PoliticsTo Hell With You, Yaradua Tells Buhari. by DeepZone(op): 10:01pm On Oct 04, 2008
Yar’Adua fires back at Buhari

By Ihuoma Chiedozie, Abuja

President Umaru Yar’Adua on Thursday said he had not made overtures to the presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party in the April 21, 2007, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, because he believed that he (Buhari) was “swimming against the tide.”

Although he explained that his action was not borne out of contempt for Buhari, Yar’Adua said he strongly believed that the Katsina State-born general had a weak case in the Supreme Court.

Buhari and his counterpart in the Action Congress, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, are currently seeking to have Yar’Adua’s victory in the election upturned on the grounds of irregularities and his inelligibility to contest the poll.

Buhari had while speaking on the Hausa Service of the Voice of America on Wednesday, admitted that he had shunned a series of entreaties from the ANPP and some northern leaders to withdraw the case.

He explained that he was pressing on with the suit because Yar’Adua had not deemed it fit to plead with him or send somebody to him to have a rethink.

“He (Yar’Adua) has never called me; and he has never sent anybody to me to plead so that I will withdraw the suit against him”, the former Head of State had said.

However, Yar’Adua told State House correspondents through his Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr. Segun Adeniyi, that he was waiting for the conclusion of the case in the Supreme Court before he could approach Buhari.

Adeniyi said Yar’Adua was of the view that reaching out to Buhari, or any other person involved in the legal cases against him, could be misconstrued by political opponents.

Adeniyi said, “It is true that President Yar’Adua has not reached out to Maj.-Gen. Buhari but that is largely out of respect that the general is exploring all the available legal and democratic channels as well as his own abiding belief in the rule of law.

“Since the general is in court challenging the results of the presidential election which he lost, the President is of the opinion that any overtures could be misconstrued so he would rather want the judicial process completed before reaching out to the ANPP candidate.”

He added that Yar’Adua believed that since Buhari had a very weak case, he was unlikely to succeed in having the outcome of the poll overturned.

This, belief, according to him, was informed by the relationship between Buhari and the leadership of the ANPP, which is not backing him in court.

The Presidential spokesman said, “From all indications, the general has a rather weak case in court, which, if what we read in the media is correct, may not even enjoy the backing of his own political party.

“So in effect, the general is swimming against the tide as far as this case is concerned.”

He, however, added that Buhari could still have an opportunity to contribute to the development of the country, as Yar’Adua does not believe in “winner-takes-all politics”.

Adeniyi said, “The President will be very willing to invite Buhari to join the government in the task of building a greater Nigeria, once the Supreme Court finally validates his mandate.

“I am sure the Supreme Court will soon give a final seal on the whole electoral matter and the President is confident he would win after which he will then reach out to Buhari to join him in the task of moving Nigeria forward.

“As a former leader reputed for his integrity, Gen. Buhari definitely has a lot to still contribute to our nation and I am sure President Yar’Adua would not hesitate to reach out to him once the case at the Supreme Court is won and lost.”

Popularity of Chinese automobiles soars in Nigeria

By Sulaiman Adenekan

The gradual acceptance of Chinese automobile technology in Nigeria has received a boost as big firms, government agencies and hospitals are taking to the brands.

For instance, less than two year after they arrived Nigerian, both Geely and Cheery cars manufacturers have increased their supplies to the country by over 200 per cent each.

The Managing Director, Hyra Motors, Mr. Seyi Oyinlola said no fewer than 800 units of Geely had been sold and currently on the nation’s roads in the last one year.

His counterpart for Cheery, Mr. David Bakare, who gave a similar report at the ongoing Lagos Motor Fair, singled out Tiggo as having an upper hand in terms of accepatance and the number of units sold.

He said, “We have eight models and all of them are doing well, but I can tell you that Tiggo is the model responsible for Cherry’s success in this market because it was the first to gain wide acceptance and its wonderful performance has convinced the people about the brand.”

