I've just observed that Croatian player names at this World Cup have a very distinctive, almost rhythmic quality. There is a heavy concentration of surnames ending in "-ić" (pronounced roughly like "-itch"). Looking at names such as Modrić, Perišić, Livaković, Sučić, Stanišić, and Pašalić, it almost feels like an "-ić" parade. A bit of research reveals that the suffix "-ić" is a South Slavic patronymic and diminutive ending, essentially meaning "son of" or "little one of." It is the Croatian and Serbian equivalent of the English "-son" in surnames such as Johnson or Anderson. It is deeply embedded in South Slavic identity and family heritage. It immediately evokes memories of the famous Bulgarian side at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. That squad featured distinctive names such as Hristo Stoichkov, Krasimir Balakov, Yordan Letchkov, Emil Kostadinov, Trifon Ivanov, Borislav Mihailov, and Zlatko Yankov. The Bulgarian team had a similarly unmistakable naming pattern. Stoichkov, Balakov, Letchkov, Kostadinov, Penev... many of their surnames ended in "-ov" or "-kov," Slavic patronymic suffixes meaning "of" or "belonging to." Different branches of the Slavic family, but the same naming tradition. That Bulgarian "Golden Generation" remains unforgettable to me because it was the first European team Nigeria defeated at a World Cup. The Super Eagles secured a famous 3–0 victory in Dallas through goals from Rashidi Yekini, Daniel Amokachi, and Emmanuel Amuneke in Nigeria's debut World Cup match. I still remember staying awake between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. to watch those matches. For many Nigerians who witnessed USA '94, seeing a lineup filled with names like Modrić, Perišić, and Livaković can bring back memories of hearing commentators call out Stoichkov, Letchkov, Balakov, and Kostadinov during that unforgettable summer of football. USA '94 remains one of the most iconic World Cups in football history for me, as it marked the Super Eagles' remarkable arrival on the global stage. It remains my benchmark against which every World Cup is measured.

We have at one time or another suddenly run out of domestic gas. This could be very frustrating, disappointing and even embarrassing. Imagine running out of gas at ungodly hour or even while making haste to leave home. Moreso, some stations could outsmart their customers with false quantity of the refilled substance. It's time we had transparent gas cylinders

The Church pews which were once filled with worshippers who gathered to celebrate God Almighty for their wins in life while brokering spiritual insurance for future wins, are now left unoccupied. Believers in Nigeria are forced by economic circumstances to silently wonder if God really loves them. Because let's face it, worship when times are tough is the hardest thing to do. Many Christians, like the biblical widow of Zarephath are pinching on their dwindling resources and subtracting the expense of going to church from their depleting store. The silent thought which they are afraid to voice out is: "Shebi God don see as things be Na. It's not anyone's fault." Like the Bible predicted in Mathew 24, the love of many is beginning to wax cold...🥹🥹🥹 Many had long turned away. In fact, if you approach anyone today to request for financial help to attend church, the most likely retort you're going to get is an INTERCONTINENTAL BOMBASTIC SIDE EYE...🙄🙄🙄😏😏😏😏 The scary news is that it is going to get worse. In fact, many Churches will close down. It's a sad time to exist as a Nigerian Churchgoer.

