World's first floating village to breathe new life into old dream. Cities at sea, afloat on the waves, have long been a cherished dream for forward-thinking architects and science fiction writers. Now the world’s first fully floating community is set to take shape in the turquoise waters of a Tahitian lagoon. Blue Frontiers, a Singapore-based start-up, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the French Polynesian government to build a $60-million floating village on the south side of the main island of Tahiti, with a prospective starting date of 2020. The village will serve as a showcase and test bed for technologies that will be needed to create much larger floating communities, says Joe Quirk, president of the Seasteading Institute, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that is the driving force behind Blue Frontiers. The institute hopes one day to establish full-scale floating cities that could flourish outside the territorial waters of existing nations. Tahiti’s floating village will be just inside the island’s protective coral reef, in water about 100 feet deep some 1,000 yards from shore. Plans call for 200 to 300 people to live and work there on a dozen or so floating platforms, each about the size of a baseball diamond. The platforms will be connected by walkways into a combined area of 7,500 square feet. Quirk says he expects the floating village to thrive through a combination of eco-tourism and new aquatic industries like seaweed farming and wave power. “We’re going to have bungalows, we’re going to have apartments, we’re going to have research institutions, we’re going to have an underwater restaurant,” Quirk says. “It will be a tourist attraction in its own right, and a showcase for sustainable societies. We plan for these platforms to increase the density of sea life as animals and plants attach to it. You’ll go down into the basement and look through the glass walls and see the sea life… to really introduce people to how floating societies can be environmentally restorative.” UTOPIAS AT SEA A community afloat on the ocean, sometimes known as a “seastead,” has appealed to generations of thinkers and dreamers. Recall that seven judges- Justice Inyang Okoro and Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court; Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja; Kabir Autaof the Kano High Court; Muazu Pindiga of Gombe High Court, Mohammed Tsamiya of the Court of Appeal in Ilorin, and the Chief Judge of Enugu State, I.A. Umezulike- have been arrested and currently in detention at the SSS office. In a report by Vanguard newspaper, DSS access to the bank accounts of the detained judges and revealed that they had been taking bribes from manysources in the discharge of their duties but used the names and pictures of their wives, children and siblings to open such banks account. “When we brought in most of the children, wives and relatives of the suspects based on the papers we got from the banks, they did not even have an idea that their names had been used by the judges to open such accounts. “But you see under the Bank Verification Number, you must put in your passports, name, signature and others. So, for some of the judges, who used fake names and their wives names to open the accounts into which they paid in the proceeds of crime, they foolishly appended their signatures or used their pictures, something that gave them out. “From what we have found out, some of the suspects acted foolishly in committing the offence because they cannot prove that even if their children were to earn N1 million monthly since they were born till date,none of them can accumulate the amount of money we have traced to their accounts and the type of property they have. “Look, it may interest you to know that one of the two Supreme Court judges in our custody has a property worth N1.5 billion in one of the South-South states. If we may ask, where did he get the money to set up such project?” “As far as we are concerned, there is nothing unusual in arresting corrupt judges and taking them to court because it would be an offence against the nation to continue to turn a blind eye to mounting corruption in the judiciary.’’ The report also pointed that another judge, who is being detained and questioned, disguised as a shopper in one of the supermarkets and ended up collecting bribes in Dollars from a ‘client’ only to be caught on CCTV camera. “It was the governor, who blocked the DSS operativesfrom seizing the $2 million crime proceeds, which thejudge had made from the PDP crisis stoked by a faction backed by the governor. “But for the our highly professional operatives and service direction, we would have beaten up Wike that night so that he would have explanations to make on why he went to a crime scene at odd hours and aided a suspect to move $2 million crime proceeds to an unknown location. “But we already have an idea of where the money was moved to and we are going to retrieve it and bring the judge to trial. As a matter of fact, we are going to treat the Port Harcourt FHC judge case as a ‘special case’, given his collusion with the governor toobstruct our work. “The behaviour of the judge has worsened his case. In the last three months, the judge has been going across the Nigerian borders with other countries collecting bribes for himself and others.’’ The source also indicated that the judges might be allowed to go home as soon as they answered the questions put to them by the operatives, adding that they were being given royal treatment, in view of theirstatus and the need to give them a conducive atmosphere to speak up. Meanwhile,Police authorities is set to sanction the commissioner of police in Rivers state, Francis Odesanya for his role in the foiled arrest of a judge of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt by Rivers state governor, Nyesome Wike.

– EFCC arrests ex-deputy speaker and a leader of theAPC, Chibudom Uwuche for an alleged N5.6bn contract scam during his time at the PDP – Nwuche’s arrest comes in connection with three alleged contract scams from the Kingsley Kuku-led Presidential Amnesty Office – Nwuche allegedly helped Kuku to launder N2.8billion under the guise of sending ex-militants fortraining in 2012 Chief Chibudom Nwuche, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for an alleged N5.6billion contract scam. According to a report on The Punch, Nwuche was detained after responding to the anti-graft agency’s invitation on Monday, July 25. His arrest comes in connection with alleged contract scams from the Kingsley Kuku-led Presidential Amnesty Office. Detectives at the EFCC claim that Nwuche helped Kuku to launder N2.8billion under the guise of sending ex-militants for training in 2012. A source at the commission said: “Nwuche is being investigated over an alleged N5.6bn contract which his company, Foundation For Youth Development, allegedly received from the Kingsley Kuku-led Presidential Amnesty Office. "He allegedly got three contracts from the Amnesty Office in 2012 for the training of ex-agitators in Malaysia. Up till now, nothing was done about the contract yet, he collected N2.8bn.” According to the detective, the money was allegedly laundered through some companies, individuals and bureau de change operators back to Kuku, through a front who is also being investigated by the EFCC. Court sends ex-governor to Kuje prison (Photo) The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former governor of the Adamawa state Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. The Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded Fintiri till Friday, July 1, 2016. He is being prosecuted by the EFCC over accusationsof fraud and money laundering. Justice Ahmed Mohammed made the order after the ex-governor pleaded not guilty to all the five counts on June 30. The anti-graft agency arraigned Fintiri along with Mayim Constructions and Properties Limited (the second defendant). Shortly after Fintiri pleaded not guilty to all the charges, the court heard his bail application but delayed the hearing till Friday to deliver its ruling on it. Justice Mohammed directed that the former acting governor be remanded in Kuje prison waiting when the court would deliver ruling on the bail application. Umaru Fintiri was sworn into office as the new actinggovernor in 2014 after the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako and the resignation of his deputy, BalaNgilari, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
