Education / JAMB Blames GSM Providers For Candidates' Inability To Check Their Results by domesifa(m): 6:14pm On May 13, 2019
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has said that GSM service providers should be blamed for candidates’ inability to get the results of their 2019 UTME after texting their details to a dedicated code.

The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the examination board was already aware of the problem and had consequently summoned a meeting with the GSM service providers.

“They have assured that they are working hard to get the issue addressed and that in no distant time, candidates should be able to access their results without hitch,” Benjamin said of the outcome of the meeting with the GSM service providers.

Candidates of the 2019 UTME had decried the technical challenges they have been facing as they try to access their results by telephone.

And the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, which conducted the examination, admitted the problem, but said it was working in collaboration with telephone service providers to resolve the glitches.

JAMB on Saturday directed the candidates to use the same telephone numbers used in registering for the examination to access their results by sending ‘RESULT’ Surname Middle Name and Last Name to code ‘55019’ on the same GSM number used for the registration.

Mrs Bridget Otuagha, a parent, expressed worries at the challenge her son was facing to get his result.

According to her, ever since the result was announced, her son had tried without success to check his result as directed by the Board.

“I am sick with worry about this whole thing. My son has been trying to get his result since Saturday, to no avail.

“He has been sending this ‘RESULT’ to the said code up until this morning, and there has been no response to that effect.

“This is getting, not just him, but the entire family, worried. JAMB should please see if there is another way to this situation,’’ Otuagha told NAN.

Mrs. Florence Ibem, another concerned parent, also told NAN that her son was also having the same issue checking his score for the same examination.

“Since they released the result, we have not been able to access his scores through the telephone number we used in acquiring the registration pin.

“After sending RESULT to the said code several times, we only waited to see that no response whatsoever will follow. This is disturbing and frustrating.

“Something should be done and, urgently, too. Even if it is withheld or cancelled, I think we deserve to know,’’ Ibem said.

When contacted, the Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, apologised to the affected persons on behalf of the Board.

According to him, the challenge is from the service providers.

Benjamin said that the board had received complaints concerning the development and summoned the service providers for a meeting on the issue.

“We have just had a meeting with the service providers and they have assured that they are working hard to get the issue addressed and that in no distant time, candidates should be able to access their results without hitch.

“We are just trying to ensure that all the candidates deserving of results should have firsthand information of their performance via their telephones.

“It is after that, that we will go ahead and post it to our website for candidates to go ahead and print.

“We are just trying to safeguard these results from the activities of fraudsters.

“We want candidates to know their scores first, so that on getting to print them out at the business centres, there would not be anything funny on their slips,’’ the JAMB spokesman explained.

NAN reports that of the over 1.8 million candidates that registered for the examination, a total of 1,792,719 of them had their results released by the board.

A total of 49, 265 results were withheld for examination malpractice. Out of the number, 15, 145 results are undergoing further clarification as in the case of identical twins and siblings.

Education / Utme Result: Nigerian Students Threaten Jamb Over N50 Sms Charge by domesifa(m): 2:28pm On May 13, 2019
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, to refund N50 Short Message Service, SMS, charges back to UTME candidates.

NANS made this demand while accusing JAMB of exploiting Nigerian students through the SMS charge of N50 to get their results.

In a statement by its national Senate President, Comrade Abdulmajeed Oladimeji Oyeniyi, NANS called on the board to send the examination results directly to candidates’ phone since it has their database.

NANS warned that the board would face the wrath of students nationwide if the money was not refunded in 48 hours.

According to Oyeniyi: “We are never an accident of history; we are part and parcel of the struggle so far. The Nigerian students no longer have confidence in the board’s leadership and decision making.

“In a sane community, Computer Based Test (CBT) should be well planned before execution to cater for the purposes it was invented for.

“The sanity in the system should ensure appropriate immediate release of results of examinations done by students but it was unfortunate that the board took almost a month to release results across the nation with unprofessional, unethical, non-ideological and non-technological excuses which is nothing but a disgrace to us as giant of Africa.”

