It is likely Obama was conceived on that euphoric night John F. Kennedy was elected
By JESSICA BENNETT

The theory is almost too perfect to be true. Barack Obama, the son of politically progressive parents, was born Aug. 4, 1961—almost nine months to the day after John F. Kennedy was elected to the White House. Is it possible Obama was conceived on that historic night?

And if so, could history repeat itself? In the hours and days since Obama's victory, many of his exhilarated supporters have been, shall we say, in the mood for love. And though it's too soon to know for sure, experts aren't ruling out the possibility of an Obama baby boom—the kind of blip in the national birth rate that often follows a seismic event, whether it's scary (a terrorist attack) or celebratory (the end of World War II). "The mood of the country and the optimism about leadership is always somewhat related to birth rates," says Dr. Manny Alvarez, chief of reproductive science at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. "I'm gearing up for a healthy increase."

Hope and euphoria, says University of Washington sociologist Pepper Schwartz, are a serious aphrodisiac. And voters under 30 went for Obama by a margin of 2 to 1. When you combine those two elements—randy people of child-bearing age—the likely result is what the online Urban Dictionary has already dubbed "Obama Babies" : children "conceived after Obama was proclaimed President, by way of celebratory sex." "If the amount of alcohol, happy people and major functions on election night is any indication, I suspect we'll indeed see a boom," says 25-year-old Brandon Mendelson, a graduate student in Albany, N.Y., who says he changed his vote at the last minute because "I wanted to be able to tell our future children that we voted for Obama."

Anecdotal evidence abounds. "On election night, my husband had managed to down a bottle and a half of wine in celebration and he was all about making an 'Obama election baby'," Abbi Whitaker, 32, of Reno, Nev., told NEWSWEEK. "He thought it would be the coolest thing." In Oakland, jewelry designer Meghan Connolly Haupt, who, with her husband, has been trying for a baby for about eight months, says she "was optimistic when I realized election night coincided with my ovulation time." And in Chicago, where 28-year-old Chip Bouchard—a former Hillary supporter—attended Obama's acceptance speech, he says he looked over at his boyfriend, Chris, and thought: "This [is] the president under whom I [want to] get married and adopt a baby."

Not everyone's experiences were quite as earnest. During one round of election-fueled romance, says Eric Davis, 37, of Minneapolis, "my wife accidentally said, 'Oh, Obama!'" Craigslist boards in various cities swiftly filled with posts from people looking to form impromptu, um, political action committees. "Feel great from Obama win, but now need to expend this positive energy," wrote one 30-year-old Manhattanite. "Obama! Red Wine! Smooching!" promised another. (And from the too-much-information department, sex shop Babeland, which has stores in Seattle, New York and Los Angeles, reports a 26 percent sales increase since Election Day.)

In order for an Obama baby boom to come to fruition, the sex craze will have to last a while. In August of 2007, the last year for which August birth records are available, Americans bore some 390,000 babies. In demographic terms, to achieve even a tiny boom, the number of babies conceived this month will need to exceed that figure. "So the question," says Florida State University demographer Woody Carlson, "is whether or not this catches on. If it's just a moment of excitement and then everybody goes back to being depressed, then we may see a tiny birth spike. But if it continues, then the birth rate next August"—nine months from now—"could be the start of something big." So get busy, folks. One of these kids might just grow up to be president.

Politics / 22 Philipinos Nabbed Again For Oil Bunkering In Nigeria by DeepZone: 10:12am On Nov 17, 2008
Again, JTF nabs 22 Filipinos for oil bunkering
From Segun James in Yenagoa and Omon-Julius Onabu in Warri, 11.16.2008
Sunday, November 16, 2008

The fact that foreigners are the major players in the bunkering activities along the nation’s waterways was again proved right at the weekend when security operatives nabbed 22 Filipinos with 12,000 metric tonnes (84,000 barrels) of crude oil in the Warri area of Delta State.

A

The arrest of the Filipinos is coming barely four months after another set of 14 Filipinos were arrested at the Brass area of Bayelsa State for indulging in similar offence.

The 22 Filipinos were arrested aboard a foreign registered vessel, MT AKUADA at the Escravos area of Warri.

THISDAY gathered that the ship was operating under a fictitious name of MT KUA when it was arrested, but a search through the document soon revealed the original name of MT AKUADA.

The ship was said to be moving from one vandalised oil pipeline to the other lifting oil when it was arrested.

