Twitter has been reconstructing its platform by sealing several deals to enable more engagements for users when using their accounts and part of this engagement statistics is the use of videos which have proved to be a veritable tool in multiplying users and keeping them engaged on social networks. Twitter has decided to exploit the prominence of videos on its platform just like YouTube has been doing over the years. According to Recode, Twitter will achieve this purpose through their “Amplify program” which will see Twitter partner with video creators to share revenue in define program just like YouTube. Twitter’s revenue share program will see video creators carting away 70% of the ad revenue while the Twitter keeps the rest of the revenue making it more enticing for video creators. Amazing! This revenue share program is exclusive only to videos on Twitter and not to videos on other platforms owned by the company. The interesting thing about the Amplify program is that the content by the video creator is not bound with Twitter as they can post same videos on other platforms. The only sad part at the moment is that Twitter users outside of the US will have to wait till this feature is rolled out globally. This move by Twitter is impressive as it will help increase its daily active users on its platform and with its financial package, YouTube might just be in for some serious competition. Progressive Web App (PWA) is more or less an improved or developed fusion of a regular website, mobile app which combines the best of the web and the best of apps. They are quite beneficial to users from the very first visit in a browser tab with no installation required. In light of the above, Opera which is one of the most used mobile browser in Nigeria has teamed up with Google to strengthen access and usage of Progressive Web App (PWA) for its millions of mobile subscribers in Nigeria. Speaking about the collaboration, the Opera for Android Product Lead, Andreas Bovens, said “In Nigeria users are cost conscious and often do not download apps and are averse to updates – the trend is to ‘side-load’ apps from PCs where they are already installed on to mobile phones. PWA provide the convenience of an app, including push notifications, along with faster speeds and offline support; without the data cost. PWA also takes up less storage space than traditional applications making them ideal for use on budget smartphones.” Bovens further highlighted that “PWA offer a great new way for developers and businesses in Nigeria to reach users right in the web browser, without requiring them to download additional apps –and all that in a very lightweight, user friendly package. We can’t wait to see how PWA technology will shape Nigeria’s mobile internet space in the coming years.” “PWA starts out in web browsers, just like normal websites. When a user continuously uses the site, an install banner is shown, allowing users to add the site to their home screens. PWA only requests these permissions when needed, allowing users to better control their privacy,” said Bovens. Google took the stage at I/O 2016 back in May to unveil its new messaging app – “Allo and Duo”, the two new apps is for smart messaging and video calling. While Allo is for text messaging, Duo on the other hand is a video calling app that allows a quick one-to-one video calling. Google has gone ahead to make good its promise by rolling out the Duo video calling app to users on both the Android and iOS globally. Though it has been announced officially by Google that the app is now available globally but not everyone can access it yet as some regions may have to wait for some days before they can install the app from Play Store. Though the Google Duo is already available in application package on APKMirror for you to give it a try and explore the amazing features that comes with the Duo app. The Duo app presently works only as a mobile video calling app and I think Google did this to keep the hangout relevant for conference video calling. Google Duo app is designed to allow access to video calls whether you are using a fast internet connection or a slow connection, be it an Android device or an iOS device, in any part of the world whether in Lagos, Nairobi, New York or Minnesota. Duo also makes use of the phonebook to allow you contact anyone on the list. One of Duo’s outstanding features is the Knock Knock which allows user see a live video of who is calling before answering the call and also to ensure that users have some sense of privacy, the video calls made through the Duo app are encrypted end-to-end. Internet is very important in our day daily activities with most users accessing the internet with their mobile devices for purpose of research, communication and other uses. According to a research, over 4 billion people are yet to be connected to the internet with 10 percent of the world's population still living outside the range of cellular connectivity as at the end of 2015. In an effort to grant easy and affordable access to internet connectivity around the world, Facebook announced the launch of Opencellular which he described as a critical aspect of the company’s efforts at connecting the world. Internet is still not affordable and available in many parts of the world especially remote areas with necessary cellular infrastructure required to support basic connectivity and more advanced capabilities like broadband can’t be afforded in such areas. According to the announcement, “ the OpenCellular access platform over time will be open-sourcing the design. We will also work on other elements like the software management system, hardware design, baseband, amplifier, filter, mounting device, and antennas. With OpenCellular, we want to develop affordable new technology that can expand capacity and make it more cost-effective for operators to deploy networks in places where coverage is scarce. By open-sourcing the hardware and software designs for this technology, we expect costs to decrease for operators and to make it accessible to new participants.” Read more and see more photos of the OpenCellular system:http://www.digitalheadlinez.com/2016/07/facebook-to-deliver-fast-and-affordable.html
