The site didn't give users the access to edit and design to their taste. It just existed for verification sake. Since it will now be integrated with Google profile, and still present on the Map, what we need to do, is to optimize our Google profile. I've always wondered the essence of Map, google profile and .business.site having same content. Well, WordPress is still free. You can fully migrate your content to another website. I'll start paying for good Web host, when the web access truly start bringing in leads. For now, we just dey use am answer present online...so they know we're legit. 5 Likes 1 Share

Business / Nigerian Delivery Startup, Dropx, Shuts Down After 2 Years Of Operation by derico(m): 4:27pm On Dec 24, 2023 |
Jumia Foods, Bolt Delivery, amongst so many others that's didn't gain ground, now DropX. A Nigerian startup using a mobile app to facilitate deliveries for businesses and individuals in Abuja, has shut down after two years of its operation. DropX adds to the growing number of Nigerian startups shutting down in 2023 as the realities of the harsh economy bite harder. For this startup, several factors culminated in the founders’ decision to throw in the towel after pushing the business for two years. Founded in 2021 by Praise Alli-Johnson and Oluwatope Liasu, DropX entered the scene with ambitious goals—to transform local deliveries in Abuja by connecting businesses and individuals with swift, reliable services. The concept garnered early traction, onboarding 2,000 users enticed by free initial deliveries and enlisting 500 drivers, predominantly car owners already engaged in the gig economy via ride-hailing platforms. The CEO duo, writes it in their own words about the their journey, the wins, the challenges, the critical point. ....there's so much to learn from their journey. CLOSURE — We Threw in the Towel When we started DropX, we thought it was a great idea to send monthly updates to a few people we hold in high regard in the startup ecosystem. They may or may not read it, but personally, it served as somewhat of a board/accountability system for us. It was easy to do at first, but as things got challenging, I slowed down on the updates. As advised by "Oo", I am publicly publishing the final update for DropX as we close. Here goes: Firstly, I want to offer a sincere apology. It’s been since forever I sent the last update, and I have no excuses other than not knowing what else to share as everything seemed to go south. Recap: At DropX, we set out to build a hyperlocal delivery platform, connecting businesses and individuals needing to deliver any item with independent delivery agents. User growth: This part was a breeze; businesses in need of delivery services are abundant. Offering free delivery on the first 3 orders easily onboarded 2,000 users. Driver Growth: Getting drivers on board was also smooth, leveraging the gig mindset. We quickly had 500 registered drivers, mostly car owners. Deliveries: We were averaging a minimum of 3 deliveries per user per month. Revenue growth: Unfortunately, it felt like taking one step forward and three steps backward. And then the problems started surfacing: The balance between driver pay expectations and what users were willing to pay: To address this, we aligned our prices with those of Bolt and catered exclusively to high-value customers dealing with bulk food deliveries, cakes, luxury goods, etc. This market segment cared more about the item’s condition than the cost. Problem solved ✅ Hyperlocal and Ubiquitous was a lofty ambition: It quickly became apparent that users were scattered across Abuja, from Wuse 2 to Kubwa, from Apo to Gwagwalada. Users outside of Wuse 2, Maitama, Asokoro, and environs weren’t getting responses as they were too far apart. Over 2000 users meant nothing. We worked on getting more users in town (Wuse 2, Maitama, Asokoro, and environs, and around the Garki area). We hired corp members, and we all hit the street. Problem solved ✅ High demand: Since our drivers also worked for other ride-hailing platforms like Bolt and Uber, we found ourselves competing for time and pricing. Demand surged from 2 PM in the City of Abuja, leading to increased delivery requests on the DropX platform. We attempted to fix this by implementing a surge model like Bolt and Uber, but users disliked it, often canceling their requests. A second attempt, making surges visible to drivers only, was met with mixed success. We ended up paying the difference just to keep orders going. Problem half solved ✅ As our user base expanded, we realized the car driver model couldn’t accommodate all user segments; we needed more bikes. We hit the street and got independent delivery bike drivers on-boarded. Despite on-boarding independent delivery bike drivers, we soon learned they couldn’t serve our high-value clients adequately. The problem of options: With both bikes and cars on the platform, everyone wanted cheaper