The JTF in a statement by its Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, Lt. Col. Rabe Abubakar, claimed that the security outfit was respo-nsible for the arrest. The claim was however debu-nked by his Naval counterpart from the Warri Naval Base, NNS Delta, Lt. Sikiru Adigun, who accused the JTF of laying claim to an assignment handled by the navy. The task force had in a statement claimed that: “The JTF in its intensified effort to eradicate illegal oil bunkering and other related sabotage-activities in the Niger-Delta, has yet intercepted and arrested a vessel, MT AKUADA carrying 12,000 metric tonnes of suspected bun-kered crude oil with 22 Filipinos on board”.

“The vessel was arrested while transiting Escravos waters in Delta state”, it further said, adding, “Preliminary investigation conducted aboard the ship revealed that the vessel’s actual name was MT AKUADA and the product it was conveying was illegal oil from Bedfut Point in Delta State, obtained from crude oil thieves using barges.

“The JTF is committed to carrying out its statutory duties taking into consideration the rule of law and due process and at the same time will continue to apprehend the illegal oil bunkerers wherever they may be operating and whoever is involved.

“At least we are gradually catching up with the big guns in illegal oil business. Details will be made public as soon as possible,” the taskforce stated.

In its counter claim, Adigun said, the Navy arrested the vessel and informed the authorities of JTF, Op RH about the development.

Adigun said: “At about 9 am on Friday, the Naval patrol intercepted a foreign ship with suspected crude oil of about 12,500 metric tonnes at Escravos Bar transiting out of channels.

Also, the Commanding Officer of NNS Delta, Navy Capt. Peter Agba, corroborated Adigun’s claim that the JTF’s action is an attempt to claim credit for a feat it did not work for.

However, the JTF spok-esman, Abubakar has said that the outfit had begun to find answers to the frequently asked question on its failure in the past to apprehend the masterminds of the illegal oil bunkering operations in the region.

“At least we are gradually catching up with the big guns in illegal oil business”, an excited Abubakar told THISDAY. He said members of the public would soon be given details of the latest development involving foreign saboteurs of the Nigerian economy.

On July 10 this year, 14 Filipinos were arrested in similar circumstances, on board a Panamanian vessel, MV Lina.

The 14 Filipinos who were later paraded before newsmen in Warri on Wednesday, July16, 2008 include Ray P. Chavez (who is the Captain of the vessel), Nelso Corpin, Antonio Norgino, Tirso Olaviar, Jerome Competente, Joselin Gabion and Rexy Aldovino. Others are Rito Bajoyo, Jun Garcenila, Judel Garcenila, Eugeno Mediano, Mark Jordan Dimaano, Jose Evelito Palimero and Louis Givesania.

The dust raised following the subsequent arraignment and release of the 14 suspects on bail by the relevant security agencies in Nigeria has hardly settled.

Oshiomhole foils plot to loot govt lodge
•Threatens to Arrest Osunbor

From Ike Abonyi and Juliana Taiwo in Abuja, 11.15.2008

Saturday, November 15, 2008

The new governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in the early hours of Friday morning foiled an attempt by some suspected aides of former Governor Oserhiemen Osunbor to loot the Edo State Governor’s Lodge located along T.Y.Danjuma Crescent Asokoro, Abuja.

Oshiomhole who at the time was granting THISDAY his first print media interview since his swearing-in as governor, was suddenly alerted around 12 midnight yesterday and immediately led his personal security detail to intercept some property that was being carted away.

Police personnel at the lodge confirmed that Osunbor and his wife were there earlier in the day, but they could not confirm if they supervised the removal of the items from the lodge.

In reaction to the development, Oshiomhole threatened to arrest his predecessor “if the looting and vandalisation of government property is not discontinued and the stolen items returned immediately.”

THISDAY was conducting an interview with Oshiomhole in his private residence in Maitama when he received intelligence reports that suspected aides of Osunbor were in the lodge removing some items.

Oshiomhole immediately contacted the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro. But before Oshiomhole and his men could reach the lodge, most of the items in the lodge including cars, doors and window blinds, tables, chairs and electrical items like chandeliers, among others had been removed.

Oshiomhole and his team however intercepted some items including a new Hilux pick up truck (without registration plates) that was fully loaded with household items.

The driver of the vehicle was quizzed about the whereabouts of the number plates, but gave no coherent reply.

When he was manhandled by the security men who accompanied the governor, the driver eventually showed them where he had hidden them.

The driver was later handed over to the police along with eight other domestic staff found in the lodge.

THISDAY reporters who accompanied Oshiomhole to the lodge discovered that the huge house had been almost emptied with no reasonable item left behind.

It was also discovered that the police personnel guarding the lodge apparently looked the other way while the looting lasted.

The governor, who later led THISDAY team into the lodge said a similar thing happened at the Government House, Benin, “where even spoons were taken away.”

Oshiomhole said since his was a government chosen by the people, he might resort to them “to protect their property if the police failed to do so.”

