This is another apparent example that Nigeria is not fit to practice democracy at any level. If president should use tinted glass vehicles in Nigeria, everybody is qualified to use them. The announcement by the minister on the use of tinted glass vehicles is despicable act of creating social class distinction within Nigerian society.

It is shame to the so-called government of the people, by the people and for the people. This present government under GEJ is oligarchy rather than democracy. If I am one of the services chiefs, I should start contemplating the means to throw these fools out of office.

Politics › Re: Effiong's Thoughts On The Civil War by Dede1(m): 7:53pm On Feb 24, 2011
If not for mere symbolism, why would Nigerian vandals ever want to capture Nnewi? Nnewi is just a hometown of Ojukwu and had no military strategic importance to Biafra. Granted the town provided home to the headquarter of 11th Division of Biafra army that defended Onitsha ferociously, Nigeria's 2nd Division would have rushed  to Uli airport without setting eyes on Nnewi.

The same scenario goes to Ikot Ekpene. Both 1st Division and 3MCDO did not have to capture Ikot Ekpeme to threaten Aba or Umuahia if not again that Ikot Ekpene is a hometown of Gen Effiong.

It should have been defended. After the fall of Ikot Ekpene, the Igbo heartland was vulnerable. Attacks on Umuahia and Aba meant the end of Biafra.

Effiong is a person hero of mine. He always spoke the truth. God bless his soul.
[/quote]This is beyond the pale of my imagination and a statement borne of out sentiments. Granted that Effiong was one of the Biafrans officers that had my reserved unflinching loyalty, the defense of Ikot Ekpene with his reference to defense of Nnewi has no military strategic values. He spoke like unseasoned veteran on that subject. Ikot Ekpene was not more strategically important to Biafra than Calaber, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Onitsha, Ogoja, Owerri, Uyo, Oron or Ibano.

This is the reason why I keep saying that Igbos should become hardened tribalist and not give a 4k about anyone who does not give a 4k about them. Nigerians hate the Igbo and the must in return hate Nigerians even more with exception of their neighbors but at the same time must demand respect. The only thing that will save us is when we harden ourselves in the way we treat others. Whether we perform magic for Nigeria we will still be hated and envied hence we should in fact do all those things we are accused of doing. I mean its better to be hated for something u are doing not what u are not doing. Rather than try to fix economy of Nigeria Okonjo and Soludo should have helped tank and destroy it completely hell after all all Nigerians will feel the pinch. We should view the Nigerian state the way Jews view Arabs. No love but pure contempt. Igbo must strive to destroy that cesspit till they Nigerians start begging us to freaking declare our own nationhood. We must frustrate that nation economically the way the Ijaw are doing by blowing up oil pipelines. If it means going back to re-invent the Ogbunigwe bomb then so be it. Let Nigerians regret ever having us as a part of their entity not the other way round.
You very very correct. However, Ironsi was a regrettable military interloper. It must be recall that concerted efforts by certain people such as M I Okpara gave Awolowo the second chance in life to stick it on Ndigbo.  If Awo had been sent to Nigerian prisons in Bauchi, as planed by Balewa’s government, the Kanuri cooks were meant to kick miserable life out of Awo. There was no doubt that Awo obituary would have been circulated by Nigerian dailies even before the start of civil war.

If you have taken a trip in the luxurious buses built by ANNAMCO which are currently plying Nigerian roads and still support the idiotic decision by UDBN, NLC and TUC to buy luxurious buses from China, you should be tied to a stake and allow to die slowly under the intensive heat of the sun.

So UDBN, TUC, and NLC are not under the federal government's watch and people are complaining? They can buy buses from whoever they want. undecided
You are quite a reasonable fellow and I do not expect you to post this deceptive write-up. There is nothing private about UDBN. It is privately owned as corporations such Nigerian Railway Corporation. The appointment of the Director or the CEO of the UDBN is not decided by share holders but federal government of Nigeria through the right ministry.

Could you explain how NLC and TUC factor into buying buses from the money set aside to help private transporters such ABC, Ekene Dili Chukwu, Izuchukwu, Young Shall Grow, Aba/Lagos Promoters, etc?

NLC and TUC do not own or operate a wheel on the Nigerian roads.

Look, Nigeria is not as civilised as countries in the West. How could Biafra have targetted infrastructure in places such as Kano, Kaduna, Lagos etc? Are you suggesting that they would have used Northerners to carry out such attacks in the North or Westerners to carry out such attacks in the West? If your argument is that Igbo sons could have carried out such attacks, then you are more naive than I thought. Any terrorist attacks in the North or West would have simply resulted in the lynching and murder of Igbo sons in those places whether they were complicit or not. That is the fact of the matter.
You need to understand the acts of guerrilla warfare. It is not frontal attack but covert and could not be traceable to any particular group. The “no victor no vanquish” pronouncement by Gowon really calmed many nerves down after the war.

