Politics / Re: Influential Traditional Rulers Who Were Dethroned In Nigeria. by deluckiest(m): 11:47am On Mar 11, 2020
Saopedro:
The dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi as the emir of Kano has continued to generate reactions; some say it is expected going by recent happenings but others are still in shock. There are also those who claimed a revered traditional ruler like the emir of Kano has never been treated in such manner. Some even said such cannot happen in certain parts of the country.

But the dethronement of emirs — or those in similar positions of authority — is not an entirely new thing in Nigeria; one of such events played more than 100 years ago when the oba of Benin was deposed and sent on exile.

Here are seven influential traditional rulers who have experienced such.

OLUWADARE ADESINA, DEJI OF AKURE

Who remembers Oluwadare Adesina, the former deji of Akure, who fought with his wife in public? He was dethroned after the public brawl with Bolanle, his wife, an act that was widely described as a public show of shame. The Ondo state government deposed Adesina in 2009, after invoking sections 17(1) and (2) of the state’s chiefs law, accusing him of conducting himself in the “most dishonorable, condemnable and disgraceful manner.”

The dethroned king was also banished from Akure for six months. The council of kingmakers had called for his deposition, while his estranged wife, now late, sued him for battery.

OVONRAMWEN NOGBAISI, OBA OF BENIN

Apart from not being in good terms with then British government, part of the cause of the dethronement of Ovonramwen Nogbaisi as oba and his subsequent exile in 1897 was the murder of James Philips, then acting consul-general, during a visit to the Benin kingdom.

The oba was captured by the British authorities and tried in accordance with the British law; he was subsequently found guilty before being deposed. He was said to have angered the British government through various actions such as forbidding his people from trading with the British and barring the white men from entering Benin after he discovered a treaty signed with the government was a “tactic to annex Benin into the British Empire.”

Another of his actions that did not go down well with the authorities was the stoppage of palm oil supply to Itsekiri middle men in 1896. He reportedly took the action because they refused to pay their tribute to the oba, a move seen as puncturing the business of the British merchants in the region.
The OP should be reminded that the dethronement and subsequent sending to exile monarchs is not part of our constitution and those still practicing it such as Ganduje is doing it with outright disregard to the constition and therefore, should not be celebrated and salivated on as some of you are doing. At the bolded, it may interest the OP that the event were the Oba of Benin was sent on exile took place around 100 years ago and the British army were able to defeat the Benin warriors because of their superior military fire power. The Oba of Benin was the only king in Nigeria who stood against and fought the colonial powers who came not with genuine intention to trade but to steal from the Benin kingdom abundant wealth. The people of Itsekiri and others were under Benin empire and so the Oba 'subjects'. Your so caller dethronement of the Oba Ovorawmen N'Ogb'aise was the first and last to be carried out and I'm yet to see any governor that would attempt it. Chief Igbedion the Esama of Benin who attempted to create a parallel kingdom in the past failed and when he realises his richies and fame would only betray him and set him against the people, he made a retreat and ask the Oba of Benin for forgiveness

Abacha removed emir of kano during his regime, u need to read more bro
Read again, I said Sultan of Sokoto not Emir of Kano. In the case of Oba of Benin his rulership is dynastic or lineage and not determined or selected by any political power just like most others in the country. So of will be hard to remove him by a governor or even the president and expect the people to calm it. Even if he's forcefully evicted from the throne the people will not recognize a replacement.

It is because they knew their place, limits and boundaries. They don't run their mouths up and down like our dear Mr Sanusi. Sanusi is too much involved in politics and activism, he was bound to have many enemies and get himself involve in trouble every and then.
Imagine Oba of Benin going against Obaseki, mouth running his policies. If Obaseki decides to cause problem for him, almost all APC members in Edo will support Obaseki and that's like too much residents.
If Sultan of Sokoto decides to dabble into politics and activism like Sanusi and see himself as Tambuwal nemesis, almost all the PDP members in the state would see it as an affront and would likely support Tambuwal on any decision he takes against the Sultan.

Once a traditional ruler gets in involved in politics, he is opened himself to political drama. Governors will touch them and nothing will happen because the residents would have already divided along party lines
I understand your point though. However, come what may, the governor cannot fight and win the collective resolve of the people, regardless of the political party affiliation

I agree with you that politicians are dangerous human beings, hence traditional rulers should respect their stool and not dabble into politics. I'm Afemai but I can tell you that the Oba of Benin heads the traditional ruler council meetings in Benin which traditional rulers from Edo and Delta attend

Tambuwal should banish sultan of Sokoto and let's see if the same silent reaction meted out by the F.G government.
Biased Buhari.
Exactly my point. No state governor can touch Sultan of Sokoto and Oba of Benin. These are traditional rulers known not under the influence of political power or by any other means.

powerful indeed. No trditional ruler is more powerful than his governor.

Abeg to differ. Not all traditional rulers are under the control of their governors. I can confidently tell you that the Oba of Benin is excepted and not under the influence or control of the state government.

Do your research and you'd see that some governors that tried to undermine and manipulate the Oba stool against the wishes of the people in time past fell from Grace to grass, some of them had their life cut short.

Attention mods puskin FOD, this man is selling a script to use on a virtual telegram bot. As we know telegram bots that promise to pay $1 for 30 secs view are scams. When you get to a point to withdraw they tell you to upgrade or pay some sort of cash, which is also scam.
Why are you this wicked Mr lucky iyamah? Why are you promoting scam, just a telegram bot, no company name, location or number? Prove to me it's not a scam, well you can't.also I can copy any bitcoin transactions to use as mine, doesn't mean it's yours. Beware all
you can bark all you want. I didn't scam you or anybody to label me a scam. As clearly stated in my tutorial the script is optional. You are the wicked one here. Can you prove that you can't make withdrawal with this one. FYI, I do thorough research and I have a few that I can attest to because I used them myself. Shift please and excuse yourself from my post.

Well thought out analysis. Hope this development can be sustained to boost our local production. For the time being, I suggest the government to subsidize the commodities to reduce the high cost the average Nigeria consumers are currently experiencing

I don't want to go into details here but the records backed by facts should be taken serious and not those who fail to present their arguments with only claims with no proof of facts and you could see the bitterness in the lines because of their tribal sentiments. I will find time later to contribute to this topic.
