CreativeWeb: You said they coded those themes from scratch. Exactly. That is my point. That we should start coding themes and plugins for wordpress. Cms is good, but like I said earlier, we should not just use wordpress like babies. We should use it like a pro. We should be ready to be developing wp themes and selling at themeforest. We should start forking wp and turning it around and extend it.
We should learn web development and cms. If we get project for custom web dev, we wil do it. If we get project for cms, we will do it. The reason why it seems we ar using cms a lot is because we get projects that mostly demand for cms.
If you hav passion to develop an application like cloudflare, youtube, google, voguepay, etc, then go for it. If you want to be a good web developer that specializes in building themes for cms, then go for it. Alright bro. I hardly work for people sha. Unless as a support expert! God on my side in the next few years u will see why I didn't run my site on smf or WordPress. Took me 18 months to arrive at the current stage and I am still developing the project. We need a few people that will stay away from cms to take naija to the next level. |

CreativeWeb: The founders of themeforest.net, eleganttheme.com, wootheme.com are all millionaires. It's not every web developer that will invent a product, service or application. There are those that wil be coding themes, templates, plugins, modules for cms. Nobody is afraid of coding stuff from scratch. Those guys u mentioned coded those theme from scratch and am very sure they have their own custom made applications on some other platforms. They didn't become millionaire from using cms without using their head to program. |

shang002: Their is alot of problems associate with the use of CMS, firstly it is easy to attack by hackers because most of the code were stored in the database. secondly, the customization is limit compare to u developing raw. thirdly, alot of unneccessary files which re not useful but gaining some resources from the server. fourtly, templates can be used by 1 millions folks either free or paid ones. lastly, you re still a consumer not a programmer!!! Lol nice one |

CreativeWeb: Because google knew there was no need of a new OS. Because google knew that the world was and still comfortable with the OS on ground. But there was a great need that time to reinvent the search engine and so they gave us a search engine. Writing cms off is not fair. Whites don't relax like us sha. Founders of cloudflare are now billionaires what if they used WordPress to start a blog instead, will they be where they are now? |
Webmasters › Re: Reasons Why Nigerians Love Cms, Plugins And Frameworks A Lot by directonpc(m): 8:53am On May 03, 2015 |
CreativeWeb: Pls read up and see some of my points I highlighted.
I am not against coding from sratch. I am not against using cms or framework to speed up development.
What I want us to do is to learn how to write codes and also how to use cms and framework. If a project demands writing codes from scratch, we wil do it. If it demands using a cms, we will do it. And since most clients prefer cms, we wil continue to serve them.
Cant we just develop or invent something for the world to use? Something like facebook, google, whatsapp? Again, I said, not every web developer has the passion to invent anything because of what invention entails (maintenance, updates, security patches, support, etc) and so they are ok offering services to clients and making a good livig. Again, the mark of a good developer is not whe he develops a custom application. He can also be known for developing themes and plugins for wordpress. Like Larry Page is known for developing theme for WordPress? |

CreativeWeb: Will it be fair to ask you to: 1. Develop your own programming language and stop using php, ruby or python?
2. Develop your own operating system and stop using windows, linux or ubuntu?
Pls dont just write cms off. I want a situation a Nigerian can become a wordpress guru and be known to have developed several plugins and themes for wordpress. I want a Nigerian that will be part of wordpress core team and develop security patches and updates for wordpress.
The mark of a programmer is not flexing muscle and coding an OS from scratch alone. A good web developer lavarages on the strengths of others. 99% of web developers all over the world are using one cms or framework to speed up development.
If you want to build an application like whatsapp, that is a different thing. Not every programme is required to develop an application like whatsapp. Building a custom app is not the only mark of a developer. A good developer can also be known by developing themes and plugins for wordpress. Your post is useless. Very useless. Did Google create a new OS before starting their search engine? |

CreativeWeb: I do not think you understand my post. Read it again and tell me why facebook is using wordpress in newsroom.fb.com and why google is using wordpress in gv.com.
Using cms is good. Coding a custom application is good. You cannot accept one and condemn another.
It's like asking why people use paypal or voguepay to accept payment when they can code their own payment processing application. So why didn't they build Facebook.com with a cms and google.Com with cms? Imagine if LindaIkeji had talented programmers how blog could have grown into something bigger. Coding is good. CMS is just a small thing |

talk2hb1: My Aim is to deliver on time and on budget, not to show my programming prowess to clients who doesn't care how the result was achieved. The end justifies the means. It's not always about client. Who was the client of the founder of whatapp? Some times u need to think and make ur imagination come to live via coding and not cms |

talk2hb1: Those were custom solutions and who told you they dont run on framework? The koko below of the thread is that, it is far more easier to extend those cms or leverage on frameworks than coding everything from scratch. Considering how much efforts were put into developing those frameworks, the experience of the contributors to the framework, and you developing your own custom solution from scratch to compete with those frameworks out their In terms of security and functionality. I agreed to the fact that frameworks and cms are not silver bullet to system development, but they have done great works developing those system. So what framework did Google use? Una laziness sha. Check Baidu.com they reinvented the wheel it paid off |

@op so we should forget about programming then? And learn how to use cms? They is more to development than working for a client. What CMS is Google.com using? What cms is quickteller.com using? Or what cms is YouTube using? |

I have took out time to read tru comments here. Thanks for your feedback it will help me to understand how our people think. I have 3 points for you guys. 1. A developer is not always a business man(like coding for some clients) am very sure the person that developed WordPress didn't code it for a client and he didn't build it on some existing CMS. Let's have a sense of responsibility and make something new (like an invention). 2. For guys that are saying NL is based on SMF or some other framework if you look at NL over the years new features built from scratch are coming in, like the post sharing system, front page update * feature and the new AD system. NL might not be perfect but I can see some innovation in it. 3. Let's know that the use of cms and frameworks to some levels can kill your skills. |

Just wondering why our 99% percent of our websites and applications are based on some wysiwyg cms or framework. The sites with high traffic in Nigeria are mostly e-commerce sites and blogs running on one platform that was developed by some white guy somewhere. Even simple non-dynamic html sites are built from templates in Nigeria. We are the Giants of Africa and this practice is won't up our game in the web development industry if u ask me. Is it that we are scared of coding or we are dull?
*NL isn't perfect but am happy it's not just another WordPress blog. I pray the owner can get a good team to make NL more social. Please CMS lovers do not insult me if you don't like what am saying. |
