those who have played a great role in her life. She calls it Role Model/Icons Award.
The popular Hall of Grace, at Jogor Center, situated along Liberty road, Ibadan was filled to the brim, as many of her veteran colleagues, even the younger ones in the movie industry, especially, Oyo State TAMPAN members came out to celebrate with her.
The 3-in-1 celebration started with a Thanksgiving Service at St Catholic Church, Bodija, before all the guests moved to Jogor Centre.
Amongst the celebrities that graced the event were, veteran actors like Dele Odule, Akin Lewis, Peju Ogunmola, and Samson Eluwode (Jinadu Ewele). There were others like Yomi Fash-Lanso, Damola Olatunji, Toyin Adewale, Foluke Daramola, Lola Ajibola, Owolabi Ajasa, Rukayat Lawal (Iya Ibadan), Aderupoko, Bose Akinosun, Adewale Abdulrasak, Tunde Ola Yusuf and many more.
Ace compere, Alariwo and Wale Lawal compered the event.
In a brief chat with City People Head of Tv, SUNDAY ADIGUN, Yeye Oge Rose Odika revealed how her beauty paved way for her in the movie industry.

Let me start by congratulating you for the success of your 3 in 1 event, how do you feel celebrating 32 years on Stage?
I’m so happy achieving it because I planned celebrating my 30 years on stage but ended up celebrating 32 years on stage despite all odds so I’m grateful to God.
For the benefit of the younger ones reading this interview, how did acting start for you?
I had fallen in love with acting since my secondary school days when we used to have drama groups, friends club, and events where we perform stage plays. So, one day, my vice principal then, Dr (Mrs) Ero invited me to her office and she told me that she saw a talent in me and that I can become a good actress in future if I can work towards it, but my father from the outset never wanted it. Somehow, I started gradually and from my secondary school days, I had made up my mind to be an actress and everybody used to tell me that you are good in what you are doing. Since then, I fell in love and that passion has been there from a young age.
What has been your experience in the profession?
My experience is tremendous. Firstly, it has been able to give me an image because I see myself as an image-maker, and this has changed my way of life. I see myself as a role model. So, it has propelled me to keep my integrity. Secondly, I’m enjoying the glamour that comes with being a celebrity. Sometimes, when you go to the bank, you will be queuing and people will just walk up to you and say madam just step forward. I do enjoy those types of favor.
What informed your decision to be a Yoruba actress, despite your Igbo background?
Environment has a lot to do with children. I grew up in Ibadan all my life and we didn’t have any actor shooting English film in the vicinity at the time. No production of any English film or play came from that end. So, I’m used to the environment of acting with Yoruba actors of the industry. I came into acting in 1989 and I came into limelight in 1993 at the same time that I was also schooling in the University. So, I only had little time during the holidays to act, and whenever I’m back to Ibadan during holidays, the only thing I do is going to the actors within the vicinity to act. After about 4 to 5 years, I then asked myself, “Do I still need the stress of going to line up for English films? This is because I have tried like one or two times to join, and they told me to go and line up and start from the beginning. So, I decided to stay in Yoruba, although I also do English films and I’m good with that. I can say that my environment had a great effect on my decision.
What are your challenges in the profession?
Well, the first challenge I had was what I told you that I was just on my own before I was invited to act in a particular film, Ododo Eye to be precise. I was not part of that association in the theatre industry then, and when I was invited to take part in the lead role in Ododo Eye, members of the association were insisting that I could not because I was not part of the association. When the producer of that film, stood his ground and insisted that I was the person she wanted, they had to succumb. I first had the issue of the association blocking me from acting in any film produced by their members. I had to quickly go back after that production to be a member.
Secondly, when you are coming to an association where they already have an array of staff and I am just coming in, a young girl of 19, with people ahead of me, it was challenging but by God’s grace, I was able to come out of it.
While you were giving your speech, you talked about how you were casted for Ododo Eye’s role, based on your beauty, what are the roles your beauty played in who you are today?
My beauty actually played a long role and still playing. We all know that for you to make waves in the entertainment industry you must be beautiful. My beauty actually made me fit in into the role when the producer saw me. She said I’m the kind of person she’s looking for.
Let’s talk about the people you gave awards, what really inspired that?
I have few people who have contributed to my success in life, in one way or the other. Many of them I see as mentors. And I believe this is the only way I can say thank you to them. So I have two categories of award. The first one is Mentors Award, and like I said it’s a way of saying thank you for those who helped in one way or the other to see to my progress in the industry. The second Award is called Pillar Awards, and it’s for selected few who can assist my project in the advisory capacity or financially.
Let’s talk about your new project too. What is it all about?
Project Bond is about projecting our core values in the society like hard work, integrity, and respect for elders. An adage in Yoruba says “Ile la ti nko eso ro de” i.e Charity begins at home. Many people have lost their values in our society today. Therefore Project Bond was borne out of the need to promote our core values so that we can live in a better world. I plan to showcase this in my new series.

