Tony Anenih, chairman of the board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), underwent an open-heart surgery in an unnamed UK hospital last month, TheCable understands. A member of the family, who confirmed the development, said it was “only God” that saved the life of the 82-year-old politician.

The heart condition was accidentally discovered, TheCable learnt, when the former minister of works and housing was preparing to return to Nigeria after a visit to the UK. He was said to have complained of “irregular heartbeat”, prompting a family member to make an emergency call for an ambulance.

“The ambulance arrived within five minutes and he was taken out on a stretcher, with paramedics giving him oxygen support. It was at the hospital that it was discovered that he had some heart issues which he had not experienced before,” the source said. Anenih was immediately booked in for a surgery, which was successful. He returned to Nigeria shortly before Christmas but he is “looking pale”, another family source told TheCable.

Anenih is regarded as one of the most powerful politicians in Nigeria between 1999 and 2015 when the PDP controlled power. He was very close to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan while they were in power.

In 2007, he fell out with Obasanjo following a tussle for the chairmanship of the board of trustees – a position Obasanjo coveted but which Anenih eventually got. The PDP constitution, amended to pave the way for only Obasanjo to assume the position, was re-amended to allow others to have a go.

Anenih marked his 82nd birthday on August 4, 2015.

Video released by Army? Where in that video did the shiites lift a finger or slap any army officer beyond holding cutlasses which couldn't be compared to guns held by Army in the same video. Let's even assume they were attacked at that moment, please what justifies the return by the Army the following day to kill unarmed civilians? Please let's not support injustice. I don't have to prove you wrong on whether I campaigned for Buhari or not. Let's assume laws of the land were broken, does the law broken carry death sentence? Does the Quran say when you break law by blocking road, death sentence is the reward? You can continue to delude yourself that everything is alright with this killing but let's pray this doesn't happen to someone close to us.

Nothing justifies this killings. I personally lost my respect for Buhari after this massacre. I campaigned on the streets of Lagos for Buhari with my resources but I just can't wrap my head to support this indiscriminate use of excessive force against harmless civilians. Since this incident, everyday I wake up, I struggle to rebuild my love and hope in Buhari but I just couldn't find that strength anywhere. The humanity in me seems to never forgive him for this atrocity. More annoying is the fact that he seems to have ordered that massacre. I'm a muslim and a sunni but I believe Allah hasn't commanded us to take innocent lives by whatever guise even if we feel they don't practice the religion in the right way prescribed by the holy Quran. May Allah forgive everyone of us. This is beyond me walahi.

You said if the past regime had acted this way,Boko haram wld ve been a thing of the past,but you systematically forgot to mention that it was this same extra-judicial killing of the Boko haram leaders and followers,that led to the rise of the most dreaded terrorist group(bokoharam).
Indeed one may be forced to concur to the assertion by some people that,Nigeria most likely is a zoo,over 300 Nigerians killed in one short event and everybody turns a blind eye,like nothing happened. Even in the zoo,animal lives are preserved by its care-takers,inspite of the obvious lawlessness of the animals.
Am waiting for such proficiency to be applied by our army in stopping the menacing rampage of Buharis fulanis kingsmen,who has constituted about the 2nd most dreaded terrorist group on planet earth. Who have been on rampage in our rural areas and not Shiites observing their religious right.

GEJ got 12 million votes. There are at least 12 million Nigerians who wanted GEJ to remain PRESIDENT. He would have won the election, and lost the country.
These crooks would still be weclome visitors at Aso Rock, increase in BH attacks would have been blamed on APC, economic failure would have also been labelled as sabotage.

Buhari isn't the best. But I think in the interest of the nation, we made a right choice.
