noblezone: I am an optimist by default, but when it comes to the Nigerian question, my answer is that it will never work.

Nigeria is not "one", was never "one" and will never be "one".

Thanks a million times for you insight. We are busy chasing shadows! Nigeria's problem is not corruption: corruption is only a product of our differences so that instead of having patriots, we have regional, ethnic and religious gladiators.

There is nothing any of us can do about it, it does not matter what Jonathan does: whether he does the best or does the worst, some group will always hate him and some others will always love him just because of who he is and where he comes from.

Buhari is busy spreading his venom of violence, believe me, if that guy were to be an Igbo man, by now he should have been so condemned and also containted.

Now, dare to touch Buhari and you will see that he is not a "Nigerian" but a "Northerner".

Shame on the Brits.

GenBuhari: ^ please provided evidence to support these lies of ours

You are an id1ot if you think you can take up a user name like yours and come here to deceive people. You and your boko haram mentality. If the foolish Buhari had not truncated our democracy, would we not have stabilised by now? But the greedy fool wanted to be a life president. Tell me what was his road map back to democracy or you think we are kids here? Nonsense. You are the one that needs to show us evidence of what he did with PTF money because there are none. In the whole of Niger Delta, i cant find any. In the whole of south west and south east, i cant find any. There is not one school in the north that we can point to. No hospital, no industry. Only lies from you folks. The bigot didnt even care to campaign in the southeast and south south and he claims the election was rigged. Was he expecting people that dont know him to vote for him? Was he expecting people he didnt care about to vote for him? Does he think we see him as someone born to rule? He is nothing and means nothing to us. You fools think you can bully the rest of us, but i feel sorry for you because this is 2012. This is not 1960.

GenBuhari: The Buhari administration identified indiscipline as the bane of the nation's ills and therefore decided to fight it in all its ramifications. Hence the pre-occupation of the regime was the launching of the different phases of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) which has become a household word in may Nigerian homes. There were five phases of WAI, namely:-

a. Queuing (March 20, 1984)

b. Work Ethics (May 1, 1984)

c. Nationalism and Patriotism (August 21, 1984)

d. Anti-Corruption and Economic Sabotage (May 14, 1985)

e. Environmental Sanitation (July 29, 1985).

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-693700.64.html

Buhari is the sole reason we are in this mess today. He truncated a democracy that was going thru the normal teething problems and took us back to military rule that was the problem from the beginning. The only reason was that he wanted to institute sharia. He had no single plan for Nigeria for the 20months he ruled. I was in school then so i can remember very well. Unlike some of you kids come and post here, we know who he was and still is. War against indiscipling is not planning for a country. When we were kids, Nigeria was not as corrupt as it is today. The combination of Buhari, IBB and Abacha established corruption. Buhari never took any one to court and jailed any one for corruption. He only arrested those he didnt like. Ambrose Alli was jailed and he later fell ill and died but till today, no proof of corruption has been brought against him. His family has no loot from corruption. Yet some of you come here to say Buhari fought corruption. Buhari only wanted to implement a Northern agenda. That is, to dominate Nigeria and eastblish sharia rule. He was a corrupt man right from his spell as petroleum minister under OBJ's first regime and when he was PTF chairman. As minister of Petroleum, he presided over one of the worst looting of Nigeria then. As PTF chairman, He mismanaged over 100billion naira (in the 90s, you know what that is worth) and till date, there is no single project in the whole of southern Nigeria you can point to and say it was built with PTF money. All you see Buhari supporters say is that he did a lot of projects, but they cannot point to any such project.

I pity the few southerners that allow this bigot to confused and deceive them into believing he cares for them. What did Buhari do for Niger Delta? What did he even do for his fellow Northerners? Did he build any school? Hospital? Industry? Please tell me or forever shut up and stop praise singing the fool.

Wily+Wily:
But immediately Awolowo became the Finance Minister, Nigeria became to him the only indivisible nation ordained by God.
That small short man conspired with his Yoruba kinsmen and unleashed the worst looting Spree of our National Coffers.