Politics / Sacking Of Two Federal Ministers By Buhari: A Misplaced Priority- Erelu Tinuade by DebbyJose: 1:59pm On Sep 02, 2021
The globally acknowledged ambassador of African traditional cultures and Erelu-Oodua of Aye Kingdom, in Ondo State, Erelu Tinuade Mabel Onaneye has criticized the sacking of the Minister of Agriculture, Mohammed Nanomo and his Power counterpart, Saleh Mamman by President Buhari, saying it's a misplaced priority and efforts in the wrong direction when there are more pressing issues needing urgent government attention.

She made the declaration from her base in Texas, United States in a Press Release she granted, endorsed and made available to the press and general public via her media aide, Saint-Olawale Jimoh, shortly after the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adeshina, announced President Buhari's decision in the morning of Wednesday 1st of September, 2021.

'In the face of serious security challenges that has made Nigeria a laughing stock within international communities, one begin to wonder if firing Ministers of Agriculture & Power is what should be the next action from any serious President.' She blasted.

'All the efforts and momentum channelled towards hunting down Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho and others should have been directed towards winning the battle against Boko Haram and his murderous herdsmen called bandits ravaging our lands.' Erelu added.

In conclusion, Erelu enjoins President Buhari and his cabinet members to focus more on the safety of lives and properties of Nigerians rather than creating unnecessary distractions all in the name of convincing Nigerians they're truly in charge. She says if anyone should be sacked at this present state of situations in Nigeria, it should be President Buhari himself who has failed Nigerians in all ramifications.

Health / Woman Who Needs Financial Aid For Daughter's Kidney Treatment Cries Out For Help by DebbyJose: 3:21pm On Aug 25, 2021
Little Aisha Bashiru, 3, has been in hospital since June 2021. She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and currently undergoing treatment at Bloom Boom Paediatric Center in Lagos. Little Aisha’s parents need financial assistance of more than N500,000 just as a deposit for her examination and preliminary treatment, according to the doctor’s advice.

A medical report signed by Dr Ehierim, on behalf of the Consultant Physician Nephrologist at Bloom Bloom hospital, reads in part: “The 3-year-old girl is yet to make urine despite the fluid challenge. An assessment of severe sepsin with acute kidney injury is discovered."

“The best treatment option for chronic kidney disease, in terms of improved quality of life and long term, is a kidney repair. The above requires substantial funding,” he said.

Narrating her ordeal to our Correspondent, Mrs. Bashiru said life has become so burdensome and painful as a result of her daughter’s sickness which had drained the family’s resources.

She said that the family could no longer bear the financial cost of the series of tests and referrals which they had undergone in the past two months.

Just on Tuesday, the girl was transferred from Lagos to Babcock specialist hospital for treatment and was later referred back to Lagos for another test.

Aisha is currently at Bloom Boom Paediatric Centre in Lagos where her mother has made payment for series of tests, aside from the registration fee of N35,000.00

Mrs. Bashiru is soliciting financial support of N500,000.00 from the government, kind-hearted individuals and corporate organisations to keep her daughter alive.

Culture / Attack On Nigerian Defense Academy: Aftermath Of Pampering Banditry by DebbyJose: 11:29pm On Aug 24, 2021
The highly revered global custodian of African cultures and Erelu-Oodua of Aye Kingdom, Erelu Tinuade Mabel Onaneye has blamed the attack on Nigerian Defense Academy Afaka-Kaduna yesterday morning on compromised leadership and aftermath of pampering banditry and insurgence in the north by Fulani-led Federal Government all in the name of ethnicity and religious bigotry.

She made the declaration from her base in Texas, United States in a Press Release she granted, signed and made available to the press and general public via her media aide, Saint-Olawale Jimoh, shortly after the attack on the morning of Tuesday, 24th of August, 2021.

'It's a national tragedy and big shame in a nation headed by a former military general. Unfortunately, we cannot expect anything lesser when Buhari-led federal government continue to pamper bandits and murderous herdsmen all in the name of ethnicity and religious bigotry.' Erelu lamented.

'Today they're apprehend, tomorrow they're pardoned, rehabilitated and placed on monthly salary or absorbed into Nigerian army. I don't know of any nation that romances banditry except Nigeria.' She added.

In conclusion, Erelu says until the security apparatus and measures to tackle insurgency and banditry are clearly spelt out by the federal government with all sincerity, this problem may linger and metamorphose to large scale attack, citing Afghan-Taliban example.

Music/Radio / BREAKING NEWS: Multichoice Nigeria Settles With The Music Industry, Pays MCSN by DebbyJose: 11:19pm On Aug 24, 2021
This is the best time for musical copyright society as the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte (MCSN) has announce that it has reached an amicable settlement with Multichoice Nigeria Limited on the judgment which MCSN secured against Multichoice both at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, for the broadcast and distribution of musical works in the repertoire of MCSN on all Multichoice channels within the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This was made known in a statement released by the Copyright Society on Tuesday, August 24, 2021

According to the settlement also covers other exploitations of MCSN’s repertoire on other sister platforms of Multichoice up to 31st December 2020.

