By far the biggest issue I faced when having my first baby was how to prepare for birth. I had loads of books and I felt really passionate about natural childbirth, but actually getting through labor? I didn’t have a clue! Over the last 13 years I’ve had six babies, all born at home naturally. One arrived before the midwife! My last three births were even more amazing than the first three because I really started to research how to have the safest, smoothest births I could. I don’t have it all figured out because every birth is different, but I’ve finally discovered a process that works extremely well to help mamas prepare for natural birth. In this guide, I walk you through simple baby steps you can take to plan your baby’s natural birth. Here’s a brief outline on preparing for your baby’s birthday: Step 1: Decide if natural birth is right for you Step 2: Understand how drugs & procedures impact labor & baby Step 3: Find out why pregnancy diet is so important to birth Step 4: Choose your care provider & where to birth Step 5: Get your baby in a good position for a smooth birthing Step 6: Discover how to work with baby and handle labor Read more - http://www.thelivefeeds.com/ |

What do I wish for you in the new year of 2016? The same things I wish for myself: To be intentional about the way I treat others, especially those closest to me. It is odd how we will treat strangers more politely than the people we say we love. These are the things I want TO DO: •To be respectful, which means to be supportive and encouraging, to be accepting of what someone tells me they need from me (or don't need) and to be accepting of who they are — as opposed to trying to make them over into my own image. •To be a good listener — listening, not just to hear, but listening to understand, even when I do not agree. •To be courteous and willing to negotiate differences rather than engage in arguments. These are the things I want NOT TO DO. •I don't want to be critical. Other people have the right to be different and do things their own way — and over the years I've learned my criticism never changes anyone. It only creates distance. •I don't want to blame someone else for how I feel. Whatever my feelings and reactions are to someone else's behavior tells me something about me — and the feelings are my responsibility to manage in a way that doesn't hurt me or hurt another. •I don't want to be a complainer. If there is a problem I want to take care of it, not whine about it. •I don't want to threaten or punish. •I don't want to bribe someone to do what I want them to do, because bribing is nothing more than rewarding someone so I can be in control. All these things I wish — for myself and for you. And if we do this, we will create places of peace wherever we are — at work, at play, with those we say we love the most. Salt Uses & Tips: Health & Beauty Gargling - Stir 1/2 teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water for use as a gargle for sore throats. Cleaning teeth - Mix one part salt to two parts baking soda after pulverizing the salt in a blender or rolling it on a kitchen board with a tumbler before mixing. It whitens teeth, helps remove plaque and it is healthy for the gums. Washing mouth - Mix equal parts of salt and baking soda as a mouth wash that sweetens the breath. Bathing eyes - Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a pint of water and use the solution to bathe tired eyes. Reducing eye puffiness - Mix one teaspoon of salt in a pint of hot water and apply pads soaked in the solution on the puffy areas. Relieving tired feet - Soak aching feet in warm water to which a handful of salt has been added. Rinse in cool water. Relieving bee stings - If stung, immediately wet the spot and cover with salt to relieve the pain. Treating mosquito and chigger bites - Soak in saltwater, then apply a mixture of lard and salt. Treating poison ivy - Soaking the exposed part in hot saltwater helps hasten the end to poison ivy irritation. Relieving fatigue - Soak relaxed for at least ten minutes in a tub of water into which several handfuls of salt has been placed. Removing dry skin - After bathing and while still wet give yourself a massage with dry salt. It removes dead skin particles and aids the circulation. Applying facial - For a stimulating facial, mix equal parts of salt and olive oil and gently massage the face and throat with long upward and inward strokes. Remove mixture after five minutes and wash face. Removing tattoos - Called salabrasion, this technique involves rubbing salt on the tattoo and requires several treatments. Healing is required between sessions, but there is virtually no scarring. CAUTION: This is a medical procedure that can be done only by a physician. Merry Xmas!!! CC: lalasticlala, sihilove |
