My suggestion is look out for growing organizations and do their certifications.

For those going to the red/blue side, check out TCM Security. Their courses and certificates are $29. Sometimes they reduce their learning to as low as $1. They are also gradually getting recognised. Their penetration certification is $249/$299. I'll double-check. Note that I'm not marketing for them but I won't be surprised if the DoD adds them to their list of requirements.

Also for those looking at CCSP, go and do CCSK. Subscribe to their newsletter. They sometimes give up to 40% reduction on the exam.
