Six Atlanta police officers have been charged after a dramatic video showed authorities pulling two young people from a car during protests over the death of George Floyd, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard announced the charges during a news conference.
“I feel a little safer now that these monsters are off the street and no longer able to terrorize anyone else,” said Messiah Young, the man who was dragged from the vehicle.

The Saturday night incident first gained attention from video online and on local news.
Five of the officers are charged with aggravated assault, in addition to other charges.
Two of the officers, Investigator Ivory Streeter and Investigator Mark Gardner, were fired earlier this week.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said the woman, Taniyah Pilgrim, was released without charges. She said Young, was released, too, and she’s ordering the charges against him dropped. She didn’t specify what charges he faced. A police report says Young was charged with attempting to elude police and driving with a suspended license.

Dramatic body camera video that police released Sunday night shows police taking another young man into custody in a downtown street alongside a line of stopped cars. The man is pleading with police to let him go, saying he didn’t do anything.
Young, sitting in the driver’s seat of a car stopped in the street holds up his phone, appearing to shoot video as an officer approaches and pulls the driver’s side door open. Young pulls the door shut and says repeatedly, “I’m not dying today.” He urges the officers to release the other man and let him get in the car as the dark sedan advances a bit.
The car gets stuck in traffic and officers run up to both sides of the car shouting orders. An officer uses a stun gun on Pilgrim as she’s trying to get out of the car and then officers pull her from the vehicle.
Another officer yells at Young to put the car in park and open the window. An officer repeatedly hits the driver’s side window with a baton, and another officer finally manages to break it.

As the glass shatters, an officer uses a stun gun on Young and officers pull him from the car as officers shout, “Get your hand out of your pockets,” and, “He got a gun. He got a gun. He got a gun.” Once he’s out of the car and on the ground, officers zip tie Young’s hands behind his back and lead him away

Crime / George Floyd: Mercedes Cars Damaged As Rioters Vandalise Showroom (video) by DMPaulSr: 1:48pm On Jun 01, 2020
Several vehicles inside a Mercedes-Benz showroom in California's Oakland were vandalised and reportedly damaged when rioters broke in during clashes over the death of an unarmed American man of African origin at the hands of police in Minneapolis.

Demonstrations have spread to several cities in the United States after a cop was caught on tape with his knee on the neck of a man later identified as George Floyd. Floyd was pinned down by Derek Chauvin who has since been removed from the police force and has been charged with murder. Floyd had been arrested for allegedly using counterfeit money at a store to buy cigarettes on Monday evening. He could not be revived after being put into an ambulance.

The anger over the incident has led to massive protests in several cities - from New York to Atlanta and beyond. Reports of vandalism and rioting have emerged as well and in one such incident, people broke into a Mercedes showroom in Oakland and left many of the vehicles here damaged. CBS San Francisco reported that the dealership was also ransacked and was left in a sorry state due to a fire.
A video of rioters breaking into the dealership also shows some of them climbing on to the Mercedes cars and kicking the windshields violently. A few of them also end up jumping on these vehicles.
US president Donald Trump himself waded fuel to the fire with a tweet. "These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!"

Imagine this guy was caught on camera stealing medicine or food for his children and how much sympathy that would bring him. But no, alcohol is his problem. And he didn't even steal one, he lined his pockets and filled his hands and probably his bag with more. Greed is his problem.

This is the kind of outcome we need to avoid, how did he get to this position? Are the stereotypes of dead-beat African American fathers real? African Americans have a serious problem on their hands and the few trying to better themselves are seen as threats to white hegemony which is why they are killed. What can the church do to help? What can the successful African Americans do to help? Who looks after these ones wasting their lives?
And he looks homeless. Instead of stealing something valuable to sell...

St. Paul police responded to looting at the Midway Target Thursday, following a night of protests, fires and damage across the river in Minneapolis.
Police say a crowd of 50-60 people rushed the University Avenue store at around 11:30 a.m. People were reported running into the store, grabbing items and running without paying, police said.

Officers attempted to stop the looting "and the would-be thieves dropped the stolen merchandise and fled on foot," said a statement from police spokesman Steve Linders.
While officers were responding to the looting, a fight broke out between a person in a vehicle and someone on foot. Police say the person in the car attempted to run over the pedestrian but missed and crashed into another vehicle.
Linders says a crowd began gathering at a shoe store across the street, and officers remain on the scene to protect property in the area. Social media posts report looting and disruptive behavior at other locations.
Some people threw carts and glass bottles at police.

Protesters have clashed with police in the US following the death of an unarmed black man, who pleaded he could not breathe as a white officer kneeled on his neck during an arrest.
Footage of the restraint was shared widely online after a bystander filmed the policeman pinning the shirtless suspect, George Floyd, to the ground in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Four officers involved in the arrest have since been fired, with the city's mayor Jacob Frey saying: "This is the right call."
The man could be heard saying he couldn't breathe as he was pinned to the ground

The man could be heard saying he couldn't breathe as he was pinned to the ground

Demonstrators took to the streets where Mr Floyd died, with some chanting and carrying banners that read "I can't breathe", as they marched towards a police station, where windows and a patrol car were damaged and graffiti was sprayed on the building.
A line of riot police eventually confronted them, firing tear gas and projectiles, which protesters kicked back towards them.
Some of the demonstrators used shopping trolleys to make a barricade at a nearby supermarket, and tense scuffles continued late into the evening.
The FBI and state agents are investigating after the death on Monday night.