Salt Uses & Tips: Cleaning Cleaning brass - Mix equal parts of salt, flour and vinegar to make a paste, rub the paste on the brass item, leave on for an hour or so, then clean with a soft cloth or brush and buff with a dry cloth. Cleaning wicker - To prevent yellowing, scrub wicker furniture with a stiff brush moistened with warm saltwater and allow to dry in the sun. Cleaning grease spots on rugs - Some grease spots can be removed with a solution of one part salt and four parts alcohol and rubbing hard but carefully to avoid damage to the nap. Extending broom life - New brooms will wear longer if soaked in hot saltwater before they are first used. Removing wine stains - If wine is spilled on a tablecloth or rug, blot up as much as possible and immediately cover the wine with salt, which will absorb the remaining wine. Later rinse the tablecloth with cold water; scrape up the salt from the rug and then vacuum the spot. Removing rings from tables - White rings left on tables from wet or hot dishes or glasses can be removed by rubbing a thin paste of salad oil and salt on the spot with your fingers, letting it stand an hour or two, then wiping it off. Restoring sponges - Give sponges new life by soaking them in cold saltwater after they are washed. Settling suds - If a washing machine bubbles over from too many suds, sprinkle salt on the suds to reduce them. Brightening colors - Wash colored curtains or washable fiber rugs in a saltwater solution to brighten the colors. Brighten faded rugs and carpets by rubbing them briskly with a cloth that has been dipped in a strong saltwater solution and wrung out. Removing perspiration stains - Add four tablespoons of salt to one quart of hot water and sponge the fabric with the solution until stains disappear. Brightening yellowed cottons or linens - Boil the yellowed items for one hour in a salt and baking soda solution Removing blood stains - Soak the stained clothing or other cloth item in cold saltwater, then launder in warm, soapy water and boil after the wash. (Use only on cotton, linen or other natural fibers that can take high heat.) Removing mildew or rust stains - Moisten stained spots with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, then spread the item in the sun for bleaching; and finally, rinse and dry. Color-matching nylons - Good nylons that don't have a match can be made the same color by boiling them a few minutes in a pan of lightly salted water. Fixing sticking iron - Sprinkle a little salt on a piece of paper and run the hot iron over it to remove rough, sticky spots. Cleaning fish tanks - Rub the inside of fish tanks with salt to remove hard water deposits, then rinse well before returning the fish to the tank. Use only plain, not iodized, salt. |
Salt Uses & Tips: In the Kitchen Boiling Water - Salt added to water makes the water boil at a higher temperature, thus reducing cooking time (it does not make the water boil faster). Peeling eggs - Eggs boiled in salted water peel more easily. Poaching eggs - Poaching eggs over salted water helps set the egg whites. Testing egg freshness - Place the egg in a cup of water to which two teaspoonfuls of salt has been added. A fresh egg sinks; a doubter will float. Preventing browning - Apples, pears and potatoes dropped in cold, lightly salted water as they are peeled will retain their color. Shelling pecans - Soaking pecans in salt water for several hours before shelling will make nut meats easier to remove. Washing spinach - If spinach is washed in salted water, repeated cleanings will not be necessary. Preventing sugaring - A little salt added to cake icings prevents them from sugaring. Crisping salads - Salting salads immediately before serving will keep them crisp. Improving boiled potatoes - Boiled potatoes will be given a fine, mealy texture by sprinkling with salt after draining, then returning them to the pan and shaking them back and forth quickly to get rid of the excess moisture. Cleaning greasy pans - The greasiest iron pan will wash easily if you use a little salt in it and wipe with paper. Cleaning stained cups - Rubbing with salt will remove stubborn tea or coffee stains from cups. Cleaning ovens - Salt and cinnamon take the "burned food" odor away from ovens and stove burners. Sprinkle spills while oven and burners are still hot; when dry, remove the salted spots with a stiff brush or cloth. Cleaning refrigerators - Use salt and soda water to clean and sweeten the inside of your refrigerator. It won't scratch enamel either. Extinguishing grease fires - Salt tossed on a grease fire on the stove or in the oven will smother flames. Never use water; it will only spatter the burning grease. Improving coffee - A pinch of salt in coffee will enhance the flavor and remove the bitterness of over-cooked coffee. Improving poultry - To improve the flavor of poultry, rub the fowl inside and out with salt before roasting. Removing pinfeathers - To remove pinfeathers easily from a chicken, rub the chicken skin with salt first. Cleaning tarnished silverware - Rub tarnish with salt before washing. Cleaning copper pans - Remove stains on copper pans by salting area and scouring with a cloth soaked in vinegar. Cleaning coffee pots - Remove bitterness from percolators and other coffee pots by filling with water, adding four tablespoons of salt and percolating or boiling as usual. Removing onion odors from hands - Rub fingers with salt moistened with vinegar. "Sweetening" containers - Salt can "sweeten" and deodorize thermos bottles and jugs, decanters and other closed