Investigation: N273bn disappears from DPR’s accounts

Investigation: N273bn disappears from DPR’s accounts

We are not signatory to accounts – DPR

A total sum of US$759, 387,755.10 (N273,379, 591,837.00) was illegally withdrawn from the Signature Bonus Accounts belonging to the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), a report of an audit of revenue accounts of the organisation has revealed. Consequently, the director of the DPR has been queried to provide explanation on how withdrawals from the Signature Bonus Account were recognised in the books of the organisation. But the DPR said it was not a signatory to government accounts; hence it had forwarded the audit query to the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, which manages funds on behalf of the Federal Government.

The DPR is responsible for collecting revenue on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria on oil royalty, gas royalty, gas flared penalty, concession rentals, as well as miscellaneous oil revenue. But while revenues accruing from these sources, which run into billions, are expected to be swept to the Federation Account, the audit report indicated that details of the utilisation of the N273billion withdrawn from the Signature Bonus Account of the DPR have not been made known.

Checks by Daily Trust on Sunday indicated that the audit was carried out by a team of auditors on periodic checks from the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation (OAGF) for the period of January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017.

The single paragraph report with reference number: OAuGF/GEN.CORR./AuGF, dated February 8, 2019, indicated that the sum of US$469,387,755.10 (N168, 979,591, 836) was withdrawn from the Signature Bonus Account domiciled with JP Morgan Chase Bank between April 10 and April 30, 2015 to an account titled “CBN Autonomous FEM Account, Garki, Abuja, Nigeria.”

The second withdrawal, according to the report titled: “Periodic Checks Report on DPR for the period of January 2014 to December 2017,” a copy of which Daily Trust on Sunday exclusively obtained, amounted to US$290,000.000.00 (N104, 400,000,000.00), was made from the Signature Bonus Account domiciled with JP Morgan Chase Bank in three tranches.

The first tranche of US$ 100,000,000.00 (N36 billion) was made on July 7, 2014 while the second trench amounting to US$40,000,000.00 (N14, 400, 000,000.00) was made on February 19, 2015.

The third tranche, according to the report, amounting to US$150,000,000.00 (N54 billion), was made on May 8, 2015 via the Standard Chartered Bank to First Bank, Nigeria in favour of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). But rather than being swept to the Federation Account, the transactions bore the description, “Being funds released to PTDF for execution of critical project.” “No explanation was provided on these withdrawals as the DPR claimed that it had no control over withdrawal from the Signature Bonus Account; though it accounts for such withdrawals in its cash book,” the report said.

The Periodic Checks Report signed by the Auditor General for the Federation (AGF), A.M. Ayine, requested the director of the DPR to provide explanation on how withdrawals from the Signature Bonus Account are recognised in the books of the organisation. Similarly, the Accountant General of the Federation, the Minister of Finance and the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) were requested to produce the authority to transfer funds from the Signature Bonus Account to any other account rather than to the Federation Account. “Furthermore, the Accountant General of the Federation and the Minister of Finance should provide details of the utilisation of the US$759, 387,755.10 withdrawn from the Signature Bonus Account,” the report stated. Query not meant for us – DPR.

The DPR has absolved itself from the audit query, saying it was not meant for them but for the office of the Accountant General of the Federation. The manager, Public Affairs of the organisation, Paul Osu, admitted that they got the query from the office of the Auditor General for the Federation “but it was not meant for us, so we forwarded it to the office of the Accountant General.” “We are a revenue collection agency; our jobs are revenues that are statutorily within our purview to collect.

We collect and channel to government account, so it is not a DPR account; it is government account.

How the funds are disbursed, who signs for it is not within our purview. Those funds are managed on behalf of the government by the office of the Accountant General of the Federation. So when we got that query we spoke to the Auditor General’s office and he advised us to forward it to the Accountant General’s office; they are in a best position to speak on the matter. “We are not signatories to those accounts; all government accounts are managed by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation,” Osu said. Attempt to speak with the Auditor-General for further clarification on the matter did not yield positive results by press time as several calls put across to his mobile phone line were unanswered.

Wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, on Friday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to order the release of the $5.7m and N2.4bn seized from her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Her lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), urged Justice Mojisola Olatoregun to dismiss the application by the EFCC, praying that the money be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

Adedipe argued that it was wrong for the EFCC to tag the money as proceeds of crime, when Patience had committed no crime and when nobody complained that their money was missing.