If the Nigerian soldiers has resorted to acts of belligerent towards Biafrans, the clandestine operations would have ensured. Explosions would have been heard as faraway as Sokoto.

The reference of lynching Igbo or Biafrans for explosion that occurred in Lagos or Kaduna is ludicrous as best. I had waited for people in your mindset to engage in acts of lynching Ijaw everywhere simply because untraceable bombs allegedly exploded by MEND in Abuja or Jos. No reasonable country will want to dream a situation where inhabitants will resort to guerrilla warfare.

How is it that you seek to trivialise such an important even by talking about soldiers cavorting with woman? What does that add or remove from the conduct or outcome of the war?

Your post is again flawed on several accounts

1. The Yoruba soldiers in the Army swore an oath to defend Nigeria; they didn't swear an oath to defend Biafra or Oduduwa land for that matter. Are you suggesting that all Yoruba officers should have resigned their office or command? That is simply daft; a soldier defends a nation against both external and internal enemies. During the civil war, Biafra was the enemy. For the record, all soldiers had been asked with returning to the regions of origin before commencement of hostilities. Even the soldiers in the mid-west were not engaged in the war until the Biafran incursion into the mid-west; after that incident, Gowon mobilised sons, who were civilians, from the mid-west and west. Most of the soldiers in Murtala's second division were new recruits.

2. Igbo sons as well as other Ijaw and Ibiobio sons (Ike Nwachukwu, Ekpo, Innih, Ochiefu, Boro) fought against their won people

3. How did you determine the ethnicity of the women that cavorted with soldiers in Lagos? How did you determine the ethnicity of the soldiers in question? Did you conduct a survey? Is this another of your unsubstantiated claims. Please prove me wrong if you can. At that time, Lagos was the Capital and people from all over Nigeria were residing in it. Also, how is it that Ariyo got to Calabar and saw the inhumane action meted to Lagos girls in Calabar. Even a new born baby will tell you thats a big lie as Yoruba people are not known to travel that far. Even in peace time, it was unlikely that there were large numbers of Yoruba women in the East talk less of during a war. Please find another lie.

Lastly, it is on record that Murtala's 2nd division murdered men in cold blood at Asaba. How then do you explain the union of Igbo women in Asaba such as Mariam Babangida to Ibrahim Babangida who was one of the commanders in the 2nd division? Was that a case of 'Stockhom syndrome'? Remember the saying that those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. There are virtuous and unvirtuous people in every tribe and race; your attempt at painting a particular group as being unvirtuous was pathetic.
I guess the majority of Biafrans soldiers did not swear the same oath to defend Nigeria as the Yoruba in Nigeria armed force did. What a skewed and preposterous statement.

Frankly, I shall not take credit in uncovering the acts of open session declared by soldiers of north region on Yoruba girls in Lagos and western region. The people such as Lt Col Ayo-Ariyo, Agbekoya and Soyinka saw the behaviors of these soldiers from northern region and reacted accordingly. Again, Lt Col Ayo-Ariyo was among the first batch soldiers of 3MCDO that landed in Calaber in 1967. However when he visited Lagos on official duty, he could not comprehend while he should be fighting Biafrans while soldiers from northern region were busy under the skirts of Yoruba girls. He promptly resigns his commission into Nigeria army. He was not only brave but courageous and exemplary.

I can recall that Ibrahim Babangida fought in 1st Division’s operational area during war. The issue of Asaba massacre by elements of 2nd Division of Nigeria army is akin to clutching a straw in this discuss. War was fought and peace later prevailed. It should not stop any matrimonial engagement between former warring groups. It is not for discern the reason behind the mutual attraction between Ibrahim and Mariam.

Dede1

Do you read the stuff you write at times before posting? Nigeria was not scared to fight Biafra on Biafran soil; why would it be scared to fight Tanzania, Ivory Coast, or any other African country on Nigerian soil? As for guerrilla warfare, that was a non-starter as Ojukwu had fled and no one else really had the stomach for a fight. Besides, the only people who would have suffered from guerilla warfare in Biafra were Biafrans as no one else lived there. You may kill a Nigerian soldier every now and then but the soldiers would have taken their pound of flesh from innocent civilians. Plus, continued war-fare would have prevented normalcy returning to Biafra i.e commerce, education, subsistence, etc.