containers. Cleaning sink drains - Pour a strong salt brine down the kitchen sink drain regularly to eliminate odors and keep grease from building up. Brightening cutting boards - After washing them with soap and water, rub cutting boards with a damp cloth dipped in salt; the boards will be lighter and brighter. Fixing oversalted soups - If soup has been oversalted, cut up a raw potato or two and drop into the soup. The potato will absorb the salt. Cleaning dried-on egg - Salt not only makes eggs taste better, but it makes "eggy" dishes clean easier. Sprinkle salt on dishes right after breakfast; it makes them a whiz to clean when you have time. Preventing food from sticking - Rub a pancake griddle with a small bag of salt to prevent sticking and smoking. Sprinkle a little salt in the skillet before frying fish to prevent the fish from sticking. Sprinkle salt on washed skillets, waffle iron plates or griddles, heat in a warm oven, dust off salt; when they are next used, foods will not stick. Preventing mold - To prevent mold on cheese, wrap it in a cloth dampened with saltwater before refrigerating. Whipping cream and beating egg whites - By adding a pinch of salt, cream will whip better and egg whites will beat faster and higher. Keeping milk fresh - Adding a pinch of salt to milk will keep it fresh longer. Setting gelatin - To set gelatin salads and desserts quickly, place over ice that has been sprinkled with salt. Beside making food delicious, it's believed there are more than 14,000 uses for salt, and our grandmothers were probably familiar with most of them. A number of these uses were for simple things around the home before the advent of modern chemicals and cleaners. Many of these salt uses are still valid today and can be much cheaper and more environmentally-friendly than more sophisticated products. We make no guarantee about the results if you try any of these uses and tips, but there must be something to them since they have been handed down over the years in many households. Most of these salt uses have stood the test of time. The most familiar use of salt undoubtedly is in the kitchen and on the dining table. Salt accents the flavor of meat, brings out the individuality of vegetables, puts "oomph" into bland starches, deepens the flavor of delicate desserts, and develops the flavor of melons and certain other fruits. No other seasoning has yet been found that can satisfactorily take the place of salt. But, there are many other uses for salt around the home, as well. Salt is an excellent cleaning agent, either on its own or in combination with other substances. A solution of salt and turpentine restores the whiteness to yellowed enamel bathtubs and lavatories. A paste of salt and vinegar cleans tarnished brass or copper. A strong brine poured down the kitchen sink prevents grease from collecting and eliminates odors. Salt helps destroy moths and drives away ants. A dash of salt in laundry starch keeps the iron from sticking and gives linen and fine cottons a glossy, like-new finish. A thin paste of salt and salad oil removes white marks caused by hot dishes or water from wooden tables. A box of salt is also an important item in many bathrooms. In mild solutions, it makes an excellent mouthwash, throat gargle or eye-wash; it is an effective dentifrice; it is an effective antiseptic; and it can be extremely helpful as a massage element to improve skin complexion. It’s natural for those little toddler quirks to (sometimes) make you crazy. “It’s your toddler’s job to test your limits,” says Pediatric expert. Plus, they just don’t know better yet. Source: http://www.thelivefeeds.com/10-annoying-toddler-habits-and-how-to-deal/ 1. Nose-picking “Nose-picking is normal and natural, but it’s also socially unacceptable and a great way to spread germs,” says expert. Expect it to take some time for that “not okay” message to sink in; meanwhile, try not to dwell on it, redirect with lots of tissue offers and wash hands regularly to reduce the spread of germs. 2. Scribbling on everything If your toddler ruins something by coloring on it, your instinct may be to get irate. “We say ‘She should know better,’” says expert. “She may have been scolded just yesterday for scribbling, but that was a blue marker on the wall. In her mind, it’s a totally different story.” If you have a budding Picasso on your hands, you may have to go over the rules 11 jillion times before she truly grasps the parameters. Until then, your choices are closer supervision and keeping any tempting tools out of her reach. 3. Repetition “Reading the same book or singing the same song over and over is a critical part of early learning,” Jana explains. “This is how children pick up subtleties of language and learn to notice details, like rhythm or that the pictures go with the story.” We may get bored paging through The Very Hungry Caterpillar for the umpteenth time, but the point of reading or singing together is the shared experience, not the riveting plot or the catchy refrain. When he gets older, it’s okay to suggest a different book. But for now, try to suck it up and read it again. 