The SAN said the funds were cash gifts which Patience received when her husband was in office.

Adedipe said such gifts were normal, pointing out that even the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, was seeking to build a university.

The lawyer contended that Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud, which EFCC relied upon to seize Patience’s funds, was only applicable to fraudsters.

“It is not the law that if the EFCC finds money in an account and it doesn’t like the owner’s face, it comes to court and says ‘forfeit it’.

“The government is at liberty to apply for forfeiture but the offence must be stated.

“The first respondent is a wife to a former deputy governor, governor, Vice President, and President.

“Even the current occupier of the office of the First Lady wants to build a university.

“In this country, First Ladies enjoy a lot of goodwill. She (Patience) stated that governors gave her money. Nobody wrote that she stole their money,” the SAN said.

Adedipe said there was no justification for the money to be forfeited to the Federal Government as the EFCC had not proved that Patience stole money from the government or any individual.

It’s New Dawn As Ore Opens Industrial Park

THE SOUTH WEST
By HAKEEM GBADAMOSI

On May 21, 2019

The Ondo State government is gradually transforming Ore town, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, to an industrial hub in order to ensure a solid economic base for the state and to create more employment opportunities, HAKEEM GBADAMOSI writes, after a visit to the industrial park.

Prior to the coming on board of the present adminstration of Rotimi Akeredolu in Ondo State, to many, the state is regarded as one of the agrarian states of the federation, which is also populated by civil servants with not enough functional industries across the state.

Most industries put in place by the first civilian governor, the late Adekunle Ajasin, between 1979 and 1984, had gone moribund with no hope of revival for many of them. Some of such industries included the Oluwa Glass in Okitipupa, Ifon Ceramics in Ifon, while the only surviving Okitipupa Oil Palm Company is still struggling for survival.

But as part of his electoral promises during the 2016 governorship campaign, Akeredolu is staying true to his words to industrialise the Sunshine State in line with the best in the country and also to create more employment opportunities.

Aside creating jobs, the establishment of these industries is also to ensure a solid economic base for the state and reduce over-dependence on the monthly allocations from the Federal Government to develop the state.

Court orders: INEC withdraws 25 Certificates-of-Return

In mid-2017, the governor embarked on an investment tour to China, where he sealed an agreement and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Linyi Municipal Government of Shandong Province, which gave birth to five of what is now known in the state as the Ore Industrial Park, in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state. This has contributed to repositioning the state and has gradually put the state on the level of becoming one of the leading industrialised states in the country.

Heap of cassava tubers ready for the production of ethanol.
At least five different companies have commenced operations at the Ore Industrial Park, which include a paper mill, ethanol plant, medium density fibre board, high density fibre board, plywood and textile company.

The aftermath of the tour to Linyi Municipal Government of Shandong Province by Akeredolu and his team led to the kick-off of 10,000 hectares of the afforestation project, where Gmelina arborea was planted on 1,500 of the 10,000 hectares, which was jointly owned by the Ondo State government and Wewood.

During a visit by the Nigerian Tribune to the new industrial park, it was noticed that all facilities had been put in place for the paper mill factory. According to the Business Development Manager of Weewood Limited, Mr Sun Peng, while conducting reporters round the paper mill company, the paper mill is structured to create more jobs for residents.

He stated that Weewood had prepared for the take-off of the paper mill long before the arrival of machines for the mill in Nigeria, by making the primary raw materials available in large form, saying “this was done through the planting of trees that will form the primary raw materials for the mill.”

He also said: “The trees keep growing and maturing on a daily basis because this is a fertile land. The trees are yielding expected results and we have enough materials on ground even before the take-off of the paper mill company.

“We did not rely solely on the plantation we have here for the production of paper, we also source for materials from local suppliers who specialise in the production of this special wood which is used for newsprint.”

Peng, however, said production is being delayed by power supply to the factory. He disclosed that the project is about 95 per cent completion, and attributed the establishment of the factory and other companies to the proximity to power supply.

Peng said the factory is now about 80 per cent complete, adding that on completion, the paper mill is expected to employ more than 3,000 direct staff, while many more are expected to benefit from jobs created down the value chain.

