Switzerland is the best place to be born in 2013, a new global survey laying bare the 'lottery of life' reveals.

Babies born in the land-locked nation of just 8million are the 'luckiest' in the world according to researchers who also named Nigeria as the worst place to start life.

Britain is ranked just 27th, behind the likes of South Korea, Kuwait and Chile, and well down on the 7th place it achieved in a similar survey 25 years ago.

Politics / Governor Yakowa, Former NSA, Azazi Feared Dead In Crashed Naval Chopper by deshysmalls(m): 6:55pm On Dec 15, 2012
Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State and former National Security Adviser Andrew Owoye Azazi apparently died in a helicopter that crashed today in Bayelsa State, a reliable source has told SaharaReporters.

Governor Yakowa and Mr. Azazi, a retired military general who served as chief security adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, were among passengers in the ill-fated helicopter.

Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) had earlier indicated that the agency had activated a search for a crashed helicopter.

Our sources had earlier disclosed that the crashed chopper was carrying “some major political figures.” As at the time of going to press, Saharareporters was unable to confirm the identity of any other passengers in the ill-fated chopper.

Governor Yakowa and Mr. Azazi were among many political figures who reportedly attended the burial of the father of senior presidential aide Oronto Douglas. The funeral event took place in the Nembe area of Bayelsa State earlier today. SaharaReporters learnt that the crashed helicopter was one of several helicopters that some well-connected people to the funeral.

The crash comes on the heels of a plane crash on October 25, 2012 that has left Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State brain-damaged. Mr. Suntai was moved to a hospital in Germany where he remains in poor shape, unable to recognize his visitors or to speak.

Autos / How Arik Plane Almost Killed Mad Man Who Wandered Onto Lagos Airport Runway by deshysmalls(m): 2:34pm On Nov 18, 2012
Arik Air flight nearly crushed a man in ragged clothes and dishevelled hair who stood few metres away from the touch down area at the domestic runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, known as Runway 18L about 4:30 pm last Tuesday.

THISDAY learnt that another Arik Air flight bound for Uyo was waiting at the threshold of the runway, known as holding point for the arriving aircraft to land so that it would take off, but as the aircraft was to touch down the passengers and the cockpit crew of the waiting aircraft saw a man walking about near the landing point of the aircraft and escaped being crushed by the tyres and the wing of the aircraft.

When the man identified as mad because of his slovenly, ragged appearance was spared by the aircraft that landed, he walked to the threshold where the Uyo bound flight was waiting and began to knock at the aircraft door, requesting that door be opened for him.

Eye witness account disclosed that the pilot of the aircraft was afraid that the man might walk farther towards the engine of the aircraft and he would be sucked in and roasted, so he quickly switched off the engine of the plane, sustaining the system of the aircraft, including the air conditioning with auxiliary power unit (APU).

At that point the situation had become an emergency so he quickly called the Control Tower and Aviation Security, informing them about the man walking about in the most restricted area of the airport.

The pilot who nearly landed his aircraft on the man was said to have also called the Control Tower immediately he landed and the incident was recorded on the log book by the Air Traffic Controllers who were on duty at the time the incident happened.

“The pilot said that he feared for the man’s life when he came knocking on the aircraft door because few steps would have taken him into the engine of the aircraft that would have roasted him and that was why he quickly switched off the engine. That would have been catastrophic and tragic had it happened that way,” the source explained to THISDAY.

It took 20 minutes before two aviation security vehicles coming from the opposite sides, one from the international side of the runway and the other from the General Aviation Terminal (GAT)and converged before the mad man.

Aviation Security officials jumped out, held him and forced him into one of the vans and whisked him away and it was then that the controllers allowed the aircraft lined up at the holding point to begin to take off.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) explained that the man probably scaled the perimeter fencing to gain entry to the runway.
This incident reinforces the fact that the in spite of the efforts made by the agency, the airport is still porous.

About two weeks ago a stowaway was found dead at the wheel well of Arik Air aircraft and that was the third time a stowaway would be found dead in the wheel well of aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Few years ago Air France flight nearly hit heads of cattle at the runway of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

Runway incursion has been a regular occurrence at the nation’s airports and this is attributed to lack of perimeter fencing at most of these airports and that is why the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has not certified any of these airports because they have not met accepted safety standards for their certification.

Celebrities / IYANYA----I Can Marry Yvonne Nelson by deshysmalls(m): 12:26pm On Nov 18, 2012
Not long ago, there was a thread about Yvonne Nelson claiming she would say yes if Iyanya proposes. Now the Kukere crooner has also indirectly returned the favour.

For the very first time, MTN Project winner, Iyanya has come out to state the position of things between himself and the Ghanaian top actress, Yvonne Nelson. Iyaya in his explanation said that himself and Yvonne have come a long way even before his song became a hit. In a polite and diplomatic manner, he admitted that they are just friends but they do ‘things’ together.

Here him ‘’ she is a friend. I met her in Ghana, before my hit songs even came out. We hang out, we do things friends do together, nothing else.’’.

You should know what friends do. We hold hands and talk. We just have fun. We go out together too and that’s why you see all the pictures you see. She is a cool lady anytime. If it is God’s will she is someone I can marry, why not, she is fine enough. Ghanaian girls are cool and she’s definitely one of them,’’ he said.