deliveries. Requests for bikes skyrocketed, and requests for cars dropped, even the high-value clients that started using DropX because we were using cars. People, shaa. At this point, bikes weren’t enough, so we are back to the problem of high demand and failed requests. After calling to beg users to try the car option when they can’t find a bike, we decided to find a solution while we throw money at the problem again — we paid drivers the difference. DropX is meant to be an Uber for logistics; we aren’t supposed to manage assets like bikes, cars, and drivers. So, we explored the option of independent offtakers, speaking with existing customers who showed interest. We started conversations with TVS to supply their small 100cc bikes as they are cost-effective and can deliver as expected (we used them at a previous logistics company owned by Tope), easy to maintain, low fuel consumption, and ensure reduced chances of accidents. Offtakers ready, TVS ready. Everything seemed promising until 100cc bikes were banned in the city due to government policy. Thankfully, no offtakers’ money had been received. Back to the drawing board. People problem: Some users engaged in off-app deals with drivers, taking cash off the app. Same users call to complain, thus snitching on themselves. Initially unhappy about losing revenue, I found a silver lining as we didn’t have to cover the delivery difference. When new sign-ups stop exciting you: We found ourselves funding deliveries from our salaries at SendPulse, not generating income. One night at 2 am, I removed the app from both Google Play Store and the Apple Store. We were drowning. Possible Government collaboration: Tope received a call from someone at NIPOST, exploring the idea of collaboration. We pitched a win-win with the goal of getting bikes everywhere and users can request items delivered using the DropX app. DropX provides the tech infrastructure, and bike investment schemes to get more bikes into the system, NIPOST manages bikes and drivers, and we share in-app charges for delivery. We pitched and pitched to different groups within NIPOST for months on-end. This is the end of 2023, and I am burned out, not seeing myself doing this in 2024. While navigating these challenges, we continued funding delivery differences just to stay afloat. We even found ourselves relieved on days with low delivery requests. Why Didn’t we raise funds? We believed we hadn’t achieved PMF. We couldn’t keep burning cash and add someone else’s cash to the fire. We thought that once we could stop covering delivery cost differences and account for at least a 10% cut in delivery fees, we could claim PMF. User acquisition wasn’t an issue; I’m particularly adept at growth. Even after removing the free delivery lure and stopping coupons and referral bonuses, people kept downloading the app. I strongly believe VC funds are for growth after stabilising. If I were a VC, I won’t give us money at the stage we were in. Did We fail? I’d say we just give up. We chose to avoid the sunk-cost fallacy. The concept of hyperlocal delivery on demand sounds great, but it demands more than just a great app and technology. All the fancy route optimisation and device tracking can’t overcome actual human factors and infrastructure deficits. I’d say we got tired; as the user base grew, so did our spending on nearly every delivery. That’s nothing to smile about. What Could We Have Done Differently? Maybe not started at all?! Perhaps run as a traditional delivery company supported by a fancy app for order receiving and tracking, but where’s the fun in that? (We’ve done that before.) Maybe pushed the NIPOST collaboration better, but elections change everything, and a 4-year plan isn’t ideal. Or maybe raised a large sum of money for a massive onboarding blitz, fixing the chicken-and-egg problem in one go. Maybe, just maybe?! So, What’s Next for Us? Tope: Tope left the bank (FCMB) to join SendPulse, leading Business Development and Suport for the Africa market, working with notable clients from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya. She left SendPulse in November to explore other things. Completing her CFI, she’s keen on returning to finance, working in Investment, and the like. Praise: Having led an international SaaS company’s regional division, I’m now heading SendPulse’s Startup support initiative in the African market, providing growth support and tools for startups, including growth credits up to $5,000. I’ll be sharing my experiences more on social media. I’m starting something else (I might be mad or something), let’s see how it goes. I’m open to any work opportunities, excelling in Startup support, growth, and the idea of Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR), and anything in VC (analyst, scout, etc.) sounds good. We’ve spent a lot and learned a lot. Building is hard but fun. Thank you. Love, Praise Alli-Johnson. He posted on LinkedIn.