Speaking on the development, another worker who hails from Ore, Saheed Abifarin, said: “The governor deserves commendation for this initiative. This is a win-win situation for Ondo State and its people. The company has been employing our people and will continue to employ our people on the farm to plant the trees; it will go on to employ many of our unemployed youth in the factory and other auxiliary jobs that would be created. It will improve quality of life here.”

At the Ethanol plant, work had commenced at the site and all facilities have been put in place.

It was observed that farmers, businessmen, and women are already reaping from the indirect jobs created by the ethanol plant. The warehouse is filled with thousands of bags of dried cassava, waiting to be loaded into the machines, while more than 20 trailer-loads of cassava are waiting to off-load several other bags of cassava brought by local suppliers.

Peng explained that in producing ethanol, the company would use cassava for its production. He disclosed that a special specie of cassava is being planted in-between the Gmelina trees, which will be used to feed the ethanol plant.

Noting that test-run of the machines would begin before the end of April, he added: “Already, about 1,000 people have been employed for the ethanol factory for direct jobs. The plant is also expected to provide jobs for more than 10,000 people, particularly cassava farmers and traders.”

He said local and private farmers had been involved and stressed that local farmers, who have been supplying the cassava, are excited about a ready and lucrative market for their goods.

One of the farmers, Shehu Oladapo, who trades in cassava in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, commended the efforts of Akeredolu for the initiative and said: “I thank Governor Akeredolu for this initiative and it will go a long way to realise our dreams. We come on a daily basis to supply cassava and we are happy with this, as we are paid promptly and this project has turned cassava to gold in this part of the state.”

At the ethanol project, it was observed that farmers, businessmen, and women were already reaping from the jobs created by establishment of the ethanol plant.

The Weewood Plywood/HDF factory is already bubbling with activities The company’s products, high-quality fiberboard plywood, are already in high demand in markets across the state.

Ore
Inside view of the paper mill factory.
One of the workers, who spoke with Nigerian Tribune, said: “The workers are working round the clock to meet the demand of the local market, while there is international demand for the product.” He, however, said that the factory would surely be positioned to earn foreign currency through the export of the product, which has been in high demand.

The WinWin Textile factory also located inside the park commenced production of textile thread a few months ago. This building is workplace for no fewer than 500 workers and this has also helped to solve the problem of unemployment, especially for residents, who for the first time have found a worthwhile venture outside the civil service.

According to one of the managers of WinWin Textile, Ahmed Adeyinka, the textile is presently producing polyester sewing thread. He also disclosed that the textile factory would move to the next stage of producing textile materials like lace, Ankara, among others, very soon.

“Presently, we have 500 people working for us. We now produce all kinds of sewing polyester thread for the local market. In a couple of months from now, the factory will begin to run at full capacity with the production of textile materials of all kinds,” he said.

One of the managers of the wood factory, Oyeye Destiny, explained that the industrial park was located in Ore because of the centrality of the town as the town is regarded as the gateway between the South-West, South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. For travellers going to the South-South/ South-East from Lagos, Ore is the stop-over point where people get refreshed before proceeding on their long journeys.

Being a gateway town, many industrialists have moved to establish one company or the other in the town, as there is the belief that getting raw materials from the hinterland and the finished product to markets in Lagos would be easier.

Aside this, the Federal Government presence in the town through the Independent Power Plant (IPP) established a few years ago made Ore town the destination of many foreign and local investors because of the proximity to the power plant, the absence of which hinders the growth of many industries across the country.

This is one of the reasons the immediate past government set up an IPP in order to distribute electricity to companies which may want to establish in the corridor. All factories are set to commence operations immediately the IPP completes the process to transit power to the industrial park.

More than 3,000 people have been employed by the companies and factories, but the plant is also expected to provide jobs for more than 10,000 people.

However, the Ore Industrial Park which is fashioned after Linyi Municipal Government of Shandong Province in China, will not only turn the state to a model for one-stop industrial parks in the country, it will also help to take unemployed youth off the streets.

And if the experience of the Linyi’s economy, which is based around its wholesale markets and an annual trade volume of 40 billion RMB (US$5 billion), is anything to go by, the administration of Akeredolu may have just set a standard by which governance would be measured in the country.