4. Impatience “Attention span builds gradually,” expert says. “A three-year-old can wait until you finish a sentence to speak, but asking her to hold a thought for 30 minutes is unrealistic.” The next time she interrupts, try saying this: “I can see that you have something important to say, and I can’t wait to hear what it is, just as soon as I finish this conversation.” If you stop or drop what you’re doing every time your child demands your immediate attention, she’ll continue to believe everything revolves around her (and that won’t be fun when she’s a teenager). 5. Full-body tantrums “To refrain from having a tantrum takes impulse control, which is a learned skill and something that’s difficult for even four- and five-year-olds,” expert explains. Just as you wouldn’t get mad if your child didn’t master his ABCs overnight, you’ll need to cultivate patience with this skill too. Instead of having a tantrum of your own (tempting as it may be), try the sympathetic route: “You really wanted that, huh? You must be pretty disappointed that you can’t have it, and I understand that, but it’s not going to happen. Here’s something you can have....” It won’t be easy, but if you give in to a hissy fit to avoid a scene, you’ve just taught your child that this is an effective way to get what he wants. Not a good thing. 6. Whining Nearly all kids go through a whiny phase. If your tendency is to say something along the lines of, “Okay, fine. You can [fill in the blank],” you’re teaching her that whining is a great way to manipulate you. The response to master: “I’m sorry. I can’t understand you when you talk like that.” 7. Finicky eating After 18 months, it can take 10 to 15 exposures to a new food before a child green-lights it, expert explains. And don’t overlook the fact that no matter how many times she tries a certain food, she may never learn to love it. “Parents often forget to acknowledge likes and dislikes,” expert says. “Some things may grow on her, but a handful never will.” Bottom line: Try a different veggie if she’s refusing broccoli. 8. Overreacting If your toddler’s truck is missing, his sister took Cheerios off his plate or he dropped his sippy cup, to him it’s an urgent, critical concern. So try not to let his flipping out get to you. “You can watch a screaming child and feel bad and not irritated,” expert says. “It’s easier said than done, but it helps if you remember that he’s not being melodramatic to annoy you.” Lead by example and stay calm. 9. Biting Between 9 and 18 months, the act of biting is generally experimental. (“What happens when I do this?”) Biting that continues beyond that point, says expert, needs to be addressed. With older toddlers, look for triggers — hunger, fatigue, teething — and do your best to deal with those before he sinks his teeth into the nearest limb. If your child bites another child, the expert suggests handling it immediately, apologizing and assuring the other parent that you’re working to curb the behavior. “If you don’t, the other parent will assume that you don’t care or aren’t trying to teach proper behavior,” says expert, who adds that you probably won’t get the response you want (“Oh, no problem!”), but at least you’re showing concern. 10. Baring it all “It’s normal and tempting for a child to explore her body, and there’s no deeper, hidden meaning” behind taking her clothes off, says expert. To get her to stop stripping in public, expert recommends gently reminding her that “private parts are for private places” (and don’t be surprised if she trots off to her room for some self-exploration). Our bodies need a certain amount of sodium to survive, and one of the most common ways we get it is in salt. About 40% of what's in your table salt is sodium. Salt does more than just take that caramel cookie to the next level. Healthy levels of it in the body also help keep our blood pressure under control and ensure that our muscles and nerves function properly. Each person reacts to salt differently. But generally, physicians agree that if you want to control high blood pressure, you should limit your salt intake, and not doing so can be unhealthy. UPDATED - http://www.thelivefeeds.com/the-whatsapp-ban-has-been-lifted/ The two-day ban of WhatsApp in Brazil lasted just a few hours as the ruling was overturned by a higher court, according to The Financial Times. [irp] The ban was ordered after WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, failed to cooperate in an investigation in the country. Over 100 million people use the service in Brazil making the ban a big deal. "Thank you to everybody in Brazil for your support in getting WhatsApp back online," said Jan Koum, the founder of WhatsApp, in a post. "This is a victory for the Brazilian people, and we’re glad that your voices were heard loud and clear by people who represent them." Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also took to Facebook to thank "our community for helping resolve this." Telecommunication companies in Brazil were ordered to cut-off access to the messaging service for 48 hours starting yesterday morning. The ruling was then overturned at midday local time. Telegram, a rival messaging service, saw over 1.5 million account sign-ups during the outage. We will update the post when we hear back on latest update on this http://www.thelivefeeds.com/the-whatsapp-ban-has-been-lifted/ |