PRESS RELEASE IGP WARNS AGAINST UNORGANIZED DISTRIBUTION OF PALLIATIVES, FUNFAIRS. As 2 Other Incidences Hit FCT, Anambra. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., has raised serious concerns about the unorganized distribution of palliatives and relief items in the country during this festive period. This trend is worrisome and calls for urgent concerns to save the lives of citizens of this country, especially the vulnerable youths and the elderly. This warning follows a series of tragic incidents that highlight the urgent need for a more structured and effective approach to delivering aid to vulnerable communities and members of the public in general. It would be recalled that on the 18th of December 2024, a tragic incident had occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s fun fair resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children and left many others critically injured. In the early hours of today, the 21st of December 2024, another tragedy struck at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, in a similar stampede that occurred during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly individuals. This unfortunate incident led to the death of 10 individuals, leaving many others injured. A similar incident also occurred at Okija, Ihiala Local Government, Anambra State at a palliative distribution set up by a philanthropist identified as Obi Jackson, which led to the death of several individuals. At the moment, 3 persons have been confirmed dead while many injured have been taken to various hospitals for adequate treatment. The IGP emphasized the dangers posed to public safety during these unorganized distributions and funfairs set up by groups, individuals and NGOs, including the potential for stampedes and other incidents that could endanger lives. The lack of a well-defined plan for distributing palliatives has resulted in chaos, leading to long lines and unnecessary confrontations among citizens seeking assistance. In light of these developments, the IGP has called on government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations to work collaboratively towards establishing a comprehensive and organized framework for distributing palliatives. The IGP has hereby warned groups and organizers of similar events to ensure the involvement of security agencies as negligence on their part is criminal and would not be overlooked, as provided for in Sec. 196 of the Penal Code and Sec. 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In addition, the IGP has encouraged the general public who would want to benefit from such distributions to tread with caution, prioritizing their safety, to avoid unforeseen calamities. The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at creating a safer and more structured environment for aid distribution in our communities. Collaborating with relevant stakeholders, the Force aims to prevent future tragedies and ensure such processes are seamless. The IGP has ordered the Commissioners of the affected states to carry out thorough investigations into these ugly incidences for further legal actions. The Inspector-General of Police therefore sympathizes with the bereaved families and wishes those injured quick recovery. Press Statement NCC Orders Immediate Reactivation of Lines Affected by NIN-SIM Verification Issues Over the weekend many telecom subscribers/consumers were unable to access their phone lines because of the inability of many telecom consumers to verify their National Identification Numbers (NINs) with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs). This meant that their numbers were blocked by their telecom service providers in keeping with laws and policies of the NIN-SIM linkage. Telecoms consumers and the public will recall the compulsory linkage of NIN with SIM which began in December 2020 when the government directed telecommunication companies to bar unregistered SIM cards and SIMs that were not linked to NIN. Since December 2023, the Commission has since reviewed the deadline a few times; April 15, 2024 was set as the deadline for the full network barring of subscribers with four or fewer SIMs that had unverified NIN details. This deadline was then reviewed to July 31, 2024, to give consumers more time to ensure their submitted NIN details are properly verified. Despite these extensions, many phone lines are yet to be linked with verified NINs. The objectives of this exercise by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) include enhancing national security and ensuring the national SIM ownership database is accurate. The NIN-SIM linkage policy aids in verifying and protecting users' identities while also providing a critical infrastructure that assures access to the benefits of a robust digital economy for the citizenry. The consumer is our priority, therefore, considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the Commission has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend in view of the short time available for consumers to undertake the verification of their NINs with their SIMs. Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM. Members of the public who are yet to verify their SIMs are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to maintain access to their lines. GOV ENO VISITS FAMILY OF LATE NOLLYWOOD MAKE-UP ARTIST …offers automatic employment to elder sister …directs renovation of family house …promises assistance to the undergraduate sisters Living to his billing as the epitome of compassion, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on arrival from an official engagement in Abuja, this afternoon drove straight to the family compound of the late Nollywood make- up artist. Abigail Edith Frederick, in Ikot Udoma, Eket Local Government Area, where he consoled the bereaved family. Showing deep emotions, Governor Eno, sat with the grieving family members and told them he feels their pain. “This is deeply unfortunate, a young girl, 24 years old, who, finished her Youth Service just last year, and decided to pursue her passion. “This is a reflection of our Arise spirit. It shows that our young people are willing to go out there, not begging, not waiting for handouts, but to pursue their passions. “It is sad and unfortunate that her life ended the way it did. “Once I was fully briefed, I decided to come here personally with the full complement of Government to console and encourage the family. “You are not just the Governor when people are celebrating. In times and moments like this, you become the Mourner- in-Chief and give them hope. “I trust the Holy Spirit will perfect the hope in their lives. “Coming here means we care. You know Akwa Ibomites are like Americans. We don’t leave each other behind. Government will be with the family and support them.” The Governor thereafter gave an automatic employment in the State Civil Service to the surviving elder sister of the deceased, and directed the SSA on Humanitarian Services, Umo Ekpo to renovate the family house and bring it to modern standards. The Governor also assured of Government’s assistance to the two sisters of the bereaved who are undergraduates at the University of Uyo, said to be sponsored by the late Nollywood make- up artist. England's wait to win a first Women's World Cup title goes on after Spain deservedly triumphed in the final in Sydney. The Lionesses, looking to become the first England senior side since the men's team in 1966 to win the World Cup, suffered heartbreak after being outplayed by a Spanish side full of flair and creativity. England's players fell to their knees in tears at the final whistle as Spain celebrated inside their penalty area after dealing with a final corner kick in the 14th minute of nerve-wracking stoppage time. Spain captain Olga Carmona slotted the winner past goalkeeper Mary Earps in the first half, after England's Lucy Bronze lost possession in midfield. England manager Sarina Wiegman, who has now lost two successive World Cup finals, introduced Lauren James and Chloe Kelly at half-time but Spain maintained control despite the Lionesses' best efforts. Earps made several stunning saves, including one from the penalty spot to deny Jenni Hermoso after Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh had been penalised for handball following a lengthy video assistant referee review. But it was one step too far for the European champions, who lost just their second match in two years under Wiegman. Spain are crowned champions for the first time despite going into the tournament under a cloud of controversy following a dispute between players and the Spanish football federation. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66561827