IF the contents of classified records were anything to go by, the perception that President Muhammadu Buhari’s political appointments have unduly favoured the Northern part of the country is not supported by facts. ADVERTISING Buhari Insecurity remains a big challenge- Buhari(Opens in a new browser tab) The classified documents, which contain all high profile political appointment made since Buhari came to power in 2015 show that the appointments have been largely balanced with the president’s North-West zone among the zones holding the shorter end of the stick.

The documents entitled: “Compilation of political appointees, heads of parastatals and agencies” and “Portfolios of ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants to the President”, were last updated in December 2018. The documents, the first 43 pages and the second 17 pages, showed, for example, that between 2015 and 2018, while the North-Central topped the number of appointments in Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, with 102 appointees, the South-West came second with 101 appointees giving the two zones 35 per cent or 203 of the 567 appointments made.

The South-South came third with 99 appointments, ahead of the North-West, which came fourth with 94. The North-East followed with 93, and the South-East is least with 78. In the North-Central, Kogi topped with 22 appointees, followed by Kwara with 21, and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja got the least with two appointees. Ogun tops in S-West Ogun State in the South-West, topped countrywide with 31 appointees, more than the MDA appointments for three North-West states – Kebbi 13; Zamfara seven; and Sokoto six – combined. Buhari’s Katsina topped the North-West appointments with 24, while Kaduna and Kano each got 16; and Jigawa, 12. Although, the South-East was bottom, Imo State had the third highest number of MDA appointments countrywide with 29 appointees, while Anambra had 20; and Abia 14. Enugu and Ebonyi had eight and seven respectively. According to the documents, however, the percentage in executive management appointments in MDAs, show 51 per cent in favour of the 19 Northern states, and 49 per cent in favour of the 17 Southern states. And 124 high profile political appointments comprising special advisers, senior special assistants, and special assistants to the president were made out of which 59 were from the Northern region and 65 were from the South. This number excludes 36 ministers who are statutorily appointed one each from a state. Public opinion in the last four years has been hugely dominated by a perception of serious bias in appointments in favour of the North by the Buhari Administration. The perception was further enhanced with the North producing the heads of the three arms of government, and heads virtually all the security agencies. Sentiments about regional bias in political appointments are sometimes laden with religious undertones, not reflected in the classified documents.

The consequential nature of the postings is, also sometimes, a hotly contested issue, with some arguing that a section of the country gets more “juicy” appointments than others. But the appointments also show an interesting pattern. Of the 567 executive appointments in MDAs, 220 or 39 per cent were from states where Buhari lost to Jonathan, far better than public perception suggests. The South-South, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP stronghold, is number three on the MDAs appointments table with 99 appointees, beaten only by the North-Central and the South-West. For example, in Delta where Buhari lost to Jonathan by 1,162,495 votes and in Rivers State where he lost by 1,417,837 (two states where he suffered his worst losses), the MDA appointments were 23 in Delta and 13 in Rivers respectively, compared with the three core Northern states of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, with 26 appointments combined, but, total marginal winning votes of 1,454,002 over that of Jonathan. The appointments marginally tilt the balance in favour of the South, with 52.4 per cent against the North’s 47.6 per cent. The relatively higher number of such high-profile appointments from the North made between 2015 and 2016 (Buhari’s early days in office), tended to give the incorrect impression that the North retained an unfair share of the appointments to date. Kebbi, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Plateau, FCT, Bayelsa, Ebonyi have zero appointments of presidential aides and thus will not even appear in the chart. Adamawa and Kano top the list with 11 each; while Oyo follows with 10; Ogun nine; Lagos and Kaduna, eight each; and Katsina, seven. Ekiti and Osun tie at six; Delta and Ondo each have five; while Akwa Ibom and Edo each have four. A reliable source who refused to be named said:

“The President has been severely criticised for so-called lopsided appointments in favour of the North, but the facts hardly support this view.” ‘’Unfortunately, since the public has been misled to believe that the North has this government by the jugular, even those from parts of the North that have been short-changed are forced to suffer in silence. Some states like Zamfara and Kebbi that contributed almost four per cent each to his electoral success in 2015 have been deprived, but they can’t complain.” Southern leaders disagree However, some southern leaders have pooh poohed the records just as a group under the aegis of retired Civil Servants and Professionals from the Southern States, yesterday, cried over what it described as high level of marginalization and imbalance in appointments across federal parastatals and agencies in the country.

