Politics / #endsars Panel Was Illegal – Keyamo by dejirule: 2:22am On Nov 29, 2021
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, has faulted the judicial panel of inquiry set up to investigate cases of police brutality and SARS-related abuses across the country.

Responding to a question about the position of the government specifically regarding a leaked report by the Lagos judicial panel, the human rights lawyer described the panel as illegal.

“I will not answer this question as a sitting minister,” he said on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics. “I will answer this question as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and so, I am entitled to my own opinion. This is not the Federal Government’s position.

“For me, that panel was an illegal panel”.

His comments come days after the leaked report by the panel indicted the operatives of the Nigerian Army and Police, saying they indeed shot at unarmed protesters.

Business / CBN Resumes Dollar Sales For SMEs, School Fees by dejirule: 10:20am On Apr 30, 2020
In view of the gradual easing of the COVID-19 lockdown both globally and in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has resumed provision of foreign exchange to all commercial banks for onward sales to parents wishing to pay schools fees and SMEs wishing to make essential imports needed to revamp economic activities across the country. In particular, the CBN is resuming the provision of over US$100 million per week for both categories.

The CBN has also made complete arrangements to resume foreign exchange sales to the BDC segment of the market for business travels, personal travels, and other designated retail uses, as soon as international flights resume.

With these actions, the CBN wishes to reiterate that it is adequately meeting the needs of all legitimate users, and our continued capacity to do so should not be in doubt. There is therefore no need for panic by any end-user that could necessitate recourse to illegitimate sources and spike in foreign exchange rates. Given this, the Bank has ramped up its surveillance of the foreign exchange markets for speculators, smugglers and other illegal users, and will take decisive actions against anyone/institutions involved in such nefarious activities.

Celebrities / Court Grants Sober Looking Naira Marley Bail by dejirule: 1:51pm On May 30, 2019

The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi has granted Nigerian Musician Azeez Fashola bail.

At the resumed bail application, his lead defense counsel Olalekan Ojo for the singer apologized for his absence at the initial arraignment on May 20 due to heavy down poor.

Ojo urged the court to accept the bail application Prima Facie based on the presumption of his innocence in accordance with Section 162 (1)

The defense also pleaded that a liberal approach is taken in hearing the bail application.

The prosecution counsel, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, however, argued that it is not the temporary release of the singer that mattered but the final judgment.

He, therefore, urged the court to grant accelerated hearing rather than bail.

He added that since the lawyer of the defendant said the defendant is a celebrity, then his actions and inactions have a multiplier effect on youths in the entire federation.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo who presided over the bail hearing after listening to the defense and prosecution arguments granted the singer bail to the sum of two million naira, two sureties.

The trial has been adjourned to 22, 23 and 24 of October for accelerated hearing.

Science/Technology / [VIDEO] World's first passenger drone makes debut in China by dejirule: 6:07am On Feb 08, 2018

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EZjGKfWEDM

The world’s first passenger drone made by Chinese tech company EHang Inc. made its debut in the southern city of Guangzhou on Tuesday.

The electrically powered vehicle, also known as EHang 184, is operated by an automated flight system so passengers don’t have to bother with driving.

"None of the traditional flying vehicles can achieve the goal of fully autonomous flying, so they are still far away from common people. But our successful flight today means the scenes that we used to only see in sci-fi movies are now very close to common people," said Hu Huazhi, CEO of Chinese tech company EHang, Inc.

The self-driving drone can carry a single passenger weighing up to 100 kg for a 23-minute flight and can travel at a speed of 100 km per hour, said the company.

"(The drone can) help people to avoid the traffic on the ground, but also in other applications, we can always think about emergency rescue, or we can transport patients to the hospital, or we can do tourism, you know, fly from one island to the other," said Derrick Xiong, co-founder and CEO of EHang, Inc.

Last year, EHang and the city of Dubai reached a plan to cooperate on the development of self-flying taxis.

Politics / Reps Reject Bill Seeking To Allow NASS Sack State Governors, Deputies by dejirule: 10:05pm On Apr 05, 2017
The House of Representatives on Wednesday kicked against a bill to enable the National Assembly sack state governors and deputy governors.

The bill was sponsored by the only Senior Advocate of Nigeria in the House, Edward Pwajok (Plateau-PDP), and Ali Isa (Gombe – PDP).

The bill which was presented by the former sought to alter the Nigerian constitution to enable the National Assembly have powers to remove state governors and their deputies when necessary.

The bill was titled; A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Delete the Proviso to Section 11(4) of the Constitution to enable the National Assembly to Remove a Governor or Deputy Governor of a State in Appropriate Circumstances and for Other Related Matters.
Contributing to the debate, the House Leader Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos- APC) said the bill was more suitable for a unitary system of government.
He said it does not make any legislative or moral sense.
“Passing this bill would undermine the spirit of true federalism in Nigeria,” Mr. Gbajabiamila said.
In agreement with Mr. Gbajabiamila, Nicholas Ossai (Delta-PDP) said the success of the bill would lead to the collapse of federalism in Nigeria.

