VisaOfficer: I'm going to quote a response I posted a couple of weeks ago: This is an area where Nigerian law and U.S. law don't dovetail neatly. Traditional marriages in Nigeria do count as marriages and make people ineligible for K visas -- and if your fiance gives the bride price, that's a marriage under customary law. But because such marriages are often undocumented, the Nigerian spouse can't benefit from the IR1 or CR1 petition, because there's no piece of paper to submit to NVC. So people who have had traditional or customary marriages, but not a registry or religious marriage*, are stuck, unable to get either a fiance or a spouse visa.

The obvious solution is to go ahead and do the registry marriage in Nigeria, then apply for a spouse petition. The only reason that takes longer than a fiance petition is that you can file a fiance petition any time, but you can't file a spouse petition until after the marriage.

We do like to hear that people have met each other's parents... but if we know you've had an introduction ceremony, we'll be very curious about whether it was actually a traditional marriage, or just an introduction. Whatever the case, tell the truth, and you'll end up with the visa you qualify for.

(* Religious marriages are recognized for spouse petitions if there's a certificate from an established religious institution involved.)

Sorry MA not trying to flog this issue but to have a clear view. Scenerio* a lady LPR travelled on lottery single coss she was but has done family introduction yrs even b4 winning just because the parents request to know d immidiate relative of her boyfriend incase of anything and to know who d family are it was just a living room affair with fotos no dowry was paid. Fastward now she is coming back for proper wedding to file for d guy, at interview won't it be taken as she got her visa by deception if they decide to submit d foto of d family knowing each other meeting as part of prove that d relationship as been for long and the VO will say she lied about her status being single when she got d visa. Guys congratulations to every one may d joy never stop just to chip in a word or advice I will recommend people travel light ie just go by d 23kg of d airline especially for people that are still going to put up with strangers it will not be wise to fill up dia homes with ur luggage and at d end of d day u won't use all d cloths u have dia and moreover America is about moving around u never can tell when next u are moving and to what part. Cloths don't get dirty easily and better if we have money and buy things as need arise coss u will still need a lot of it to do almost everything. Reasonable number of medication is ok but not d quantity as if one is going to open a store to sell . Please do remember ur agbo jedi too(herbs tree back) u will sure need it I noticed no one talks about dis. D most importantly don't let us breakrules no driving if u are not suppose to we don't need to start with a criminal record. It will be lonely some times so don't forget home communicate bak with which ever way possible. Its d dawn of a new day enjoy d new status.

Well as u know already its only done in Abuja but what I dont know is why its very difficult to be done officially this give way to officials to rake in 100k into dia pockets. I cant introduce anybody but go to immigration office where ever u are and talk to a staff they will tell you wat to do. But personal experience we paid over 100k per person just to add a name to d family name and make it compound name.

This not change of name this is just rearanging. Now the LPR need to file in application and they notice d arangement of names. Or, you two can spend some actual time together, get to know each other, meet each other's families, talk about your plans and goals and dreams, find out if you're really compatible, think things over very well, find out what it's like to have a serious argument and whether you can patch things up afterward, learn if you really really love each other, and after long discussion and some meaningful time spent in each other's company, you could get married. Then she could file the I-130 petition for a spouse.

Just bring whatever evidence you can. Every relationship is different, so I can't tell you exactly what to bring. Anyway. we look at the paper evidence as a secondary source of information; we're much more interested in what the applicant has to say about the relationship, whether it makes sense, whether the applicant can reasonably answer simple questions, etc.