The new governor said he was not too surprised at the development “because rogues have found their way into government and are even called Your Excellencies.”

Apparently to stem similar looting of other Edo State property, Oshiomhole instructed his aides to reach the Liaison Officer in Lagos to contact the Police Commissioner for adequate protection of all Edo property in the state.

Oshiomhole also warned that he might resort to the use of Edo people to protect their property, “if the Nigerian Police continues to look the other way while the looting of Edo property is carried out.” Efforts by THISDAY to reach Osunbor last night were fruitless.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Benin Edo State, had on Tuesday upheld the March 20 judgement of the Edo State Election Tribunal declaring the Action Congress (AC) candidate and the former President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) the duly elected governor in the April 2007 gubernatorial poll.

He was sworn in before a mammoth crowd on Wednesday in Benin.

Daniel, Obasanjo-Bello clash at Akala’s daughter’s wedding

By Sunday Aborisade

The timely intervention of Oyo State Governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, prevented a major clash between his counterpart in Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Senator Iyabo-Obasanjo Bello, at Ogbomoso, on Saturday.

Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello

Both Daniel and the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo were among the hundreds of dignitaries who graced the state wedding organised by Alao-Akala for his daughter, Subulade Olamide and her husband, Mr. Olayode Alabi.

The governors of Ondo, Ekiti, Osun and Kwara states were also at the ceremony while that of Rivers State was represented by his deputy.

Trouble started at the First Baptist Church, Okelerin, Ogbomoso venue of the wedding when the dignitaries joined Alao-Akala for a thanksgiving dance after the couple’s solemnization.

The governors were already on the dancing floor when Obasanjo-Bello, who sat behind the governors at the church, stood up and was dancing towards the altar to drop her offering but was stopped by an aide of Daniel.

Daniel’s security man insisted that she had no right to pass through the dignitaries and that her style of dancing would disturb his boss.

Attempts by Obasanjo-Bello to break the blockade were vehemently resisted by the security man who pushed her away from the scene.

The Senator, who was obviously enraged by the treatment meted out to her by the security man, slapped the man on the chest. The man, however, moved back to his position.

When she could no longer contain the embarrassing situation, Obasanjo-Bello furiously returned to her seat to watch further proceedings at the wedding service in anger.

The situation drew the attention of everybody including Alao-Akala, who signaled to the officiating ministers to fast track the event to a close.

At a point, the Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, had to plead with Obasanjo-Bello to come and sit near him when he saw the anger visibly written on her face.

The gesture notwithstanding, Obasanjo-Bello wore a long face through out the occasion.

But Alao-Akala, while reacting to the development through his Special Adviser on Public Communication, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, described the incident as a little skirmish.

He said, “It was an importation of local politics that would not distract him from the sublime and profound joy that brought the people together at the blessed occasion”.

There was also another drama at the gate of the church when security details of the host governor and one of the governors almost clashed over the right of passage of their principals, after the church service.

Akala’s security details had allegedly, violently confronted the Chief Security Officer of the governor of one of the neighbouring states who had insisted on his principal leaving the church before the host governor.

A Chief Security Officer of one of the invited governor’s was manhandled by the security officers of the host governor because the CSO had insisted on clearing the way for his boss.

Senior security personnel on the occasion had to step in to ensure that peace prevailed.

Security details at the reception held at Recreation Club, Ogbomoso, were sighted horsewhipping and assaulting guests not withstanding their status for attempting to enter the air-conditioned tent reserved for the VIPs.

Some important dignitaries who could not stomach the insult, had to, out of frustration, leave the scene in anger.

The Grandmaster of Juju Music, Chief Sunday Adeniyi-Adegeye, however, had the shock of his life when the couple rejected his music as they openly expressed their preference for the hip-hop star, 9ice.

Pastor in kidnap mess!*How he used church as detention centre, asked for N50m ransom
Written by SAMUEL OYADONGHA
Sunday, November 16, 2008

Who would have believed that a pastor would have anything to do with kidnapping? This is a poser many would dismiss with the wave of the hand but to hear that the sanctuary of the living God could be turned into an abduction camp by commercial hostage takers with the connivance of a pastor is certainly a cause for concern. And that exactly is the puzzle the police are working round the clock to unravel in the predominantly riverine Bayelsa State.

Yenagoa—PERHAPS, if the pastor at the centre of the storm, identified as Archibong Bassey, was not involved in the drama that shocked all those present at the Bayelsa State Police Command, last Monday, the heinous crime would have been concealed as their victim could have been murdered without any trace of the kidnappers. But God, in a miraculous way, used the same pastor, who is now cooling his heels in police custody alongside other suspects, to thwart the evil machination of the initiator of the kidnapped plot identified as Sola Saka, a close friend of the family of their victim.