It is all greed bro. Nothing but greed. We are still deceiving ourselves till today. Our problem is not corruption but what these men said many years ago. But unfortunately, their personal greed took over when it was time to separate. The south is completely different from the North in terms of ideology, sociology, mindset and religion, yet we say we are one.

Honestly, I am becoming less interested in posting in some of these threads because people like Dayokano and Demdem are very very very very childish. Discussing with them in a thread is demeaning and not good for one's mind. It is like arguing with toddlers just that toddlers at least dont try to pretend they know. These ones are actually more like retards. Unintelligent. Uncultured. Unschooled and proud of their stupidity. They can never be rich in their lives because they celebrate backwardness. It is pathetic. Total jackasses!
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Vacancy For Paid Forum Moderator With Spam Management Focus by dmainboss: 3:48am On Jun 08, 2012
@Seun

I am interested in the job and here's my solution:

First the manual way: I will setup a report address or similar (if that doesn't already exist) where users can report spam posts from any section. I will monitor these reports and take appropriate action based on what Nairaland considers as spam. I will do this routine say like every hour or more for all threads with priority given to front page threads.

Based on the above, I will monitor the user names and possibly IPs of offenders and keep a list of such and use that to prioritize future spam considerations. E.g. By keeping the number of times a user has been reported by other users and the number of times a user has been banned, those with higher ban rates can appear in a special cases list. This list can facilitate fast monitoring and filtering of spam.

Next is the automated way: This will require some programming and I would go about it as a project within a specific time frame. I did a spam filter for a cybercafe timer/proxy some years back, so I have real experience with that. I can give more details of that privately.
I will, for example, develop a filter script that will study patterns of spamming and use those patterns to filter the posts and suggest possible spam. These posts can then be reviewed and checked for spam. The script will also be used to do a delayed posts condition for known spammers. With that I mean a situation where a known or suspected spammer's post is delayed for say 10mins or more before it appears on the thread. I have seen this used in many forums, especially those of media organisations. But in this case, the posts will be delayed while a notification is sent to the admin, i.e. me, for consideration and necessary action. This will only apply to "known or suspected spammers" or to posts that are highly suspicious.

These are a few suggestions on how I will handle the spam issue if I get the job.

Regards

And please don't tell me it was love. It is what the bible calls the pride of life. The modern drive for fame and celebrity life is ruining many lives. And many of us Nigerians share in the guilt because we help them peddle their lies and fake wealth. Imagine people coming on here to tell us PSquare bought a private jet the other day. Most of these so called celebrities are broke ass niggas and the @op story shows that's how they are able to look good and make people believe they have money! kafero:

My Brother do you honestly think Google can fight three monster ( Facebook, Microsoft and Apple ) at the same time even with $190B war chest and survive?

Please help me here. Which monsters? Can't see any around.

Facebook will die a natural death like yahoo except they perform some kind of magic and reinvent themselves. They are standing on a faulty leg. What they are selling aint got long term value and is too dependent on the web page mobel which isn't the future. On mobile, facebook is just another app. Their real threat is twitter, linkedin, foursquare and even chat clients like whatsapp.

Microsoft? Dead on arrival, me thinks. With their bloated ware, they've got little chance of toppling anyone. Their main strong point was the office productivity suite and Google just pulled the rug from under their feet there. Quick office with over 300million users is a masterstroke. And without the office leverage, Microsoft has no chance. Not even Nokia can save them. They need a serious miracle here.

Apple is the only thing close to a monster here but I still can't give them a monster status because they are still way behind is terms of the services and connectivity platform. They are rock solid on the mobile platform though and thats the future. But they need to do a little bit more. Android has several advantages over them including price and free apps. But most importantly, people often forget the real strength of Google: the fact they have little or no competition in search and web data control. This is still the key. Even when I use Apple, Microsoft and facebook, I search with Google and run my website analytics with Google. My email is also Gmail. Now am going to be doing my work with Google Quickoffice and saving my work on Google Docs (Google drive) then when am done, I go watch Google youtube which is virtually embedded on every website. Then there is adsence and add words. Pwew!