Gowon, not being a mad man, declared no victor no vanquished, so as to re-integrate Biafra into Nigeria quickly as it was in everyone benefit. Don't forget that the conflict was between parts of the same country so there was no need for the continued humiliation of the Eastern people. If it had being Murtala or another mad Northerner, they wouldn't have declared no victor, no vanquished.
You will not understand the effects of guerrilla warfare in country such as Nigeria. Of course, Nigeria may not be afraid of waging war against Biafra or any military support from the countries you mentioned but I seriously do not think Nigeria would afford clandestine warfare mounted against its economic foundation.

The acts of sabotage to the Nigerian economic infrastructures in faraway places like Kano, Lagos and Kaduna as well as in deltas could not be instantly point to the Igbo or Biafrans so any pound of flesh you talk about could be misdirected and would backfire too. So Ojukwu being out of the picture and the announcement of “no victor no vanquish” by Gowon was a stroke of diplomacy.
Politics › Re: Why I Went To Cote D'ivorie; I Didn't Run Away - Ojukwu by Dede1(m): 2:37pm On Feb 23, 2011
At least, Ojukwu stood his ground against drunken aggressors for almost three years while getting the noises of the military interlopers bloody. This can not be said about those who apparently shook in their pants at the sight of drunken northern Nigeria soldiers.

One of them had to sail to UK instead of fly via Ikeja airport. Another had to scamper to neighboring country, Dahomey. The worst sin any human being can commit as a result of cowardice was act of lining up to serve the aggressor who have murdered the son of the soil in Ibadan, the Oduduwa’s administrative and capital city.

Talking of providing services to northern drunken soldiers is bad already but to supply the soldiers with beautiful Yoruba girls for night duty is the height of indecency. The Yoruba had already lined up to fight for soldiers from northern region but to hand the keys of their houses and let them use the ladies in awkward position is absurdity.

I must add, though, not all Yoruba people partook in the aforementioned abominable behaviors. There were men among them and tribute must be paid to such rare men with balls from the stock. For example, Lt Col J. Ayo-Ariyo came to Lagos from Calaber on official duty in 1967 and saw the bottom strokes meted out to Lagos girls by soldiers from northern region; he resigned his commission from Nigerian army with immediate effect and refused to fight Biafrans. Even the Agbekoya and Omopupa thought they have seen enough and decided to engage the Gowon and Nigerian army with sticks and cutlasses. Wole Soyinka felt it was better to live in prison than watch the drunken soldiers from northern region desecrate the Yoruba land with impunity, rascality and sexually massaged the bodies of Yoruba women in a manner that was rather imagined than seen.

It is foolhardy to mouth off on Ojukwu who refused to subscribe to the silly notion that “northerners are born to rule” and thought the men from Caliphate that southern Nigeria still have men with balls.

It is foolhardy to preach prudent to a government that does not know where to channel resources which are vital to the viability of the local economy.

Sometimes in future, if people find it hard to impregnate their wives, they will lay the blame on GEJ.

It is very shameful you stayed awake with empty claims of Benjamin Adekunle schooling anybody during the war. Those who fought alongside or faced him in the battle have repeatedly said the GOC of 3MCDO was a loudmouth at best.

Practical evidences have showed Adekunle was/is nobody in the annals of Nigeria-Biafra war. The fall of Port Harcourt, Calaber, Owerri, Aba, Uyo, Ikot Ekpene and Oguta were combinations of efforts by 1st Division, Nigerian navy and lack of weaponry on Biafran side.

However, when few factors of hindrance were set aside as evidenced in the eviction of 3MCDO from Oguta, Owerri and onward retreat to Port Harcourt, the divisional field commanders and army headquarter in Lagos did not waste time to dismiss Adekunle as commander. Adekunle had been adjudged as the worst Nigerian divisional commander during war. Anybody commander graded below Murtala Muhammed should not have worn green uniforms.

By the way, he was not 28yrs old by 1966. If you can not even quote the correct age of your so-called hero, it tells much about your mental stability.

Anybody who presumptuously called Ojukwu a coward should be likened to a leaf on trees. It is either the punk has not experience intrigues of a battle or completely aloof to the doctrines of warfare. A brave man fights to live so as to fight another day.

If Ojukwu had be killed during the wee hours of 1970 that saw cessation of hostility between Nigeria and Biafra, the people of Biafra would have become open session to Nigerian vandals. It was the fear of continuous act of guerrilla warfare by Biafrans and Ojukwu;s sudden re-entering the war with troops backed by Africans nations that recognized Biafra led to the declaration of “ no victor and no vanquish” by Nigerian government.