For the Roberts family of Tungbo community in Sagbama Local Government Area of the state, they would forever be grateful to God for sparing the life of their child who was held in captivity for eight days. Some other victims in similar circumstances were not that lucky to return home to their parents and peers. Trouble started for the pastor, an indigene of Cross Rivers State, and his accomplice identified as Fatai Okunola and Sola Saka.

Little Collins, aged 6, a primary four pupil of Ayakpo Nursery and Primary School and son of Mr. Ebidamowei Roberts, an accountant with Bayelsa State Treasury Office of the Ministry of Finance, was abducted by Sola after luring the child away from his mother’s abode at Amarata in Yenagoa metropolis on October 16, 2008. Interestingly, the mastermind of the kidnap plot had earlier approached their victim’s father, known for his generosity, to solicit his assistance so as to enable him travel to his home state in the western part of the country to attend to a pressing family problem.

The senior Roberts was said to have given him (Sola) some money not knowing that he had concluded plan to invest the money in a kidnap plot that would turn out to a traumatic moment for his family. Armed with the money, the architect of the kidnap plot went to Collins mother’s home and took him away under the guise that he was taking him to his father’s place at Kpansia off Nikton Road in the capital city. But, unknown to the child, Sola had arranged a taxi to take them to Mbiama en-route Port Harcourt.

In order not to arouse the suspicion of other passengers, the kidnapper decided to change the taxis he boarded by stopping at Mbiama and taking another vehicle to somewhere in the outskirts of Choba in Rivers State where the first taxi he arranged was waiting to pick him and his victim (little Collins) to their final destination which turned out to be the pastor’s church in Port Harcourt.

Having succeeded in the first phase of the plot, the kidnappers now settled down to call their victim’s father’s mobile phone to tell him his son was in their custody and that he should pay N50million ransom for his release. Perhaps their conjecture might have been that raising the N50 million ransom wouldn’t be a problem for the grief-stricken father since he works in the state Treasury Office where most of the staff are known for their wealth. Before putting the call through, the kidnappers had worked out the sharing formula convinced that their victim’s father will play along with them.

Unrealistic demand

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the pastor, in whose custody the child was kept, was promised N5 million. But what the kidnappers failed to figure out was that the plot was doomed from the onset as their victim’s father does not have the resources to meet their demand. Upon discovery that the N50 million ransom was not realistic, the kidnappers were forced to bring down their demand to N15 million.

The plot, it was, however, learnt failed when the initiator of the plot came back to tell the pastor that his N5million share of the booty earlier promised was no longer possible and that he would be coming to pick up their captive from his (pastor) custody following the refusal of the boy’s father to play along. Worried that something terrible could be done to their victim, the pastor took the boy to the police in Port Harcourt whose officers later brought him to Yenagoa.

On getting to Yenagoa, the boy, who is familiar with the area, took the security operatives to his father’s house at Kpansia and fingered the now arrested Sola as the person who took him away from his mother’s home at Amarata. Narrating his experience to Sunday Vanguard, the relieved father of the abducted child said the kidnap of his child was a traumatic experience and that his return was a miracle. According to Roberts, those arrested by the police were identified by the boy as those involved in his abduction. He said that the issue of how to share the ransom if it was paid led to a dispute among the kidnappers and a change of heart by the pastor who reportedly dropped off the victim at a nearby police station.

Roberts added that his son informed the police that the arrested Sola, a close friend of the family, allegedly took him around 9.00 am on October 16. He (Sola) was reported to have hired a private car and moved the boy to Port Harcourt where he arranged with the pastor simply identified as David to hide their victim in his church. “On realizing that the game was up following my refusal to play along with them, the pastor took my son to the police station in Port Harcourt from where he was brought back home. The boy on returning home mentioned Sola as the person who took him away,” he said, prompting the police to launch a manhunt leading to his arrest and that Sola confessional statement led to the arrest of the pastor and his other cohort.

Parading the suspected kidnappers at Bayelsa State Police Command and three others involved in the kidnap of septuagenarian Madam Akara-ere Benamiesia, mother of the former coordinator of the state government owned security outfit, ‘Bayelsa Volunteers’, the deputy commissioner of police, Mr. Abayomi Akerelemale, said the suspects would be treated as armed robbers in line with the new directive from the inspector-general of police.

While calling all prospective kidnappers to turn a new leaf, he said, “We have a directive from the inspector-general of police that kidnappers should be treated as armed robbers. There are other legitimate means to make money instead of embarking on such criminal and dangerous act as kidnapping.” He, however, urged relations of kidnapped victims to stop paying ransom with a view to discouraging the heinous crime, adding that the suspects will be arraigned before a court of law.