Having attained this milestone, MCSN and Multichoice Nigeria Limited now see each other as sister organisations which must work for the success of the other, particularly in the area of exploitation of and remuneration for intellectual works, notably musical works, sound recordings and ancillary works.

Since the information filtered out that Multichoice has settled with MCSN and that payment has been made, MCSN has been receiving series of inquiries and in some cases, outright demand for a share of the money paid to it by Multichoice.

In response to this inquiries and demands, MCSN would want to assure everyone that due process is being followed in dealing with the subject matter as follows:

MCSN’s Management would make a formal report of the outcome of the settlement to its (MCSN’s) relevant authorities, particularly the Board of Directors and Members’ General Meeting in formal communications and meetings.

Management would then make proposals to the bodies on how the money should be allocated in line with best practices, all which is still an ongoing process.

Noting that the settlement and payment were recorded in the course of the year 2021, MCSN would draw a line between which years should what particular payment fall in and deal accordingly. For instance, MCSN has to determine what allocation would be made to each year from 2006 and who benefits from whatever distribution allocated to each year, from which all MCSN’s members and international affiliate societies would certainly benefit.

One thing which MCSN has made clear and which its Board agrees with is that all liabilities from the past would not be loaded on and borne by this single payment, as this settlement is purely an opening for more past, present and future incomes.

MCSN would therefore want to assure everyone that any and everyone who has any contractual, legal or even moral claim to the payment would certainly be paid, without any form of sentiment, emotion or blackmail.

Those who have genuine stakes and claim in MCSN should have their fingers crossed and await development.

It is hereby directed that all members, who have registered and been admitted into the membership of the Society since 2006 should update their records, particularly their bank details with the Society, as the Society have migrated away from cheque and cash payments.

Recall that 5.9billion was recently paid by Multichoice to MCSN through Appeal court judgement. Content creators and music artists are implored to register and upload their contents on GoCreate to access the fund.

Education / Top 50 Schools To Watch Out For Ahead Resumption [WATCH OUT] by DebbyJose: 10:20am On Aug 21, 2021
A holistic approach to education – that addresses students’ learning, social and emotional needs – is crucial, especially in times of crisis. The COVID-19 interruption in every areas of life since 2020 has changed the social narrative, and by implication reshaped the style and direction of academic practice.

The current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is having a profound impact, not only on people’s health, but also on how they learn, work and live. Among the most important challenges created by COVID-19 is how to adapt a system of education built around physical schools. While the students are striving to get an education, they are now groomed to learn to survive the surge at the same time.

This calls for a collective intervention from all concerned agencies of child grooming; the government, the school and the parents.

Between 2020 and 2021, the government had directed schools to shut down operation temporarily or end the academic term abruptly 4 times. This means parents can no longer take the risk of trying out schools, but have to be sure that the schools have all the requisite tools that can protect the children as schools plan to resume in a matter of month or less.

This is why popular Education Consultant, Adesope Edun is floating school profiling projects for parents to consider before making decisions for their children’s school resumption.

Adesope’s Mcaloeda Media is poised to do the due diligence and consider the best 20 schools to consider ahead of the new academic session and will release the name about a week before resumption of schools.

Speaking with newsmen, Adesope stated that the project is conceived after a cursory look at the challenges faced by schools and parents in the last two terms, trying to adhere to the new normal and getting prepared to fit into the new academic style that the COVID-19 has brought before us.

“We shall be considering so many features from Health, Safety and Environment, and strict adherence to the government conditions of what should be made available for students in this delicate times.

“We will also consider how prepared the schools are with online classes, and how trained the teachers are to align with digital tutorials. Another special or additional advantage can come in to show exceptional academic standard”, he said.

“At the end of the day, we shall be publishing the names of schools that we will be recommending for parents on the national dailies. This will make it easier for the parents to decide. We want to shoulder the responsibility of looking out for the best school for their children”, he added.

Health / Nigeria Moving Towards Cholera Outbreak In IDP Camps – EDWIIN by DebbyJose: 11:04am On Aug 14, 2021
Nigeria is moving close to a major cholera outbreak if urgent sanitary measures are not put in place at the Internal Displaced Camps in the Northeast. The awareness and advocacy for government intervention has intensified, following the surge of cholera outbreak at the Kuchingoro camp in Abuja, where 9 people die within two days and over 246 people were infected.

Author and convener of the Empathy Driven Women International Initiative, EDWIIN, was a guest on Arise TV to discuss the cause of the Cholera outbreak, and urgent measures to take to prevent future occurrences and the fundamental plight of IDP camps in Nigeria.

Read Excerpts..