Business / Google Buys Quickoffice In Preemptive Microsoft Strike by dmainboss: 9:32am On Jun 06, 2012
In a move that could be designed to outflank Microsoft in the office productivity app market, Google announced Tuesday it had acquired Quickoffice, a mobile app that allows users to work on Microsoft Office documents on iOS and Android systems.

Details of the deal were not made public by the companies.

"Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device," Google Engineering Director Alan Warren explained in a company blog. "Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we'll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite."

Quickoffice Co-Founder and CEO Alan Masarek declared the acquisition would allow his company to open a new chapter in its development. "By combining the magic of Google's intuitive solutions with Quickoffice's powerful products, our shared vision for anytime, anywhere productivity can only grow," he said in a statement.

The timing of the Quickoffice acquisition is interesting, coming as buzz continues to build about a version of Microsoft Office for the iOS, Android and Windows based tablets. That version of Office, though, isn't expected until November, which gives Google some lead time to enhance Quickoffice's market position, which is already a solid one.

The notion that Microsoft will be introducing Office for non-Windows tablets later this year has its skeptics, but this move by Google appears to strengthen the case of those who argue that a cross-platform version of Office is inevitable. As Tony Bradley argued earlier this month: "If users can’t get a true Office experience, they may just abandon the productivity suite altogether and seek out Web-based options like Google Docs."

How much more enticing would such a move be if Google can supplement the Web experience of its Docs product with a strong mobile offering like Quickoffice?

Actually, I would have suggested bringing in very strict external invigilators to conduct, mark and release their next exams. Half the school will be on their way back home after that. Lol

I like facebook but honestly I think they will die a natural death except they somehow pull out a rabbit from the hat. The big difference between google and facebook is vision. Google can see the future very clearly, facebook cannot. Facebook is trying to sell hype.

Mobile devices and platforms are the future. Facebook is conceptualized around web pages, google is conceptualized around providing services. In the future of mobile devices, what will be important will be services, not web pages. In that future, facebook will end up as one more app on your phone or device. It will not even stand out. That's why twitter is a smarter alternative. In that future, your fancy facebook page will not matter much. What will matter will be the content you provide and the value you add. Right now on my android, I access CNN and BBC on their respective apps, not from a browser. That's the future bro and Google knows. Facebook is getting a wind of it, that's why they are planning to do a facebook phone but I think they might have come to the party a bit late.

Phones / Re: Android Vs Symbian Phones, Which Is Better? by dmainboss: 5:04pm On Jun 01, 2012
@Jedisco, you went online and posted a link from nokiapoweruser.com. What would you expect them to say. If you are going to do a review, always post reviews from neutral sites or users.

jedisco:

The fact is that Nokias plan to move to windows was based on the poor reception for their early S^3 OS versions. And the fact is that those versions were shitty.
This has all changed with the coming of belle and especially the FP1 update.

The major problem with symbian now is the bad press its got cos of previous versions but the current Belle FP1 measures up to any other OS out there.

And from current indications, it seems Nokia will back track against their earlier statement cos their current windows phones are doing poorly.
Also Nokia is still pushing out and announcing more updates for symbian. Most of the Nokia news around bothers on their symbian devices.
They have also decided to make more Meego OS devices which was previously thought to be closed.
So it seems they may not close symbian in 2016 again. Even if they do, they would have to beef up the Windows OS with some symbian stuff but from current indications (like the Microsoft apps update for belle) it looks like the reverse is the case

And lastly what OS do you think the current Nokia flagship device (808 pureview) runs?

I am happy you were a bit fair here. Though you embellished it a little. But lets take a good look at your argument:

Nokia was the undisputed market leader for mobile phones for a long time, but they had very poor vision of the future. Even when the PalmOS was released back in 2004/2005, Nokia still didnt see the handwriting on the wall. They concentrated on low and middle tier phones and couldnt see the Internet was driving the world into a whole new horizon. At this time Google had a clear vision of the future and started the Google summer camps. It was like a joke but today the results are quite telling.