Education / 2019 UTME: 15-year-old Boy Records Highest Score – JAMB by domesifa(m): 3:40pm On May 11, 2019
A 15-year-old, Ekele Franklin from Imo, was overall best in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME), conducted between April 11 to April 15.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB Registrar, disclosed this at a news conference to announce the release of the results in Abuja on Saturday.

He said that Franklin, who made University of Lagos his first choice, scored 347 and might eventually not get the admission because he is underage.

The board registrar also said one Emmanuel Chidebube, a 16-year-old boy from Abia came second with 346 score, while Isaac Olamide, a 17-year-old indigene of Osun came third with 345 score.

While giving the breakdown of the results, Oloyede said 2,906 candidates scored over 300 as against 4,683 in the 2018 results.

He added that 57,579 candidates scored between 250 and 299 as against 64,120 in the 2018 results.

According to him, 366,757 candidates also scored between 200 and 249, which is showed significant improvement from the 2018 results.

“361,718 candidates scored between 180 and 199 as against 325,152 in 2018, while 494,484 scored between 160 and 179 as against 455,898 last year.

“410,844 candidates scored between 140 and 159 as against 346,825 recorded in 2018 while also 99,463 scored between 100 and 139 as against 64,712 in 2018.”

The registrar said that about 1,792,719 candidates sat for the exams, while 34,120 candidates had their results withheld for examination malpractice.

Oloyede stated that 15,145 results were withheld for further clarification.

The registrar, therefore, advised candidates to use the phone number used for registration and text it to 55019 to get their results instantly.

Oloyede identified a lot of infractions from candidates and Computer Based Centres (CBT) owners ranging from multiple registration, manipulation of biometrics and deliberate destruction of power sources during the examination.

“No doubt, examination malpractice is a cankerworm that has eaten deeply not only into Nigeria but also the rest of the world, especially the developed countries such as the USA and U.K.

“In Nigeria too, examination malpractice is exacerbated by the insatiable greed and desperate antics of parents, who are hell-bent on inducting their innocent and not-so-innocent children into the world of sharp practices and corruption.

“Double registrations led to the cancellation of some results last year, but we realised that this year not only double registrations but also multiple registrations were recorded.

“Someone for instance registered as many as 23 times for just a single examination.

“On impersonation, in the 2019 UTME, we were able to identify a large number of impersonators, who have been writing UTME for candidates.

“Most of the tutorial masters specialise in recruiting such professional writers for the candidates.

“They do so by using the names directly or variants of the names or by multiple registrations.

“An example is Anambra state where two centres registered a large number of impersonating candidates. In such cases, the results of the candidates have been cancelled and the CBT centres delisted.

“We have also tracked the registration centres and the computers used. In cases where we were able to ascertain the culpability of the centres, we delisted them,” he said.

According to the registrar, the fraudsters thought they could beat the system through ‘contributed fingers’ where two or more persons would use their fingers to register for candidates.

“Two examples of this case are in the Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare, where someone’s finger(s) was discovered in 42 person’s registration and Bauchi State University, Gadau, where one person’s is traced to the registration of 64 candidates.

“Another example was in Borno State where in Nassara Computer Academy, Maiduguri, 233 candidates had one particular finger included in each of their biometric registration.

“We have made representative arrests and we must thank the Inspector-General of Police and the Commandant-General of the NSCDC for their wonderful cooperation.

The I-G actually set up a Special Task Force of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB), which assisted tremendously in tracking the offenders.

Oloyede, however, noted that 116 centres had been delisted for various infractions, saying that 18 of the 116 centres was previously sanctions by the governing board of JAMB.

He, therefore, assured universities of the board’s commitment in sending biometrics and photo details of candidates to the universities for post UTME

Education / 2019 UTME: JAMB To Announce Results Tomorrow by domesifa(m): 7:39pm On May 10, 2019
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it will release the results of the recent Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be released Saturday.

The registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Friday.