How did you come to be involved in this particular plight and what was it that drew you to feel you could make a difference?

Okay. I went to work in Abuja, and I asked someone, I said I have been hearing of IDP camp, can I please visit one? And that was in February; this is August. I just couldn’t leave those people. I’ve been going there ever since like every other day. And we have been able to move one stead ahead of the other. I have been able to work with a lot of partners, and I have visited other camps, but I can say that there are some camps that are a little bit more organized, but the problem is the same all over.

Now in Kuchingoro Camp, there is no hospital whatsoever. What you have is just a shop that has one retired matron that comes once every week.

How many people are we looking at?

We’re looking at 1,750 people in one camp, and of course, we are also looking at 255 births between 2016 and 2021; and then we are looking at 400 children, and women and men.

And not only that, we are looking at open defecation. There is just one borehole that works and six tanks to serve 1,750 people. When I said open defecation, it is open defecation. You can imagine 1750 people defecating openly every day. So, a cholera outbreak was imminent, because when we went in there, it was like everybody is just going to die here.

There is another report that 146 people have died from this cholera in Kebbi state, and 2028 persons are infected

Yes. In Kuchingoro, there were over 30 infections, but what we were able to do immediately was administer ORT and then we were able to take some of them to the hospital. But then we lost 9 people in 2 days, not even in one week.

What have they been doing, before you came into the scene?

Well, what they’ve been having is what I can call topical interventions, not integrated interventions, when people come and say they want to help, but they just take pictures and look good before the camera, and they’ll say “we’ve gone to the IDP Camp. We’ve given them food, and all, but we don’t have integrated intervention. So, what I am talking about is that they need at least two more boreholes, and like 1000 litre to the 50,000-litre capacity tank. We need to improve their hygiene. They don’t have water. And even with the boreholes, we still have to talk about pumping the boreholes

Who funds the pumping of the boreholes, how do they pump the borehole? During the day, the water can be pumped, but the water that is pumped to the 6 tanks don’t go round.

So the urgent intervention right now will be two new boreholes out there first. Because even when we intervened with the ORT and lots of sugar and salt to do the mixing, we also had to buy cartons and cartons of water to prepare it.

What can be done to ensure that, they minimise this outbreak for those living in the IDP camps?

What we have to teach them personal hygiene. For us to teach the women skills, because we knew it was not going to be easy working with these women, we took like a week to provide the women with bathing soap, deodorants and everything, because we are going to be working with them. And they were really excited. They were happy because no one had actually come to teach them skills and take their hygiene into consideration. So for them, personal hygiene was like a learning process.

And very importantly I want to say, there’s a lot of infections and STDs in the camp. If you have 255 children between 2016 and now, certainly, a lot of activities have been going on. And so we are working on having the very first reproduction health medical outreach; working with doctors and medical practitioners.

Celebrities / Popular Filmmaker, Olu Micheals Clears The Air Over Misconceived Allegations by DebbyJose: 6:00pm On Aug 09, 2021
Against all the rumours going round on some microblogging handles about top actor and show promoter, Olu Micheals over using his highly reputed travels platform, Forbes Global Project International Limited, for fraudulence purpose, the actor has finally come out to lay all the matters to bare before newsmen on Monday, 09 August 2021.

Recall that some microblogging platforms (name withheld) raised allegations against the actors, based on unconfirmed complaints forwarded to them.

Speaking comprehensively about what transpired, Olu Micheals took time to explain the bottlenecks that come with visa application since the interruption of the deadly covid-19 virus and how the U.S and Canadian Governments have reduced the number of visas to be approved vis-à-vis countries of prospective tourists or intending students.

He reiterated the money-back policy of the company and urged the affected customers to be patient with his brand as every customer who has been affected will be refunded.

He wrote:

On Sunday 25th of July 2021, a publication was made regarding myself (Olushola Micheals ) and Forbes global project international Ltd. I am making this post on behalf of myself and Forbes Global in order to explain and clarify things. Forbes Global Project has a money back guarantee which means that if a client's visa is denied and upon request by the client, we take the necessary steps to refund the client's money between 4 to 8 weeks.

Unfortunately, in recent times, business instability and the harsh economic reality have caused us not to be consistent with the time frame for refund. However, we have always made certain that we stick to our refund policy.

Some Of our affected customers whose names and faces appeared on the Blog post and comment section of the recent publication must have been forced to engage with the Blog for the following reasons:

Firstly, since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out and more particularly from the start of the year 2020, the Canadian High commission reduced issuance of tourist visas and further in the year put it on hold totally. However, we continued to make applications even up until late 2020 and these applications were accepted along with the visa fee by the Embassy But no response was given for several months. As we speak, we still have quite a number of clients who have applied for Canadian tourist visas and till date, their applications are still pending at the embassy.

Some of the clients have been to our office requesting for a refund simply because they can’t wait forever. In response to their requests for refund, we have initiated the process of refund. While some have been paid in full others have been paid in part, even as their applications are pending at the embassy.