When Nokia wanted to move away from Symbian, they had 3 options. one was to use Android. second one was to use Windows 7 mobile and the third was to develop a whole new operating system. Actually their first choice was to use Android. But according to the CEO of Nokia, their biggest fear was that they will loose a market edge because they would loose their uniqueness. They needed to stand out and they concluded they wont be able to achieve that with Android. So they opted for the next best option which was Windows Mobile 7. Their argument was that W7 had no main partner who was aggressively pushing stuff on that platform so they stood the chance of becoming that major unique partner. Dont forget that HTC, Samsung and most other companies, except Motorolla still produce W7 phones. But their really great phones run Android.

The choice of W7 for Nokia phones elicited a lot of critisms because of what has happened to companies like PalmOS. The truth is Windows mobile looks like an expensive experiment that was always going to fail. Now Nokia is trying something of their own with the Belle. The first snag they are going to have is that the belle is an Android wannabe. The Belle is like someone trying so hard to be like the Android and the problem with that is no matter how much they try, it will always look like an imitation. Multiple Desktops, Navigation bar, Notification bar, etc are basic Android stuff and only makes the Belle look like a copy. There is no new innovation in the Belle. And dont forget that Android has the biggest support and development community of them all. Currently even bigger than the iOS.

On another scale, the Google platform is what makes Android a real monster. Mobile phones have moved away from just being devices for making phones calls and sms and email but have become the ultimate communication platform and the next generation PC. That is where you cannot compare a Symbian to an Android. Many of the platforms and services that Nokia itself is trying to use are largely driven or influenced by Google. So how can Nokia be more Google than Google. Gmail, Maps, GDocs, Play, Youtube, G+, Analytics, Google Search, Earth, translate, blogger, etc are all services by Google and most of these are native to Android. So you cannot beat Android to it. Until Nokia can build their own set of services or seamlessly integrate available services, they will always be a step behind. I know they are working on some apps and services but you have to realise that everyone is building for the Android platform right now. Even Nokia themselves are now trying to port some of their apps and services to Android. That alone is food for thought.

Truth is after all said and done, Nokia will eventually end up using Android or they might fade away like the PalmOS or will go bankrupt and bought by Microsoft.

^^^The 2 undisputed best phones in the world right now are the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3. It has already trounced the IPhone 4. Symbian is a no no in that arena. It is not even mentioned in the same breath.

The point is not for you to change over to android. The point is you shouldn't try to compare. Just enjoy your Nokia but don't try to compare because you will fall flat on your face. The S3 and One X can currently hold up to 128GB storage and all come with built in FM radio and HD cameras that the best Nokia can't match for at least another year. Not to talk of stuff like eye tracking technology that controls your phone brightness depending on if you are looking at it or not.USB stick has been available since the S2. That is over a year ago.

Isn't it funny that it is only in Nigeria you see people comparing BB and Symbian to Android or IPhone? The Oyibos that make it don't compare them and the stastistics are there to see. Nokia and RIM are both making losses and have a doubtful future and here we are on NL comparing them to their seniors. Very funny.

5. Enough softwares at ovi store(although not as much as android).
6 & 7. Enough pc remote softwares at ovi store like kinoni desktop remote, etc.
8. Yes! My phone contacts are synced with my fb and twitter accounts(cos those are d only two i av).
9. Yes! E.g. swype.
10. Yes!
11. OS upgrade? As easy as pressing *#0000#.
12. Yes! Even netqin does that.
13. Oh! Yours is five? Ours is six!
14. File Transfer Protocols? Enough of them!
15. Dont knw much about SQLite.
16. Yes! U can tweak it anyhow. Go to 'nokia belle is here' and see 4 urself.
17. Yes! Enough photo editing apps.
18. Lots of music mixin apps.
19. Documents, presentations, spreadsheets? Yes! Bt not pdf and html.
20. Wtf is joomla?