The registrar said the details of the results will be announced by 10 a.m. on Saturday.

”We are holding a meeting now so we can have all the details available by tomorrow. We are releasing our results tomorrow,” he said.

The 2019 UTME began on April 11 and ended on April 17 with about 1.8 million registered candidates.

Compared to other years in the recent past, the 2019 JAMB results have taken extra weeks to come in. The board said it needed more time to investigate cases of cheating.

Education / Release Our Results - Candidates, Parents Beg JAMB by domesifa(m): 8:38pm On May 05, 2019
Some 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations candidates have appealed to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to release their results.

The candidates spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Bwari.

The 2019 UTME commenced on April 11 to April 18 with 1. 8 million registered candidates.

The Board has repeatedly said that it would take its time to screen the results because of the several infractions discovered during the exercise.

Madueke John, a candidate, said that the long wait for the results has held some of the candidates back , while also causing a lot of tension.

“With everything we are hearing from JAMB and other media reports we are getting, we are tense.

“I know I did not do anything that will incriminate me during the exams, but the entire process this time around has really changed.

“If JAMB, while screening, discovers those who are innocent, why don’t they release those ones and continue screening others, seriously, this is taking forever.

“I really don't know what to expect again, but please, they should just focus on this year’s exercise and release at least parts of the results to reduce the tension".

Another candidate, Henrietta Adams, said the Board was, undoubtedly, doing what it deemed best for the country. She, however, added that it would also do a lot of good if some of the results are released.

Adam added that the long wait has caused some of the candidates to be unsure of what might happen at the end of the day.

She said: “Even if you are sure you did not commit any malpractice during the exercise , with the way the entire process is going, one is forced to start thinking whether one’ s result would be held for mere turning his or her head during the examination.

“I truly don't know what to say or expect again. I am just confused. If, at least, some results were released in parts like last year, then at least, one will be hopeful; but as it is, only God knows what they may come up with next.

“We will continue to wait; but please, JAMB, do something soonest”.

Mr Joseph Onimisi, a candidate's parent , commended the Board for exposing some of the corruption in the system, but advised that parts of the results be released too.

This, he said would reduce the criticism of the Board by those skeptical of its intention, adding that the entire process may take longer than the Board had expected.

The Board had continued to assure that it would release the results of the 2019 UTME as soon as it was done screening the entire results, to cut out those who were involved in one malpractice or the other during the exercise.

Education / 2019 UTME: Don't Expect Result Earlier Than Wednesday - JAMB Tells Candidates by domesifa(m): 11:04pm On Apr 29, 2019
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Monday said that it is yet to release results of the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination but would do so within the week.

JAMB's Head of Media and Publicity, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja insists that the results would be officially released “anytime” within the week.

This, he explained was because candidates would expect the results from the first two days of the week but might be disappointed as the board has yet to conclude the process of the exercise.

Benjamin said, “We will not release it today, Monday; and we will not release it tomorrow, Tuesday.

“What we said was anytime within this week. By implication, we are concluding the screening exercise this week and results can be released anytime within the week.”

Benjamin urged the public to fully comprehend media reports to avoid misconception as the board was committed to ensuring sanity in the system.

Benjamin, earlier (last week) said that the 2019 UTME results would be ready anytime from Monday, April 29, after a rigorous process.

He had noted that the board was still screening the results but hopefully, the results would be ready soonest.

The board had earlier stated that it would only release the 2019 UTME results after undergoing thorough screening to identify and apprehend examination cheats.

The U.S. Merriam-Webster dictionary has added 640 new words and new definitions to its index, reflecting changing uses of the English language.

“Snowflake’’ now also means someone who is too sensitive, while “peak’’ formally can be defined as something at the height of popularity or usage.

“Stan’’ refers to an obsessive fan.

Compound terms have also entered the dictionary, such as “garbage time,’’ meaning the final part of a sports game in which one side has an insurmountable lead.

“Screen time’’ refers to the amount of time one spends staring at a mobile phone or tablet.

