When a lorry zooms past, kicking up yet another red cloud of dirt, a trader turns the head of a sleeping toddler away from the road, a protective act that is as poignant as it is pointless. This is a typical day in the southern Nigerian port city of Onitsha – which last year gained notoriety when it was ranked the worst city in the world for the staggering levels of PM10 particulate matter in its air. Onitsha’s mean annual concentration was recorded at 594 micrograms per cubic metre by the World Health Organization – massively exceeding the WHO’s annual guideline limit for PM10s of 20μg/m3. PM10 refers to coarse dust particles between 10 and 2.5 micrometres in diameter, while PM2.5s are even finer and more dangerous when inhaled, settling deep in a person’s lungs. Sources of both include dust storms, gases emitted by vehicles, all types of combustion, and industrial activities such as cement manufacturing, construction, mining and smelting. Onitsha scores highly on most of the above – as do other rapidly growing Nigerian cities such as Kaduna, Aba and Umuahia, all of which also featured in the WHO’s 20 worst offenders for PM10s. In Onitsha’s very busy Okpoko market, my air quality monitor registers 140 for PM10s and 70 for PM2.5s – all way over recommended healthy levels, but still nothing compared to the readings triggered in other parts of this densely populated commercial and industrial hub. The entire vicinity of the market is perpetually dusty, as wood-sellers saw lumber into different shapes and sizes. The air here is made worse by all the fine sand particles that fly off the back of trucks as they visit one of the many dredging companies on the bank of the River Niger, just behind the wood market. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/feb/13/polluted-onitsha-nigeria-perpetual-dust-city-world-worst-air^^^^^^^^ that's what the UN said about your dirty and stinking village...[/quote] At the end of the day, this is your daily reality... |

Thetruthsayer10: you are the one living in winter wonderland of delusion u claim u have more industry but when it’s time to prove u starting blabbing bullshit. This argument of more industry has been trashed when a challenge was made and Igbo list their industry and Yoruba list theirs in the separate thread of Yoruba are more industrious and Yoruba came on top but u seem to have short term memory about things They know, but ignorant and shallow chest beating is good for their low self esteem, so they beat their narrow and empty chest anyway.. |

Chigold101: Mention any federal government project in Igboland at that time you were talking about. Okay mention even one federal government establishment in Igboland now except Universities which was not even built by FG... Okay tell me which part of Igboland FG used Yoruba money to rebuild after Awo's policy of 20 pounds... http://www.airforce.mil.ng/post-commissioning_of_projects_at_naf_base_enuguPMB just established a new command in Eniugu, Ground Training Command (GTC) with Headquarters in Enugu
In fact, the Nigerian Air Force just commissioned some housing projects in the AF base in Enugu. You people don't know anything about your villages beyond hate, anger and bitterness.

Abogwara: You still miss the point. Igbos recovered because we are trading expatriates and it involves dispersal to increase our distribution points. Remitting money back home is a very big boost to your community's economy and that is why even Igbos at home are doing well to an extent despite the orchestrated financial deprivation by the States through siting of power projects and seaports as well as cutting off oil producing communities into neighbouring States to prevent us from getting enough funds. Southeast IGR is low because the Governors know that attempt to impose heavy taxing will lead to total breakdown of law and order as it is against our culture. Igbos never bowed to or payed tribute to anyone before colonialism and Igbo women fought down taxation attempts by the colonial masters. I see what you are saying, facts, data and logic doesn't support your flawed claims.
1. You can not claim any manner of recovery when in fact the money responsible for what you are claiming comes from outside your borders. 2. State budgets and IGR in the SE are some of the lowest in Nigeria so what recovery are you talking about? You mean recovery in terms of what? The economy or people's ability to build houses in their villages from funds made outside your states?
3. Taxes and healthy IGR are strong signs of strong economic activities and we are yet to see so massive or decent growth in any of the SE states which is even a reflection of their inability to undertake any decent or strategic infrastructure renewal.4. Paying taxes is a civic responsibility, not something that you revolt against as citizens and the last thing any government should entertain when it comes to people's civic obligations like taxes because they need taxes to build infrastructures, create jobs and create the same recovery you are claiming.5. Right now, the folks building the village houses some are showing off in this thread and passing off as recovery are paying taxes in other states, they are helping in the economic recovery and activities in other states, not their own states back home.6. Where is the sense and wisdom in refusing and rebelling against taxes in your own state while gladly paying the same taxes in other states where you make your money and living from? It makes no sense. |

Abogwara: In a way you've lent credence to the fact that recovery of Igboland was not by Government but by the people themselves. Before 1999 majority of schools and roads in Southeast were done through self help including the Owerri Airport among other big projects. Generations after generations trooping to other states in Nigeria for survival and daily bread just to send money back to their villages and build village houses is not recovery since the money didn't come from your towns and villages.
Talk about recovery when you are able to boost economic growth, create jobs, stop the outflow of labor/manpower to other places for survival, give your taxes to your own states in form of IGR to build quality infrastructures instead of giving it to other states to develop their states instead of yours. The recovery is in the states you get the money from, not in your own statesThe states you get the money from are the ones starting and completing more and quality projects than your own states and your states have the lowest IGR and state budgets in Nigeria and the meager IGR and budgets means your states are poor and there's little or no economic growth and strength.
When was the last time any of your states built and commissioned any grand and quality projects?
The best project executed by the best governor in the SE according to many of you was a substandard and poorly built flyover that's crumbling into pieces after 1 year of use and haven't even done anything significant since then.
I know it's a must for you people to beat chest needlessly, but facts and logic doesn't support your claims and chest beating.
Come talk about recovery when you're able to show us the economic growth, IGR strength and numbers and your healthy state budgets. |