Now, can u navigate on ur android without connecting to d internet? I mean free-4-a-lifetime navigation? I wont argue software with u because android obviously has more than belle(and it's because android is an open source os and only nokia uses belle) but hardware, oga no try am. Can u compare d best android fone's camera wit n8's camera nt to talk of 808 pureview? Can u play music from ur android via ur local radio? Can u connect ur flash to ur android device? And let's nt 4get, enough nokia care outlets in 9ja.

Lol. Was busy for a while, came back and saw all these replies. You guys aint giving up. Lol. That's fine wit me. But let me put it straight. Am not just a user, am a developer too. I develop for Symbian, Blackberry and Android. So I have first hand info. Nokia has done very well in the phone business and they were number one for years. But that's old school now and even Nokia themselves have admitted it.

My first Samsung Galaxy S captivate which was released in 2010 came with a 1GB memory and 16GB internal storage. That is 2 years ago. So if you wanna compare, start from there and compare with 2010 symbian release. Don't even go near the S2 or S3. They will blow you away.

Switch over to the HTC. Wow! Where do I start? Don't forget earlier HTCs all ran windows mobile which is even better than Symbian. So for them to switch to Android speaks volumes. Then we move over to the Motorolla babies. This is like the last busstop. A droid 3 is a super machine. A master piece. A sexy phone. These all come with super cameras some up to 16 mega pixels. I don't want to bother listing the features because it will make the Nokias look like toys. Then you step over to the tabs. Wow! Wow! Wow!

When you are a developer like me, you loose inspiration developing for the Symbian and Blackberry because they are way behind. The APIs that are available for you to talk to web services and the phone functionality, for the Android, is awesome. BB is the worst of them. It is just a glorified Java phone. The only thing I like about a BB is its data compression. The rest is crap.

The android graphic engine is light years ahead of the Symbian. Android has a standard database. You can access android ROM, you can customise system parameters, settings and batch processing just like you do on windows. And please don't compare android hotspot with your yeye Symbian app. Android has hotspot built into the OS. It is a simple setting you turn on and you are done. When you use apps like Titanium backup and ROM manager, you begin to understand the power of Android. I even have a console like windows command prompt from where I can run commands and do anything.

Do you know when you develope android apps, you can test directly on your phone by turning om USB debugging? Symbian or BB can't match that in the next 2 years.

You can install apps to your android phone while you are working on your desktop or laptop. Just open Google play, search for the app and click install. Google play will recognise your phone, and automatically trigger your phone to download the app and install it without your intervention. You can send as many apps as you like. They will all install one after the other.

Please don't compare an elephant with an antelope. Android is a monster.

Yes, you absolutely must install Droidwall! You cannot stop all Android services manually. Where on earth did you get that from? Even when you shut down background services, all apps, widgets and services with root permission or with system designate will still use data services. I told you before, Google is free! Use it man!

And just to add, 3G and the Screen are about the biggest battery drainers opn Android so you must shut 3G when not in use and use automatic screen brightness feature. Also set your screen time out to something low. I have these buttons configured on my navigation bar and drop down bar so I have quick access to them. You gat to explore your droid man. You are disgracing that machine in your hand! Gosh!

An note that your phone must be rooted to be able to install Droidwall and new ROMs. Many network locked phones are not rooted.

Also when you browse, the amount of data consumed is dependent on the browser settings like image quality, javascript support, compression algoritm and offline setting. You can simply tweek those from your browser to manage your data. Most Nokia phones comes optimised to use less data. Android is normally set to give you an exciting browsing experience with high end graphics and lot more. So you have to set it to consume less.

The point is, comparing and Android phone to a symbian phone is like comparing a laptop to a symbian phone. An Android phone is a "mini laptop". You can't expect a laptop battery to run for 2 days, can you?

Bro the only thing you said that made sense is the replacement of 1500AH battery with a 3500AH. Every other thing you said is trash. When I say that Android has a poor battery life it means that when compared to Nokia, it falls behind. That doesn't mean I said all the smartphones have a long battery life except Android.
Concerning the data issue, didn't you read where I mentioned that I monitor every services using my data bundle? Meaning that even when I stop every service except my browser, I still notice higher data consumption when I only bowse. Your reply to my post was just trash.