The changing nature of the business world has also influenced the dictionary, which now includes terms like the “gig economy,’’ referring to temporary work, and “vulture capitalism,’’ which refers to aggressive buying of distressed companies.

“The English language never sleeps, and neither does the dictionary.

“Each word follows its own path at its own pace before its use is widespread enough to be included in a dictionary,’’ Merriam-Webster said in a statement.

There are also a bunch of new words from science, including terms that reflect societal shifts. “Top surgery’’ and “bottom surgery’’ are both terms from gender confirmation operations, as transgender visibility expands.

Education / "Only 10 Candidates Can Use Computer In A Hall Of 250" -JAMB Invigilator Reveals by domesifa(m): 11:58pm On Apr 18, 2019
An invigilator at the just concluded Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, has taken to the social media to share what is a shocking revelation about the computer literacy level of the prospective higher institution students.

Since the introduction of the Computer Based Test (CBT) in 2013, there have been the challenges of students mastering the act of using the computer, which has led to various shortcomings after the examinations.

Eniolaoluwa, who was an invigilator shared on her Twitter handle her experience during the weeklong examinations. “Okay so I just finished invigilating JAMB exams and all I can say is we have a very big problem that we are not aware of.

“In a hall of about 250 JAMB candidates, only 10 can successfully use a computer system. The rest cannot just understand how the computer works, they are terrified at the sight of a mouse.

“They cannot left click, they cannot pick their answers using the mouse or the keyboard, they cannot scroll, they cannot delete when they make a mistake, they cannot locate letters on the keyboard.

“And JAMB has tried cos the candidates have the opportunity of doing mock exams, the purpose of mock is to expose them to computers and let them know what to expect in the day of their exams.

“Before they start the exam, JAMB has provided a short video for them, the video shows them how their questions will look like, how to answer questions, how to use the mouse, etc but some of them will call you and insist their pictures and reg numbers are not on the videos. How?

“The front page of their rough sheets also has instructions on how to use the computer. You can successfully write JAMB exam without using the keyboard, there are letters you can use and it is explicitly stated on the front page of their rough sheets but no.

“They still don’t understand how to go about it. One of the candidates called me and told me he wanted to submit, I looked at the screen and realised he hasn’t answered any question, apparently he has been double clicking.

“On the letters of the options, n then it highlights and he thinks he has picked the answers. He hasn’t answered any questions and at that time they had just 10mins to go, now tell me, how does he want to pass the exam?

“Meanwhile on the rough sheet and in the video it is clearly stated, press A if the answer is option A, press B if the answer is option B, etc, press S to submit, press N for previous and so but these candidates cannot just do it.

“Some submit without answering any questions, a candidate left after answering about 40 questions out of 180. If the computer hibernates all they just need to do is shake the mouse some would raise it up in the air…please how? Some would start saying prayers in Yoruba!

“Some cannot type in their reg number, they don’t know how to. At the front page of their rough sheets, JAMB explained the use of nine keys, a candidate called me to tell me he has ticked the nine keys on the rough sheet. I was like what the?

“Most cannot construct a simple sentence in English, you will start hearing ‘ I aff submit’, ‘I aff write it’, ‘ezzz not press’. Some will turn it to pidgin ‘ I no fit do am’. My Yoruba people will say ‘edakun ko te’, ‘mi o ri se’. Guys, it is bad. “That means students that go to private schools are in the minority cos at the end of the day over 1000 candidates did their jamb in my center and about 50 can use the computer well. The rest Nahhhh.

“I asked one of them and he told me they have the only abacus in their school, ABACUS!!!! Do some secondary schools use abacus He said he has never seen a computer in his life. Of cos, we had this conversation in Yoruba cos we were struggling with English.

“They cannot comprehend, cos, if you ask them to explain the instructions at the front page of their rough sheet they cannot that, means they don’t understand what is written there, how then do they want to follow instructions if they can’t comprehend.

