Politics / Re: Tinubu Threatens CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso by DeLaRue: 10:42am On Mar 13
I suspect the CBN will not want naira to go higher than say N1300 for a while yet.

In my view, N1450 - 1650 is the pain point range where imported goods becomes less and less affordable, and investment in local alternatives can begin to take shape. This is a higher priority for the government.

If you're one of those who believe we need to go from consumption to production, then you need to know that, that transition is unlikely to happen if dollar rate is at N700. At that rate, imports will be too cheap.

The Cbn will not even allow the naira to go anywhere near N700 for a few years to come, otherwise we will be back to square one where we are back to importing everything under the sun, with no production capacity of our own. These unbridled imports will then need to be funded by government borrowing dollars for future generations to pay.

It ain't happening.

Let's try and produce more of what we use.

Politics / Re: British "Economist" False Narrative by DeLaRue: 9:14am On Mar 13
Especially with regards to Nigeria, and I am sure many other African and developing countries, the Economists mostly parrots opposition arguments and positions.

Their latest disjointed EIU report on Nigeria read like something clubbed together by somebody who did his entire research on Nairaland, twitter, and Arise TV.

It was such an incoherent, poorly researched, slap-dash, pot purri of statements that appeared to have been lifted from Nairaland and the lips of some of the rent-an-expert commentators on Arise TV.

Politics / Re: President Bola Tinubu In Niger State by DeLaRue: 7:01pm On Mar 11
Mr President always looks dashing in blue.

At least Niger state people are not congregating on social media night and day demanding that government performs magic.

Instead these modest, hardworking, decent people have decided to help themselves by facing agriculture head-on.

Meanwhile Southern governors are trying to out - do one another with pouring tar over sand calling it road construction.

In many SW states, farmers have to pay in advance and wait several weeks before they can find a tractor to use. Instead of these Governors to help out, they're more interested in chasing fictitious 'industrialisation' agenda that yields nothing.

Politics / Re: All South West States Will Be Develop, Except Ekiti And Ondo by DeLaRue: 6:29pm On Mar 11
Your headline says Ondo and Ekiti while your comments refer to Osun and Ekiti.

Ondo is well connected. In fact if the state government was smart, Ondo should be the central distribution centre of Nigeria packed full of giant warehouses. That's because it is almost equidistant from Lagos, Abuja, Anambra etc If you're going SS, SE, and many parts of the North from Lagos, you will likely go through Ondo state.

Osun is also well connected, though like Ekiti, has no airport.

Ekiti state is the one that is more or less in a cul de sac. It's location is off the major roads by some distance. That's not a reason to say it won't develop.

Nice & moving.

Brought a tear to my eyes.

To be forcefully removed and enslaved thousands of miles away in an unknown forest/place against your will etc must have been harrowing for her/their progenitors.

It is as if the generational pain of slavery is still etched in the eyes of the lady singing in the first video.

I don't understand the language but it felt as if she was searching/crying out for something that is missing but which is never to be found.
Politics / Re: Buhari & The Vampires Around Him Never Wanted Tinubu To Be President - Omatseye by DeLaRue: 11:41am On Mar 11
The story of Tinubu's ascension to the Presidency will probably never be matched in the history of this country.

I remember a highly connected friend telling me, there's no way out for the man. He is out, he said. He was 100% sure the man would not become president.

The intrigues, obstacles, trials, plots etc, and to top it all, the famous Abeokuta 'emilokan' speech, which I now believe to be one of the most impactful political speeches of the last 50 years.

That speech sent the country into a gripping non-physical pandemonium, and engulfed his enemies in confusion they never recovered from.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

poseidon12:

I have observed that Southern Nigerians generally have this morbid fear of mentioning Fulani and associating them with any bad things they are suspected of carrying out. But the same Southerners have no qualms about mentioning Igbo. You hear about the bandits instead of Fulani bandits orterrorists
Is this because of cowardice or what

My comments are about individuals pushing their own personal economic interest. It is not about tribe. These powerful individuals are from all over the country.

My opinion is that experience (Mr Jonathan and current govt) suggests that when some of these powerfful individuals feel their personal economic interest is at stake, and they, for example, don't have access to a President of southern origin as they probably would if the case was different, they take to lashing out through sponsored underlings.

It is a theory, but not an entirely unreasonable one.

The President's media spokesman made a similar assertion on TV yesterday.

My comments have nothing to do with tribe or even politics.

You're allowing your imagination to run wild.

I am looking at this purely from the angle of vested interests who insist on having a big influence in any government to serve primarily their personal economic interest.

A Southern president is more likely to surround himself with Southern vested interests. That's the reality. Same way northern vested interests will have greater access and opportunities with a President of Northern extraction.

The difference is, when you have a Northern president, many Southern vested interests will retreat into the background and find subtle ways to get their way or they retreat completely. But it seems, from the experience of Mr Jonathan and now the current government, a minority of certain vested interests would rather create chaos if new policies threaten their personal economic interest eg fuel subsidy removal.

My comments are all about certain individuals trying to protect their personal interests. It's not about tribe at all.