Why do you choose to stay in your ignorance like an average Nigerian? Did you actually read my post?

With Droidwall installed, no data goes out or comes in except you allow it. That means I can use a 1mb data for one day if I choose to. In fact, on monday when my subscription expired, I subscribed for 10mb, N100 Airtel bundle and used it all day for my emails and whatsapp chat and even nairaland. It was the next day I did my 1 month sub. All I needed to do was enable only Gmail, whatapp and chrome on my Droidwall and I was ok.

And the more the apps ans services running on your droid, the less battery time you have. I used to get about 4 hours of heavy use on my 1500mAH, but after tweaking my setup, I started gettin a little over a full day of heavy use. You gat to open your mind bro and learn. Drop the defensive posture and just learn. Google is free.

Sometimes Nigerians tend to prove they know so much.

dmainboss:

No offence intended bro but I find posts like this a little ignorant. All smart phones generally have a poor battery life because they are practically little computers. What you need do is get a replacement battery with bigger capacity i.e. Samsung phones normally come with a 1500mAH but you can get a 3500mAH replacement battery and get like 2 extra days of power(depending on your phone use)

Like computers, smart phones have lots or services running in the background so you have to learn to manage that. You can get taskmanagers and killers from google play/app market. IPhones also have taskmanagers. Making sure only necessary apps are running can save a lot of battery power for you.

Also, Android comes with a lot of customizable ROM. Some of these ROMs come with better battery life. I use a Dark Night ROM on my Samsung Captivate running Ice Cream Sandwich and its beatiful, fast and has good battery life. This is where Android leaves everyone else dead on their tracks.

On data consumption, again, it is ignorant to say Android consumes too much data. It consumes much data because don't know what to do. It is just like installing windows and activating automatic update and later complaining that your laptop is consuming to much Internet data. Just simply turn off automatic sync and background data services on your Android and you are good to go. Or better still, get Droidwall or similar app and just allow only necessary apps to use Internet service by adding them to your white list. Very simple and cute. Sometimes, it pays to ask questions so you don't look bad on forums like these.

Please don't insult an Android phone by comparing it with a symbian phone. It is just absurd. My Android phone can even check my BP, Heart beat and surrounding temperature. Only an IPhone can match that.

Things you can do with and Android phone:

1. Check your BP
2. Check your heart beat rate
3. Check your environment temperature
4. Run a wifi hotspot at home or the office or just connect with usb and use it as your Internet modem. It is a far better modem than the one provided by your phone company
5. Run all kind of softwares from car diagnostics to how to bake a cake to how to make furniture for your home, etc
6. Install apps to your phone from your desktop or laptop, whereever your phone is.
7. Synchronise your browser on your laptop or desktop to your phone remotely. This is especially cool when using Google Chrome for Android
8. Synchronise your GMail, Yahoo, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Myspace contacts, calenders, schedules, content seamlessly. With full OS support.
9. Install various kinds of keyboards depending on your choice.
10. Use dropbox and other cloud services to store your content seamlessly
11. Upgrade your OS easily anytime a new OS version comes out. From ICS 4.0, OTA OS update is now a standard feature for all phones
12. Backup all your software settings and restore easily after a system wipe, upgrade, flashing or whatever. You can backup to Internal or external SD card
13. Customize your desktop(five desktops), buttons, menus and virtually all your user interface in countless ways. I actually have a features in Dark Night ROM that allows me to place app icons in a grouped desktop foldes. Simply awesome!
14. Run ftp apps that you can use to manage you website just like from your laptop.
15. Android comes with SQLlite database inbuilt. That's power right there.
16. Customize your startup screen like on a normal PC. You can even change the startup picture to your own personal picture.
17. Edit your pictures easily and wonderfully
18. Run a DJ scratch machine. Simply cool.
19. Create documents, presentation, spreadsheet, PDF, HTML/PHP pages, etc
20. Manage your joomla site straight from and app on your phone without opening a browser.