How do you define poverty??
The president of Uruguay (who gives away 90% of his $12,000 monthly salary to the less-privileged and is reputed to be the world's poorest president) is quoted as saying, 'I'm called the poorest president, but I don't feel poor. POOR PEOPLE ARE THOSE WHO ONLY WORK TO TRY TO KEEP AN EXPENSIVE LIFESTYLE, AND ALWAYS WANT MORE AND MORE'. Thought-provoking isn't it?

Foreign Affairs / Kenyan Mother Names Twins Romney And Obama. by deshysmalls(m): 6:00pm On Nov 13, 2012
On Tuesday, Millicent Owuor gave birth to twin boys at the Siaya District Hospital in Nyanza province, Western Kenya, the local newspaper The Standard reported. Naming her two sons after the presidential candidates would help her “remember the historic U.S. elections for a long time, both the winner and the loser,” the 20-year old mother told the nationa
l daily.

Siaya is the home district of Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr., who was born in the village of Nyang’oma Kogelo in 1936. Just days ahead of the election, the village’s witch doctor, 105-year old John Dimo, had accurately predicted the outcome of the elections by tossing shells and bones and assessing the position they landed. “Obama is very far ahead and is definitely going to win,”

He attended Loyola college in Ibadan bofore proceeding to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka from 1961-1963.

The political stalwart also studied at the university of Ibadan in 1971.
Before veering into politics, Adesina worked in private educational institutions.

Efforts to reach the Oyo state Commissioner for Information Barr. Bosun Oladele and CAN Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed were fruitless, but an insider said the death of Adesina has stirred a murky cloud in the ancient city.

Politics / Re: Why Are Nigerians In Diaspora So Bitter? by deshysmalls(m): 6:40pm On Oct 05, 2012
I live abroad myself, and many Nigerians abroad are bitter and frustrated by the way things are. but do you think they have no reason to be frustrated? Its so sad living in another man's country where they have little or no naturally resources, but with the proper management, they were able to lift humanity to the proper standard. hvaing said that, Its bad if they say bad things about us to the outside world and think that things would never work out.

I think our leaders are just foolish, because many things that they spend billions of dollars and decades in doing can be achieved in a twinkle an eye with lesser amount. Imagine a Nigerian in Diaspora coming to Nigeria just to renew his/her passport because the Nigerian embassy cant do it for them, watching all sort of crimes committed by Nigerian in the news with your foreign friends, everybody back home trying to dupe you just because you live abroad and they assume that you should be rich, oppression and all sort from people on top, etc

I hope things change soon, but saying bad or not believing that things will work out is like killing all hopes.

Politics / Nigeria’s First Lady Hospitalized In Germany by deshysmalls(m): 11:36pm On Sep 02, 2012
Nigeria's First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has been in a hospital in Germany in the last four days, Abuja State House sources have told SaharaReporters, undergoing treatment for food poisoning.

The sources say Mrs. Jonathan, who is also a Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State civil service, was airlifted to the hospital by an air ambulance in midweek under emergency medical conditions.

Presidency sources stated that the emergency airlift departed for Wisbanden, Germany, but it is not clear if her treatment was being undertaken in that city. They said she was only able to speak earlier today, four days after her arrival, because the illness had been so severe that she lost her voice.

Our sources could not say when she will return to the country. Nigeria’s political leaders and their families routinely seek expensive medical attention abroad, an irony occasioned by their failure to develop the same facilities at home. In the past few years, two former First Ladies have died on foreign hospital beds

This picture has been making rounds here in Europe, as a 22 years old second year student this is the job i am doing (part time) and i can proudly say i love it.
Not only because i can afford a house and car of my own(No bragging intended), but also because you know there is dignity in labor here and you are treated and addressed with respect irrespective of what you do which severely lacks in our part of the world.
Apart from the obvious, most people prefer these odd jobs abroad because it gives you flexibility and you can possibly earn almost twice of what some people with white collar jobs earn because you can do double the number of hours they spend in their offices during the day, provided you have your permits intact.
So my question to you guys is what would you prefer...
(1)An office/less stressful job with good pay or
(2)An odd job that gives you flexibility plus a possibility to earn more
I am sure the answer will depend on individual understanding/preferences.
In addition to the above, can anyone suggest a legal job an undergraduate in Nigeria can do that will make him earn over 200,000 naira a month and will also not affect his/her studies because here you can earn more.

(Note)I am neither trying to change your mindsets nor get into an argument, but just to give a piece of my own humble opinion on this topic and it is also imperative to know that this is based on my own experience, so it may vary with individuals.

Muhammadu Buhari (born December 17, 1942) was a Major General in the Nigerian Army and a former military ruler of Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985. He also ran unsuccessfully for the office of the President of Nigeria in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections.

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida CFR DSS mni (born August 17, 1941), popularly known as IBB, was a Nigerian Army officer and military ruler of Nigeria. He ruled Nigeria from his coup against Major General Muhammadu Buhari on August 27, 1985 until his departure from office on August 27, 1993 after his annulment of elections held on June 12 that year.

When these men began to rule Nigeria, i wasn't formed in the womb. After i was born, there was and there still is a popular saying that... Youths are the leaders of tomorrow. Fast forward to 2012 these guys still harbor the ambition of contesting the 2014 elections.
