Go and import a container from China, what you pay as clearing fee in Nigeria is higher than total cost of freight + clearing at china port. Many of Una argue blindly, some of us argue with facts. Dangote manufacture his cement right here in Nigeria but the selling price is higher than what he sells in other countries simply because government collect as high as 50% of his income from cement as taxes which he openly said that he passed the burden to the final.consumet

Talking of imports from China, high import duties, and other charges are a means of protecting local manufacturers, otherwise imported and subsidised Chinese goods will be so cheap that local industries will die out.

So China unfairly subsidises its exporters in order to make their exports very cheap, yet you don't want Nigeria to take counter measures to support its own manufacturers

Ofcourse you are probably a trader who is out thinking about your personal interest only.

That's fine.

But the government is there to protect the entire economy from being subsumed by cheap China imports that keeps China rich, and Nigeria poorer in the long term.

So, 18th century Europe waited until they had a full data of everyone before the started taxing their people.

Even today, more than 200 years later, there is no single country in Europe, and probably the world that has information on every person living within their borders.

Does the US have data on everyone living in the US? Has that stopped it from taxing those it gas data on?

Also your bank account information, NIN, etc represents enough data to start with.

Dear friend, serious allegations (I assume Mr Malami's alleged infractions are serious) often involve complex and multi faceted investigation.

Such investigation takes time.

Drawing up formal charges in preparation for arraignment will take a few days or more so I expect Mr Malami will be arraigned in due course if the prosecuting authority determines that he has a case to answer.

Forget what he seems to you. You can't keep a man in custody while scouting for evidence to convict him. That's reminiscent of military regimes.

You are not a lawyer yet you write so confidently about what you appear to know little about.

To correct you, depending on the seriousness of the alleged crime under investigation, and the risk that the alleged perpetrator may flee the country, a person can, subject to the permission of a court, be held in custody while investigation is ongoing.

In this instance, a court is authorising the continuing detention of Mr Malami. That is due process, and it is constitutional.

Mr Malami can also challenge his continuing detention in court if he chooses.

The new tax laws actually protect the poor.

Failed opposition thinking they can instigate young people to go out and protest while they keep their own children behind 12-feet high fences in plum Estates in Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Kano, Port Harcourt etc

Meanwhile, in the US, UK, and Dubai where they send their girlfriends and hide their 2nd and 3rd wives, they pay very high taxes, but they want poor Nigerians to protest for them not to pay taxes here.

Ports, Ports, Ports.

It is good to build Ports if it is absolutely needed.

However, I don't believe a modern new port will completely transform the economy of an area like Apapa Ports did for Lagos.

Lekki Ports is a good example. Despite handling hundreds of billions of imports and exports, you won't even know there is a port there when you drive past it.

The largest port in the UK is in a town many people in the UK have never heard about. The 2nd largest port is in very small town of about 25,000 people most people have never heard of.

Same with the largest port in France.

Modern Ports operate like a transit point. Goods arrive, your truck comes, picks it up, and head straight out of the port, so no endless waiting in or around Lagos, no hotel accommodation needed etc The is even no need for hundreds (or thousands in the case of Apapa) of warehouses as truck move in and out of modern Ports so quickly, they are able to leave the port town within 2 hours and head for their destination without stopping in the port town for anything.

So the economic impact of a modern port on the area it is located is minimal.

This is not an argument for not building Ports. They should be built only where they are needed.

I just think people have an exaggerated expectation of the transformational impact of a modern port.

I think they will send him to a country where there is zero chance the receiving country will reject him.

The government will steer clear of European countries in order to avoid the embarrassment of rejection.

So I think he will be sent to a West African Ecowas country. The likes of Ghana, Ivory Coast, Republic of Benin etc.

No country within Ecowas will have the liver to reject a Nigeria-appointed ambassador. If they try it, a single phone call from Abuja will reset the narrative.

That is a very strong and combative language to use.

It effectively suggests the National Secretary is a liar.

Relations between the National Secretary and the Chairman must have deteriorated very badly.

It is not all about individual wealth.

The wealth of the listed Americans is more about over priced US stocks, than the economic bouyancy of the American economy.

The current US economic lead over China is not permanent.

For measure, China recorded a trade surplus of more that $1 trillion dollars between January and November 2025. The US on the other hand recorded a trade deficit of over $500 billion during the same period.

The turnaround in non-oil exports under this government is fantastic.

Even when crude oil price falls these days, the naira barely moves. That's unlike before when naira goes up and down like a yoyo depending on the price of crude oil.

In just over 2 years, Mr Tinubu's government has achieved what no government since 1999 has achieved by turbo charging non-oil exports.

So?

Why would a Governor decamp if he is not guaranteed automatic ticket.

The way some in opposition complain about every little thing is pitiful.

Politics, anywhere in the world, is a game of tricks. Only in Nigeria do you see members of the opposition expecting the ruling party to be kind, meek, considerate, and selfless when dealing with them.

Nigerian opposition parties are like a football team who let the opposing team score several easy goals because its defense is poor, only to turn around to complain that the other team is wicked for scoring too many goals

It is APC's job to look for loopholes in opposition parties and exploit them. They're not there to feel sorry for you.

It happens in every country in the world. The PDP did even worse when they were running the country.

There are thousands of military men and women sitting in barracks doing nothing at any given time.

Not every military person is engaged in fighting bandits and terrorists.

Whatever the situation, including war, every country keeps a percentage of its military men in barracks.

It is a strategic reserve.

Sending 500 (for example) military men to Republic of Benin does not affect the fight against bandits. If they don't go to Benin, they'll probably just be in the barracks anyway.

When there is a rare international emergency, urgency is needed.

Yes, if Nigeria invites the US.

The government of the Republic of Benin requested Nigeria's assistance/ intervention.

And Nigeria cannot refuse because Nigeria along with other Ecowas countries signed a mutual security agreement that if any of the Ecowas country requests assistance from any of them, they will respond.

That is why Ivory Coast military also responded to Republic of Benin's request alongside Nigeria.

Nigeria signed up to an Ecowas (International) mutual security obligation which it must fulfil.

If a co-signatory (in this case Republic of Benin) calls for security assistance, Nigeria must respond.

Sending 500 troops to that country will not make much impact on Nigeria's own security commitment at home.

Nairaland youths believe that at any given time, all Nigerian army personnel are involved in fighting bandits and terrorists.

That not true. A certain percentage of them are always left in barracks doing nothing, and will only be deployed in case of extreme emergencies.

So, deploying 1000 of those in barracks to Benin Republic will not affect anything here in Nigeria.

Many of those frothing in the mouth about the requested intervention in Benin are mostly naive youths who want a coup in Nigeria by all means because they think it is some kind of beautiful thing that will magically make the country better.

I am surprised it is still possible to pay cash at any government outfit.

The allegation of supporting a coup and his alleged disappearance from the country will cost him every asset he has in this country that the government can identify.

One thing about coup plot is, you better be successful. If not, the government you plotted against will adopt a scorched earth approach and destroy everything about you.

Even your children, and children's children will probably end up changing their surname.

If the allegation against him is proven, there is a good chance non of this man's next 2 generations will be allowed near any government position,or be allowed to contest for anything.

Them getting any job, even in a private company bearing their father's last name will be difficult.

This was especially the case during the military governments of the past. He and his family should hope things are different with this being a civilian government.

Apply and join the army to help the government fight insecurity.