The retired civil servants urged President Buhari to do more on the Federal Character to ensure that a particular region was not over loaded to the detriment of others, especially the Southern part of the country. Addressing Journalists in Abuja after the meeting, the group urged President Buhari to use his second term to seriously address all outstanding issues affecting national unity. In a joint Communique by Deacon Michael Adewale, Mr. John Ukaegbu and octogenarian Mrs. Mercy Tamuno, the group pleaded with President Buhari to listen more to the fears and concerns being expressed by people from various parts of the country, especially, southern states, just as they said that he can easily rank as one of the greatest leaders in Nigerian history. According to them, the government should appreciate the fact that not every group of concerned Nigerians is out to achieve political ends. They particularly noted that the Federal Character Commission which is undertaking the task is only being headed by a southerner for the first time since 1996, adding that the person has only remained in acting capacity since last year.

They said: “President Buhari’s second term can really be a ‘Next Level’ for the entire federation and the confirmation of the first southerner in the capacity of Chairman at Federal Character Commission will be a productive symbolism of the administration’s good intentions. Between December 1995 to March, 2001, Alhaji Adamu Fika from Yobe state was the commission’s chairman and he was succeeded by Alhaji Bello Kofa Bai from Katsina State, who was in the position from July, 2002 to January, 2007 when he handed over to Professor Abdulraheem from Kwara State, who stayed from April 2008 till October 2014 when he handed over to Alhaji Ari Gwaska from Nassarawa State, who was acting chairman from 2011 to 2012. “Alhaji Lawan Funtua from Katsina State was the commission’s acting chairman from 2013 to 2014 when Alhaji Bello Alkali from Kebbi State took over and handed over to Dr. Shettima Bukar Abba from Borno State who was there from January 2014 to July, 2018. “The first southerner, Abayomi Sheda from Ondo State got appointed in acting capacity in September 2018 and it would be a great change if he is confirmed to further give everyone from all parts of Nigeria a genuine sense of belonging.” South-East wants Buhari to be serious about true federalism —ABC Nwosu Speaking on the issue, Professor Alphonsus Nwosu, former Minister of Health and political adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said the South-East is less concerned about who gets what but deeply concerned about true federalism. “To compare the Jonathan administration to that of Buhari in term of fairness to the South-East is absolutely unimaginable.

The Buhari administration knows it has been as cruel as he can be to the South-East by applying 97 per cent and five percent in his apointments. The South-East simply wants Buhari to be serious about true federalism and restructuring of Nigeria which our founding fathers agreed upon.” Buhari’s appointments lopsided— Ozekhome Constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Barrister Mike Ozekhome, SAN, said so far President Buhari’s appointments did not reflect the federal character principle and have been biased against the southern part of the country. He said: “I don’t agree at all. In what way has Buhari demonstrated fairness in the appointments he has so far made since he became President in 2015? Rather, his 97 per cent to 5 per cent quota of votes vis-a-vis allocation of important positions in government philosophy has been at work. The entire security apparatchik and architecture of Nigeria is over 95 per cent for Northern Muslims. Is that fair, just and egalitarian?” You can’t say appointments in security structure are fair, balanced — Ikokwu In like manner, Second Republic politician, lawyer and an elder of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, appointments in the security structure of the country are not fair and balanced so also recent appointments in the parastatals, Customs Service, Prisons, and the NNPC. His words: ‘’We are looking at facts not fiction. We are talking about appointments in the civil service, parastatals, and upper echelon of the economy. The northerners who have been appointed will rule this country until they are 65 to 70 years. That is in the next 30 years, they will be in charge of Nigeria’s governance structure until they retire. The only thing that can solve this quagmire of random selection is for the country to embrace true federalism and restructure the governance system, in which case, any state that likes it can appoint only its citizens to man its parastatals and appoint others on contract. That was how it was in the past. That was the system that the military bastardised in the last 50 years. If the governance structure is well distributed, there will be no hues and cries. Is the security structure of the country fait and balanced. Everybody knows it is not.’’