Secondly, USA visa applicants are also affected by the effects of the global pandemic. Some of our clients have gotten their appointments while others are still waiting for appointment dates simply because there is no appointment free date until 2022 both at theLagos and Abujaoffices. Despite the above, some of our clients have asked us for a refund as they are running out of patience for their interview dates. We are currently engaged in talks with all our affected clients and must confess that our businesses have been hurt by the negative publication.

Forbes project agrees that there are still quite a number of pending refunds to be made to the affected clients. However, we have never denied the fact that any client who is not pleased with our services has a right to request a refund. We have always pledged to refund our clients upon request. Some of our affected clients have been paid in cash while others have received post-dated cheques as proof of our pledge to refund. All We are asking for is your patience as we take urgent steps to remedy the situation.

We hereby use this medium to appeal to our esteemed clients to please bear with us as every request for refund will be attended to, in due time. To those we failed, we sincerely apologize, yes we aren’t totally exonerating ourselves, we ask for patience and forgiveness.

As an organization that deeply cares for its clients and their welfare, we apologize and appeal to our esteemed clients for their continued patience as we hope to serve you better in the coming days. To all our esteemed clients who are aggrieved by our shortcomings, we ask that you forgive us. And for any further complaints, requests or need for clarification we would be happy to attend to you if you reach us through our usual communication channels.

Health / Cholera Outbreak Rocks IDP Camps, As 9 Die Within One Week by DebbyJose: 2:29pm On Aug 08, 2021
The cholera outbreak in the IDP camps in Nigeria reaffirms its public health threat to the country. Evidence on the current epidemiology of cholera required for the design and implementation of appropriate interventions towards attaining the global roadmap strategic goals for cholera elimination however seems lacking.

Scores of cases of cholera have been reported in Kuchingoro IDP camp with 9 deaths within one week, newsmen report.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by Virbrio cholerae bacteria. It is passed on from faeces through contaminated food, drinks and unhygienic environments, and causes severe dehydration. Infected people can die if their illness is not quickly managed with rehydration

Further investigations by a team of journalists reveal the deplorable state of Kuchingoro IDP that camps no fewer than 1700 persons. The camp has no adequate water, as only one borehole serves the entire population.

Recall that EDWIIN in it's program in July drew the attention of the World Health Organization, WHO, and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC to the rate at which the people in the camper suffer from an inadequate supply of clean water and sewage system, which has been discovered to be the cause of the outbreak.

The inclusive-driven NGO partnered with a number of organizations and schools to provide an emergency intervention in July, but the effect was minimal as donations and contributions served only for a couple of weeks.

Speaking to newsmen on Saturday, August 7, 2021, Uri Ngozichukwuka, the convener lamented the situation at the camp and appeal to government agencies to, as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of the Kuchingoro IDP, and save them from the clutches of the disease, by providing adequate hygienic water supply by constructing boreholes within the camp

Further investigations reveal that the new KUCHINGORO IDP camp has only one functioning borehole that serves over 1700 persons.

The camp has no hospital but a basic drug supply window and a twice-weekly visit by a retired nurse.

Medical aid camp has also been ravaged by STDs and infection due to open defecation, where there is not adequate sewage system.

Some well-meaning Nigerians have been feeding the children daily to keep them in school. As hunger looms over the camp the school is where they readily get at least a meal a day.

“We are calling on well-meaning individuals to help raise the living conditions of these displaced persons”, Uri said in her response to newsmen.

EDWIIN has been partnering with so many groups to bring succour to the camp. Amongst such is The Education Reform group. A team of resolute distinguished professionals concerned with restoring and redefining the education landscape of the country to meet contemporary international standards.

The team lead is Mrs Yemisi Subair, a chartered accountant and an author.

It will be recalled that on May 27th Standard Bearer School's CEO Mrs Modupe Adeyinka Oni also launched the I-Africa which pushes for a rural online school. The children in the IDP CAMP will also be the key recipients of this project.

NGOs continue to bring partners into the camp in so many areas however the cholera epidemic has hit hard with so many deaths within a week.

According to Modupe Oni, one of the volunteers and early education specialists, there is a need to urgently raise the hygiene level and awareness to prevent more deaths.

For material needs, there is an urgent need for a clean soup Kitchen, supply of toiletries, disinfectants soaps. Supply of mattresses and bed sheets and bed frames are also needed.

Interested volunteers and donors are requested to reach out through 08024367544 for updates and donations.

Fashion / Super Model & Entrepreneur, Hope Chioma Offor Partners International Brands by DebbyJose: 3:08pm On Jul 23, 2021
Promotes African Heritage...

Sources have indicated that the international model, global peace ambassador through fashion, Publisher of Hopez Magazine and founder of African Fashion for Peace, Hope Chioma Offor, better known as HOPEZ, is in high spirits these days. She is apparently in negotiations with a very well known international brand, which seeks to bring "the best of Africa to the world"!

