Decent roads et al do not equate to better standard of living. Russia has mighty roads and infrastructures but their citizens begged for bread all through the 90's and early 00's before oil money slowly trickled down and eased their pain a bit. Russia is still struggling today. Iran is one of the poorest states in the middle east and i do not think they feed better than Nigerians unless you have lived there.

Technology breakthrough, yes, but not reckless spending with 'technology breakthrough' as an excuse.

Lol. I can't say it is a certainty but I am yet to see what the first Satelite achieved. I remeber when it was launched, people had the impression that cost of telecommunication and the internet would fall but that hasnt happened, so I don't really know what they were doing with it

Appointment: Soludo deserves presidential handshake

Former Minister of Information, Chief Alex Akinyele, has called on President Umaru Yar’Adua to accord the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Charles Soludo, a warmth presidential handshake over his appointment into the team of experts to form a high level task force to fix the global financial crisis.



Akinyele, who spoke to Daily Sun in Lagos hailed Soludo’s appointment into the high level task force, describing it as a testimony of the global recognition of his unparallel achievements in reforming the nation’s financial sector.

UN General Assembly President, Mignel Descoto, who announced the appointment had said the Commission of Experts on Reforms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank while noting that the task force will suggest steps that member states can take to secure a more stable global economic order.

While expressing gladness at the appointment, Akinyele said Soludo, more amply deserves the honour of a presidential handshake in view of the special honour and recognition his appointment has brought to the country.

“Before the UN would have nominated him for such important global assignment, they must have been convinced of his capability as an excellent professional, diligent and of sound integrity. Overtime, he has demonstrated his ability as an expert who knows the nitty-gritty of the finance world.

“Personally, I am very proud of the appointment and should be celebrated so that those who think that it is only 419 we do here can see that in Nigeria we have a man who has been universally acknowledged as an honest man, astitute banker and of impeccable integrity.

“Our Bible says: ‘Tell thou a man diligent in his work, he shall stand before kings and not before mean men. Here is our own son standing proudly before the entire world for all of us to share in the pride that goes with this appointment.

“I, as a humble citizen, want to request President Umaru Yar’Adua to give Soludo a warmth presidential handshake. If those who win matches and laurels in other human endeavours are given such honour, how much more Soludo who brought a great honour through excellent performance as an accomplished professional that is universally recognised,” he said.

The Ondo high chief expressed confident that the world would have to learn and benefit from Soludo’s deep knowledge of the nitty-gritty of the finance world as reflected in his ground breaking reforms of the nation’s financial sector.

“I told you few months ago that Soludo has solidified the banking system in the country. Now we can put our money in any bank in the country and go home to sleep with our two eyes closed. The international world must have appreciated his expertise before giving him the appointment,” he said.

MURDER At last, police arrest run-away suspect

The fleeing 15-year-old girl in Lagos, who allegedly stabbed 18 years old male student, Tomola Akanye, to death, has been arrested by police detectives from Apapa Division.

Bose Omagbemi, was arrested in her relative’s house at Oworonsoki area of the state, where she went into hiding.

The suspect was said to have narrated to the police how she killed Akanye in Itun Agan, a village in Tincan Island area of Lagos. She claimed that problem started when the deceased bought N10 orange from her but refused to pay.

The suspect, a native of Ondo state, also disclosed how she made passionate appeal to the boy to pay for the orange without success, before she was provoked to the point of holding his shirt. She explained that it was when the boy wanted to hit her with his head that she stabbed him in the chest with the knife she was holding in her hand.

She said when she noticed he was dying, she fled from the village. “I didn’t know he would die. He bought N10 orange from me and refused to pay. I held his cloth and when he wanted to hit me with his head, I stabbed him with the knife. I will never fight again in my life,” Omagbemi said, sobbing.

Police had earlier arrested her mother, leading to the arrest of her fleeing daughter.

The deceased’s father, Arife Akanye, a police Sergeant was said to have died two years ago while his wife died four years ago.

Meanwhile, the body of the victim has been deposited in a public morgue for autopsy, while the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, for further investigations.

What did we mismanage? The first satellite that crashed was nobody's fault. It happens to G8 nations too. Technology advancement costs money and is expensive. Did US quit the space technology when one of their rockets( Apollo or Challenger) crashed and killed five astronauts in the 80's?. I think it's the Challenger.

Most spare parts people are Nnewi of Anambra state
Most textile traders including okirika are abiriba,Alayi,Item area of Abia state
Most electronics dealers are Nkanu area of Enugu state and Mbano area
Most cosmetics and shoe traders are anambra area
Most Chemist owners are Orlu and Nkwerre side of Imo state.

Of course not limited to these areas but quite a nyumber are from there.

Mass Return is basically "reunion" for all the sons and daughters of the same town as people will return home that particular year for it. It is something one shouldnt miss. I will be attending one of my friend's town own. My town did theirs last year and it was MASSIVEEEE and if u know the nature and character of the town I come from, you would know it would be 100 times pass what other towns would do, lol

Who is to blame here? The men or the women?. I think the women are to blame because if they did not give men the allowance to do this shit, they will stop trying it. Osisi have said it all ooooooo, The joy of xmas in any town in igbo land is something one has to witness. It is the time of the year where the whole family members both nuclear and extended are under one roof. Chineke, it is fun that I wish will never end. In fact, each town have started doing what they call " MASS RETURN", Traditional Marriages, Wedding, Parties are just lined up, in fact, I have no more room to fit in occasions for me to attend this xmas.

My dad has a huge mansion but with fewer rooms but my brothers are still building theirs

His dad has a white two storey building in the village and he has only 3 sons and 2 daughters that are married. there is no difference between igbos christmas celebration and family's reunion by Americans mostly during thanksgiving. The only difference is that family reunions are held in different cities of their choice.

Of course it wouldn't be every igbo that will participate because of financial or religious reasons. I know that Jehovahs witnesses don't celebrate christmas.

They don't need one because his father already built a very big mansion that has over 20 bedrooms, a ballroom etc in the village with constant electricity. My sister said she'll come back with a trailer full of pictures because it's her first time.

Even an Igbo man in Aba who's from Okija makes sure he travels to Okija for Christmas.
It's now called Christmas but the December festivities in Igboland started before Christianity came to Igboland.
There's what we call Mmemme translated to mean celebration or merriment and it differs from place to place but it falls around Christmas time and still celebrated all over Igboland.

Most of our weddings are also around Christmas time
Chieftaincy coronations are at Christmas time
An Igbo man always sees himself as a sojourner wherever he is outside of his homeland.
He could be born and bred in Lagos, or kaduna but he'll forever see himself as an Igbo land and never regards his land of sojoun as his home.
Through out my childhood,I grew up in several cities in Nigeria but we always went to the village every Decemer 20th and stayed there till January 3rd or so.
It was a time of great merriment,cousins,Inlaws and friends came home from all over the globe and celebrated Christmas in the village.
I remember the traditional dances,the masqurerades,the crusades with films in open fields.

Our men build their biggest homes in the village and Christmas time is a good time to relax from all the toiling in the city

I was wondering because my sister and her family are travelling to igboland this december and if you see how her husband prepared for the thing financially and otherwise, you wonder whether there is something else happening apart from christmas. He even bought cognac, wines etc from America and shipped them home since june. My sister shopped a lot of other stuffs they packed in the SUV he also shipped last september for the same christmas. So igbos have that culture way before the christian era?