Nigeria currently has 43 Federal Universities. Not counting Polytechnics, Hospitals and other Federal Institutions. Plan is to use the same model on all of them eventually.
FG started with major markets like Ariara etc and it is spreading to other sectors.
Can you imagine if we have started this journey that we embark on now since 1999. Imagine where we will be now? Kudos to the Buhari administration.

Housing: 32yrs after, FG flags off federal sites at Umunya, Awkuzu

MAY 20, 2019

Ukpono Ukpong, Abuja At last, luck has finally shone on the people of Umunya and Awkuzu communities in Uyi local government of Anambra state as the Federal Government effectively revived the stalled provision of infrastructural facilities at the Federal Sites and Services Scheme over the weekend.

In furtherance to demonstrate the resolve of the FG to address housing issues bedeviling the nation, the Umunya/Awkuzu communities witnessed and celebrated the revival of the project in fanfare and pageantry. Recall, the Minister of Power Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola had earlier approved the deployment of public private partnership agreement with the Association of Allottees of Federal Sites and Services Scheme, Umunya/Awkuzu, to provide basic infrastructure on the site.

The Minister represented by the Director Highways, Construction and Rehabilitation, Engr. Yemi Oguntominiyi at the flag off ceremony over the weekend, recalled that the project which was in the pipeline since 1987, had acquired a large piece of land measuring about 236 hectares at Awkuzu, Section A, for the purpose of developing the National Housing Programme. 2,800 plots were allocated to members of the public since 1993 but due to paucity of funds the site had remained undeveloped. Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Board of Trustee, Association of Allottees, Col. Michael Onuorah rtd. applauded the efforts made by the Hon. Minister to ensure the project came alive and proudly declared that the allottees would finally actualize their housing dreams. Col. Onuorah rtd. stated that the Association is poised to deliver a modern and befitting estate that would be the envy of all. He therefore sought for the cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure a hitch free process during the site construction. Also present at the flag off ceremony was His Royal Highness, Sir Kris Onyekweluje (Eze Nya 1) Umunya with his cabinet members.

In his address, Sir Kris Onyekweluje commended the efforts put in by the Hon. Minister and the Association of the Allottees and further brought to fore issues of concerns he would love the government to address, in order to stem youth restiveness in the communities. He pledged his undying support and that of his subjects to the laudable initiative.

Benefits derivable from the project includes infrastructural development such as houses, roads services and electricity, water supply, drainage, hospitals and schools; J ob creation for mechanics, technicians, builders, masons, artisans and building materials vendors; Services to new estates and new businesses will develop in the area; Increase in the national housing stock translating to economic boom in the area and this will help to stem rural/urban migration.

2023: Ohanaeze’s secretary backs Amaechi, says Igbo can’t be President

Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harcourt

The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Uche Okwukwu, has said that the people of the South-East played themselves out of the 2023 Presidency by failing to vote for the All Progressives Congress in the 2019 general elections.

Okwukwu said he was supporting the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who stated that the Igbo had by act of omission or commission made it impossible for them to win the Presidency in the next four years.

He made his position known in a statement made available to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Monday.

He described Amaechi’s assertion as true, adding that the Igbo denied President Muhammadu Buhari a presence in the South-East by failing to vote for him (Buhari).

He said, “Amaechi’s statement is correct because they betrayed him; they betrayed Ndigbo. You must have followed the event leading to the confusion, where a socio-cultural organisation adopted President Muhammadu Buhari without affording Amaechi the opportunity of participating in the meeting of Ndigbo.

“Amaechi is an Igbo man. He has openly said he is Igbo. So, why would you deny him the opportunity of participating in the meeting that purportedly endorsed Buhari and then you denied him the opportunity of presenting his own bulk to the Igbo.

“Of course, whether we agree or not, politics is reality. By not voting for Buhari and denying him any presence in Igboland, we have to a large extent, by omission or commission, shut ourselves out of the presidency in 2023.

“Even if you go to the convention of the APC, Igbo cannot win the primary in the APC. This is because they don’t have any senator, no governor, nobody in the APC. So, how will they win the primary? It is a sad thing, but it is the reality on the ground.

“Amaechi’s predictable assertion to the effect that Ndigbo had by an act of omission or commission shut themselves out of the presidency come 2023 is nothing but the truth.”