http://www.thelivefeeds.com/whatsapp-may-be-banned-in-nigeria-as-its-banned-in-brazil/ Brazilians awoke to a day without WhatApp Thursday after a judge ordered the popular messaging app blocked throughout the country for 48 hours. The reason for the order was murky because it arose from criminal proceedings in Sao Paulo state that are being kept under judicial secret. However, Mark Zuckerberg, who heads WhatsApp's parent company Facebook, indicated in a Facebook post that the case was related to the company's attempt to guard customers' data. In a statement, Sao Paulo's criminal court system said only that WhatsApp had been handed two prior judicial orders this year that the California-based company failed to heed. "Because even then the company did not heed the judicial decision, the public prosecutors' office requested the service be blocked," the court's statement read. The popularity of WhatsApp and other messaging apps has hurt cell phone operators, who have seen revenue from SMS messages plummet as consumers come to rely increasingly on free services like WhatsApp, which is estimated to have around 100 million users in Brazil. However, the union representing Brazil's cell phone service operators, SindiTelebrazil, denied in a statement the companies were the plaintiffs in the case. Zuckerberg called the blockage "a sad day for Brazil," adding that the company is working to get it reversed. "Until today, Brazil has been an ally in creating an open internet. Brazilians have always been among the most passionate in sharing their voice online," Zuckerberg's said in his post. "I am stunned that our efforts to protect people's data would result in such an extreme decision by a single judge to punish every person in Brazil who uses WhatsApp. " While WhatsApp users in Brazil are still able to open the app, their messages are not being sent. ...Can this also happen in Nigeria? http://www.thelivefeeds.com/country-support-manager-at-clinton-health-access-initiative-inc-abuja-clintonhealth/ Country Support Manager Job TypeFull Time QualificationBA/BSc/HND Experience4 years LocationAbuja Job FieldAdministration / Secretarial Type: Full Time Business Unit: Access Programs - Laboratory Services Additional Location Description Job Descriptions The Country Support Manager (CSM) will work with LST to ensure the rapid scale-up and effective management of high-quality diagnostics for high burden diseases, focusing primarily on diagnostics for patients with HIV and TB. The CSM will work with Ministries of Health and CHAI country teams across multiple focal countries, helping to optimize policies and processes, expand access to high quality diagnostics, ensure that countries have adopted best practices in planning and implementation of testing programs, and support forecasting and procurement of essential diagnostic products. The CSM will also provide support in the quantification and mapping of funding needs against available resources, helping the government to identify funding gaps and design interventions and scale up plans in consideration of current resources. Historically, the majority of diagnostic testing for HIV and TB has been conducted on conventional, laboratory-based technologies using sample transportation systems to expand access to testing to patients living in rural areas. However, access to these products is limited in many countries, and Ministries of Health require continued support to improve the efficiency of these technologies, expand their reach, and introduce new types of essential tests. In addition, several POC products for diagnosis, disease staging, and treatment monitoring have recently become available or are in development, with the potential to dramatically increase access to treatment, improve patient retention, and make healthcare systems more efficient. These technologies need to be integrated with existing conventional laboratory networks, with an appropriate balance between centralized and decentralized testing. The CSM will support countries in the implementation of both conventional, laboratory-based diagnostic products and new, innovative point-of-care (POC) products that bring diagnostics out of the laboratory and closer to the patient. In particular, The CSM will support countries in adopting the recently published WHO 2013 guidelines, including the use of viral load (VL) for monitoring patients on anti-retroviral therapy (ART), and developing strategies for scaling up testing programs, which include HIV diagnosis, CD4 testing, Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) and other opportunistic infections. In addition, the CSM will assist countries with the evaluation, adoption and uptake of new POC diagnostic products, which can reduce the burden of undergoing testing, and improve access to essential tests, particularly in rural areas. The CSM will also support LST in global negotiations with diagnostics manufacturers to lower prices, and with the development of new procurement strategies such as instrument rental deals to enable easier product switching. Finally, the CSM will help develop LST's market-shaping strategy for fostering competition in the global diagnostics market. In doing so, the CSM will develop strong relationships with various teams within CHAI, as well as Ministries of Health, diagnostics manufacturers, and other external partners in beneficiary countries. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding credentials, qualitative and quantitative analytical abilities, andCOMMUNICATION skills. The CSM must be able to function independently and flexibly and have a strong commitment to excellence. CHAI places great value on relevant personal qualities: resourcefulness, responsibility, tenacity, independence, energy, work ethic and emotional intelligence. This is a challenging but rewarding role, which will have direct and near-term impact on thousands of patients in need of life-saving health services. The role will be based in Nigeria with up to 50% travel in the region. Responsibilities Serve as a key advisor to Ministries of Health, CHAI country teams, and in-country and global partners on the expansion of access to diagnostic testing, and the adoption of new diagnostic products and their integration into existing laboratory networks Manage and coordinate diagnostics projects across multiple CHAI focal countries, with multiple work streams in each country Act as the focal point to manage the relationship between LST and CHAI country teams, including country team leadership Share best practices across country program to ensure knowledge is shared on the strategies, tools and experiences of all programs Support countries in the adoption of the recently published WHO 2013 guidelines Support countries in the development of strategic and implementation plans for HIV diagnosis in adults and children, including EID, CD4 and VL testing. Support the adoption of current and new HIV and TB diagnostic products and their integration into existing lab networks Assist Ministries of Health to build capacity to perform technical evaluations to drive regulatory approvals and ensure that new technologies perform accurately, conduct operational pilots to demonstrate the cost effectiveness and impact of new products on patient outcomes, and assist with analysis and writing of evaluation reports Develop and share deployment models and strategies for how to maximize the impact of existing and new diagnostic technologies Prepare impact analysis and build tools (forecasting, budgeting, work plans, etc.) to support countries' activities Assist Ministries of Health in the development of testing policies and national implementation plans, and the creation of operational systems to support the wide-scale implementation of new and existing diagnostic products, such as training, quality assurance, and data management Work with CHAI country teams, governments, and partners to identify funding for increased investment in new diagnostic products Design and implement monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems to measure the impact of new and existing technologies and assess progress against project goals Assist LST to manage global supplier relationships through product demand forecasting,MARKET analysis, sharing of market intelligence, and supporting price negotiations Provide remote and in-country technical assistance to CHAI country teams and governments in support of work streams related to diagnostics Qualifications Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's Degree plus 4-6 years work experience Excellent written and verbalCOMMUNICATION skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver compelling presentations and work on complex analyses A high Degree of self-confidence and the ability to work effectively at all levels of an organization - with fellow team members, and senior executives from Ministries of Health and partner organizations Strong analytical, problem solving, and quantitative skills, and a commitment to improvement and creative thinking with a capacity to critically assess prior achievements and develop stronger solutions and processes Ability to think strategically, handle ambiguity and work in a fast-paced, limited-structure, multicultural environment Ability to learn on the job quickly Detail-oriented with strong organization skills Ability to manage multiple work streams simultaneously and work independently Available for up to 50% travel High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word Pluses: Previous CHAI experience Policy and program management experience Experience supporting governments in implementing health systems in resource-limited settings Experience working in management consulting, investment banking, or similar environment Experience living or working abroad, particularly in developing countries Demonstrated success in training, coaching and supporting fellow team members and partners at all levels of an organization to build capacity in a sustainable manner Familiarity with global health issues, particularly HIV/AIDS and TB http://www.thelivefeeds.com/country-support-manager-at-clinton-health-access-initiative-inc-abuja-clintonhealth/ |