“Most of them struggle to communicate with you in English, they can’t make the words. They just can’t. And these candidates will enter universities and come out as graduates? “Honestly we are not expecting too much from public schools in Nigeria, don’t buy ACs, you don’t have to produce the best WAEC results but at the very very very least, provide Computers for God sake, Computers. How will they survive without knowing how to use computers? “How will they survive if they don’t know how to effectively communicate? How will they survive if they cannot comprehend simple English? It’s sad.

“This experience is not just in my centre, it is a problem in Ilorin centres. I do not know about other states. But in Ilorin, it’s a mess. It’s a huge mess.

“Some will fail, not because they don’t know (even though they don’t know, cos some easy questions were missed but It might be easy for me and difficult for them but that’s not the point) but because they do not know how to use a computer. The thing is like magic to them.

“I know we do GoFundMe for the health problems of people, but should we start gofundme for the educational system? We honestly cannot crowdfund our way out of our problems/incompetence/corruption in this country. “At some point, something has to be done to these public schools especially. I know most people are not aware of these problems cos we all went to ‘Behind’ schools where we had cyber cafes in schools but this is a problem and it must be addressed.”

"Paris is disfigured"

Religion / See Moment Notre-dame Was On Fire (photos) by domesifa(m): 8:12pm On Apr 15, 2019
Crowds of stunned Parisians and tourists -- some crying, others offering prayers -- watched on in horror in central Paris on Monday evening as flames engulfed the Notre-Dame cathedral.

Gasps and cries of "Oh my god" erupted at 7:50 pm (1750 GMT) when the top portion of the church's spire came crashing down into an inferno that has spread to the entire roof.

More gasps came a few seconds later when the rest of the spire collapsed, caught on the cameras of thousands of mobile phones.

"Paris is disfigured. The city will never be like it was before," said Philippe, a communications worker in his mid-30s, who had biked over after being alerted of the fire by a friend.

"It's a tragedy," he added. "If you pray, now is the time to pray."

Police were attempting to clear pedestrians away from the two islands in the river Seine, including the Ile de la Cite which houses the soaring Gothic church, one of Europe's best known landmarks.

But throngs of onlookers kept trying to approach, snarling traffic as they massed on the stone bridges leading to the islands.

Another woman passed by, tears running from behind her glasses, too overwhelmed to speak to reporters.

"It's finished, we'll never be able to see it again," said Jerome Fautrey, a 37-year-old who had come to watch.

"Now we need to know how this happened -- with everything that's going on in the world, why Notre-Dame? Maybe it's a message from on high," he said.

One police officer, arriving on one of the bridges, turned up to gape, saying "Oh my god."

"It's incredible, our history is going up in smoke," said Benoit, 42, who arrived on the scene by bike.

Education / 2019 JAMB-UTME: System Failure, Lateness And Other Hitches Mar Day I by domesifa(m): 9:41am On Apr 12, 2019
Reports across the centres nationwide indicated computer failure, late commencement of examinations, especially in Lagos, Kano and Kaduna states.

In Lagos, anxious parents at Dalewares Centre, Ilupeju, who spoke to Vanguard, lamented that examinations were yet to commence as at 7.30 p.m., saying: “Candidates who arrived the centre since 7 a.m., were famished and exhausted all day without any explanation for the delay.”

At a centre located at School of Technology, Kano Polytechnic, candidates were still waiting anxiously to write the examination by 7.20 p.m Similarly, at God is Able Centre, Olodo, Ibadan, Oyo State, candidates were yet to start the examination by 8 p.m, earlier scheduled for 11 a.m.

A parent who lamented the delay, said: “You (Jamb) had a whole year to prepare for this exam and by 8p.m., candidates are still waiting to write exams. This is total rubbish; you put most parents and guardians in total confusion.”

The frustration of parents and guardians were also expressed in the following tweets by Oloruntola babatunde @haztola “My sister couldn’t write her jamb this morning (yesterday) because her fingerprints and four others couldn’t be verified by the computer and there was no provision made by @jamb for the failure of their machine. So unfair.” Malikah @husnahkassim, said: “This computer based jamb? My sister’s computer went off today (yesterday) while she was taking the exams and the time was still reading before they finished restoring it. It wasn’t her fault but she will be the one to pay for it.”