He said the bill contradicts the constitution which remains the barometer through which other laws operate.
“In times when state of emergency is declared in a state, the democratic structures are retained,” Mr. Ossai said.
Also contributing, Peter Akpatason (Edo – APC) said it was impossible to get two-thirds majority from the state Houses of Assembly to amend that section of the constitution.
“It is mission impossible,” Mr. Akpatason said.
Similarly, Ayo Hulayat (Osun-APC) said the National Assembly already has the power to remove the president and his deputy. She said empowering the National Assembly to remove the state governors and their deputies would make the federal legislators omnipotent.
After all efforts to sell the bill to his colleagues proved futile, Mr. Pwajok dramatically stepped down the bill without the speaker putting it to vote.
The Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun. who presided over plenary, said since it was stepped down by the sponsor, it will be on record that it was never debated upon.

Politics / BREAKING : Senate Suspends Ndume For Six Months - Punch by dejirule: 5:10pm On Mar 29, 2017
The Senate, on Wednesday, suspended former Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, for six months for not “making due diligence” before filing a petition against the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki and lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.

Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions made the recommendation in its report, which was considered by the lawmakers at the plenary on Wednesday.

The suspension was to take effect immediately.

The Senate had, on March 21, 2017, decided to investigate the allegation that an armoured Range Rover car said to worth N298m, but which the lawmakers said cost $298,000, seized by the Nigeria Customs Service belongs to the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki.

The move was based on a point of order raised by Ndume, who also called on the upper chamber of the National Assembly to investigate the certificate scandal involving Senator Dino Melaye.

An online news portal, Sahara Reporters, which made the allegation in a report published on March 18, 2017, said the seizure of the Sports Utility Vehicle, allegedly belonging to Saraki, was the reason why the Senate was moving against the Controller General of the NCS, Col. Hammed Ali (retd.).

The medium reported that the car was intercepted and impounded on January 11, 2017, by the service for allegedly having fake documents.

Sahara Reporters had also in another report alleged that Melaye did not graduate from the Ahmad Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State, but was parading a fake certificate.

Ndume had said previous certificate scandals involving members of the National Assembly were probed by the lawmakers.

The former Majority Leader also quoted an online medium with a report titled, ‘Dino Melaye Allegedly Did Not Graduate From University.’

“Therefore, accordingly, I will appeal we refer the matter to Ethics and Privileges to investigate so that our colleagues would be cleared and this Senate will stand as it is supposed to,” he said.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary on that day, referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, which was asked to report back to the lawmakers in four weeks.

Career / Re: A Co-worker Was Sacked Yesterday For Not Coming To Work On Public Holiday. by dejirule: 4:37pm On Jan 04, 2017
Some jobs require you to come to work on public holidays.

How would you feel if you rush a sick patient to a hospital and the patient dies because the doctor did not come to work on that day. I am sure you will be clamouring that the hospital be shut down or the Doctor sacked or imagine you have a cancelled flight because flight attendants failed to come to work. I know we like holidays in Nigeria. Your friend would have notified his Boss earlier to inform him/her of his inability to come on that day. This could have been easily averted.

Well to know if your friend have a case, does your friend run shift? Do they pay overtime for public holidays? Can you also share what was written by the HR manager. Most companies with put a clause like "connect with your manager to understand the plan"

Aproko247

http://www.aproko247.com/2015/04/08/skye-bank-customers-in-panic-withdrawal-over-jonathans-loss/

As you read this, several customers of Skye Bank are in fear and have already started withdrawing their hard-earned money in care of the bank. For some others, they have begun closing their accounts with Skye Bank because of fear of the unknown.

The reason for this, as Aproko247 learnt, is not far-fetched.

According to some of them who spoke with our correspondent, the public support the Chairman of Skye Bank, Tunde Ayeni, gave President Goodluck Jonathan is the main reason for their decision. They fear that since the President lost his bid to get re-elected on Saturday, March 28, 2015, the bank may be doomed.

It would be recalled that in December 2014, Ayeni publicly donated the sum of N2 billion for Jonathan at a dinner held in Abuja to raise fund for his re-election campaign.

This was kicked against by some shareholders of the financial institution, who frowned at the action of the bank’s Chairman.

When Aproko247 asked some of the customers, who have started closing their accounts with the bank, the reason for their actions, they were unanimous in their responses.
Most of them feared that the incoming government may mark the bank for victimisation and before something happens to their sweat, it would be safe for them to quickly move their money to other reliable banks that will protect their money.

As at press time, no official of the bank could be reached for comment as the phone number of Head, Corporate
Communications, Skye Bank, Rasheed Bolarinwa, was not reachable