It is also being whispered that the model recently made a move to partner with a big player in the nation's real estate market, giving her an avenue to join the investors in the multimillion-dollar investment cadre.

These negotiations are being handled by the high brow Lagos legal firm and Entertainment / Sports law specialists, Arthur Nylander's Chambers, who have been contracted to handle all legal matters relating to the HOPEZ brand.

Attempts to reach out to Leslie Olutayo Nylander SAN the Managing partner of the firm/consortium proved abortive. However, contact was made with Ladipo Johnson Esq. another member of the law firm/consortium who has been spotted on various occasions with Hopez in recent times.

Johnson confirmed the relationship but made it clear that the details of the new relationship with International partners were still being ironed out, but are confidential in nature.

By this development, the very versed attorneys, who also have other celebrity portfolios in the entertainment and sports industries in their account, would relate closely with the key heads of the various outfits and organisations relating with the HOPEZ brand in high fashion and design, real estate and publishing.

Business / Pman Finally Receives Copy Of Proposed Bill To Repeal And Re-enact Copyright Act by DebbyJose: 5:36pm On Jul 07, 2021
The Performing Musicians’ Employers’ Association of Nigeria ((PMAN) has received a copy of the proposed Bill for An Act to Repeal and Re-enact the Copyright Act 2021 from the Clerk of Senate Committee on Trade and Investments, following its protest for not being consulted or informed of the contents of the Bill.

Copies of the proposed Bill have been referred to appropriate organs and committees of PMAN to study and give informed opinion upon which PMAN would base its next line of action in conjunction with any other interested stakeholders in the creative industry.

It would be recalled that PMAN raised alarm on the apparent secrecy with which the Bill appeared to have gone through Second Reading at the floor of the Senate without any input from PMAN and other relevant stakeholders or even a public hearing.

Informed opinion on legislative processes’ watchers was that the Bill would have simply passed the third reading and passed into law had PMAN and other key stakeholders not protested the process.

PMAN reiterates its call to the National Assembly to make the processes of making new laws for Copyright and National Film and Video Censorship open to relevant stakeholders.

From PMAN's initial study of the two Bills, we have discovered serious clash of interests, powers and functions between existing and proposed government regulatory agencies/commissions that would pose great dangers to whatever good intentions the Bills may have and the general interests of stakeholders.

PMAN therefore advises great caution in passing these two Bills.

Thank you,

Pretty Okafor

President.

Education / SBS Partners Ngos, Launches I- Africa, Pushes For Rural Online Education by DebbyJose: 4:31pm On Jul 07, 2021
Dealing with the debilitating impact of insecurity and retrogressing economy, on the education system, several non-governmental organisations, NGOs, involved in dispensing education to rural and economically backward children recently adopted online teaching methods to ensure continuity in education.

For the not-for-profits involved, the switch resulted in developing innovations in their out-reach formats as well as curriculums to meet the challenges of their far-reaching grassroots movement

It is in this line, Lagos based international early learning institution, Standard Bearer School, partnered with renowned Inclusive advocate, EDWIIN, , The Navigators Nigeria, Rice and beans soup kitchen, and EduReform team., and announced the launch of i-Africa School, an online training platform created and optimised for smartphones and available for free learning.

Modupe Oni, renowned educator and the administrator of Standard Bearers Schools, Lekki, who spearheads the i-Africa initiative also added that the prohramme will offer a global platform that would meet the specific needs of African populations, elementary and basic school.

“We want our children to be able to rely on online training to provide a basic curriculum and we target more students in the rural areas. We also want to make sure that students will also be able to take these classes on a personal basis and obtain an online certificate of participation after the sessions,” she continued.

“It is a big step forward, with the African basic schools, which have the potential to positively impact training and thus employment in our countries.”

“We are proud to contribute to this project, which tackles the issue of education for all, combining best practices in digital technology and a new learning experience using ICT”, she said.

Aside from providing a wholesome learning environment that caters to the whole child and meets international standards, Standard Bearer School has remained an advocate for children’s rights to standard education.

SBS also partners with national and local governments to improve educational access and ensure that schools will help children develop their reading and writing skills early. Additionally, they provide education during times of conflict or natural disaster to help decrease time out of school or other educational interruptions

The convener of EDWIIN, Uri Ngozichukwuka speaking with newsmen at the school feeding programme on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 stated that her NGO volunteered to partner with other inclusive platforms, after seeing the need to feed the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs children. She added that the feeding initiative is to improve literacy in the displaced children.

As an inclusive advocate, she said displaced or disabled people, all members of the global education system must be taken into account. She reaffirmed her commitment to the right to education for all.

Education / SBS Lekki Debunks School Shutdown Rumour, Says Lagos State Didn't Visit School by DebbyJose: 2:01pm On Jul 07, 2021
Lagos state government, through the Office of Education Quality Assurance, reportedly hinted that it shut down two schools over the COVID-19 scare on Tuesday, June 6, 2021. The affected school according to an unidentified source from the ministry include Lagoon Girls’ Secondary School and Standard Bearer School.

