Approaching Okpoko market through thick smog on the back of an okada (motorcycle taxi), the natural reaction is to cover your nose to protect yourself from the dust storm – but the effort is futile.

When a lorry zooms past, kicking up yet another red cloud of dirt, a trader turns the head of a sleeping toddler away from the road, a protective act that is as poignant as it is pointless.

This is a typical day in the southern Nigerian port city of Onitsha – which last year gained notoriety when it was ranked the worst city in the world for the staggering levels of PM10 particulate matter in its air.

Onitsha’s mean annual concentration was recorded at 594 micrograms per cubic metre by the World Health Organization – massively exceeding the WHO’s annual guideline limit for PM10s of 20μg/m3.

PM10 refers to coarse dust particles between 10 and 2.5 micrometres in diameter, while PM2.5s are even finer and more dangerous when inhaled, settling deep in a person’s lungs. Sources of both include dust storms, gases emitted by vehicles, all types of combustion, and industrial activities such as cement manufacturing, construction, mining and smelting. Onitsha scores highly on most of the above – as do other rapidly growing Nigerian cities such as Kaduna, Aba and Umuahia, all of which also featured in the WHO’s 20 worst offenders for PM10s.

In Onitsha’s very busy Okpoko market, my air quality monitor registers 140 for PM10s and 70 for PM2.5s – all way over recommended healthy levels, but still nothing compared to the readings triggered in other parts of this densely populated commercial and industrial hub.

The entire vicinity of the market is perpetually dusty, as wood-sellers saw lumber into different shapes and sizes. The air here is made worse by all the fine sand particles that fly off the back of trucks as they visit one of the many dredging companies on the bank of the River Niger, just behind the wood market.

The Senate and its younger cousin, The House of Representatives, have a fashion of summoning ministers, heads of agencies and chief executives of sensitive companies. The chambers’ committees then assume the toga of a monarch, tossing questions at the invitees as though addressing a school boy.

They act as though they are the arbiters of the people’s will. They pose for the press, speak with grandiose morality and dramatise an ownership of protocol. For instance, in the last visit of members of the National Assembly to the office of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali, they expected the Customs chief to walk down to receive them on their arrival.

But the old soldier was not a man to bait. He retorted that he was not a jellyfish to be tossed about and insisted that the lawmakers were received according to protocol. After all, it was not as if the agency did not assign its officials to receive them. The legislative comedian, Dino Melaye, roared his protest over what he saw as an act of institutional contempt.

The man of Customs had to remind them of their earlier sins when he visited. No one treated him with such courtesy. In one word, the lawmakers were hypocrites. They do so all the time. They invite heads of agencies, even for inconsequential reasons.

Hardball has learned that they want those they invite to “drop.” When they don’t “drop,” then there is trouble and the lawmakers bicker and rant and ask for this document and that paper and insist vaingloriously as though they were fishing for something.

They did so not so long ago with the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), when they harangued the man with questions and it seemed they were more patriotic than the minister.

What happened between Fashola and the lawmakers is like the vacuous quarrel between husband and wife in which outsiders wonder over their pettifogging over inconsequentials. But the real issue is known only to the sparring spouses.

Hardball learned that the lawmakers had requested Fashola’s ministry to fund their overseas trips, and the minister did not agree. He said he did not want to contravene the protocol of this democracy that forbade one arm of government to fund another. The minister had wounded their vanity.

They also bombarded him with scores and scores of companies for contracts. The minister said they did not bid and it was against the protocol of due process to grant any such deals. They also wanted to acquire a high percentage of the contracts for rural electrification of the universities, and again the minister said no.

http://thenationonlineng.net/fashola-vs-lawmakers-2/
Fashola's 3 powerful ministries and Fayem's ministry used to be the reps's main bread and butter, these are the ministries they used fo feed fat on via kickbacks and contract awards where they set up fake companies and force the ministers to award contracts to their own companies while the ministry's ministers pad their own budget that the reps always gladly approve and they've been doing this for decades, but all that stopped when PMB put all 3 ministries under Fashola who effectively blocked all their scams and looting schemes.

Poor, useless, worthless and incompetent reps, cry me a river...

Every time the PMB's minister block their yeye and corrupt moves, they start doing gra gra like headless chickens...

The got tired of messing with Fashola because he did not share his ministry's money with them, he did not fund their foreign trips and estacode scams.

The fact that they scheduled an appearance on any particular day doesn't mean the ministers must be available on that day, they are all public officials with different official engagements so what sensible people negotiate favorable days both parties can get together to discuss whatever rubbish they want to talk about.

These clowns have a ridiculous sense of expectations and flawed sense of importance, just like the clown Dino trying to mess with the Customs Boss who put the clown in his lace with cold akamu.

The useless and incompetent clowns act as if running after and summoning ministers is their only job. What about deliberating, making and passing laws to solve the countless issues facing Nigeria.

I bet they don't even know the meaning of lawmakers

Did you say power situation getting better, wasn't it last month that the Transmission System collapsed? Continue believing your own deceit. Investors confidence is high yet there's high level unemployment and poverty in the land.. Okay continue.
1.. The fact that transmission system collapsed doesn't alter the fact that our power situation is getting better.

2. We are still saddled with the same grid from since independence and 16 years of PDP, largest oil earnings in the history and the $20 billion power funds they looted did not fix the grid.

3. We are today generating more power than the grid can handle so what is the government doing, they are rebuilding the grid and the World Bank just gave us the funds.

Nigeria Attracted $12.2bn Capital Inflow In 2017 – NBS

Channels Television

Updated March 1, 2018

The total amount of foreign capital attracted by the Nigerian economy in 2017 stood at $12.2 billion, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

A report released by the agency on Thursday reveals that the new figure is a massive jump over the $5.38 billion recorded in the whole of 2016.

The NBS also put capital inflow in the fourth quarter at $5.32 billion, the strongest in the year under review.

The report revealed that investments in portfolio assets were the highest last year by 59 per cent, while other investments jumped by 32 per cent and investments into the real economy were mere 8 per cent.

In terms of origination, Nigeria saw the bulk of its foreign inflow from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Belgium.

The report read in part: “The total capital imported in the fourth quarter of 2017 was $5,382.9 million; this was an annual growth of 247.5%, and quarterly growth of 29.9%. As at the end of 2017, total capital imported into Nigeria was $12,228.6 million, an increase of $7,104.4 million or 138.7% from the figure recorded in 2016.

“The growth in Capital Importation in 2017 was mainly driven by an increase in Portfolio Investment, which went up by $5,516.2 million from the previous year to reach $7,329.1 million in 2017 and accounting for 60% of capital imported. During the reference quarter total capital imported when compared to the previous quarter increased by $1,237.8 million.”