The Vice-President, Geely Motors, Mr. Yang Jian, at a forum in Lagos, last year, said that the growing popularity of the new cars was global and not peculiar to Nigeria .

For instance, he said that the Chinese firm had made 40,000 unit sales this year through its overseas outlets.

The figure, he said, represented 400 per cent increase over what it recorded last year.

Motoring experts and analysts, who expressed no surprise at the instant success of the Chinese vehicles, said it was due to their relative cheap prices.

According to Bakare, the volume of his company’s sales increases every year.

He recalled that the company last year’s highest single sale was between 10 and12 units, but this year, the auto dealer had recorded sales in batches of hundreds and more.

He said, “A year ago, the largest volume we delivered at a go was between 10 and 12 units, but this year we delivered in batches of hundreds.

“Recently, we delivered to teaching hospitals, university, this month we just delivered 40 units to a private school in Ibadan, and this goes to make a statement, because when you are new in the market, people would say okay these products are cheap let me try it, but after three years when they start buying in large volumes it then means the products are good, it shows the brands are here to stay, not just Chery but also BYD.”

He said that his company stormed the Lagos auto show with all the brands on its stable including Cherry, BYD, and its new Executive Coach Builders brands, adding that the long awaited Cherry A5 was also unveiled at the show.

About the BYD brands, Bakare said that apart from the two models currently in the Nigeria market; his company planned to take delivery of about three more models before the end of the year.

This, he said, would boost the brand and also allow for variety of choices.

Former Chief of Army Staff, General Victor Malu, on life support at LUTH
By AZOMA CHIKWE
Friday, October 3, 2008

Former Chief of Army Staff, General Victor Malu is on life support system at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos.

https://nigeriaworld.com/images/news/big/war/malu1.jpg

The ex-Army chief went into a coma and was rushed to the hospital by security aides and family members on September 25.

Sources at the hospital told Daily Sun that Malu, reportedly suffering from diabetes, was admitted into the ICU of the teaching hospital and doctors battled to save his life.

According to the sources, the consultant in charge of the ex-Army chief’s case diagnosed him of suffering from: “Left thalamic intracellular harmorghic with intraventricular extension in a known diabetic type 2.”

As at press time, Gen. Malu has been revived and it was gathered that he might be flown abroad for further treatment if necessary.

“He is still on oxygen in the ICU, when he gets enough strength, he is expected to be flown abroad to see his personal doctor. Now he is awake, but if he will have to be flown abroad the consultant in charge of his case, Dr Okubanjo will decide,” a source said.

Daily Sun gathered that LUTH could effectively handle the ex-Army chief’s case, as his ailment, diabetes type 2, is common at LUTH.

It was, however, feared that the ailment had degenerated to the extent that “if he has a sore, it may take long to heal.”

Before being rushed to LUTH, Gen. Malu was said not to be a patient at the hospital. He could not be flown abroad immediately the crisis started, according to the sources, because he was too weak to travel.

Since Gen. Malu’s admission into LUTH, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Akin Osibogun had paid regular visits to the ICU to see him.

Just days before Malu was rushed to LUTH, Prof. Osibogun had lamented that a big challenge the institution faced was that patients did not seek medical advice early enough.

“If patients seek medical advice early enough, it will make the work of doctors in the hospital easier,” he had said.

Daily Sun’s sources rated patients’ chances of survival at the hospital’s intensive care unit at 50-50.

There is a strong feeling that Gen. Malu, a former commander of the West African peace outfit, ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia may pull through with the great interest shown in his case.

Meanwhile, family members, friends and colleagues had been paying visits to the hospital to wish the Army General quick recovery.

LUTH Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Babajide Grillo confirmed to Daily Sun that Malu was receiving treatment in the hospital, but declined further comments.

General Malu was between 1996 and 1998, the commander of the ECOMOG in Liberia.

He was the longest serving ECOMOG commander, and was at the centre of disarmament of factions fighting for the control of political authority in that country.