The management of Standard Bearer has however reached out to the press to debunk the report promulgated by a faceless source.

Modupe Oni, the Executive Director of Standard Bearers School, who painted the true picture of the event stated that it was the school, SBS Lekki that took the initiative and shut the school immediately. It was also the school that informed the Lagos State authority on the situation in the school and the steps she took according to the guidelines laid out by Lagos State Quality Assurance Department in their post COVID protocols.

“No official from the states Ministry of Education or the Quality Assurance has visited our school as at the today".

She went on to explain that

"One of our parents whose whole family have had their full dosage of COVID Vaccine, tested positive to COVID-19. They tested the child who was also positive. Within two hours of hearing the news, we conducted a risk assessment immediately and then decided to shut down the school the following day. We also hinted the authority of the situation of things and the modality that has been fashioned out by the school", she narrates,

She expressed her disappointment over the fabricated narrative, which seems like a deliberate attempt to undermine the school’s long-standing integrity, credibility and value.

“It's very embarrassing to read this news as if the state took punitive measures against us when no such thing happened.

“The story also misrepresented our school as Standard Bearer Secondary School, when our programmes focuses only early learning and grade school”, she said.

Read the schools issued statement below:

*On Sunday, July 4th, 2021, a parent advised the School Management that all members of their family who have had their full dosage of COVID Vaccine, tested positive for COVID.

*On Monday morning, after internal discussions, the School Management contacted LASG to report the case through a written letter and the decision to shut down the school for 14days as stated in the LASG protocol after which an inspection by LASG would be done before re-opening

There are some important points to make about the current situation:

LASG did not raid the school to shut it down and there is no current evidence of COVID in the school population.

SBS followed standard protocol and notified LASG about the facts surrounding the situation.

*Besides, the family is doing well with the sick parent responding to treatment. The child has no symptoms but on medical consultations with a professional public health practitioner the school decided to shut down in an effort to contain any spread.

Whilst joining the Parent in prayers for full recovery, we also use this medium to urge the public in adhering to the COVID 19 safety rules at all times whether vaccine had been received or not.

Olusola Seriki

Chairman,

Standard Bearers School,

Lekki – Lagos*

The management however demands a retraction and apology for the misleading publication.

Dupe Oni is a renowned educator and stateswoman. She is one of the very few women who have helped shape the society we live in today, using the most powerful tool available: Education. She is providing quality education to the children through her early learning program. She has been doing this for the past 23 years and has managed to build a world-class citadel of learning in the heart of Lekki, in Lagos, Standard Bearers School, an early learning institution where academic and creative talents were given similar priorities.

Business / CIG Backs PMAN, Rejects Senate’s Backdoor Attempt To Repeal 2004 Copyright Act by DebbyJose: 9:40am On Jul 06, 2021
The Creative Industry Group, CIG has waded into the ongoing rift between the Performing Musicians’ Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), and the Red Chamber of the House of Assembly over the decision of the latter to re-enact the 2004 Copyright Act
PMAN in a press release made available to the media, kicked against the speed and secrecy shrouding the repeal and re-enactment of the Copyright Act 2004.
The PMAN’s president, Pretty Okafor, stated that the process to repeal the Act and re-enact a new one without consulting notable groups and associations in the creative industry had confounded all expectations.
Spokesperson of CIG, Nosa Omoregie in his statement, said that the decision of the legislature to carry out such an inimical act is a deliberate attempt to silence all forms of labour union and movement in the country. He also urged all concerned stakeholders in the creative industry not to fold their arms in this open robbery by the power that be.
He said:
The Creative Industry Group, received the news of the decision of the legislature to repeal the 2004 Act and re-enact a new one without duly involving the key people concerned, with shock.
It is an aberration to even think that the law-making cabals who are supposed to understand the ingredients of democracy are the same people who are abusing them.
We will like to state categorically that the CIG as a mouthpiece of every creative mind in Nigeria will not accept or negotiate any law or Act that bothers on the affair of the industry without having them take part in the process.
Our fate and destiny will not be decided by those who have no idea of what our industry is about.
We dare say it is an affront and assault to the collective intelligence of every content creator in the industry and we will not be silent about it
Nosa urged Nigerians to be calm and wait for the response of the Nigerian legislature to these grave accusations before the next step will be decided..

Politics / Pman Exposes Secret Repeal And Re-enactment Of The Copyright Act by DebbyJose: 8:40am On Jul 02, 2021
The Performing Musicians’ Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN) has reacted to the news of the impending repeal and re-enactment of the Copyright Act (Cap. C.28 Law of the Federation of Nigeria) 2004.

PMAN’s reaction was based on the apparent speed and secrecy with which the Bill to repeal the Act and re-enact a new one was shrouded.