These vested interests, from all parts of the country, have plagued governments going back several decades.

So you think the government can protect all electricity infrastructure in the country, morning and night, in remote areas and everywhere else?

So, 2 or 3 Policemen will be stationed under every pilon in the country every minute and every hour of the day abi. Those pylons you see in the forest when traveling, every single one of them can be secured according to you.

Truth is, there is a limit to what any government in the world can protect.

A determined minority of people can cause a lot of harm without being detected.

Politics / Re: Tinubu’s Executive Orders Strike At Heart Of Corruption In Nigeria’s Oil Sector by DeLaRue: 11:49pm On Mar 10
I personally believe Mr Tinubu is the best President we have had for a long term.

He is making very tangible changes that is going to help this country in the long run, but people are not noticing.

Even so called restructuring that people are shouting, he is changing things little by little but many people don't know how significant some of the changes are. I am sure he likes it that way. Most of the press are not even noticing.

This man is the most clever and formidable leader Nigeria has had since Babangida.

I have also been taken aback by his hardworking spirit and disarming personae.

Yet, Okpella where both Dangote and BUA are producing cement is in Edo State.

The ex-Factory price of cement is around N7,500. Even with the current price of diesel, moving cement from Okpella to Benin should not cost more than N500 per bag. That means major distributors should be selling around N8,300. Smaller distributors should be selling around N8500.

In my view, anything above N8,500 per bag in Edo State is greed.

He is wrong.

Obama wouldn't stand a chance if it is purely tribal.

Elon is tribal in his approach.

'Tribe' in the US context is mostly along Republican and Democratic lines.

Some members of either party absolutely detests the other party. Some republicans will not even buy a house if they find out their neighbour is a Democrat. Vice versa. Some even move to states where majority of the people vote for a party they prefer.

Yes, it is a minority that behaves like that, but trust me, even among the majority of Americans, there is no love lost between republicans and Democrats expecially since Trump came into the political scene.

It is endless arguments, accusation & counter accusation, frustration on both sides, mistrust etc

A lot of passion on both sides. 'We are good, they are bad' stuff.

That's tribal.

Lagos State should leave the Niger State Government alone and partner with private investors in agriculture from Ondo, Oyo, Ogun and Osun States

Large scale farming is easier in the North.

It is difficult to find large stretches of flat land in the SW. Our lands are punctuated by ancient gullies and valleys left behind by long-diasppeared streams and rivers. Then you have forests with large trees.

Big farm machinery don't work well in this sort of environment.

In the North you have flat lands that go on for several kilometres without obstruction.

Politics / Re: Which Country Has More Bureau Du Change Than Banks by DeLaRue: 2:04am On Mar 06
Op has a point.

Most states dont need more than 3 or 4. A State like Ekiti doesn't need more than 2.

Lagos can have up to 60. Anambra, Kano, Abuja, Rivers etc between 20 - 40 each.

About 320 licensed bureau de change can serve the whole country.

Yet, the Cbn is still retaining over 1000.

I guess Airpeace figured that for international flights, most Nigerians probably prefer to see white faces manning the aircraft.

Nigerians disposition towards everything foreign is now so ingrained, it has spread to every aspect of life.

We prefer to import everything even if there are local alternatives angry

Politics / Re: Southern Nigeria Are Very Lazy by DeLaRue: 12:09am On Mar 04
I agree that Southerners can do a lot more to grow their food.

That said, farming is more challenging in the South as farmers get zero support from their Governors.

Believe it or not, tractors are still a rare sight in many parts of the South. Farmers often have to wait several weeks for their turn to use a tractor as there are just too few available to rent. I understand this is not the case in the north.

Occasionally, you see a Southern Governor claiming to have bought several tractors for farmers, but these tractors end up in farms owned by politicians. Real farmers rarely have access to them. Same applies to fertilisers. There is also the herdsmen issue, and the fact that many in the South find farming too hard. Most young people in the South want easier life. They would rather be on social media blaming government for lack of food, even though I don't remember a time in the past when the federal government provided free food to the people.

Quite a number of indigenes of Edo State with both parents from the State have a Yoruba name.

These people don't claim to be Yoruba and many if them can't speak Yoruba.

Are they to be permanently denied the opportunity to vie for the highest political position in Edo State, just because of their name?

Crime / Re: IBD Dende Threatens to Kill Customs Officer for Seizing His Smuggled Goods by DeLaRue: 4:38pm On Mar 01
The police can arrest the man threatening someone 's life, investigate and charge him to court accordingly.

The evidence is there on the video.

The claim that a senior customs officer is involved in smuggling rice should also be investigated, and if found to be true, the man should be dismissed from Customs.

Aso Rock should take up these matters as a matter of urgency. The local police can't be trusted to do the right thing here.

Examples need to be made of characters like these.

You are wrong.

BDC operators were not arrested. BDCs are licensed by the CBN and operate from business addresses (shops, offices).

People who sell currency on streets are not BDC operators under any definition known to Nigerian law.

Those operating at street level do not have BDC license, and are therefore operating illegally. They can be arrested on this ground.