This came as journalists were barred from entering examination halls to take pictures and videos of the process in Abuja and Nasarawa State among other states.

Specifically, security operatives attached to Childworth International School, one of the centres in Masaka, Nasarawa State, working on the directive of JAMB officials at the centre, confiscated Vanguard reporter’s phone following pictures and videos he took at the Computer Based Test, CBT, centre.

After establishing that some pictures and videos of some candidates and the examination process were saved on the phone, the security men, drawn from Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Army and plain clothes detectives believed to be from Department of State Service, DSS, insisted that the saved items be deleted.

After deleting the items, the officials instructed the security men not to allow journalists inside the premises anymore. Also, at Global Distance Learning Institution, one of the CBT centres at the Central Business District in Abuja, journalists who went to monitor the process were told not to take pictures and videos in the examination halls.

Crime / President Buhari Reacts To The Killing Of Kolade Johnson By SARS by domesifa(m): 7:15pm On Apr 03, 2019
Let me make it clear that the Government will not tolerate in any way the brutalization of Nigerians or the violation of their rights. Any law enforcement officer or government functionary caught in this act will be visited with the full weight of the law.

The recent unfortunate action of SARS operatives from the Lagos State Police Command, which led to the avoidable death of Mr. Kolade Johnson, is deeply regretted. Once again, our condolences to the family of the deceased. I’m aware the Police authorities have visited them.

I acknowledge the genuine outrage from citizens and Civil Society groups regarding the activities of SARS. As you’re aware, the Suspects in the Kolade Johnson killing are in custody. When the orderly room trial is concluded, indicted officers will be prosecuted in court.

While important steps have been taken by the Police leadership to restructure and reform SARS, in line with presidential directives, more needs to be done. I assure this will be done. We will continue to work to ensure that we have a Police Force that adheres to the rule of law.

Education / 2019 UTME: JAMB Reschedules Printing Of Exam Slips To April 4 by domesifa(m): 12:05pm On Apr 02, 2019
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rescheduled printing of the 2019/20 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) slips to Thursday, April 4.

JAMB’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dr Fabian Benjamin disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

NAN reports that the printing of the examination slips was initially scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 2.

Benjamin said the shift in date came after 14 Computer Based Tests (CBT) centres were on Monday, suspended due to infractions during the board’s conduct of Mock UTME, including an incident where JAMB staff were attacked at one of its centres.

“The suspension has caused some distortion in the initial arrangement and the board will have to relocate candidates who were scheduled to write in the affected centres to other suitable centres.

“We all know that one of the essence of the mock exercise was to check the level of preparedness of not only candidates but also centres that keep to the rules and regulations of the board.

“It is to check on centres that are desperate to cheat and to make sure that they do not achieve their aim.

“Immediately after the exercise yesterday, we went into a meeting and examined the conduct of the exercise, identified the structural problems and made adjustments immediately.

“We want to ensure no centre fails during the conduct of the exercise.

“So we need today and tomorrow to redistribute the candidates affected by these suspended centres who had planned to extort them, defraud and frustrate the system, to centres that are more suitable, then printing can begin Thursday. ”

He added that the board was putting all hands on deck to ensure that candidates sat for the examination in centres where they were safe, suitable and conducive for the exercise that would be globally accepted.

He apologised to all candidates of the examination for the inconvenience caused, adding that the board’s intention remained to give its best, and ensure a hitch-free and successful exercise.

NAN recalls that Prof. Ishaq Oloyede on Monday said that the board had de-listed 14 CBT centres out of the 712 accredited due to infractions like technical hitch and deceit.

He also said that two staff of the board were attacked at Lagos state Polytechnic centre and were almost murdered but were rescued.

Oloyede said the 698 centres left in the operations were ready for the conduct of the UTME scheduled to hold between April 11 and April 15