About two weeks ago, the media (both print and electronic) were agog with the news that the Bill to repeal and re-enact the Copyright Act 2004 2021 has passed second reading at the floor of the Senate.

PMAN hearing and reading this news, contacted notable groups and associations in the creative industry, particularly, the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN) and the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), all which denied any knowledge of the Bill and its contents. We then became very apprehensive that some sinister motives are at play to halt and reverse the progress already made in the field of copyright administration and enforcement.

PMAN immediately wrote a formal letter to the Senate Leadership, specifically, the Senate President, the joint Chairmen of Senate Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Trade and Investments, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Minority Leader, Senate Chief Whip among others, to express PMAN’s concern over a Bill that touches upon the livelihood and constitutional rights of Nigerian Musicians without their knowledge or input. PMAN’s simple request was that it should be availed of a copy of the Bill to at least know what it contains and if necessary, make input.

PMAN did not stop there; we wrote a letter to the sponsor of the Bill, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, expressing the same concern and requesting the Distinguished Senator to recall the Bill for stakeholders’ consideration. We received a very nice and swift reply from Senator Abiru who advised us to access the Bill from a link which he gave as www.nass.gv.ng. From our attempts, we discovered that the link does not exist and we used our initiative to access the National Assembly website and found that the said Bill was not among the posted Bills pending consideration before the National Assembly (both the Senate and the House of Representatives). We then rightly assumed that we were deliberately sent on a wild goose chase by the Distinguished Senator and came to the incontrovertible conclusion that certain forces are pushing the Bill secretly while trying to present the image that the process is open.

PMAN rejects this process in its entirety, noting that the Sponsor of the Bill, Senator Abiru, is not an author, painter, artist or a musician. As far as we know, we are not able to trace any interest to him that could be classified as copyright-related that would make him so interested in pushing a Bill that would affect the lives and constitutional rights of millions of Nigerian stakeholders without their knowledge and input.

We have contacted our allies in other organisations and associations and they expressed the same worries. Some have actually written to the Senate Leadership expressing their concerns.

Our concern is more fuelled by a recent Public Hearing held on 16th and 17th June 2021 by the House of Representatives’ Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values on the Bill to Repeal the National Film and Video Censor’s Board Act and Enact the National Film and Video Censorship, Classification and Exhibition Regulatory Commission Bill 2019 in its place. Up to the date of that Public Hearing, stakeholders in the industry were not aware of the Bill and its contents.

PMAN is stating for the umpteenth time and the records that the works of our intellects, which consist of literary works, musical works, artistic works, cinematograph films, sound recordings and our performances are our private property. They are our Constitutional and Fundamental Human Rights. Any attempt to tamper with them with a view to appropriate them for anybody or authority be it private or public shall be resisted.

PMAN calls on other stakeholders in the entire creative industry to rise and team up for the defence of their moral and economic rights.

PMAN also calls on the leadership of the National Assembly both at the Senate and House of Representatives to thread softly on these Bills until the real stakeholders have made their inputs and had their say.

Thank you.

Culture / Erelu Tinuade Frowns At Installation Of Chinese Woman As Iyalaje Of Iru-land by DebbyJose: 6:03pm On Jun 26, 2021
.....Says Our Heritage Is Next After Selling Our Economy To China.

Highly respected international custodian of African cultures, who is also the traditional title holder of Erelu Oodua of Aye Kingdom, Erelu Tinuade Mabel Onaneye has expressed dismay and sadness over the installation of a Chinese woman, called, MsDiana Chen as Iyalaje of Iru Land, by His Royal Majesty, Oba Omogbolahan Wasiu Lawal, the Oniru of Iru Land. The Oba is expected to know the significance of Aje Olokun and its spiritual connotations. His action depicts that the Yoruba people have no capable daughters of Iru or Lagos to occupy the seat of Iyalaje of Iru.
On behalf of Omo kaaro ojire daughters, she implores Kabiyesi Omogbolahan to revoke such a title from the Chinese woman.

Speaking from her base in United States, Erelu lamented how recent happenings back in Nigeria has exposed many monarchs who contributed to the rots in our system and cultures.

"We are not all unmindful of how Chinese are gradually taking over our economy and enslaving our youths for peanuts. It is now clear our heritage is next after selling our economy to China." Erelu lamented.

She demanded to know what the monarch concerned stands to gain by desecrating the sacred stool that predates him by assigning traditional titles to strangers as if we longer have accomplished sons and daughters who should be conferred with such titles.

Citing a case study of Germany and entire Europe, she noted that such pecuniary drive of awarding chieftaincy to every Dick and Harry made the traditional monarchs lose respect and eventually their kingdoms to political powers which later converted their castles i.e palaces to museums and tourist centre.

In conclusion, Erelu enjoined all traditional rulers to refrain from bringing shame and dishonour to the house of Oduduwa all in the name of money and bastardized our traditional institution.