Police chief Medaria Arradondo said his department would conduct a full internal investigation, and prosecutors will decide whether to file criminal charges against the officers involved.
The police officer was seen kneeling on the suspect
Officers had been called at about 8pm local time (2am UK time) to a report of forgery at a business, police spokesman John Elder said.
Police found Mr Floyd, believed to be in his 40s, matching the suspect's description in his car.

Mr Elder said in a statement: "He was ordered to step out from his car. After he got out, he physically resisted officers.
"Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress."
Police clashed with protesters following George Floyd's death
Police said Mr Floyd was taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Centre where he died a short time later.

The names of the fired officers have not been released.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has joined the FBI in its investigation.
All body camera footage has been turned over to the BCA, which investigates most police shootings and in-custody deaths.
The suspect died in hospital shortly after his arrest
Nekima Levy-Armstrong, a prominent local activist, said watching the footage that was shared on social media made her "sick to her stomach".
She told the Star Tribune in Minnesota: "Whatever the man may have done should not have ended in a death sentence.
"What started as an alleged economic incident once again turned deadly for a black man."

Ms Levy-Armstrong said it reminded her of the case of Eric Garner, an unarmed New York man who died after he was placed in a chokehold by police in 2014.

He had pleaded for his life and said he could not breathe during the incident.

A grand jury later decided against indicting the officers involved, sparking protests around the country.

Mr Frey has urged those who might protest to take precautions and practice social distancing amid the COVID-19 outbreak on Tuesday.

Police in Minneapolis have come under scrutiny in recent years for deadly run-ins with citizens.

Meanwhile, a white woman, Justine Rusczcyk Damond, died in 2017 when she was shot in the stomach by a Minneapolis officer responding to her 911 call.

That officer, who is black, was convicted of manslaughter and murder and is serving a 12-year prison sentence.

Crime / Black Man Dies During Arrest After White Cop Kneels On His Neck (pix, Video) by DMPaulSr: 7:29pm On May 26, 2020
The FBI will investigate the death of a black man in the US state of Minnesota after a video emerged showing a policeman kneeling on his neck.

In the footage, the man, believed to be in his 40s, is heard groaning and repeatedly saying "I can't breathe" to the white officer.

The Minneapolis Police Department said it was responding to a reported crime.

The incident echoed that of Eric Garner, a black man who died being arrested in 2014.

Garner was placed in a chokehold and uttering the words "I can't breathe" nearly a dozen times.

The phrase became a rallying cry for activists protesting alleged police brutality against people of colour in the US.

The Minnesota Police admitted that the man in the footage filmed on Monday died after a "medical incident" in a "police interaction".

He was suspected of committing a forgery, meaning to have been fraudulently altering or making a false reproduction of a product.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described the incident as "completely and utterly messed up".

"I believe what I saw and what I saw is wrong on every level," Mr Frey said. "Being black in America should not be a death sentence."

New York police officer in 'I can't breathe' death fired
It is the latest accusation of US police brutality against African Americans. Recent high-profile cases include an officer in Maryland who fatally shot a man inside a patrol car .

The incident in Minneapolis on Monday evening began after officers located the man in his car, police said in a statement . They were told the man, who has not been identified, was "sitting on top of a blue car and appeared to be under the influence".

After being ordered to step away from the vehicle, the man physically resisted officers, according to police. "Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress," the statement added.

In the 10-minute video filmed by a witness, the man is kept on the ground by the officer and, at one point, says: "Don't kill me".

Witnesses urged the officer to take his knee off the man's neck, noting that he was not moving. One says, "His nose is bleeding", while another pleads, "Get off his neck."

The man then appears motionless before he is put on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

Police said no weapons were used during the incident and that body camera footage had been handed to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the case. Two of the officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave.

After the video emerged, police said in a statement: "As additional information has been made available, it has been determined that the Federal Bureau of Investigations will be a part of this investigation."

Speaking to US media on Tuesday, Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said the force's policies "regarding placing someone under control" will be reviewed as part of the probe.

The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar - reportedly shortlisted as Joe Biden's running mate - issued a statement calling for a "complete and thorough outside investigation."

"Justice must be served for this man and his family, justice must be served for our community, justice must be served for our country," she said.

"I can't breathe" became a national rallying cry against police brutality in the US after the July 2014 death of Eric Garner.

Garner, an unarmed black man, uttered the phrase 11 times after being detained by police on suspicion of illegally selling loose cigarettes. They were the final words of the 43-year-old, who died after a police officer placed him in a chokehold.

A city medical examiner ruled the chokehold contributed to Garner's death. The New York City police officer involved in Garner's deadly arrest was fired from the police force more than five years later, in August 2019.
